The first Montrose album never got the recognition it truly deserved. Truly a rock masterpiece . One of my favorites to this day
Agreed. I love it so much that I have three vinyl copies!
Just listened to it for the first time this week. Tons of attitude on that record!
My favorite and then Warner Brothers Presents was over the top
It did in later years . . Upon its initial release it did get some airplay but with bands like Deep Purple , Led Zeppelin , The Doobies , Uriah Heep etc this album got a bit lost in the shuffle at the time which was 1973 . Today some 50 years later magazines like Kerrang , Metal Edge and Rolling Stone all have this LP at the top of their all time great list . I would also like to mention that even though the follow up , Paper Money , sold well , it was nowhere near the great album the debut was and by the time 1976 came around bands like Frampton , Kiss , Zeppelin and many other hard rock acts ( including Heart ) we’re all over the airwaves . So short response is yes it finally gets the credit and recognition it deserves it just took some extra time , as in decades lol
One of my favorites, So many good guitarists at that time, He was one of the best,
I don’t always listen to Montrose, but when I do….so do the neighbors!!🔥👊🏽🎶🎶🤣🤣🔊🔊🥁🎤🎸
true story!
😂😂😂👍
I don’t always use clichés but when I do, this one of them.
I'd play live at leeds or damn the torpedoes at 10, all windows open.... My mom was pissed cause all the cars would pull up.
Awesome 👌!!
I was 8 yrs old in 1974. Became a Sammy Hagar fan in the mid 80's and now I'm 57 in the year 2023 and Sammy is still rockin' it. 😊
I was born in 1966 too. I somehow missed Montrose in the 1970s. Be well my fellow Gen Xer.
@@rick3747Darn, I was watching this and was born in '66 also. What a coincidence, or was it?
@@DRILL-SGT.HARTMAN
Hey, crazy right.
I was 11 and learned quickly who they were!!
It's like you wrote my biography...word for word!
Everybody discusses how influential Montrose was, but few mention how critical Bill Church's hyper Bass playing and Denny Carmassi's aggressive drumming were to the sound of this band. They were the reason one guitar was "enough" in this band.
By this point, rhythm guitarists were unnecessary due to advancements in both guitar playing, effects technology and better sound systems. And the theremin in Ronnie's case.
I'm hearing this band for the first time, but I dont see a virtuoso guitarrist. So, it makes sense what you say for a band like this one sound so powerful.
All the bands that had this configuration that made it had strong to phenomenal rhythm sections .
@@Bunbunfunfun Hot shot guitarists can't drive the car if the wheels, aka rhythm section, are off-balance.
Teenagers from the MTV generation will recognize Denny Carmassi as the drummer for Heart in all of their videos during the 80's
Every time I start to hate the internet, I stumble upon a gem like this.🤯
Exactly bro!! That's what I just did!! Even though I've seen it before it still had the desired affect!!!

I met Sammy back in 1990 in Malibu where I was working as a chef, I made him lunch and told him how much I loved this album, his response word for word was ," THAT'S THE BEST ALBUM I'VE EVER DONE OR EVER WILL DO !!!! "
Thats a cool story
He also said that about 1013 as well.
I could probably agree with that.
Then he went on to make music with van halen and blow that statement right out the water !
He left Van Halen in 1996, 7 years after your supposed conversation, but that's a weird admission if that even happened. I'm going to call Sammy now and ask if Joel Scheinzeit is full of Scheinzeit.
I met Sammy at his book signing in 2011 and told him that the first Montrose album got me through high school. He laughed and said, me too!!
Sammy is 75 this year and still rockin 🤘
Just saw him in Dallas in September. Fantastic!
Sammy was 27 in this clip 😊
he hit on my mom after the summer jam concert in st.louis in the lobby of the Marriot .around 1979 ish
Is he the dude who ate the little skinny dude in this clip?
Sammy and Bill Clinton same age. Only one is aging well 😅
That first Montrose record is still my favorite Hagar recording of all time.
Yeah no question. Every song on that album is bad ass!
One of the great classic albums of all time!
I agree but loved alot of those early Sammy records too especially Street Machine and the Red album
OUThinkSo?
I don't.
That's a real 70s rock album. One of the very first.
Ronnie Montrose, one of the most underrated guitarist of the 70s, as well as Robin Trower.

Don't forget about Pat Travers another underrated guitarist of that time
50 years later and Sammy is still killing it.
Just plain kick ass! The way rock was meant to be played! I was a sophmore in high school when I scored my first Montrose album! Definitely the greatest era where freedom still reigned and if I could go back in time when I was 15 years old I would! What more can I say!
Sammy has been around forever and he is still kicking it today like he was 23. Cheers Sammy, keep on rocking.
Yeah man when I'm at home and I wanna rock out to a true guitar legend i will reach for papermoney and put it on the platter. And pump it through my nine gx 1978 Kenwood stereo and I'm in heaven. God bless Ronnie montrose and r.i.p.
I prefer Paper Money, and Warner Bros Presents but the debut is alright. I also like Sammy Hagar - 9 On a 10 Scale a lot
Some great songs but why did Sammy Hagar adopt that Bea Arthur look to perform Paper Money
I'm sure he'd appreciate the "forever" part of your complement. Lol. You know how old people are.
Making it last- rock on Sammy!
Sammy has really done it all. Montrose, a badass solo career, Van Halen etc. he’s took great care of himself and looks great now at 71! He’s a true rockstar
Must be the tequila and island living.
im kinda meh about all his van halen stuff and alot of his solo stuff......im 45 so i wasnt around for montrose but this is perfect..nice and raw more soulful than anything else i seen him do. i HATED him trying to sing highway star awhile back.
@@gristams3439 this shit was killer back then every young guitar player i knew, in my teens learned to play rock candy , make it last and these 2 numbers. That les paul when Ronnie played chords and let them ring such sustain in that guitar
@scott in my day it was randy rhodes playing the les paul and we all learned (tried to learn) mr crowley and crazy train. but yea this shit rocks too...sucks how im freaken 45 and still never heard this much growing up.
Sammy is really old lol. But seriously, Van Halen used to jam with Montrose songs. Hard to get my head around that David Lee Roth use to sing Sammy’s songs.
Sammy, your voice is as strong today as it was when you were kicking ass at this time! Thank you for all your years of desire, talent, energy, love of music (food) and fans!!! You have never lost sight of your love of music, #1, and your love of the fans!
Bands like Montrose, UFO and Y&T, are all in my book, the kinds of bands that are timeless. They're in a different class than the "superbands" of their day. IMHO they're better - They all had top-notch musicians and vocalists - they put out multiple albums that you could listen to end-to-end and never get tired of, and they innovative in a different way than those other bands. To me their music is as fresh and original as the day it was recorded. These guys are the true bedrock of the genre.
My words! Like the same bands.
I’d add Thin Lizzy to that very special group.
100 % agree man
Can't forget Captain Beyond.
The first Montrose album is one of those few perfect albums, from start to finish
Agreed, not a dud on that whole album!

It still upsets me that NOT one of these records EVER got played on American radio. None of us had ANY montrose records in the mid 70s. And we were waiting for this stuff so bad. It wasnt til Maiden covered "I got the fire" a SECOND time on the B side of Icarus that we knew an American band was playing the shit we needed but we didnt know about it. There was NO UA-cam or Iternet back then and our Music stores didnt even have Montrose records.
@@dennycorvetto1566 considering who was in the band makes it even more of a mystery it went without much sales. Guess they hadn't figured it out yet. Their 1st album is one of my top ten all time. Look at what the members became to rock n roll.
I went to a make out party back in 1974. Every one brought a album to share & play. I brought Montrose debut album! It blew everybody away, everyone said they never heard such heavy rock music before like that, that album is still in my top five. I don’t remember her name but I remember her face. Those were the best of times!!!
I saw montrose in 1974 at Cobo hall in Detroit, they opened for Arrowsmith. I was 16 and I will never forget that night. Montrose rock my soul and Sammy's voice was electrifying. There aren't many bands like that left.
Your a rocker...😮
Montrose and Aerosmith would be an awesome concert especially back then.
I saw Montrose in fall 1974, opening for Robin Thrower, and Foghat, at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston. They were terrific.
I am so glad that I was born in the late'50s and got to do my teens and early 20's during the '70s. All of the concerts and bands that we got to see! There isn't much out there now, and if it wasn't for UA-cam, there would be alot less!👁️🎸🎤😘
thumbs up brother.
I had my teens n 20s growing up in the 80s. Them hair bands tho! I’ve seen tons of shows. I wouldnt go see any of these current bands if the lived across the street.
so, curious.... are u a democrat?...but NO POLITICS right? love the jams
I agree - the stuff even to the mid 90s has a band feel to most of it . A lot of stuff this century is written on computers - it’s robotic.
MorbidManMusic-Sorry, Bro, but I don't get your meaning. The stuff that you have posted(Sly/Clapton) sounds like we're on the same wavelength. The '60s and '70s is what we have to come back to, to ROCK. The '80s were okay, but Motown was dead and a lot of the bands started looking and sounding the same. More experimentation in the '60s and the '70s(Hendrix, Stooges,Alice Cooper, ect).
Seriously, Sammy Hagar is Rocks most under-rated singers ever and during his solo career, proved to be a formidable guitarist and prolific songwriter !!!! .
Montrose/Montrose is one of the best albums of all time. Every song on it is great. No fillers.
The ‘70s were the best. Great time to be a teen in high school. Awesome music. I have Montrose first album, a pre-release, not for sale demo for radio station promotional. Kicks ass.
I was 15 in 1970 and grew up on this music - just thought that the guitarist (as good as he is) is not the best in the band!
70’s were good. Saw Led Zeppelin for my first concert, but the early 80’s proved to be the best time of my life.
Upload that thing so we can enjoy it, and do it Pronto amigo 😏
Priceless....I saw Montrose in the mid-70"s as a back up to Ted Nugent at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. Ted asked the crowd "what about that Ronnie Montrose?" The crowd went wild....great memory
Montrose, Trower, Foghat, James Gang, Mountain, Rare Earth, Creedence, Deep Purple, Zepplin, Uriah Heep, Kiss, Aerosmith, Rush, ZZ Top, Nugent, and many more in the 1970s. It was a fantastic time for sure!

Sweet. This is the first band I saw live, right at about the time of this video. It was at Winterland, San Francisco. I was fourteen, and a few of my 8th grade friends got one of the dads to drive us out to the city. I don't know why any of our parents consented. We had a blast, though, in awe that we were in Winterland, and finally getting to experience a real rock show! And Montrose was so heavy. What a great, tight band. If you haven't caught the tribute concert for Ronnie you need to, incredible line up, excellent hat tip to one of the greats, that being said, Sammy told the story of how Ronnie looked out for him, got him set up with a trusted publisher to protect his songs, he could have pulled a Gene Simmons or a Sharon Osbourne and steal his songs for his own personal gain, but he didn't, he set him up for a long and successful career, that shows what an awesome person, not just an awesome musician, he was. Sammy Hagar was quite a badass with Ronnie Montrose and those rockers of yesteryear , what a session !
My older brother (21)was listening to a record at his bedroom. I (14/15) was wondering what supersound it was because i didn't reconise this music. So i went to his room and asking from who these great music come? Hé gets up from his bed (where he always was lay when hé listening music) and turned up the volume to the max and screamed " this is Sammy Hagars album Montrose"! And we started together headbanging and playing the airguitar. Hahaha. I will never forget these day. Since this day i almost listening every month once or two times the full album (one of the best masterpieces ever) and remember the day i became a Hagar/Montrose fan.
This is the rock n roll music right here, kids. Having grown up in the ‘80s and never hearing Montrose on the radio, I’m not sure I would have recognized this as Sammy until the number that starts at around the 12:00 mark. That’s where I start to hear the familiar husky roar of prime Hagar.
I can't drive 55 was my first hearing Sammy. I didn't know of Montrose until right now. Awesome stuff. Love everything Sammy did and he's still rocking!
Jesus... thank you for rock and roll. I just don’t know what red blooded rocker fans would listen to if the electric guitar would have skipped our civilization. Thank you Sammy and friends.
Montrose's 1974 " paper money" album is a masterpiece, one of the best rock records of the 1970s.
This Video Kicks Ass !!!!
It will Never Get Old.
This is Montrose at its Finest !!!
Thank You for posting this Brother !!!
Got to see Montrose twice. Once in Oakland, and once in Redding, California.
They were outstanding!
RIP Ronnie Montrose!
I saw them.
Rush
Montrose
Robin Trower
Phila Spectrum
Nov 1976
Great concert
Great lineup wow!!
What an eclectic sonic feast you had that night! Stellar artists, one and all.
I regret never seeing Mr. Trower
@@marywagner3644 He is still recording and touring, so you may still have the opportunity to see him!
@@marywagner3644 He was great. The singer, James Dewar was strong.
I think the drummer here Denny Carmassi plays for Heart now.
Ronnie Montrose has a Theramin mounted on his guitar! That's crazy genius stuff!!
Yeah, he was almost as fascinated with it as Joe Bonamassa is (or was for a while there..) Only Jimmy Page used it with finesse and restraint. LOL!
I remember playing 'Bad Motor Scooter' and 'I Got the Fire' in my band back in the 70's. I loved this song, and I loved the album. Montrose was Bad-Ass. Good memories!
Remember this song well. Perfect 70s jam.
Montrose 1st album I one of the best debuts in rock history.
Denny Carmassi goes criminally underrated as a drummer
yet he's drummed for everyone
I’ve said the same thing since this album came out !
naw. he's drummed for everyone. he's recognized as one of the best.
Didn’t he play with Heart
Rock Candy intro. Nuf said.
O yes. This brings back memories of the 70's when I was a teenager. It reminds me of just how good a guitar player Ronnie Montrose was.
I first heard Montrose when I was 17 years old at friends place. He just bought the album on a chance the music would be good. There was about 5 of us & we were knocked on asses by the music. I don't remember how many times we listened to that album that day but it was alot. Safe to say we were & still are huge Montrose fans. Unfortunate he was such an underated guitar musician along with Robin Trower. Execellence is to be savored.
I think Hagar's voice got even better as the years went by. His voice is still strong as hell.
No, Sammy Hagar was never cooler than he was in this video. He's gotten progressively lamer with every passing year.
His voice is amazing here. It is just mixed too quiet and the gear sucks.
Clifford Amey I am going to have to agree with you. If you listen to the 1st Montrose album you'll notice that Hagar's range isn't as much as any later album he was on.
@@profd65 Agreed.....good voice...but no lyric writing skills.....NOTHING compared to DLR,,,,Davey Lee could tell a story man.....Sammy?...wondered if time could stand the test of time....WTF?
@Andy Wilkinson he was saying “only time will tell if we stand the test of time” makes sense to me
I saw 2 Montrose tribute concerts about 5 yrs ago here in the Sacto area where Ronnie lived. One was a outdoor Sammy Hagar concert with a special Ronnie tribute in the middle when Dave Meniketti came out and they played 3/4 of the 1st Montrose album and the 2nd show was Rick Derringer with Frank Hannon of Tesla in a small club playing Montrose and Gamma tunes the whole night...man both those concerts kicked ass hearing all those bad ass songs. I was in rock n roll heaven.
what,this bill missed,it,,,,,dolla,says,,,good for you
Wow .... never saw this before ...... incredible. Had the album since '76. Loved it then .... still love it now.
I listened to the first Montrose album over and over when I was in high school! BEST!!!!
