CMF Phone 1 Review: A Budget Smartphone with Smart Compromises
At the low end of the smartphone market, most folks can typically expect a ton of compromises and a handful of degraded experience. #CMF (#Nothing's budget brand) bucks this trend by offering a surprisingly capable smartphone for $200. The only issue is...there are still some compromises which may be deal-breakers for some.

Testing Info
Practical testing results are provided after one week as a primary phone and one week as a secondary phone. The full time, we used the phone through Google FI. No reception or data speed issues were noted during testing.
We tested gameplay both with and without Gaming Mode enabled. (No significant difference was noted.) 720p resolution proved ideal for more graphically intense emulation (e.g., Wii, PS2), but easier to run games ran at 1080p without issue. All estimates are provided with default settings on the latest version of each app with Vulkan graphics enabled (where available).

The #Anbernic RG35XXSP is decidedly a machine meant to mimic the classic #Gameboy Advance SP, down to its hinge and shoulder buttons. Thanks for the video, I'm seriously considering this. When I sold my N64 20-some years ago, I kept my spare blue controller. I have a USB adaptor, but it doesn't work great, and I prefer wireless controllers in general. I don't have.real N64, I just do everything through emulation. I'll have to really think about this one.

    Man, I know speedrunners cream their man-panties* over original N64 analog sticks, but I always thought they felt like trash even when they were brand new. I don't get the appeal. I'm also not trying to do insanely precise maneuvers, though, so maybe there's something about the qualities I dislike that makes it _invaluable_ to people at the very top levels of skill. I'm sitting here playing with an old N64 controller that was _very_ lightly used and well-taken care of, and it feels just as cheap and shitty to me as it did when it was brand new. Stiff and scratchy. And another one I have that was pretty heavily-used feels, pretty much the same. The stick is loose and wobbles, but once I push it enough to engage with the mechanism, it feels just like the one that's in pretty good shape. AKA it feels like the same, scratchy, cheap, plasticy mess to my big boy fingers right now as it did to my little man fingers back in the days when Bill Clinton could still ruin (some may say "enhance") dresses in the Oval Office and have it penned in his schedule as a "patriotic team-building exercise." I think _any_ modern analog stick feels _worlds_ better than the best example of an N64 stick, and if it's a Hall effect stick, then there is a decent chance that the analog stick will outlast the case it's mounted in. Even though I find Playstation controller layout to be uncomfortable and cramp-inducing, I would have _gladly_ taken an N64 controller with a Dual Shock analog stick modded in over either any day of the week. And don't point a the octagonal rim and use that to tell me how wrong I am. I will readily admit that this specific design choice on the N64 controller is kingly shit and that it's kind of baffling that it basically disappeared from the industry outside a very niche segment of the hardware modding scene. I just like that pretty much all modern analog sticks that aren't instant e-waste-tier feel silky smooth to twiddle around. I never hated the tactile bumps from the stick bezel when rolling the N64's stick around, and I actually wish these were more common. I don't really understand why every gaming company decided to listen to the one person on the controller design team who thought that being able to _feel_ which direction you were pointing your input commands toward was "totally gay" (this was the early 2000's, it was a different time). It is a total coincidence that this same person also had no functioning nerve endings in their thumbs and thought that driving a car and shooting a gun were both greatly enhanced with a blindfold. * - Don't ask me why, I'm just relaying what the data says, I'm not actually a licensed pantyologist, but I assure you that the modern scientific consensus is that women speedrunners _also_ wear man-panties.(†) (†) - Exclusively

      It honestly doesn't. Since the phone still interprets a three-finger swipe as a standard swipe, swiping left or right leads to a lot of unwanted input while moving apps. On top of the gesture itself being fairly unintuitive, I'd rarely use want to use the gesture for most apps.

    Comparing OG hardware WITHOUT jailbreak to emulation is not fair. A moded 3DS is 10 times better than emulation. You have all the benefits of emulation with the original controls and the sleep mode, street pass etc... The only benefit of emulation is resolution, screen sizes and screen quality. Only caveat is the wii U, but honnestly, who cares ? All the best wii U games have been ported to switch anyway.

    I yoinked one of these while i was working at target - they had a lego bundle that came with a red controller i think? 40 bucks cause it was being cleared out. it's deffo a neat device and has a lot of potential for neat things, the main problem tho was that it was a vita at the end of the day with not much else going for it, and the disgustingly nerfed library in the us made it barely worth anything

  • @Xedhadeaus
    @Xedhadeaus 4 дні тому

    Because of my awful luck with electronics I ended up running toward the lg v60 instead. The aspect ratio is somewhat of a bummer especially when basically having to cross your fingers for an app to either support Ultrawide or for it to be old enough to allow the system to force it to ultrawide as a compatibility feature. I respect the device for what it is and can do though.

    When playing an N64 game or GameCube game that fully utilizes Those consoles analog sticks on a different controller you can feel that the analog stick isn't fully analog it's eight position analog and the games like Ocarina of Time for example itjust don't feel right when you play it on a real 64, there's nothing wrong with it. But if you play it on the switch for example and you use a Pro controller The game doesn't have full analog movement so it controls funny and for games with tricky platforming you HAVE to use Those specific controllers for those consoles

    I have mixed feelings about this device. I like the ingenuity of the aesthetics and everything but problem is if you buy the back plates and the accessories the value pretty much goes out the window. Once you add the three back plates and the three accessories all of a sudden the phones double the cost or more. That point you could get a OnePlus 12R or a pixel 8A or something. The other issue is having a removable back and not making it so you can remove the battery is just ridiculous. I do not be grudge them however for avoiding the US market officially. US market sucks for a new phone companies and even any phone company that's not Apple basically or maybe Samsung. Countries cultural obsession with Apple makes it so 90% of people under 20 are using an iPhone and Samsung and iPhone collectively account for 93% of carrier sal. At that that a new company coming in has to pay for certifications and access to the carrier infrastructure and it's just not worth it. So they're doing the half-assed approach by letting people buy from America as part of a beta program and not promising them much of anything in terms of reliability. It's at least a little more direct than going through something like giztop.

    • @NeroVingian40

      About the price point, it’s fine, you aren’t required to buy everything else that the phone comes out with, it’s not a required purchase. In a vacuum, it’s a good phone for $200. Everything else you said is spot on. The battery being a pain point is a big thing, but I also agree that it is at least still better than say, what Apple is doing, where even accessing the battery in the first place is a PITA.

    • @GameXData
      @GameXData 4 дні тому

    I have a 2019 Macbook pro 16” w/ intel i9 and 64GB ram 2TB ssd and also started crashing with kernel panic under heavy work load so this issue is not only with the M series. I tested the RAM with memtest86 and it appears to be a RAM issue. The computer is out of warranty and I am pretty sure the repair is worth more then the computer. My last hope is figuring out how to disable access to the faulty address range of the ram. There is a script that can be ran before reboot available on Github but I am not (yet) technically capable to pull it off. Your video and my own experience does not make want to consider apple to use processionally in the future. I suppose if repairs are done under warranty then it’s not the end of the world but once your warranty expires … you are screwed.

    I can probably explain the issues with RetroArch. Due to the design of the original N64 controller your effective tilt with the stick was limited to about 85°, games used that to calculate the inputs. Modern controllers do not have this limited range and emulators expect you to use a modern input device. This will cause inaccuracy as the "zone" of the controller is totally mismatched, Some emulator plugins probably let you adjust it but yeah, thats likely the reason why you didnt have a good experience with an authentic controller....

      Your hyperbole aside, Artic Base is a free addition to a free emulator. I would hope you're not spending money to use it.

      Honestly, outside the Surface for business line, Microsoft releasing another Intel-based Surface any time soon would be a bad move. On top of a mid-cycle refresh being unusual, it'd undermine any momentum they've gained for Windows on ARM.

      There will probably be many surface alternatives with it

    This has been so awesome to watch! I haven't purchased a switch yet as I went for a steam deck, so this is very helpful. I love how much detail and constructive criticism you both provide in your videos. Would love to hear your thoughts on what kind of setup you would recommend for steam deck users, who want to their decks like a desktop for LAN parties. I often visit my nephew, to play StarCraft. But it's a hassle moving monitors, and having dozens of cables! So any thoughts on this would be really appreciated. Can't wait to see what other videos you release.

      Glad you enjoyed the video! For your Steam Deck, it's going to depend on how you prefer to play. If you wanted to go all in on a handheld experience, either a Deckmate or Killswitch grip might be good choices to help you mount a dock or USB-C hub for power and network connection without a ton of mess. Similarly, there'd be nothing wrong with docking the Steam Deck and playing on the built-in screen with a keyboard and mouse. It's not the coziest experiest, but it's extremely efficient. Meanwhile, portable monitors are also a great option. I've a 16-inch ASUS ZenScreen that I use all the time while recording videos. You'll need to carry an extra power brick and won't cut down on cables as much, but you should be able to fit everything in a backpack at least. Alternatively, for a cheaper portable external display, capture cards can be extremely convenient if you'd find it easier to carry a laptop or tablet instead of a full monitor. I've had some great times using a Genki Shadowcast connected to a Surface Pro via the official Steam Deck dock in the past. Before I bought my portable monitor, it was my go-to method for playing consoles on bigger screens when I didn't want to take over my living room TV. This is perfect timing. I've been playing Smt Vengeance on handheld, and my hands been cramping up a storm. I might give this grip a shot
