    I have my deck for over 18 months and I am still a happy customer. Currently I am running steamOS 3.5 from the preview channel with a build in option to change the color saturation, similar to vibrantDeck. Although the screen quality was never an issue for me, the now richer colors are nice. Also the performance of demanding games is now slightly improved. This is exactly the continued software support the I am looking for. I had a hardware defect recently and Valve send me immediately a new Deck after I returned mine. So far a pleasant customer experience for me!
    Totally off topic: I was visiting friends last week in Swizerland and we had Fondue and it was amazing!

    The deck allowed me to play a backlog that was just sitting there, you get older and your time for gaming gets really limited with what life throws at you, the steam deck just allowed me a new kind of access to my extensive steam library and rekindled my love of gaming. I was able to 100% Sable while I traveled or while keeping an eye on my toddler.

    Coming up on a year owning my deck, and with being a much older gamer 40+ 😬 the ability to just pick up and play is a win. I’ve seen a couple others mention with having kids, the deck is a dream come true. I honestly don’t know much of anything about computers/the lingo so I’m sure I’m not using it to it’s totally potential, but being able to play RDR2 makes it worth the price. I hope to learn how to download/use mods and enjoy this gem even more.

    The main things that keep me glued to the Steam Deck over other handhelds is the controls. I was a big fan of the Steam Controller back in the day, and this just feels like the natural evolution of that concept. That, and it's one of the only handhelds on the market not prepackaged with Windows 😮‍💨

    • @d2riff
      @d2riff 10 місяців тому +5

      This is a big one for me and It's unbelievable how many options you're given with controls. I can't play Elden Ring on a regular controller anymore. I also managed to create a full scheme for Diablo 2, which has a dumbed down control scheme for it's console counterparts, but the Steam Deck makes it possible for me to play like I would on a keyboard.
      Whoever was in charge of controls *REALLY* gets it. I've spent the better part of a decade remapping buttons in favor of always having access a game's camera movement, and the Steam Deck just lets me do that for free. That was the thing that really felt next gen about Steam Deck to me.

    It brought me back to gaming. Simple as that.
    I built a cutting edge gaming pc with 3080 the moment it was available here. However, job + marriage + degree caused me to have only short sessions for free time. I was looking at the deck for almost a year before buying it, fearing it will just collect dust.
    And let me tell you that, not only that ot got me back to gaming, being daily, it also made me play much more on my gaming pc. The fact that now when I finaly have a time for a longer session I can play on the pc without the overhead of retuening to a game after a month.
    They realy function as an ecosystem.

      @The_Cadaver 10 місяців тому +2

      See, this type of comment right here is what initially sold me on the deck as a new father. However, the reality of it turned out to be pretty awful. Wifi connectivity sucks, Steam OS sucks, cloud sync works like 20 percent of the time, the ergonomics are poor, the buttons grind and get stuck, the analog sticks are slippery, the battery is almost nonexistent, and lots of games have abysmal performance overall. I ended up booting my Xbox 360 instead on so many occasions. Total waste of money for me.

    • @The_Cadaver
      @The_Cadaver 10 місяців тому +3

      @@markymoo22 (LCD model obv.) WiFi connectivity sucks, making it worthless as a PC streaming device. Cloud sync function only works about 20% of the time (due to potato WiFi chip). Syncing saves across devices becomes a manual chore if you add this thing to your ecosystem. And the shader cache updates go straight to internal storage, regardless of your SD card size or speed -- making the 64 GB model completely useless for SD cards over 512 GB.
      Poor performance when running semi-modern titles natively. You'll have to lower your settings until it's a mess of blurry pixels, or stick to indie 2D games if you want 60 fps gameplay. Older stuff runs fine, but is mostly un-optimized, and makes the device run hotter than necessary -- if it's even supported at all.
      The face buttons grind and get stuck. The analog sticks are slippery, with a rubberized outer ring. And the d-pad is poorly placed. High skill floor genres and games are borderline unplayable. And peripheral support is pretty bad too.
      It's the worst controller I own, and the most frustrating PC/console I've ever had to deal with.
      All that said, I am pretty anal about controllers and performance, and haven't really messed with consoles since the late 2000's. So your mileage may vary. Really depends on what you're playing and what you can tolerate.

    • @capablanc
      @capablanc 10 місяців тому +2

      @The_Cadaver Same problems. Steam deck is overblown. The sticks are clunky and the triggers feel awful to use with such a heavy device. On a controller your thumb pads rest over the sticks and yet most people use the tips of their thumbs on deck sticks because it's so poorly designed.
      Great for old games, bad for anything new and yet the fanboyism surrounding this device would make anyone think it was a handheld 4090.
      Ended up selling mine a couple months later and felt like I was lied to by everyone online.

Now some are able to run wii u, ps2 resource demanding games at roughly the same cost of devices back then that could only run small amounts of n64 games.

    And I think people can still have a similar experience with the deck now.
    You can play Starfield on it. Something that Bethesda deemed to be not possible on the ps4. And still it running on deck ...
    The device is cheap, the games are cheap, you can easily upgrade/repair it and valve is standing behind it. They do their best to give us the best experience on that power level. This is outstanding. Admirable...

It has changed how I play games and where I can play them... The size of the included case is definitely an issue for travel. But I see it more as a high quality packing measure, ensure impeccable delivery conditions (even when you send the device in for repairs). But if you value that doesn't need to survive the harsh condition of the delivery industry, just buy something like the "tomtoc" slim case. That will make the device fit into most bags A LOT better..

      Hmm, never thought of doing that 🤔
      It's probably doable, I don't see a reason why it can't be done other than possibly being a bit slow depending on how large the files are you're working with. But I'd say that the low resolution (compared to a phone or tablet) might make it difficult to make out details.
      Not sure regarding the color accuracy of the screen either, I'd say depending on what kind of a phone you have, that might be a better option than this.
      This is all speculation though as I never tried it 🙂

      @-Quote- 9 місяців тому

      True, the game sales are amazing, but let me just say, the extra hundreds of dollars for the oled is TOTALLY worth it, they lead it on to be just an oled screen and a better battery but oh boy is it better than that, its not just an oled screen its a 90 hz oled screen and the hdr on it is chefs kiss. the battery actually is like 40% better than the original and it runs so smoothly and more quieter than the original, the price drop on the original may seen appealing but trust me if you can hold off a few months or afford it right now hands down the oled would be worth spending more on.

    I’ve had my steam deck for a little over a year now, and I do enjoy it. Having my entire Steam library wherever I go is great! I love being able to do a few gigs Cyberpunk or explore the lands Between in Elden Ring. It’s not flawless though. For one, it’s a powerhouse at the cost of easy portability. Secondly, the battery is pretty poor. And third, it doesn’t have the same pick up and play factor that the switch has. It’s a great concept with a good execution, that will get better as time goes on. But, still, props to Valve for making such a niche idea into something mainstream.

    I've always found the problems people have with the Deck's size and portability to be a strange one, at least as someone who owns a Switch. After all, in terms of length the Deck is almost the exact same size as the Switch with a Hori Split Pad Pro, so it's really not so different. And regarding portability, neither are pocketable, so I'm going to need a bag regardless of which device I decide to bring with me.
    Idk, it always seemed like an overblown issue to me.

    For games where you can switch the GPU on the fly you can even just toggle it to the internal GPU and go.

You will be messing with thumbstick deadzones and fine tuning the gyro for weeks and weeks before it feels proper, & this is required for EACH individual game if you want a good experience
    & With every firmware/software update, expect a lot more tinkering just to get your games up & running once again. Do not be surprised if one day your favourite games installed on deck suddenly refuse to launch

    My experience so far with my Steam deck has given me zero problems .. only problem I had with it is when I'm out on my patio it's hard to whats on the screen , but I'm sure the new OLED model with fix that , I have Bnet on mine and play D2R a lot and have no issues along with some games like No Mans Sky , WWZ and BG3 that I thought might stress it out but the Deck plays them all with no problems I have a large battery bank outside but I haven't had to use it the battery life seems fine around the house when I'm outside with it . I've taken it on trips with me but it's usually only out for maybe an hour or two while I'm on a trip so battery life hasn't been an issue . Like most people first thing I bought was the 1tb high speed drive so I have not had any issues with disk space . I have a rubber case and screen protector on mine since it came out of the box I've dropped it hard on a few occasions but luckily it just bounced around off the ground and took no damage , it's a pretty solid piece of hardware I think . but a good thick rubber case is a must IMO . I agree the OEM joysticks are fine I have no desire to change them out , and the OEM internal drive seems also the external drives are more than enough . I have the docking station and its OK it adds a lot of port options but a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard work fine IMO , Its been over a year I had mine and I haven't used any of the steam app features I just play on PC when I'm inside the house , only on a rare occasion have a bothered to use it when I'm home inside . overall I'm very happy with it and wish I had more free time to tinker with the software and settings ..

It also doesn't look like a claymore but that might be more stable for impact. I just came back from holiday and threw the steam deck in my carry on, not worrying about anything. I got big hands so I even prefer a case. The Modcase looks comfy as well. jsauxs lot is a bit bigger than the modcase, but SD removal is probably still an issue. Can't test it now as I'm installing games onto my SD card. They also got cheap docks. Bought a dock before the valve one came out. It's epic. They also have a dock with an m.2 which I might buy later. Need another dock for the screen in the living room.

    Gonna make comments as i go, just cause i feel like my deck experience is a bit different then yours and for me it is down to the mentality i have about the deck.
    Size: the deck for me did not replace a mobile game console like the switch, it replaced my 13" laptop. Sure its thicker than the laptop but is smaller in both the x and y dimensions. This allowed me to switch from a full size backpack to a small ovet the shoulder bag and still carry everything i would want. Now im a limux user so using the deck for normal computing felt good to me, but if you don't like or use linux your mileage may vary.
    Deck vs pc, its interesting i also have a ver powerful gaming pc on a desk at home, however i work from home so i spend most of my day at that desk already, the last thing i want to do is continue to sit at it for several more hours after work. I haven't gamed on my desktop in over a month, instead using yhe deck in the living room where. Its honestly amazing. I could set up streaming fromy pc yo my deck, and probably should, but honestly even playing demanding games like cyberpunk and baldur's gate I haven't had any issues with performance
