Great video, was a big help. You now have a new subscriber! Looking forward others fixes you offer. I like your straight forward approach Tom.
Thank you Tom for the kind words. I’m glad to help
Thank you so much for this. I was afraid my old VCR had kicked the bucket. But the audio still worked fine, just no picture. After cleaning the head, it's working perfectly again 🙏
Glad it helped
Had a VCR that was acting very wonky when playing. Cleaned it like you said in this video, now I have no issues. Thank you for this video.
Glad it helped
I've been professionally repairing electronics for 35 years. I approve this method. I personally do it a little different. But, for a novice. Definitely recommend! Also, make sure it's dry! Or it will wrap around the whole head assembly, and make a big mess, lol. Great job sir, well done!
Thank you very much! Super helpful. Your method worked great.

I just tried this today and it worked. Thank you very much.
I’m glad it worked, thank you for watching and subscribing
Cool video I have a bunch of VCRs I fix all sorts of stuff but never a VCR pretty simple now that I know the components thanx I will be cleaning all 20 of my VCRs 😂
Thank you sir for posting this, you saved the day. I just found the only known live footage of my aunt while died suddenly at 44 years old of a blood clot. Her other footage got destroyed in a flood:/
You are welcome. I’m sorry for your loss
Digitize the footage and upload on UA-cam as private video so it is backupd
Good vid thanks would something like screen cleaner be OK to use for cleaning? Thanks!!
No deff not. You can even use rubbing alcohol but definitely not screen cleaner. Also please don’t forget to subscribe
This worked! Thank you :)
Hi there, great video, I will get hold of those swabs for sure. The VCR I just bought has an extremely fine grain which is minimized with tracking and bright/contrast adjustment but always noticeable. I have never watched a VHS tape on a flatscreen TV, only back in the day on CRT TVs, so is there always an inherent fuzz, or is my VCR probably at the lower end? ...FYI I tried the paper method and it also didn't fix the issue.
Apparently every vcr should be on the same level of output performance
Just found your video this helps me out so much thank you.
I bought a 1999 Panasonic 13inch vhs/tv combo and it is rewinding very slowly and audio seems low so I will try this out to see if it helps.
Glad it helped
Thanks for tip about just using the swaps. I’ve used paper 3 different times and it was a pain and not as effective in my experience. I used a random cotton swap and it got so much off!
You are so welcome!
Thank you for tutorial. I'd also recommend not touching pinch rollers and cleaning pads with your fingers.
Good video; just used it to clean a Toshiba model very close to the one shown here.
I’m glad it worked
I have video on the DVD but not on VCR, audio works, and I cleaned as u prescribed
Make sure you’re on the VCR mode
Thank you!
hi, that was a great video! Would you happen to another showing how to clean the heads on a 8mm cassette camera? not really sure what to take off to get to the heads. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks Mike G
I don’t have one currently, but when I do have one, I will make a video. Thank you for your question. They also make an 8 mm wet head cleaner, possibly available
Thank You!
Thank you for a very informative video. I noticed you didn't clean the rollers or capstans. Is that something I should do while cleaning the video and audio heads?
If you want to, you can sometimes they could be fragile just go easy on them
back in the day i used curency note for cleaning, sony vcr.
Do you have a video that show how to clean moldy tapes? I have an older Panasonic that when you remove the cover it disables the new/ff/stop/play button. Any way to override that?
I am not aware of any way to clean mold off video tapes.
I had to clean the cylindrical base that the head sits on too. On the first pass I just cleaned the rotating head and that actually somehow made the picture worse. When I put a tape in I noticed that it wrapped around the stationary base that the head spins on ,and after I cleaned that the picture was great. Maybe I just needed two passes or maybe dust was being transferred from the base to the head. My vcr was pretty dirty.
Thank you DO MUCH for this! You are the most informative teacher that I could find on this subject. Plus, I have that same machine im trying to clean.
Is there at all any reason to use the cans of air?
Also, haven't checked your full channel yet, but do you have a tutorial on the DVD side as well??
Thank you so much! This was my father's and ive been dying to resurrect it and watch some of his old VHS tapes!
Also, any tips for cleaning the VHS tapes themselves??
Youre the best!
Thank you for watching my video, you can use the compressed air to clean out any dust before start cleaning the heads.
On the DVD side, there’s not much you can do just use the compressed air to blow out under the laser area of the DVD player also before you start cleaning the VCR heads.
On the tapes them self there is no way to clean them. the tape will deteriorate over time so my suggestion is to have them transferred to DVD.
Hope this helps.
@@YourReviewChannel Majorly! Super appreciate you!!!!
I’ve put a slightly moldy vhs into mine, and it cleaned it.
If I clean my vcr, will the mold disappear or will it continue to spread?
I used a micro fiber and alcohol. I may have over done it. Now the pic is worse. Are these heads very sensitive? If you clean them too much/to hard do they start to grab the tape more?
Thanks for this tutorial! When would you advise to clean the VCR heads? I recently bought a second-hand VCR and the seller mentioned the heads were never cleaned, since the VCR was barely used. I tried watching a tape and the image looks good, from what I can tell. So now I'm not sure whether cleaning my VCR heads will actually improve the image. Don't want to unnecessarily maybe damage the VCR heads. Hope you have some insights about this!
Yes great question, when the pitcher looks snowy it time to clean the heads. If it looks good leave it alone
@@YourReviewChannel Thanks for your fast response! Will leave the VCR heads alone for now.

Thanks for the sub!
Hello, thanks for this video. Real proud of myself, opened, cleaned, and removed a disintegrated ‘ head cleaner’. The player worked after several years of storage but after playing a few tapes it started to eat the tapes. I looked up cleaning, and used lint free paper cloth and alcohol. Afterward it now accepts and moves the tape, but it goes real slowly and doesn't have any sound or picture. Any ideas? What did I do wrong?
Sometimes the gears get gummed up with old grease it needs a good cleaning inside this machine, also don't use a lint-free cloth it could damage the video heads you need proper head cleaning pads. Hope this helps
@@YourReviewChannel It’s working... thx for the help!
You have been so helpful & I seem to find every possible ERROR so... it was working so I finally put in one of my precious 30 yr old VHS-C tapes. I saw our kids, and our grandson. When I put in the next tape, the sound worked but the screen displayed gray fuzz, then a graphic image of a rainbow and the word ‘image’. I tried different tapes and all the same. So it’s a hardware issue, I don’t know how to correct this. Uhhhhhh....?
you should also change the belt, they only last for 10 years or less and then to lose their form
Do you have any tip for a newbie with a VCR that is wrinkling both edges of the tape, but maintaining the center of the tape intact? Someone directed me that it could be the spindler, which i assume is another name for the drum head?
It’s probably the pinching wheel needs to be freed up
had to check twice if i hadn't put the video on 1.25
great video though, really appreciated
No worries!
Thank you
You're welcome
VCR'S vhs movies plus cleaning tapes and vcr belts are online now days
I put a moldy tape in thinking it was just fuzz or dust so thank you for the help.
You are welcome
@@YourReviewChannel Is it safe to use the VCR after cleaning it with this method? I heard that mold can spread throughout the VCR because the tape heads spin and spread mold?
@@michaelarojas No that not true.
@@YourReviewChannel Would a tape head cleaner be enough to get rid of mold or do the heads need to be wiped down? Thanks for the help this is my first time cleaning my VCR and it looks dirty!
If you’ve placed a moldy VCR tape into a VHS player, I would dispose of the entire unit. You risk exposing other tapes to mold and even your own room.
I run a analog to digital business and saw many moldy tapes that I turned down immediately. Not worth ruining my equipment and my studio.
Very informative. Much Blessings to you. Thanks for sharing, Lord-Jesus-Christ dot
Thank u
Thanks for the video! Quick question(s)… We have an old VCR and it plays some tapes great with no problems BUT other tapes the picture gets all snowy and then the audio goes out. (They are all old home videos from when we were kids in the 90’s).
Do you have any idea why the VCR would work for some tapes and not for others? Would cleaning the head help the problem?
Unfortunately videotapes do disintegrate overtime this is why you’re noticing some work while and some do not.
You can try cleaning the heads that might help but my suggestion is to have them transferred to DVD as soon as possible if you can if you want to save them
@@YourReviewChannel Yeah that’s what I was afraid of that it was the tapes and not the VCR. We will still
try cleaning the head and hopefully it helps. Yes I agree, we are in the process of converting them to digital right now and unfortunately it is the only VCR we have.
Anyway thank you so much for your advice and your video! ☺️
@Grace wow I'm happy you kept films of your childhood moments. Camcorders were so expensive depending on the model and format/media film used. Around 97 98 my brother was lucky to have owned a bulky handheld Camcorder. It had very atrocious battery life especially if you are required to use the light to record video at night LOL. Not to mention the price of the individual tapes were expensive as well. You had to take the smaller tape. And inserted into a VHS type adapter casing specifically used for those smaller tapes. Despite the two to three hour longevity on the camera battery. My younger brother loved filming random things on those tapes. I only wish that he had filmed my father rather than to just film anything. We had it for a very long time before eventually it started to malfunction. So there was plenty of time to capture all of my father's mannerisms on tape even conversations with my dad would have been wonderful to still have the privilege of viewing. Had I been more creative rather than to rely on my younger sibling. I would have taken my father to the ball games and recorded as much as I possibly could with that camcorder. Any possible commentary my father could have made regarding his experiences at the ball games. Sadly I didn't get to spend as much time as I should have. Nowadays it's so much easier getting videos on several types of digital media, not to mention less expensive. I mean there were a few expensive digital format camcorders in early 2000s. Including those that you could use compact digital DVDs to record on. But I never stretched my budget too actually decide on getting one. I just wasn't passionate about recording memories live.
Hi there have you come across VCR's with Auto Head Cleaner, they were a terrible feature on many VCR's I had a Philips, Sony which had an Auto Head Cleaner, like a spongey type item near the heads attached to a guide, it caused tapes to be chewed and NO PLAYBACK, Blue Screen, or No Picture, after I had removed the sponge I had no further issues. I have seen some on Aiwa, Sharp VCR's and others, best to remove the sponge if it's there as it will chew up tapes or you will get no Playback. Thanks.
Thank you for the information,
Are some VCR's better then others in terms of video quality?
Hi there! I loved your video and you seem to know a lot about vcr’s so I was wondering if you could help me. I bought my first vcr today and have been having a bit of an issue. The movies i watch will cut off and go black but the audio plays and then the picture will come back. It does it periodically a few times throughout the entire film. Could this be because the head needs to be cleaned or is it more-so an issue with the tapes themselves ? Also can I use cosmetic sponge wedges to clean the heads ?
It possibly could be the tapes if they are very old the technology uses magnetic transfer, and as they age they can degrade over time. I think the cosmetic wedge is OK to clean the heads that’s about the best you can do. Also, you should try to get those tapes digitally transferred if you want to preserve them. Thank you for watching my videos. I hope I helped you a little bit.
I’m not too sure if it is the tapes or the vcr head itself but I will try your method and give it a good cleaning! I was playing an austin powers movie and it worked just fine, no blacking out or anything and then I played a pretty woman film (i have two and both did the blacking out) that looked fairly newer than the austin powers one and it did it a lot too so maybe it is the films ? not too sure but i’m going to clean them and see if that helps
is cleaning needed if your vcr making your vhs tapes skipping during playback, if thats the promblem,
That is possible. Also it could be the rollers need to be cleaned as well

Would a dirty video head cause the tape to pull out of the cassette? Two cassettes in a row, I placed in the VCR and it looked like the tape was trying to wrap itself around the head. The tape stopped and I had to remove the cover to the VCR to unwrap the tape from the mechanism. For the second tape, I kept the cover off so I could see what was happening. That's when it looked like the tape was wrapping around the head. In both cases, I had to also open the cassette cases so I could get the tape back into the cassette. Wasn't much...about 2 inches, as I caught the problem fairly quickly. Thanks!
Is the video head spinning?
My combo player displays a one-inch green line at the top of the screen ONLY when playing VHS movies that were shot in COLOR (black and white play fine, and DVDs play fine). Is this symptomatic of clogged heads? Please advise. Thanks!
Yes it sounds like it
@@YourReviewChannel I gave it a try, but the problem remains. Ah well. Time to buy a new one :(
Would windex or glass cleaner be an appropriate substitute? I know it's not as good as rubbing alcohol, but would it work?

How do you make your VCR record tapes in color because idk if something is wrong with mine because I want to put a film I made on a physical tape for a nostalgic feel. I put in a blank tape and picture was fine and sound was fine but the thing recorded all in black and white. Is there an explanation or way I can make it do color?

Ok, I've got a weird issue...
I have two identical Samsung DVD-V1000 units... One one machine, I started getting almost a static line about 3/4 the way vertically up the screen... Other machine no issue...

hello! i dont have any rubbing alcohol at my house, but i have amyl nitrite. i keep googling it but can’t get a straight answer, is it really alright to clean my vcr with it? it hasn’t been working properly and i’m pretty devastated.
I would just buy some rubbing alcohol at your local store and use that instead
If I don't have alcohol readily available, can I use pure white vinegar?
I would not use vinegar, even rubbing alcohol would be fine
When I put a tape in my vcr seconds later the head stops spinning & vcr cuts off. Help! Love your channel by the way.

My Hitachi VCR is very old. It actually still plays original movie ( store bought ) tapes, just fine. But when I play my blank ( recorded on ) tapes , it plays for a few seconds ( or a few minutes ), then powers off.
I wonder what the difference is.
I'm gonna try one of those self cleaning tapes, and see if that works. If not, then I'll open it and clean it myself.
Thank you sir for this tutorial. I thought manually cleaning a VCR head was going to be complicated and a pain in the butt.
But after watching this , I feel a lot more relaxed about it.

A question, so if someone were using a VCR to run a number of tapes with mold thru to help remove the mold, would this cleaning or anything else be able to make it a usable VCR again? or is running moldy tapes thru it a death sentence for that VCR?
It's Possible it could kill the video head. Try cleaning The Heads after a couple of tapes to keep it under control.
I haven't actually tried it yet, just weighing option before jumping in. I have two VCR's and recently picked up some tapes, about 10 have visible mold spots. So I wasn't sure if I wanna designate one just to try and salvage those. I still have one of those head cleaner cassettes but I'm sure the solution that came with it evaporated by now, the thing is about 30 years old :)

Rubber belts gone bad maybe?
skip to 5:40
Or learn the way to do it
Good but video but damn do you take ten years to get to the point, holy crap I spent half of it like “bruh come on already, stop repeating yourself and wittering on”
Thanks man, my piece of shit sony BD player died on me thanks to it's Sony Timer so I decided to hook up my old VHS/DVD player for fun, but the VHS picture jumps around and loses color, so I figured this was the issue.
I'm not subscribing though. Shut the hell up about it.

Can this be done through the doors? I have a TV w/ the vrc built-in doesn't easily come apart
No, you really have to pull off the cover to do it right. It’s not that complicated. It’s pretty easy.
I'm nervous to clean my JVC HR-S9800 VCR, hahaha! I think I'll practice on a cheap Mastsui one or whatever it's called that my dad found in my parent's basement.
Good idea. But don’t be nervous. If you follow my steps, There won’t be any issues.
Would a q tip be fine to use?
No definitely do not use a Q-tip. The fibers will get stuck in the head.
Bro … get to the video already. 2 minutes of bs. Stop doing that.
Actual cleaning procedure starts at 5:12
According to the videographer, do not touch the face of the drum which contains the heads with your fingers as doing so may damage the heads (for an illustration of exactly where the actual heads are see: ua-cam.com/video/lRNv4uM6auI/v-deo.html and go to time stamp 9:20). Instead touch the edge of the drum to spin the heads as shown in the video at 4:24 and at 4:35.
