      I fly strictly electric. I don't fly nitro, gas, turbine or anything with internal combustion or anything that requires liquid fuel. I cannot comment on anything besides electric.

      Hello Gary. Thank you for your support.
      I fly 3D helicopters exclusively, so I always use heading hold. I believe the scale helicopter pilots like using rate mode for a more "scale look", but I admit that's about the extent of my scale helicopter understanding. It is my understanding some folks like adjusting the tail rod length using "rate mode" for mechanical setup purposes, under the belief mechanical adjustment under "rate mode" will make the tail hold better when using "heading hold". This theory has been debunked by the FBL unit developers (Tomas from Spirit, the MIkado developers, the MSH Brain2/iKON2 developers, etc.), but misinformation continues.
      From a pure academic standpoint, yes it is possible to flip between "heading hold" and "rate mode" using a switch. You would need to use "Free Mixes". This is found under "Main Menu" >> "Fine Tuning" >> "Free Mixes". You have to create 2 free mixes. I confess I don't fully understand why this works, but it does. You need to set up the 2 mixes equally. From Gyro sens. To Gyro sens. Set Master Value to "-100%" on both mixes. Set up the same activation switch and in same activation mode for both mixes. I don't have a video for this setup, but you can refer to this troubleshooting video. ua-cam.com/video/b9JogeAUrP0/v-deo.html
      If you plan to use this method, make sure to assign Rescue/Stabilisation to a separate channel along with a separate switch.

    Hello John,
    New Jeti guy here (but older in age). Thanks for the excellent videos. Obviously, you have quite a bit of time in front of the Jeti transmitter. When you refer to “bank one, two ...., are those your flight modes?
    Or am I misunderstanding. I look forward to more videos.
    I have a Mikado Logo 480 in build for next season. Hobby wing 120 ESC. Any particular reason you like the Spirit FBL controller over others? (Brain for example)
    Thanks again

      Thank you for you comments. I will attempt to address your questions. A little bit about my hobby experience. I've been in the RC hobby since early 2011. My experience in this RC hobby is limited to helicopters; I don't fly anything else (no airplanes, jets, gliders, multi-rotors, etc.). I started out with flybar helicopters, but I converted to fully flybarless by the end of 2012. I started out with Spektrum radios (DX8, DX18, DX9, etc), transitioned to Jeti (DS-14, DS-16, DS-24) around 2015, and transitioned fully to Mikado Vbar Control Touch radio with VBar Neos at the end of 2018 and that's the system I've been flying exclusively for the past 4 years until now that I am trying Jeti (DS-12) and Spirit (GTR units) again. I've owned and flown Skookum's (SK-720 and SK-720BE), BeastX (AR7200BX and AR7210BX), VBar (Silverline and now Neo VLinks), Brain2 (same as iKon2), Spirit (Spirit Pro's and now Spirit GTR's). I am now also a pilot on the Amain Flight Team.
      About "Banks", I don't know the official definition, but I will attempt to convey what "Banks" do. Back in the flybar days, "Flight Modes" was a good way to organize flight settings. "Flight Modes" defined the throttle curves and pitch curves, but they still allowed you to mix and match Flight Modes with other parameters like tail gains, Expo, Dual Rates, etc. Now with flybarless units, Banks are the upper echelon of organization. Although it is still possible to have have more than one "Flight Mode", "Expo", "Gains", etc. assigned to a given "Bank", it may be best for simplicity to assign just one "Flight Mode", "Expo", "Gain", etc to any given "Bank". This is not only true for Spirit FBL units, but this also applies to virtually all other flybarless units (Spirit, Neo, iKon2/Brain2, Axon, etc) in the market. The Mikado/Neo system makes it easier to setup as it only allows for one parameter value per Bank. For Jeti (and most other radios) the way to get around this is to assign multiple functions to a single 3-way switch. In my case with the Jeti DS-12 radio, I assigned Banks, as well as Flight Modes and Tail Gains to the same 3-way switch. I hope this clears up the difference between Banks and Flight Modes.
      Choice of FBL. I've used Skookum, Brain2/iKon2, VBar, BeastX, and Spirit. They all have their strengths. Spirit has been excellent from the start. All Spirit units are well constructed with CNC aluminum outer shell, tight fitting PBC board (yes, I've disassembled the units), and top electronic components with fast processors and top quality gyro/accelerometers. The computer software works well with multiple operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux, Raspberry Pi, Android), the firmware integrates with multiple radio systems (Spektrum, Jeti, OpenTX, Graupner, Ethos), and Spirit is able to read, interpret, and output telemetry data from multiple ESC brands. Spirit has the most options for self-level/rescue, and the GT units even have pressure sensors for determining altitude. Flight performance is as good as the other units I've used. For smaller helicopters, Spirit offers anti-gravity/lightness feature similar to Neo. Spirit has offered 760us option for cyclic servos for quite a while. With the RS and GTR units, one can now have both FBL and receiver with the footprint of one single unit similar in design concept to Neo VLink and Futaba CGY-760R units. And, of course, the cost of each Spirit unit make Spirit amongst the best overall value FBL units in the current market.
      Using Brain2/iKon2 as an example, Brain2/iKon2 units have one main feature that I prefer over Spirit. When it comes to firmware integration with Jeti radios, the display interface of Brain2/iKon2 is superior to Spirit. The Spirit display interface is comparatively clunky and only lets one visualize the parameter values of one bank at a time, so no option to compare bank values in one single view. In contrast, the Brain2/iKon2 display interface allows one to visualize the parameter values of all 3 banks side-by-side similarly to the widely successful Neo/VBC Touch system. I approached Spirit about this concern about 7 years ago, but NOTHING has changed after all these years, so it is what it is. Both Brain2/iKon2 and Spirit perform very well (no different than Neo after appropriate tuning), so I cannot say one performs superior to the other, at least not on the electric helis I've compared them. Brain2/iKon2 do not have integrated receiver option, so one will always need a separate receiver (at least currently); this is not an issue for most people, but for me who got used to the all-in-one Neo VLink unit, I much prefer the small footprint of the integrated FBL/Rx design like the Spirit GTR.

      Wow! And thank you.
      I have much to learn about the entire system and the integration of all the components.
      I have flown airplanes back in the 90’s with an Ace single stick transmitter.
      In the last 8 or so years prior to my retirement I fabricated my own single stick transmitter. (Everything but the RF deck, used a Spektrum module)
      My goal was to fly helicopters with this box. Met up with a lot of resistance at my local club.
      I have to agree, that unless you have a solid ‘computer” radio system (that is easily programmable) you cannot train well. So I had a paradigm shift and bought the DS-24.
      In a quick search of the Spirit GTR on the RCU forum, it was interesting to find out that the Spirit was developed in line with Jeti. (Has their receiver in it)
      Thanks so much for sharing!
      I’ll have to look for you on the forums.
      I remember my first time at IRCHA and meeting Curtis Youngblood. I still have the shirt (and the Rave FSO)

      @@airfoilsinmotion4777 It is fascinating that you have such fun toys with such history!!
      I never ran into a single issue with any of the Spektrum radios I owned. I even argue that the overall ergonomics of the Spektrum radios I've held in my hands feel better than the radios I currently own. The only reason I transitioned out of Spektrum is for the bells and whistles other radios have not yet offered by Spektrum.
      I owned a Jeti DS-24 radio. I purchased it from Europe in Jan 2018 because the FCC approval here in the US was taking a bit too long for me. I enjoyed it with Brain2 and Spirit Pro units until I sold it in Nov 2018. I anticipate you will love it!!

    Hello I just picked one up today thanks for the video. I was told the receiver in the unit would work with a multi radio on spectrum. Would you know if that’s so ? I ask because I can’t seem to get it to bind. I’m using a Radiomaster TX16 MK ll. Thanks

    • @johnahamelv
      @johnahamelv  10 місяців тому +2

      As I best understand it, both the Spirit RS and Spirit GTR unit can only bind to Jeti radios. Neither one of these two units (Spirit RS and GTR) can be connected to an external receiver to bind to a different radio either. If you purchased a Spirit GTR unit (as featured in this video), it will only bind to a Jeti radio. It will not bind to a RadioMaster radio.

    Hello John,
    Thanks for the great video and setup procedure. Quick question regarding the servo travels. I have noticed that when i am on the Setup Mode, the software shows the Pitch channel as -100 to 100 which is correct. However, if i switch to any Bank, the Pitch shows different values (-90 to 87). Does this look normal to you? Any help is kindly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    • @johnahamelv
      @johnahamelv  10 місяців тому

      If I understand your issue correctly, you calibrated the pitch (channel 6 on the Spirit "General > Channels > Receiver Channel Mapping" desktop software, 3rd variable on the Spirit "Diagnostic > Input Channel" in desktop software, and item #4 in the Jeti radio "Servo Setup"), so that Pitch on the Spirit "Diagnostic > Input Channels" is reading 100% at high stick, 0% at mid stick, and -100% at low stick. However, when you switch banks, the you are getting different percent numbers. The next thing to check here is your pitch curves for all 3 banks in your radio AND the "Pitch range" (Limits > Collective pitch > Pitch range) for all 3 banks in the Spirit software.

    • @taller51169
      @taller51169 10 місяців тому

      Hi again. I think the issue is that i have calibrated the pitch channel with the setup mode (default) on the transmitter selected. In the setup mode we have switched the pitch curve to a "7 point" one instead of a "constant" line. In that sense, the calibration with the setup mode on produces different results than when calibrating with any of the banks. Anyway, i have switched the pitch curve to constant on the setup mode and recalibrate. Everything seems consistant now. Thanks for the kind help.@@johnahamelv

    Hello and thank you for your videos. Did you ever had the case, that Gyro on PC is at around 47 and cant reach 100 in any way. I use a DS 14, can not calibrate on endpoint +100 -100

    • @johnahamelv
      @johnahamelv  Рік тому

      If I understand correctly, you are having trouble calibrating the Gyro channel. If that’s the case, there is a step(s) we are missing. Whatever Gyro Gain % number you dial on the radio should yield the same number in the Spirit PC program.

    • @n8schatten01
      @n8schatten01 Рік тому

      Hello and thank you, yes i can't calibrate the gyro channel up to +-100 like you did in the video. You reach 100 at 114%, i think. The highest i can get is around 65-67 with 150% on max, if i remember correct. I just set the gain in the Spirit unit directly now. Don't know what i did wrong.

    • @johnahamelv
      @johnahamelv  Рік тому

      @@n8schatten01 There must be something we are missing not allowing to calibrate the Spirit Gyro channel to give you the same percent reading as the Jeti % reading. We could set up a video conference if you want.
      Your “alternative” method of adjusting the tail gyro gain directly via the Spirit firmware will work just as well as far as performance, but it will take several more steps to get to the Spirit gyro gain menu along with needing to “save” the gyro gain adjustments compared to the fewer steps needed to accomplish the same task using the Jeti radio Gyro gain menu.
