Please check local laws in your country/state before doing this!
I make a full backup with Make MKV and extract afterwards with dvdaudio extractor (not freeware). The XTC blu-ray's are very difficult to rip with all the different mixes.
REALLY helpful video, Andrew! Thoughtfully and clearly explained - thank you.
Thank you SO MUCH!! Managed to extract the "Rammstein in Amerika" concert from my Blu-Ray disc and to make a Hi-Fi bootleg out of it! 🤩
Thank you mate - easy and concise method to follow.
The only one note I would suggest, is Mediainfo is simply a metadata reader. I would only use it to make sure the rips you've made are aligned. I wouldn't use it to check other files. You can encapsulate a FLAC from an MP3 and its fooled. Only way to be sure is to use something like spek and analyse the waveform. Thats kind of outside the scope of this instruction though. :)
That's a good point worth making, I agree anything can misleadingly appear to be hi Res if it's encoded that way!
@@AndrewDixonMusic great reply Andrew - thank you. Good luck to you sir, I appreciate your youtube video!
Andrew - looking forward to have you explain the devices you use to store your library and how you can access the library in different rooms in the house or even while on the road. Thanks for the info!
Thanks Andrew, that was very informative to a computing idiot like me.
Good to see how you convert your BluRays 👍🏼
Thanks Andy, you’re a lifesaver! Was a tremendous help with the Mind Games box!
Brilliantly explained, thanks very much Andrew 👍
I am in the process of extracting some files from a Blue Ray atm. And it worked perfectly Thank You
Nice quick way to get to multichannel.
Many thanx from Italy!
Very useful information Thankyou
Love your channel, thank you so much for the tutorial!
@@ArthAttack Thanks for watching 👍
Well done, well explained and easy to follow, thank you.
Hmm, this is very simple compared to my using the DVDFab Passkey and DVD Audio Extractor that I've been using for years, but lately, some Blurays just take forever to read (or not read at all) such as the new Tears for Fears Songs for a Nervous Planet Bluray. I just created mkv files with the MakeMKV software so will try this method. Thanks, Andrew!!
@@FVD good luck with it, I feel it's a nice simple method! 👍
@AndrewDixonMusic worked like a charm, mate. Thanks again!
Perfect tutorial!!!
Thank you! 👍
sorry, did I miss the part where you get the name of the tracks?-Do you do it manually or by software? P.S. Love your channel!!!
Music Media Helper has a menu option at the top of the screen which will try and get the tagging info from an online database.
Hi Andrew, I have been on a ‘Hi FI hiatus’ for decades. I want to get good digital files from my CDs. Would the method you have described in this video be a suitable method for ripping from CD? Also, I am looking for a nice sound system to play these files. How are people playing ripped (stereo) CDs in their homes, these days? Many thanks Andrew, Phil, Canada. Liked and Subscribed 👍
Hi Phil, ripping a CD is much easier than the process I show here for DVDs and Blu Rays. I would recommend software called EAC (Exact Audio Copy) which is free and can rip to a variety of formats.
To play them back you would either be looking playing them through a computer that's connected to a DAC and stereo system, or the modern way now would be to save those files to a network drive and connect a streamer which would be connected to your hi fi.
When I eventually get chance to make my next video on this subject I'll be showing exactly how I do that 👍
Had to comment about pop goes the 60's video today, his unboxing of a new McCartney archive release, got me excited until he showed it "The worst of Paul McCartney" on of course....April fools day!
@@chocolateboyuk Until he opened it I thought it was going to be the long awaited London Town or Back To The Egg archive sets, the swine!
Thanks Andrew
Will have to try this. Thanks.
Hi thanks for such informative video How to convert ripped m2ts to mkv in pc ?
Thanks! 👍 Not sure about m2ts files but this article doesn't seem to recommend it: forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=28056
@@AndrewDixonMusic Thank you
Really interesting. Although I listen to my bluray/dvd music via the original discs I may need these tools on the future. I assume you use digital versions of all your vinyl LPs and don't copy them from the albums. I copy my vinyl-only records to PC using audacity and then onto CD to slot into my collection.
I've only got a very small number of vinyl albums/songs that I don't also have on CD, so yes I do needle drops of those in to Audacity to get a digital version but it's something like 3 albums
Great [and helpful] post, Andrew - Thanks!
A quick question for you: Do you know if extraction works 'through' a DVD-DL layer 'jump' [hope you know what I'm talking about there! 😉] I've tried to grab audio from music dvd's in the past and that layer jump always seems to cause issues - MInd you it's a LONG time since I tried it so hopefully your method works. 🤞
Thanks from Ireland! 😉
Thanks! Unfortunately I don't know the technicalities of what a layer jump is so I don't know if that's what happens here!
Hi Andrew, I tried to use MakeMKV and my Blu-ray drive to rip 5.1 surround mixes of Depeche Mode's Violator from the DVD, but MakeMKV only detected the PCM stereo files. Is there a solution?
Hi, not sure but maybe the answer can be found at the MakeMKV forum at forum.makemkv.com ?
I really appreciate the tutorial, I was able to extract the audio of a live concert from my Sign O' the Times boxset.
At the time of this writing, I wanted to do the same with the King Crimson 40th Anniversary DVDs and it puts all the audio tracks in one file.
If you know of a solution I would be very grateful!
For the time being I will use audacity to trim the tracks I am interested in.
@@_hitsuji418 If it's held.as just one file on the disc then Audacity would be the answer. Add labels at the appropriate points then Export -Multiple
@@AndrewDixonMusic Thanks for your confirmation, I will see how the multiple export works, it is the first time I know about it.
I need to buy a Blu ray drive for my MAC so I can do this with music which is mostly 5.1 discs. What drive do you use or any recommendations as I've read that most don't work when buying now due to firmware updates. Looked on AV forum but no updated info. Thanks.
@@LovingLincoln Mine is a several year old Toshiba drive, not available any more. Not sure what the best current models are.
@@AndrewDixonMusic Ahh ok, thanks for quick reply.
Hi Andrew, this was very informal and very useful, Thank You
But would I be able to use the software you stated in your video to transfer the 2015 mixes of Free As A Bird and Real Love (which are videos) from the 1+ box set to MP3 so I can listen to it when I'm on the move ?
Hi, you would do it exactly the same way as I showed 👍
@@AndrewDixonMusic Thank You
I can easily do it from DVD but I have been unable to do it from a protected BD.
Hi Andrew! What kind/make of Blu-ray external drive reader are you using? Thank you
Hi,.it's a Toshiba, several years old, I expect it will be a discontinued model
Hi there... Can you help with this but with a MacBook Pro? Thank You
I have a suggestion for you because recently I’m listening to a lot of music by thinking it could’ve actually be @thebeatles but it’s not ! So my suggestion is that maybe you could make a video with a selection of songs which are similar to #theBeatles but which aren’t from them.
Spot on Thank You
What alternative for music media helper is available that works on MacOS?
Once MakeMKV has made it's files you can drop them in to Audacity and split by track, then export to wherever you wish.
How you put the info metadata of the songs?
@@spookyec Can either be done in MM7 or however you'd normally do it (e.g. iTunes or a tag editor or any player with tag editing facilities)
Can I get the filenames on a easy way?
I ripped John Lennon GIMME SOME TRUTH. and now I have Output-01 (to 36).FLAC.
I need the filenames, and I don't wanna write them!!! Can you help with that, too? And Thanks a lot!
Hello
And do you think it’s also possible with SACD ?
All my best
Hi, sorry I don't know whether the software would deal with those discs.
Andrew - on a completely different subject than this video - have you watched the latest video out today about the McCartney release on Pop Goes the 60s? I assume you must be aware of that channel. I thought of you when I saw it. No way would you not be first with this information! 🙂 (if it was reality!)
Hi, have a look at today's date on the calendar 😉
@@AndrewDixonMusicI knew it was a spoof at the beginning! It was hysterical and sure must have been a lot of work and creative thinking. One way I knew it was a spoof right away is because there had been no word about a Mc collection from you. It would be very frustrating if that collection was real!! yikes! I know for sure that Paul would not have a cover with Heather on it. 😂
You need a blu ray ripper in the first place dvd drive won't work
My God what a palaver! It’s times like this when I think maybe I’m right sticking to Mac! Admittedly I pay for software if it does what I want. Still if it works for you then all good 👍
The only paid software I ever found that advertised itself as being able to do this turned out to not be able to what it claimed. Sometimes the free stuff is the best!
How about just playing the Blu-ray/DVD as intended to be used!
Many reasons to give more options. Accessing some of the audio options is almost impossible unless a TV is also connected, which for a regular hifi system often isn't.
Flexibility of where the music can be played (different players in different parts of the house). Safety of having a back up in case the main disc ever gets damaged. Plenty of other reasons.
Because I don't have a Blu-ray / DVD player in my car (but it can play 5.1 ch FLAC files)... Because my hi-res DAP takes microSD cards, not discs... Because by putting the files on my server I can stream them wherever I need them... plenty of reasons for me 😊
Andrew, contact me as I have a really good idea for your music management. I have been a streamer like you for over 10 years.
Hi, what's the idea? 🙂
