I have listened to this song countless times. And I am in tears now listening to the sheer brilliance of her voice. Just think about the monumental achievement of Barbra’s Yentl. She directed, wrote, produced starred in, sang all the songs during a time where no women directed movies in Hollywood, and it was her directorial debut and it was the first Hollywood movie made behind the communist iron curtain. It won the golden globe for best musical/comedy picture and she became the first woman to win the golden globe for best director. And to show how much a hurdle it was to make the movie during that era, this masterpiece was snubbed at the Oscar’s in categories she was eligible for. And no, your daughter is not too young for the movie.

So happy you finally listened to this!!! Barbra is the GOAT!!!!! Yentl is truly some of her best work! Please listen to the entire soundtrack and/or watch the movie. You will be blown away! I agree with listening to the soundtrack version before going to the Yentl medley from the concerts. You’ll be blown away again when you hear the medley. I highly suggest watching the medley from The Concert from 1994. Have a great day!!!!

I'll make this simple - For me - this is Barbara at her absolute peak, which makes this song the peak of recorded female singing of all time as far as I'm concerned. Very few might rival, but none has ever surpassed this as far as I'm concerned.

She is definitely one if a kind. Yentl is one of my favorite movies; i saw it in the theater when it was first released and immediately purchased the soundtrack, and almost wore it out playing it. May i say, ANYTHING you listen to by Barbra will amaze you. There has never been, nor will ever, be anyone better!

The Sound Quality is best from the Film. I wore out several copies of this on vinyl back in 1983-84, it was one of the first CD's available, when CD's were brand new in 1983...There is a vid of this song from The Film on UA-cam.
But your best bet is watching the entire film. It is not a musical comedy, It is a drama with music.
I'll never forget watching Entertainment Tonight, on broadcast TV back in 1983 they did a 10 minute segment at the premiere of Yentl at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood. They interviewed Spielberg, and Gregory Peck.
The Theatre was the Coronet Theatre in San Francisco that I saw this movie when it premiered is no longer standing, was bulldozed. This film is one of Barbra's Best accomplishments, IMO.

One of my favorite Barbra Streisand movies!
    Yentl › Film synopsis
Rebbe Mendel is a single father who teaches the Talmud, a sacred text of Judaism, to the boys of his small Polish town. Behind closed doors, he also instructs his daughter, Yentl, despite the fact that girls are forbidden to study religious scripture. When Yentl's father dies, she still has a strong desire to learn about her faith -- so she disguises herself as a male, enrolls in a religious school, and unexpectedly finds love along the way.

A must watch is Barbra Streisand’s A HAPPENING IN CENTRAL PARK from 1967. You’re the type of listener that would really appreciate it. She does a whole act live before a gigantic outdoor audience and she looks gorgeous. The special runs the gamut of her vocal repertoire and it also showcases her comedic talent right before she became a megastar. To me, she is the absolute GOAT at singing the popular standards from the stage and movies. It’s Barbra at her best. I know she’s been successful with pop rock hits, but I’ve never thought that genre shows off her vast talent.

Yentl is rated PG. A kid's questions would most likely be about gender roles. It has a message about equality of the sexes, and that's different than saying men and women are the same. It celebrates the differences, but doesn't settle for those differences being accepted without question. The 'divine adrodgeny of the soul' as Barbra said (when she was quoting someone else...).

Just hearing the first few bars, the first phrase, brought tears to my eyes. It’s such a gorgeous song with an equally beautiful sentiment.
As others have said, I think you’d enjoy the movie, but not knowing any eight year olds, I can’t judge whether it’s suitable for your child & you should watch it yourself first. However, I think it’s pretty clean measured against a lot of today’s movies. 🤷‍♀️
However, I did want to mention that at the very beginning of the song when she interjects “Papa can you see me”, that is the name of one of the first songs in the movie and it’s also a stunner. 👍👍

Hi Saeed, thank you for reacting to this song. I knew you'd like it. The look on your face while she was holding that last note was priceless 😀.
Yentl is a very great movie, but I think it might be too adult for a child under 12 to comprehend. As the story goes on towards the end it shows more adult themes of life. So, in my humble opinion it's better understood at a later age. But Barbra sings wonderfully in it so there's still that to enjoy. This song is actually already a medley of the songs she sings in the movie. The Yentl medley Live 1994 basically is an extended version where she sings longer versions of the songs and then ends it with a duet with herself. The Yentl medley 2000 Live is a duet with a young actress/singer who represent young Barbra. This was performed at her Timeless concert on 31 dec 1999.

  • @lamusiclover2264

There is a film clip of her singing this from the movie. She incorporates parts of "Papa Can You Hear Me" into this song. You should listen to that and you'll understand how she combines the lyrics into this song.. The movie isn't too adult, it's PG, but it may be hard for your daughter to understand the story, because since she is not allowed to study the Talmud as a woman, she disguises herself as a male student, and a woman falls in love with her thinking she is male. (which is really impossible to believe for real, but it doesn't matter, it's a wonderful story, and this situation was true for Orthodox Jewish women at the time.

I came across a video of her recording “Make our garden grow” and it’s somewhat of a rough video, but she holds this note at the end that you would never think is possible and at the end it seems like she cuts the note off herself like she could’ve kept going. Saeed, you have to check it out. Insane vocals this woman has.

Goosebumps EVERY time I listen to this!! I love your astonishment and how wide your eyes went at the end! The medley may refer to her concert where she duets with herself, or it may be from the Timeless concert where she duets with herself and her "younger self". This is an amazing movie about culture, religion, acceptance and courage to be yourself. Barbra was panned a bit by critics but I adore every moment of this movie and the score (all sung by Barbra) is exquisite and moving. "A Piece of Sky" is truly an amazing vehicle to showcase her vocal prowess and great musicality. I remember the final scene of the movie and her performance on the ship headed for " the new world" moves me to tears even to this day. It may get lost on a child of 8. As it probably is a bit mature for a kid. I imagine children would find this movie boring.

Definitely see this movie. Not sure if it’s appropriate for an eight year old. Certainly in my day, some 50+ years ago, not appropriate for an eight year old. But kids are way more sophisticated these days. This was the last song/meshed with another from the movie. So possibly that is what they mean. I saw Barbra in concert and she sang this song with the movie scene behind her. This song closed out the first half of her concert. Needless to say, it ended in a standing ovation…..and a few tears.

An interviewer once asked Barbra..."How do you hold notes for so long?" Her reply, "Because I want to." She manifests things purely by will... that's probably her single greatest quality and key to her success and longevity.
As everyone has said, it's a must see movie. It takes place at the turn of the 20th Century, in 1904 in Eastern Europe. Yentl very much wants to learn the teachings of the Talmud, and after her father dies, she goes out into the world to learn at a Yeshiva...only masquerading as a boy, Anshel... and studies with another boy (Mandy Patinkin) who she winds up falling in love with. As far as your daughter is concerned... you know her better than anyone. My suggestion would be to watch the movie yourself first, and if you feel she's ready for some of the content (btw, there is no nudity except for a rear shot of Patinkin walking into a lake to go skinny-dipping), then you decide. Eight-year olds today are like 14-year olds, compared to back in my day. The movie has such great messages, enjoy!

Have you read/listened to her memoir? She has immense discipline and an indomitable will, but even with all that, there were several projects that she LONGED to do that she simply could not bring together. I almost feel cheated She could have done even more if the wind had been at her back.

@helenespaulding7562 I sure did, all glorious 48+ hours. Before I started it, I thought, "Oy, this is sooo long," but nearing the final chapter, I was sad it was ending soon and wanted more." I too feel a bit "cheated" that we didn't get to experience more of her great work in other projects. I know losing "The Normal Heart" must have taken a chunk out of her. There were some projects that eluded her, but there were others that she just didn't pursue and, maybe in hindsight, wished she had. But she knows herself, and even describes herself as being "... simple, complex, generous, selfish, unattractive, beautiful, lazy, and driven."

Every song on the Yentl soundtrack is gorgeous, although A Piece of Sky is the standout track. If you have to react to another song(s) here, check out Where Is It Written, This Is One Of The Moments, and The Way He Makes Me Feel. You won't regret it.

Wow! How about that, Saeed! Ha! You're finally in the "A Piece of Sky" fan club! I wish I could post pics here on UA-cam. That look on your face immediately after the song ends is like the look on kids' faces on Christmas morning, when they first come in the room and see the Christmas tree with all their presents under it! Lol!
That song ends the movie. And what an ending it is! If you don't mind being spoiled a bit, you can find the ending of the film with this song here on UA-cam. With the visuals Streisand created, it makes it 100 times better than just the audio, if you can imagine!
Here's the list of songs used in The Yentl Medley from the actual CD, Barbra: The Concert 1994 (at Madison Square Garden, NYC - the one I saw) and Video/DVD (at Arrowhead Pond,
    Anaheim, CA):
    1) Where Is It Written (a portion of)
    2) Papa, Can You Hear Me (complete)
    3) Will Someone Ever Look At Me That Way? (a portion of)
    4) A Piece Of Sky (last portion and a very special rendition)
Best quality of it on UA-cam - ua-cam.com/video/1scD4H03Y08/v-deo.html (You can bump it up to 4K!)
Thanks again, Saeed! Always a pleasure watching and hearing your take on Streisand's songs. Being a writer, you really get into the words. How you interpret is a gift.

I would watch it first before you show it to your daughter. You'll be able to better assess her ability to understand what's happening and whether or not it will be beneficial to her at her age. Definitely by the time she's 11 or 12 should be able to grasp the plot better.

    • @emmavink
      @emmavink 2 місяці тому +1

Good advise. I would also say that she doesn't necessarily need to "get it" at her age.
And any of the themes that are more adult are going to fly over her head anyway.
I was easily only 5 or 6 when I started watching The Sound Of Music and my parents definitely started taking me to Shakespeare productions between 8-10 and I definitely didn't really understand what was going on until much later.
But the exposure to the music and the words was so beneficial as a young child. Especially in terms of inspiring the imagination.

I didn’t know this song, although I remember seeing the movie when it came out in 1983. I think you should wait to watch it with your daughter, because I believe it’s rated R for some sexual content. This is a beautiful song, sung so magnificently by Barbara Streisand!
There’s a completely different kind of movie (about a serial killer) that I went to see when it came out in 1978, called Eyes of Laura Mars, in which Barbara Streisand sings the theme song Prisoner. Beautiful and haunting!
Thank you again, Saeed, for another wonderful reaction. I always enjoy them.🥰💗

A fair quality UA-cam video clip of the scene from the movie Yentl where Barbra sings A Piece of Sky is here ua-cam.com/video/kT7R-QCrhtg/v-deo.html
A very good quality UA-cam video clip of Barbra singing A Piece of Sky over a montage of scenes from Yentl is here ua-cam.com/video/iHMJX1J1MNI/v-deo.html
''Yentl'' is rated PG (''Parental Guidance Suggested''). It contains some suggested nudity and sexual references.
    According to IMDb Content Rating:
    Sex & Nudity: Mild
    Violence & Gore: None
    Profanity: None
    Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking: None
    Frightening & Intense Scenes: None
What Parents Need to Know from Common Sense Media:
Parents need to know that because the basic plot involves a teen girl disguised as a young man, there are numerous scenes that place Yentl in embarrassing and uncomfortable situations, some of them with sexual overtones (i.e., Yentl being in the presence of several young men as they strip and jump naked into a pond). Though there is no actual sexual activity, the "marriage" ceremony performed between Yentl and another young woman is taken seriously by the "bride" and she attempts to make love to her husband, unaware that it is Yentl, a girl. These scenes are presented in a gentle way and do not emphasize sexuality. There is occasional wine drinking both in social situations and for religious ceremonial purposes.
