I consider myself very lucky to have gotten an Oppo UDP-203 for about $550 when it was released. It is still sad they no longer produce disc players anymore. They were the reference gold standard for years.
For Projectors The Panasonic UB820k is pretty much mandatory. Especially because it's the only player that allows for gamma and luminance adjustments using HDR optimizer.
But I do love ❤️ the build quality and look of the Magnetar!
Part of the reason why I chose to go with a Panasonic 9000 was due to its HDR optimizer. I can turn off dynamic tone mapping on my LG GX OLED TV and enable the optimizer on my Panasonic 9000, which then gives one a better noticeable visual result! Plus, in my particular case knowing the Panasonic is going into the arcam AVR, which also happens to have a similar sabre DAC as the magnetar I've never felt the need to ever have to go into the Panasonic network settings.
After spending a shitload on shielded cables so I have an exceptionally quiet room, I wasn't prepared to take the risk of being slightly distracted by the 820s, apparently slightly noisier disc player.
That makes a lot of sense! 🤘🎉
I wish I was in the Magnetar tax bracket 😂. Happy with my Panasonic DP-UB420 for now. Gets the job done, looks gorgeous on my Sony OLED.
Enjoy having no Dolby Vision
@@jollama only about 10% of the 150 4k Blu ray discs I own even contain Dolby Vision. HDR 10 and HDR 10+ look amazing, and they all have either. The Apple TV 4k gives me all the Dolby Vision I need, and I spent less than half the price of the UB820 on the UB420. Nice zinger though bud.
@@jollamawas that supposed to make him feel bad? 🙄
I got the Magnetar UDP 900 because in addition to my Toshiba XA2 HD DVD player, I can now play all 4.7 inch disc media. Not that it is necessary but the nerd in me enjoys that kind of thing lol. However, I can't say that I noticed a difference in picture quality over my Panasonic UB 9000.
To me, not worth it. Hard pass for the law of diminishing returns. My Sony 800m2 gives me everything i need, and keeps a LOT of money in my pocket. 98% of people are running an AVR which has its own DAC. With that amount of money saved, one could easily buy a new tv, or speaker upgrade, separate amp, etc...
I said the same thing for the past couple of years with mine (region-free 800m2), but I am starting to have more and more 4K disc read errors/freeze-up (the “layer switch” issue is what internet sluthing has discovered, so, grain of salt).
Not sure what format your collection mostly consists of, but as my 4K BD start to catch up to my HD BD numbers, it will be a problem that needs to be addressed with a better player.
@Mikes_Vices I have a mix of both like you. I only have an occasional freeze up. Maybe 3 to 4 in the past 2 years. Not killing me yet 😁
At these prices you can literally buy on the secondary market the legendary OPPO UDP-20x series which still can be serviced.
@@TidbitkidNot necessarily looking at just Magnetar, the higher end Panasonics are also an option, but I was a “the Sony players are fine” guy for the years that I had no issues… until I did start having the issues.
@@Mikes_Vices you can buy a used OPPO 203 or 205 at these prices for each of the equivalent models and still get them serviced. The OPPO have shown to hold relevant collectors pricing and still are among the best players to have been out for the Ultra-HD format with build quality OPPO has been known for along with fanless designs. They also play BD folders and BDXL folders which you have to pay on the magnetar as well as region free kits are available for them at a reasonable price for BD playback.
I've been rocking a UB820k in my system flawlessly for several years now, its a great player and does everything I could need including 3D bluray feeding a projector. Though I can appreciate the build quality of these high end machines.
Did you happen to find one region free?
@@chrisjfox8715 not sure as I don't play out of zone discs.
@@chrisjfox8715if I'm not mistaken all 4k disc is supposedly region free, 1080p blu ray disc is a different story.
So the Magnetar is Not the problem with the remaster of Twister. It's the encoding in the disc. A couple of Panasonics, the Magnetar UDP 800 and 900 and there's another brand in forgetting, all won't play this disc. I've reached out to Magnetar, spoken with them, yes, by using my voice, love this company, and they are actively working on figuring out what's going on. They ordered a copy of Twister to test this themselves.
And yes, I have the latest firmware. Again, if it was firmware the issue wouldn't be across several brands and players
Nice! Thanks for the heads up!! 🤘
The Oppo, Oops! I mean, Magnetar will suffer the same fate as its predecessor. Lack of market interest. Those who can afford $3k video players will choose Kaleidescape. The hardcore audiophiles who are into digital will buy a midfi streamer to feed a high-end dac. As usual, most HT enthusiasts will choose an inexpensive 4k player, a good to very good receiver and cheap out on speakers. Those of us who are into true two channel hifi, but also enjoy a HT movie/multichannel concert experience will have two rigs. And believe me our two channel rig will usually cost us two to three times the HT rig.
Used Oppo cheaper than Magnetar, so that's the way I went. Got tired of waiting for a sale on the Magnetar. I wouldn't choose a Kaleidescape for $3k unless it could store on my NAS.
Imagine just being the dog that lives in a house where the owners have $34K speakers and $3k Blu-ray players 😅
I have a physical media collection. I’ll just stick to my Sony 4k DVd player. Thanks for the review.
Same here :)
In my country the Magnetars are available, but very expensive. The only other new option is a locally branded 4k player, specs are complete with Dolby Vision and Atmos, and seperate audio/video HDMI ports. It's reasonably priced at around $850, a bit less if you deduct import duties etc. My friend who's an AV distributor tells me it's developed by Magnetar. That I don't know, but seems a very decent player. So only these 3 are available in my country!
Whoa! Well at least there is something available! 😁🎉
Wow 😂can deal with all those letters... I have add🤩 this player sounds amazing!!!
The Panasonic 820 is amazing. I especially love the 4k upscaling for standard DVDs.
I just upgraded to a Panasonic DP-UB820, so I'm working my way up to the premium ones!
Woooooot! 🎉
Believe me, for Bluray players and Turntable vinyl record players, there's a moot point beyond which you can't squeeze or get linear uphill progression in price to performance. If you're investing more than $300 on either of these tools/ instruments, your investment is going to fall into law of diminishing return.
Great review! I’m waiting to see your thoughts about JVC’s new MA series AVR’s! For us broke a$$ majority with 5.1’s and 7.1’s living room set ups

I live in an area where my Internet goes down a lot! But i got the Panasonic ub420 😭. One day ill get a premium blu ray player.
If you have a projector that's all you need.
If your display supports Dolby vision, the UB820 is all you need.
I have a Panny 420 too mate , it is me serving very very well so far. And it's upscaling capabilities are not mentioned nearly enough.
Yeah my G3 would support so 420 to a 820 recommended? @@jebo4jc

I have the brochure > 800 maybe.
Panasonic 420 with a 9000 remote atm. The Mag 900 costs the same as my LG G3 77" in Australia 🇦🇺
I've got the 800 almost a year old Glad to hear I'm not the only one with twister 4k issue I've got 2 copies bought the standard one when steelbook got delayed from Amazon but they played on my ps5 and my sons sony player so i gave him a copy couldn't get a answer from WB either about this issue
Apparently it is an issue with the disc itself. Panasonic players and others have also reported issues with the latest 4K Twister remaster. 🤷♂️
@@ealanosborne I have a Panny 420 and had no problems playing Twister at all.
This review comes just as I'm thinking about a new 4k player however you never mentioned if you would would be willing to part with your hard earned. As I'm not related to the Royal family I might have to give these a miss or wait until an entry level Magnetar is revealed.
Great video. Thank you for sharing this.
It is nice to see a DVD player that is well built and had some weight to it. Reminds me of the days when I had. Denon 5000 or Pioneer Elite DV-09. Those had some weight and were very well built.
That aside, I would have a tough time buying a disc player of any kind, at any price given this format has likely run its course.
I have had the Magnetar UDP800 for about 8 months now and am quite happy with it. I did however not think the UDP900 was worth it for me, I do not really listen to audio cd's. The issue with Twister movie also happened for me with the UDP800. It went to the movie menu and when I wanted to start the movie, the player stopped and returned to the main Magnatar home screen. It took a firmware update, which came out two days ago to fix it. I updated the player this morning and the issue with the Twister 4k movie was gone, I could finally watch the movie I bought a couple weeks ago. In the span of the 8 months I have had the player, I think there has been about 5 firmware updates. It is very sturdy build, is very quiet and I like the OSD menu's, I am glad I bought it.
Oh nice! Once I get the 800 hooked up in my dedicated theater, I’ll def update that firmware. 🎉
I upgraded form my Sony X800 to an X800M2 in anticipation of my new 65" LG G4, which I got a couple weeks ago. Sure beats my 50" side-lit QNED!!! Although having to move my dad into assisted living yesterday and now having to take over all the house bills, it may not have been the smartest financial decision.
Hang in there! You’ll figure it out! Everyone’s more resilient than they think in times like this. 👍🎉
Cant believe at those prices it isn't a universal player so I can play my other region discs. Hard pass for me
And it’s not too much to ask for either 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 😡
You can order it region free. It's an option.
@@GuapoteMel where can i get a region free panasonic 820?
@@chrisjfox8715 no idea, I was referring to the magnatar
What almost everybody overlooks with the Magnetar players is they can be bought in a region free version and the amount of players you can get region free is very limited less than a dozen so if you have a mix of regions you either have to have a player for each region or find a region free player and the Magnetar UDP-800 and 900 is the best option when it comes to that
So true! Thanks!
@@ealanosborne I bought a UDP800 to replace an Oppo BDP103D from 2014 and the region code change is so much better on the Magnetar, on the Oppo you had to press dimmer 3 times and then mute or pure audio and then the number you wanted to change to within 10 seconds of the player starting up and it never worked the first time vs the UDP800 where you press 8520 in the setup an overlay pops up where you change the region code and it works every time without having to turn the player off like the Oppo
Magnetar looks nice, but pricey for what I accomplish and need. I bought my Reavon X200 at launch with the expectations of what the Magentar offers and was before Magnetar existed. Since then I ended up with over 200TB connected to a Zidoo. I still use the Reavon for first watches and special features of my discs along with my Cd and SACD library. Re-watches and TV Disc rips are strictly Zidoo anymore for me.
I like the Panasonic 820 but went with the Sony 800M2 because the build quality was better. I may look at getting a Panasonic though.
If you own a projector the 820 is a must 👌
@@kman9387 yeah I may pick it up. I just don't like paying $500 for a plastic player. If it had the build quality of the Sony, I would have been bought it.

I feel ya!
But it truly is an awesome player. I got mine on Amazon for $419
Magnetar remind me of Oppo
And those of us that bought their expensive players are now stuck with no more firmware updates

Think before you pay this sort of money for a Blu-Ray player.
Once bitten twice shy comes to mind.
OPPO still has a service centre for fixing issues on the player and no firmware is required beyond the last one that is still available. Still plays everything including the latest disc I spin on it asides from HD-DVDs lol.
@@Tidbitkid The service centres in the EU / UK closed shortly after they pulled out of selling them.
There was a website directing you to the firmware but that has now gone.
My players are still working, i have some laser assemblies on hand for when the originals fail
but if other OEM parts fail i will be stuck with an expensive door stop.
@@Barbarapape and If you went with a Magnetar product where would that be located? The point is in comparison and known dedication even after leaving the market to still have a service centre afterall it was a made in China designed in California brand of OPPO. I'm in Canada and they still have it in United States still requires shipping to another country expensive but good to know they still have a service center. The only thing we had in Canada was an authorized dealer which never fixed the players only sold them. By the 20x series they were from one dealer in the US from an authorized dealer who had both US and Canada authorized to sell to. This product also looks like many products like Reavon players setup shop pay/give influencers the product sell out and close up shop after last warranty. There have been many OPPO clones since they departed from the market with every single one of them closing up shop after selling out or discounting 4K players from the lineup. All while you can still contact the service centre at OPPO and find some one who will pickup and reply. Thus buy a used OPPO service it and still come out top of these prices or go with Panasonic who never left the market and is still widely available.
@@Barbarapape The website still exist for OPPO digital and has all the firmware available to download
My sony ubp-x700 still working fine since 2018
I have a Panny 820. I love it but honestly, I couldn't tell any difference when I "upgraded" from a Sony 4k player.
I have both players, the Sony has a habit of freezing on some 4K disc's such as Batman and 1917, I purchased the Panasonic, no problems with freezing.
I purchased the Sony UBP-X800 back when it was first released in 2017. It has worked well for me ever since and I have a sizable physical library. I still think it performs well but maybe I am wrong. I have to be honest with all my tech research Blu-ray players are something I don't actively research. Is there anything in the same price range that is better? If so what am I missing out on as far as features. Anyone feel free to enlighten me.
I guess the only thing currently that could one-up a premium 4K player is the new Kaleidescape Stratos V, since you’re basically getting the uncompressed master file, not a disc. But even that is $4,000. 😳 Once it comes down to $2,000, Kaleidescape will be a true contender, IMO.
@@ealanosborne Panasonic and a used OPPO have at least been on the market for more then a year and are high-end players with the OPPO able to do everything this player can do with legendary status and build.
This Player, using Transformer as Power Supply (Said Caleb Dennison from "digital trends"). Perhaps this guy have better reliability, just like my Basic Active Speaker which using Transformer and still going strong until today 😅
Yeah, man!
You could have equally made this video in favour of low cost Bluray players bringing more value for money.
1. Is the picture from UDP900 900 times better than LG or Panasonic or Sony Bluray players priced below $500, even $200?
2. If I have a large collection of physical Bluray media, a mix of A, B and C grade movies and 70%-30% ratio of Bluray- 4K UHD media, It'd make more sense to future proof myself by buying 6-7 units of 200$ multi region Bluray players and 2-3 4K Bluray players than just 1 unit of versatile high build quality 4K Bluray player worth $2K or $3K if failed due to any technical reason, I have lot of dependency there it being' single point of failure'. Low cost Bluray players are perishing fast from the market and soon they will become antique, rarely available and thus exorbitantly priced (allready happening that trend).
If someone is investing on thousands of physical disc media, they better also insure their Bluray players to serve them for next 40-50 years 😉
How does the magnetar experience compare to the kaleidoscope experience compare????????????
Wish I knew, too!!!!!!! 😭
Kaleidoscope does Uncompressed Video
Magnetar has Compressed Video on a Disc so Kaleidoscope would give better picture
@@Music.Movies.67also have emptier pockets and movies on a hard drive that are encrypted and on a closed network system vs a physical disc that can be played on any compatible player. Also no Dolby Vision support on a Kaleidoscape

I rip my films and play them with plex vis Shield. This seems insanely expensive.
Sadly my LG 4K started to freeze on every disk. Purchased a UB820, and it’s doing a much better job.
Just how it goes, unfortunately. Nice upgrade, though!
What strikes me as the most comical is how the majority of the comments didn't listen at all. They moronically post about how they would never pay 3k for 4k player and would buy Kaleidescape. Good luck with Kaleidescape when it comes to storage , as none who posted that can afford it, but note importantly, this product is WAY WAY WAY more than a 4K disc player, and most of these clowns don't get it. It also speaks to Magnetars recent shift into calling it a Universal media player Vs calling it a bluray player . Seems they learn. Try that with Panny.
Nah man more then a couple hundred for a play is absolutely ridiculous
Ealan- How do you feel about Chi-fi?
I’ve accepted the fact that all companies - even if they claim “made in America” - have at least some percentage of internal components made in China. It’s just how it goes. But regardless, I still don’t like ultra cheap products, no matter where they’re being manufactured. 🤷♂️
With about 950 DVDs and blue rays. Stream ing you just keep on paying nothing is yours😢
How would you compare this to the Oppo (only available used now) and the Panasaonic UDP 9000?
I haven’t had the privilege of owning or reviewing either of those classic players, but I’ve been told by my Magnetar rep that they purposely built their players with similar topology as the Oppo, since they knew they were no longer being built. 🤷♂️
