  • This is just a quick video I made at 2am to show some of the parts of the Betamax mechanism as well as some cleaning techniques. This covers the SL-5000 front loading series machines but many of the tips can be applied to the later Betamax models.
    Clean at your own risk! I’m not responsible if you mess up your machine. I’ve been fixing these as a hobby for many years and this is simply my way of doing it.
    Enjoy!

    I have a 5800 that I purchased new many years ago. Pulled it out of storage wanting to transfer some tapes to digital. Watching your videos, the deck appears to be threading properly, and FF/REW also work. However, when I press play I can see the cassette supply reel start to move, but then the unit stops.Any suggestions?

    I was wondering if I can tap into your abundant knowledge! I ran into your video because I got a Sony Betamax SL-HF2000 from eBay, and I’m running into some issues. Commercial tapes play well, but my old home made tapes don’t. I only have two, one plays sound, but with a black screen. The other one plays mute and black screen. Are you familiar with this model? Is there a forum where I could ask more in-depth questions? I found it odd that the home made tapes don’t work, but someone on eBay said that this could due to the auto tracking feature in this model, but likely also a mechanical or electronic issue. It could also be that my tapes just went bad. I jus got a replacement remote for it, because that is the only way to turn the auto-tracking off. By the way, I used to repair TVs in the 90s, so I’m somehow familiar with the lingo.

    Thanks for the this video. Very helpful. I have this same model. I pulled it out of storage because I want to transfer some old home beta footage to a digital format. I am having some trouble getting it to work. I hope you can give me some advice. The tape goes in ok and drops down onto the supply and take-up spindles but won't wind around the threading ring. The two drive belts that control the loading were broken so I replaced them, but the tape still won't thread even if I give it a little encouragement as you did on your machine at the beginning of this video. Any suggestion will be appreciated. Thanks, Jim

      What model is it exactly?

      @@Tapes1982 Thanks for your reply. It's a Sony Betamax: "Video Cassette Recorder SL-5000". It has a label on the front that says "Simulated Wood Cabinet".

      Jim Denny gotcha. If the cassette is taken in and sits properly down onto the spindles then yes, the threading motor should take over at the rear right and run the tape around the drum. If you don’t hear the threading motor back there whirring or trying to begin the threading process, I’d start by checking for a drive voltage at the threading motor. If it’s not there I’d begin investigating the “cassette down” detection switch for continuity. I have the books but I’m not near them for the next few days.
      Replacement belts aren’t too tight are they?

      @@Tapes1982 Thanks. I'll check these two possibilities. I don't think the belts are too tight .....

      Jim Denny ok. From memory on these front loaders, if the tape is inserted but doesn’t thread around the drum, it’ll sit there a few seconds and then eject the tape when it doesn’t sense a loading AND threading completion. Does it behave that way?

    Is its tape transport mechanism and belts, same as sl-5800 ?( If I want to use one of these as part donor.)

    • @Tapes1982
      @Tapes1982  3 роки тому

      There are some differences as the 5800 is a top loading machine but you may find some similar parts.

    I only get a picture when paused or rewinding. I know this is usually due to a dirty head. I cleaned using your method but still not getting any picture. Is there anything else I can try?

      Sounds as though it may have servo issues as is common on these front loading 5000s. It’s unable to lock up in sync with the tape. Would need someone with in depth experience to troubleshoot unfortunately.
