    The trick with clay is that it must dry very slowly and evenly. It's common practice to wrap the clay part in some badly sealed plastic bags so you keep some moisture inside as it dries over about a month (sometimes you can cut it down to about two weeks depending on what's in the clay).

      Another ceramicist here! The clay was also under " stress" because as it was shrinking from the water evaporating, it was wrapped around the glass lid which had no give, so clay typically has a shrinkage rate of around 10%, and without that extra space to shrink it cracked along any weak point it could find!

    Be careful what type of lightbulb you use as some lightbulbs can get quite hot and as the plants dry out the lightbulb could ignite them.
    Best bet would be to use LED lights as they do not give off heat.

    • @killerbee.13
      @killerbee.13 Рік тому +8

      LED light bulbs actually give off quite a bit of heat, which one will quickly learn if one ever tries to unscrew an LED bulb immediately after turning it off without letting it cool down, though aiui most of that heat comes from the supporting circuitry instead of the LEDs themselves (I think they call it a ballast by analogy with CFLs even though it's… not really a ballast). They just give off like 90% less heat than an equivalently bright incandescent, and also still a lot less than fluorescent. For a low-power bulb like this one, it's probably not a fire hazard, but I couldn't say that with 100% confidence. I'd probably compare it against the power rating allowed for christmas tree lights to determine safety if I were doing this myself.

    Actually flamp solves an issue for me, which is that I do like flowers but don’t keep vases around for them because then I have to keep a single function object around and store it when not in use and it’s just too much for my tiny brain and tiny apartment. But flamp is not useless when there are no flowers because it is still a lamp. It would just need to be a good lamp when flowers are absent and not a glaring naked bulb. And flowers do deserve more than just a random water glass, and the gentle glow from within is beautiful. Bonus points if flamp has a dimmer switch or color changing LED options for maximum bouquet customization.

    You're probably going to get lots of people telling you how to cut a glass bottle, but honestly the water method is really satisfying when it works! You needed to fill the bottle with boiling water to the cut line, not just pour it over, then plunge it into a bucket of very cold water. You don't even need to hit it then, the temperature difference does the work for you, it just goes "ting!" and splits.

      I was thinking of hot/cold, too way back in the 70s I used to cut off the top of wine bottles to make vases. I can't remember the details but it employed ice, a string, maybe parafin? Maybe one fills the bottle with ice water, tie paraffin-soaked twine around the line you want to cut, then set the twine on fire? I remember however it went, it was really easy, neat and clean. I think I sanded the edges of the vase and that was it. Maybe there's YT video of the method somewhere...

    They make some very convincing artificial flowers now, so you could probably get some of those and make it look just as pretty but without needing to replace the flowers. You could also use like, clear resin to make it look like it has water and hold the flowers in, so there's no chance of spillage!

    A flamp for fake flowers would be cool
    I’m bad at taking care of cut flowers 😅
    And if it’s all fake, you don’t need water, and can route the wiring into the base

    Further to this: Invert the idea, put waterproof LEDs in the water and suspend a living plant into it. This way you can recycle, reuse and reduce waste and bonus a flamp the whole family can enjoy! P.S... TOTALLY MAKING ONE OF THESE now... DIYaddict#NoREALLY

    that reaction to turning the lamp on is the best. just pure joy. not over the top or anything that could be misconstrued as faking it, just a simple joy from looking at some nicely lit up flowers. the most wholesome thing ive seen on youtube all week. even beating out Mr Kitters. which is quite the accomplishment.

    i would love a flamp that was like, an actually flower pot. So you could grow stuff in it and it was a lamp (with a LED bulb or something to help stop it burning/killing the plant)...Or even one of those lights that are meant to mimic sunlight for indoor plants!

    Think I'm going to stick a desk lamp in the pot of my indoor Monstera while I wait for my Flamp. Should project Swiss cheese shadows all over the room. Flamp is a legitimately great idea for fresh flowers, so easy to pick wildflowers or foliage (where allowed) when out for a walk and replace each stem as they get old. Perpetual bunch of flowers! I hope there will be a 220-240V version. You two are awesome together.

    I also don't like watching flowers die, so I would give an option for fake flowers as well ;) and as others have already mentioned, a low power LED would be best here, to prevent a lot of heat drying out the real flowers and/or melting plastic flower lol.
