  • If you're like Robbie, you may not have a DVD/BluRay player connected to your TVs, but have connected devices that allow you to play video files through software such as Plex. This week we'll show you how to import your video DVDs into MP4 files so you can watch your owned DVDs once again on next-gen devices such as Roku and Amazon Fire TV.
Also watch our 2019 followup video that answers several of the common questions, including ripping episodic DVDs (multiple episodes per disk): • How to Rip Episodic DV...

I had over 1000 dvd at one point in 2010. Running out of space to store them. I looked for a way to rip the dvd's to a file type like mp4. Resolutions were 720p back then. So I converted everything to 1080p with Handbrake. Very time consuming process. Now I use MKVmake. It's a very simple process and it only takes about 15 minutes or so to rip a dvd. Most of the DVDs I gave away to friends. DVD or physical disk will be a thing of the past here in another few years. I have now collected over 2000 movie titles and I'm storing everything on large capacity hard drives. This has been my method for the last 13 years now, and it works great.

This is great, thanks! I'm tired of my kids ruining DVD's that I paid $20-30 for, that we won't get to watch again. Having a regular video file that I can either stream over PLEX, put onto a USB stick (because more devices can do that now), or just burning more copies of the movie after my kids scratch up the disc will be great! A lot of people are complaining about "less yak" but I actually think it's nice that he's explaining to people who otherwise might not understand. Wish it would have just had a disclaimer: "If you're pretty tech savvy and already understand how this works, skip ahead to about 6 minutes"

Just a few points. Yes Handbrake is needed to convert your VOB files to MP4 (or MKV if you wanna be that fussy) and is probably the best converter on the market by far (I use it for converting U-Tube videos the lot). Me personally I prefer MP4 for the editing ability is much easier in Windows for the metadata without additional software. But you failed to point out the subtitle options must be fixed otherwise no subtitles will be saved with the MP4 rip and on top of that an annoy "chapter 1" etc will be burned onto the image of the movie or is the only subtitle option you have. Finally, I would rather use DVD Shrink to rip the VOB files from the disk and then convert to MP4 using Handbrake. The reason is that DVD Shrink has great features, will bypass the copyright protection without needing to add any dll's and in selecting which audio tracks and subtitle tracks you want to keep in your final MP4 file, which Handbrake picks up automatically and includes them all. There are tutorials online for this as well. As to the actual legality of this is, as said, a very grey area. If you have the original disk and raided by the police they can do nothing. However, if after 5 years you have converted your copy of the DVD and that DVD no longer is in your possession (by loss, damage or natural disaster) and you also do not have the original purchase receipt (who the hell keeps them lol) then technically the police can charge you for piracy. Just a warning for people who intend to do this. For me, I am doing it and have over 1500 titles on 4 TB of hard drive space, including all of the Star Trek TV series and many many more. The one point not noted is the amount of time it does really take. Unless you really have a powerful system (at least Quad core) and enough RAM you will be waiting hours to covert one movie unless you want really bad quality on your beautiful 60 inch screen. As to Blu-Ray that is, as said, a little more complicated, but not that much. For that you need the software called MakeMKV. As the name suggests it takes the Blu-Ray files and stores them as a MKV file. It also gets past the copyright protection software so no need for any additional tricks. The downside is that is copies the movie file from a Blu-Ray byte by byte - that is a movie file will end up been up to 20+ GB. But luckily, again, Handbrake comes to the rescue and converts that file to a MP4 or MKV that is much smaller without too much of a loss in quality. The only issue I have had personally with this approach with Blu-Rays is the time it takes to convert (large amount of time because of the size of the file) and the subtitles get all messed up on some movies because of the unique way subtitles are done in Blu-Ray. Any ways, not a critique of this video, just pointing out other options for people to explore. Cheers

I started off with Handbrake years ago, but now have and use a licensed copy of MakeMKV as my primary program for pulling content from discs. I went this way because I want the original quality of the content from disc since this is mainly in home streaming for me. I still play discs too, especially for TV shows which can be a royal pain to pull from disc and organize.
I've even gotten into 4k blu-ray via an Xbox one s and 4k TV. So, in the end, I like to keep a mix of tech as I still make use of it, at times. Great video have a great day!

I'd rather buy/barter for a 256GB USB thumb drive loaded with 300+ movies than a massive stack of 300 DVDs that are much more susceptible to damage. I can even copy the files onto other USB or external drive devices and barter with those.

MakeMKV is the best software for ripping Blu-Rays and DVDs. It will rip a non-compressed file that also includes the original audio (typically DTS-HD Master Audio). No need for compiling or anything like that. It will also bypass all copyright BS. After watching the whole video I take it these people aren't exactly tech savvy.

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade
      @SmallSpoonBrigade Рік тому

That's what I use. But, it's worth noting that DVDs aren't actually copy protected, you can copy them as many times as you like, the issue is that they are protected against playing in players that don't have the appropriate key. The result is that you don't really need DVD Shrink if you have a player that can handle the protection.
I've had a few that won't rip with DVD Shrink, but they're mostly Disney titles, and EaseFab lossless copy seems to do a decent job of turning them into a folder. Which is annoying as I prefer to have a single ISO file to keep the random files to a minimum.

I just downloaded MakeMKV and had the same issue backing up some of my DVD's when using it... So I just thought I'd try the idea in this video. I found and copied the libdvdcss-2.dll file to the MakeMKV folder (located on my PC in; C:\Program Files (x86)\MakeMKV )
When I tried MakeMKV again it began reading the DVD's it failed to read before.
So thanks for the video and idea :)

Just like physical book libraries, it's nice to have physical DVD libraries. But I agree that if you're a movie buff (and obscure older movies are NOT readily available via normal streaming services like Netflix and Hulu) they can indeed take up the entire house if you collect and keep them all. So many movies, so little time... and space.

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade

Yes, and one of the big disappointments I had with Netflix after they went digital only was that practically none of the movies that I wanted to see were available. They weren't obscure movies, but they also weren't the most famous ones either. And, if you don't mind DVD, they can be had for quite cheap these days.

If you have a Nvidia GTX graphic card(GTX 1060), I would try DvdFab and XMedia Recode. Use DvdFab to decrypt to hard drive, then use XMedia Recode to convert to the format you want. DvdFab works with both Dvd and blu-ray.

I don't use a crack version. Once the trial version is done, you can still use HD decrypter for free to copy ether the full DVD or the main movie to your hard drive. Then you use xmedia recode to transcode to the format you want. That is the way I do it.

If I get a analog to digital converter cord could I plug that in to my computer is there a way to use handbrake for saving VHS movies into files too? Will the VLC file work for the encryption on VHS too (I think macrovision is the most common)? Also what formats does Handbrake allow to save files as? What format files does Plex take?
