Bob’s son here… I generally try to stay out of comment sections, but happened to scroll through some here… shaking my head at you fools taking him down, and stoked to see the good memories of those who witnessed these shows and “got it”. Sammy is badass, no doubt. They were different vocalists… Ronnie wanted to keep the band going, but in hindsight him and Bob should probably have instantly started writing new tunes together instead of being a damn tribute act. Go listen to Rich Man, or Whaler.. then tell me he was unlistenable or just serviceable. Pops got an unbelievable opportunity to join this band after being a huge fan, and was just a kid at the time. I mean, you can’t ask for much cooler history. Guarantee he could sing figure 8’s in his sleep around y’all haters too. 😂

I happen to like the earlier stuff with Sammy and yes he is badass, but the stuff with Bob James has some really great stuff too so anybody that knocks it just doesn't appreciate good music and some really good lyrics as well, Whaler is great but so is Matriarch - Dancin' Feet - O Lucky Man. c'mon that stuff is killer too, so any haters I got a one finger salute for you.🖕

I was at this concert, my first ever concert. Think about this lineup. UFO opened the
show, then Montrose came on, and Journey headlined. This was way before Journey
completely changed their sound with Steve Perry on vocals.
The only downside was, no Sammy on vocals with Ronnie.

I saw this guy as the singer for Montrose in Wheeling WV at the Capital Theatre about 75 or so.He tried to be cool and strutted out to edge of the stage, stuck his leg out, and someone pulled him in to the crowd. Funny as hell!! Ronnie Montrose was great. Another strange thing about the show, Golden Earring was going to be the opener, they cancelled and were replaced by Bob Seger, before Live Bullits. Seger was awesome, little did we know how big he get to be. Anytime I hear the live Katmandu, I remember the sax player on top of the stack of loudspeakers. What an unexpected lifelong memory! I almost forgive him for allowing his song on that truck commercial.

On October 16th of 1975, I attended a concert at the (then named) Municipal Auditorium in Birmingham, Alabama which was headlined by Black Oak Arkansas, along with Foghat (as the 2nd-billed band), and with the opening-act Montrose. UNFORTUNATELY, my arrival there was delayed, and I totally missed Montrose's set. I have LONG BEEN bummed-out that I wound-up missing them play, and (as it turned-out) I never got a chance to see them again. On the night that I am writing this "comment", it has been 40-years to-the-day since that evening -, and I had come here to UA-cam to VERY BELATEDLY get an idea of what I missed on that long-ago occasion. Thank you "Winterland Official" !

My feelings to the family and friends of Robert "Bob" James, exceptional vocalist and person!
Montrose: Robert "Bob" James, singer who replaced Sammy Hagar in the band, dies
Robert "Bob" James, a former Montrose singer, apparently died of complications from a stomach ulcer.
The information was released by producer and composer Dino Maddalone via facebook, who says "shocked and saddened by the death of Bob James", who would be 68 or 69 years old.
Robert joined Montrose in the place of Sammy Hagar, who recorded the band's first two albums and left in 1975 to pursue a solo career, having subsequently joined Van Halen. Meanwhile Robert records two albums with Montrose, "Warner Bros. Presents ... Montrose!" from 1975 and "Jump On It" from 1976. After the end of Montrose, Robert went on active composing and playing with members of bands such as Cheap Trick, Motley Crue, Quiet Riot and Humble Pie.
Shocked and very sad my life long friend Bob James has died .. Bob replaced Sammy Hagar in the band MONTROSE. Incredible Rock singer ... RIP my friend

The correct date of this show is either April 4th or 5th 1975 and marked the debut of keyboardist James Alcivar and new vocalist Robert James who replaced Sammy Hagar. This video represents about a third of their full set which featured one new song, 'Matriarch', which would end up as the lead track of the band's third album "Warner Bros. Presents... Montrose", released five months later in September 1975. The remainder of their set was comprised of material from the first two Hagar-era albums and various covers as heard here. There were no contractual issues preventing the band from performing Hagar-era material. Other bands on this bill included Man and Thee Image.

Montrose's chances at becoming a heading act went right out the window what Hagar was fired. Bob James was the wrong choice for replacement, even if the next couple of albums were ok. "Jump On It" even has some interesting material and good production. But they were building on that first 1973 album. To kill that momentum dead in it's tracks is a bummer. I can see why Ronnie would be depressed. He walked away from the Edgar Winter Group as they were going right to number one, and then fires Sammy as that album is going gold. You only get one of maybe two chances for a dance to the top of the bill.

Drove 6 hours to see him at remote casino ,in what turned out be one his last shows . Small venue , maybe 50 people lounge setting ….he was still great . Too me he was who Van Halen used as a foundation for their act. It was inevitable that Sammy would end up in Van Halen…

My second show at Winterland was Jefferson Starship, 1975.05.16 , and before the first band (Sons of Champlin) came on, they played black and white video of Montrose, taped live at Winterland sometime previous. Where is that video, I wonder? I haven't checked setlist fm website but those Montrose shows might be there. Sometimes it just the headliner, date and venue, sometimes the other act(s) are noted, and sometimes even the actual setlist!

Joe Lee: ~ What you see in this video was the "short set" that Montrose was playing, when they were on-tour during mid-to-late 1975 as the "opening act" for Black Oak Arkansas and Foghat. This was ALSO right after Sammy Hagar left the band; and I have the impression that the band Montrose was somehow "contractually forbidden" to play songs which Sammy had co-written with Ronnie Montrose. (If you are adequately familiar with the "Montrose" debut album -, the ONLY song from that album that is featured on this video is the 1940s-era song "Good Rockin' Tonight".) I personally was disappointed, though, that "Rock the Nation" (which was solely written by R. Montrose) and "Dancin' Feet" (which was the "single" released from their then-new album) were not included in this set.

    • @jonsilence
      @jonsilence 8 років тому +8
