We're a couple of nerds making videos about new and old tech while discussing how they relate to the wide world video games. Discovering how different mobile form factors make for better or worse emulation machines is one of our favorite past times.
We post a new video every two weeks and really appreciate you taking the time to read this blurb.

State of Gaming on iOS in 2024

Earlier this year, Apple was forced to open their App Store to accommodate emulators and (in certain regions) third-party app stores. That new support combined with a history of the App Store being a solid gaming platform, should make iPhones ideal gaming devices for those not looking for dedicated handhelds. Unfortunately, the reality is much less positive. BlueSky: bsky.app/profile/gamexdata....

The Xperia Play: What went wrong and why it's still interesting
I've been wanting for YEARS to be able to play some Vita games without torturing my hands (Reso Gun!!!). I just checked the Vita 3K compatibility list and it's still pretty bad, so I think it's finally time that I pick up a Vita TV and DS4 controller, I already have a bunch of games on my Vita 2000's SDtoVita card, so why not?
I'd say your negative of "now I have an old board I'm forced to sell" is a positive. Anything I can sell is a good thing to have lol.
What if title manager isn't an option? When I boot into GM9, everything looks exactly the same except for title manager not being there at all when I press the home button.
Afaik, there shouldn't be a reason for title manager to be missing. Maybe try again after verifying you have the latest version of Godmode 9 available (possibly replacing existing files for good measure).
I guess it was the end of Sony handhelds. The Vita also failed spectacularly. Switch would have failed without the Nintendo logo on it.
I want to make sure I understand this right. In order to get steam to recognize the SavePoint you have to install a windows or program on a laptop or desk top?
In this video, Windows is installed and running off the SavePoint. The SavePoint itself is just a USB-C drive.
@@GameXData I see that makes sense. Thank you.
If I bought this to use with OBS to stream Rainbow Six Siege on PS5, do you think it would look good? Would it be worth the purchase?
I wouldn't see any problem with it. For best results, make sure your PS5's outputting at 1080p or 1440p. A 4K signal won't break the Shadowcast, but you'll be wasting processing resources since the device only supports up to 1440p output.
@ thank you!
All I see is lag
So..is it good for psp games or not?
It's a nuanced question and seems to depend on the game you want to play.
I just got one of these bad boys. I got the litnxt with the weird crossmix. I love the brick itself. But I do not like it his version of crossmix. As soon as knulli is ready I’m switching to that. As it is now it’s very buggy. I’d be willing to bet the stock os is better.
It's interesting that your experience is a bit different with CrossMix OS. I haven't encountered any bugs myself during normal usage. What kinds of things are you seeing?
I'm strongly considering getting one, but I have basically zero experience with hardware modding. All I really want is to play PSP and Vita games without emulating (just not a fan) and in a way that I can easily capture the footage. Is it a good option for that?
For sure. The PSTV's pretty much the best hardware available for that purpose. Although, if you're looking to capture footage, you'll want to also invest in an HDCP-compliant HDMI adapter or capture card that bypasses HDCP (e.g., the Genki Shadowcast 1). PSTVs have hardware-level HDCP that'll prevent most capture cards from working with it without adapters.
@GameXData Thank you. I'm a little worried some of the games I'd be interested in playing are listed as incompatible with the device. Is this a major hurdle?
Unless a game depends on features the PSTV physically doesn't have (e.g., a camera), custom firmware should remove any barriers.
@@GameXData hence my inexperience with modding :\
@emeraldaly7646 You're not doing any hardware modding here. Installing custom firmware takes about 10 minutes and is an entirely guided process these days via the web browser. I'd say checkout Vita Hacks and the other links In my video description before you throw in the towel.
hell yea dungeon meshi
11:00 my God being worried about what others think of you because you have a gaming device is so incredibly stupid
It seems stupid from the context of someone interested in video games. However, plenty of folks still see them as toys. Especially 10+ years ago, gaming tech has the stigma in certain environments as being childish or unprofessional. It'd make sense that white collar workers choosing their single smartphone for the next two years likely wouldn't want to risk their image.
@GameXData that's funny to me because my current boss at a major corporation plays Fallout and other games.
@mbii7667 That's not exactly a representative sample. Different cultures value different things, and video games have more often not been seen as valuable. You really gotta put yourself in other people's shoes to understand. Hell, even these days in Chicago, some folks have treated me less seriously when I've told them I cover video game tech.
Yes it does look like a large 2D ass. 😂
I got one with MinUI and I love it. Half way through Metroid Fusion.
y problem is that sometimes whenn i press R and L or B the emulator menu opens
Sounds like those buttons may not be mapped correctly
My steamdeck has moved my wind waker save files somewhere and for the life of me, I can’t find them anywhere. I’m hoping I can search for them using this video 🤞🏻🙏🏻
what if i dont have that file in there??
I just wish the Flip DS' bottom screen was a bit bigger because some DS and 3DS games primarily run on the bottom screen or/and have heavy touch screen usage. That's the main thing deterring me from getting one.
I've honestly not found its size to be too much of an issue over time. However, a good personal gauge is whether or not you'd also find the non-XL bottom displays of DS and 3DS consoles to be too small. They're both roughly the same size as the Flip DS' bottom display.
Really well thought out and to the point review. You just picked up a sub
Your channel is a gem! Love all the DS content in particular.
I buy one and never used it… and now on 2025 im looking for moddy or something… but still close in his box. :)
How's the battery life with the lights on?
Do I have to use SD Card or can I just use any flash drive for whole process?
Afaik, a flash drive should be fine. The SD card recommendation is mainly to get around the small internal storage size for digital game downloads.
wtf this a tablet,
Way too good of a video for having this few views. Very helpful
The only way to play PSP and Vita games on a tv in full screen is by using this. The PSP when hooked to the screen can't display in full screen.
Based Koopa Troopa player in Mario Kart 8
melon ds has ds firmware support. It give you the ds or dsi menus for that extra kick of nostalgia.
Nostalgia doesn't help much when the goal is dual screen gameplay.
Would i be able to play for example Mariokart or Smashbros Multiplayer with 4 People on my Homecinema system with that new instance feature?
I don't see why not
Correction (January 6, 2025): Citra MMJ (a 3DS emulator on Android) updated last month with the ability to output to an external display. Somehow, I missed it before the video went live. Sorry for the inconvenience. Here're the steps to use Citra MMJ to output 3DS games to an external display: 1. Launch a game using Citra MMJ 2. While the game's running, use the back gesture (swiping from the side of the screen) to access app settings. 3. From the new pop-up, select "Settings" 4. Scroll to the bottom of the Settings and choose "Single Screen" for the Screen Cast option 5. Exit the menu From here, you should see the bottom screen on your Android device and the top screen on your external display. This setup will remain whether you rotate your device in portrait or landscape. Next, if you don't find the default button scheme to be comfortable, you can edit and toggle controls by once more opening app settings and selecting the "Edit Buttons/Toggle Controls" option. Caveat: While I found the feature to work well with my Duo 2, Z Fold 4, and LG Wing, I've noticed that attempting to open app settings on my Pixel 8 Pro and CMF Phone 1 resulted in either closing the game or Citra MMJ crashing outright. This might indicate a bug or incompatibility with non-Snapdragon devices.
Latest Citra MMJ supports separate screens, so 3DS is now possible on android
Thanks, must've missed it.
@@GameXData fairly new, release of mid December
Perfect timing to invalidate part of a guide I recorded before the holidays haha Super glad it exists though. And, thanks to your heads up, I at least have a pinned comment with setup steps for anyone curious.
By the way for anyone trying this in 2025 if the website is not working for you AND you modded your Wii U with AROMA you need to hold R while your Wii U boots to boot the Wii U without Aroma then the website will work.
Actually, if you've already installed Aroma, I'd recommend downloading the Dumpling app instead. It's more reliable and easier to use than the website method.
Holy shit dude, get to the point already, we all know why we're here.
Wonder if there’s a way to do this with the switch as the touch screen
im waiting for a good ds emulator because i want to earn retroachievments, controls on the phone can be a nightmare. I keep pressing the wrong button because they aren't physical. having a screen with the resolution of a ds would also be nice, the dsi had a beautiful screen and forcing games to upscale looks ugly. also having a similar screen to the original ds would make touch controls really great.
The stick isn't a downside at all for the official controller in terms of its construction. The actual downside is that they used potentiates that WILL drift over time instead of the optical encoders the original used. Meanwhile the 8bitdo stick is absolutely awful for n64 because of its limited range of motion. Which all modern sticks have for some reason. We just don't make joysticks like the n64 stick anymore we all make the gamecube/xbox/playstation style for some bizarre reason.
what does the green led light below the controller mean?
one of the most incredibly shot, informative, and just straight up Watchable channels regarding tech. y'all are killin it out here
So I haven't finished the video yet, so I'm not sure if you mention this. But those analog pressure triggers/buttons are basically how Playstation 2's Duelshock2's buttons in general worked.
Recently ordered one and was looking for a video with a bit more of an in-depth explanation like this.
Glad i went all digital and non of this physical bullshit collecting dust and taking space. All my steam games are accessible with free cloud saves when i bought the deck
I still wonder why no tablet is using the AMD Z1 Extreme chip present on the ROG Ally and Legion Go. That would probably change things.
I would say the Legion Go and OneXPlayer X1 Pro count as tablets using the Z1 Extreme or better, tbh. However, I think the main factor is that most conventional tablets (including Surface Pros) are designed for productivity and general computing rather than gaming. For those purposes, battery life and quiet fans are much more important than performance. The Z1 Extreme wouldn't quite fit the bill in either case. Meanwhile, tablets that are focused on gaming (like the ASUS Flow Z line) have no problem packing more performance discrete GPUs and native eGPU support (battery life be damned). More tablets with AMD processors will likely launch in the future, but they're not quite as obvious a choice to use for tablets as they are for handhelds.
@@GameXData Thanks for the input on this. I own both an Ally and an older Surface Pro, and my take is that the Ally is really not much more portable/lighter than a tablet+gamepad. Which is why I am looking forward to a reasonably priced and capable Windows tablet.
Oh, for sure, I totally get it. I've had similar complaints about my Steam Deck. I love using it, but it takes up so much space in my bag, I might as well bring a full laptop in certain cases. Also, while browsing tablets just now I found a Minisforum tablet with an 8840U that might be up your alley. Definitely look for some reviews before consider buying. (I've no clue how solid it is.) But might be worthwhile checking out: store.minisforum.com/products/minisforum-v3
Great video, keep up the good work
Looks like a great "couch machine" for GB/GBC and, most of all, Pico 8. I do have a Steam Deck, but I don't like playing GB, GBC or even GBA on it. And Pico 8 feels weird with such a wide machine. But it's comfy with those handles. This seems like a smaller Deck in coziness, and with the right feature set for a specific set of games. Plus, great for sitting in a tropical country by a pool with a nice parasol drink. OK, now I've convinced myself I need to go to a tropical country to play Pico 8 games.
Above all, to me, it looks so cool.
I almost got one of these from the ATT store in like 2011-2013 and I remember being disappointed by the lack of 4G, and the confusing limitations to what games could be played on it.
FINALLY! A good solution for the problem that these controllers had for YEARS!
I'm interested how's ur Flip DS holding up so far for daily use/PC gaming and Retro gaming? has anything changed since your ayaspace 2.5 video?
There's a bit of current awkwardness. About a week after this video, my internal SSD failed after a botched update to 24H2. I'm 90% sure the cause was some weirdness from an external SSD disconnecting during the update process. But, it's currently borked until my replacement drive comes in. (Replacing the internal SSD is also a bit of a hassle, if I'm being honest.) Before that series of unfortunate events, it was holding up great. Nothing had changed since the last video, but I didn't really need it to. Adding the keyboard toggle made general navigation much easier, to the extent that I found myself using it as a laptop much more often. The integrated micro SD card reader, in particular, has been a boon for managing the slue of handhelds I've reviewed in the past year. Gaming has likewise been solid. I was about 11 hours into HeartGold before the SSD failure, and it felt about as good as the DSi XL I switched to afterward. I also had a great time replaying Alpha Sapphire and a few Wii U games over the past few months. Meanwhile, for native gaming, the extra performance of the 7840U compared to my Steam Deck has been noticeable. My Steam Deck often needs to make a compromise between frame rate or graphics; the Flip DS has that problem much less often. If I had any long-term gripes it'd be first and foremost that the rumble isn't great. Maybe it's me being spoiled by good controller haptics elsewhere, but I've had to turn it off out of annoyance. Second would be that the controls haven't felt better over time. They're fine and more than useable, but I'd really love to have the same hardware with a bit more button travel and a bit less of a recess on the sticks. (Kinda like how the 3DS is set up.)
@@GameXData Thank you for your reply. I personally own the GPD Win Mini 2023 version, which I sold recently. Now, I'm considering whether it's worth trying the Flip DS. I'm a little concerned about the battery life. Honestly, I wish Ayaneo would refresh the flip with a better design (it's too thick tbh) I'm waiting for the 2025 refresh for the win mini, but i'll certain see if i can get more feedback from long term users. Thanks buddy
Im not giving nintendon't money
Great video. Could a Surface Pro 11 work as a PC for PCVR gaming with a Meta Quest 3? Most specifically, Half Life Alyx
I wouldn't think so. Beyond any potential compatibility issues, VR gaming on integrated GPUs has never been great. There's a good chance you could get a VR environment or lighter game running, but you likely wouldn't be able support the frame rates and detail needed for a smooth experience.
