The fast forward has always more torque on these machines because the reel drive belt underneath stretches a bit, and only one idler tire is used. In rewind the belt doesn't stretch and both idlers are used. I would also take the shine off of the upper drum. That causes the tape to drag as well. You can see where the tapes have left a wear mark on the drum over the years.
That would certainly explain the torque difference. I don’t usually touch the upper drum on the 3 piece drums but yeah there is certainly wear present and it would only help. Thanks for the info!
I would have probably cleaned the idler tires as well, the torque is a bit low for rewind. But this is a great machine. Quality is excellent, and with good alignment will produce an excellent picture.
@@ehgriffith I had the same thought as you by the end. It worked but I wasn’t satisfied with the performance. If it weren’t my own machine I would have done it as a rule.
I learned how to clean the polish from the pinch roller. It was new and good information. Greetings and thanks from Turkey...
Happy you got something out of it :). Thanks for the comment!
what an impressive old machine...they really built them like an tank back in those days. Old tech like this is worth restoring 😉

Sorry, didn't watch until the end.
