I have seen those slugs shoot some nice groups. As we know, it comes down to the barrel/gun.

Yep, that's why you gotta test your own setup combo before just taking it out into the woods blindly

I miss when they made these copper plated truball at the full 1600 they use a harder alloy lead plus the plating don't lead up the barrel as bad

Yeah, the velocity is quite a bit lower compared to most other rifled slugs out there

Good video! You should try Remington slugger high velocity 2 3/4 inch slugs. They are the best grouping slug I've found in my Remington 870 with a smooth bore 18.5 inch barrel. It would be cool to see them tested out of different guns and see the velocity because I do not have a chronograph. Good video and God bless.

I actually do have some of those Slugger HV 7/8oz slugs that I plan on testing really soon, so we'll see how they do!

I picked up some of the non-plated versions of these in the low recoil (1300fps), the normal (1600), and 3" (1700) varieties. Along with some brenneke green lightnings, and ATS slugs. Looking forward to these upcoming slug tests!

I have a 20 ga smooth bore with a rifled choke that I used for a slug gun last year. In my testing with it before last deer season I tried all kinds of slugs even some 3 inch “magnum” slugs. After testing about 5 different brands, surprisingly the federal truball was one of the worst. Giving me a 5 inch group at 50 yards on a good day. As compared to the 2 inch group at 50 yards that I saw from Herters slugs and also Winchester

That is good information about the Herter’s.

@@burkejones8277 in my experience they’re pretty good. Took a 10 point with them last year!

The Herter's and Winchester shells are the same. Winchester makes Herter's. I tested the Herter's slugs last year through this 870 and couldn't even get them to hold a 12" group at 50 yards. I don't know why they were so terrible, but that video just ended up getting scrapped essentially since I couldn't keep them on target

@@matttyreeoutdoors Oh good to know! Didn’t know they were the same. I guess that explains why they grouped the same for me. Every gun has its preferences. Certain guns may like a particular ammo and another may not. Always fun to hear others experience and test things

With your fully rifled barrel stick to sabots, yeah I know they are pricey. With the truballs use them in your 11-87 smoothbore.

We have done a bunch of sabot testing with it, but I still like to test whatever I can because you never know what will perform surprisingly good

@@matttyreeoutdoors I was always told you will gunk up the lands and grooves if you use a full bore Foster slug. Even read it books only about shotguns.

Was that from a clean barrel?
I've had similar results from a clean barrel until I shot about 12 rounds thru it and then it started grouping better

    • @matttyreeoutdoors
      @matttyreeoutdoors  Місяць тому

It had probably about 10 rounds or so through it before this test, so it wasn't a perfectly clean barrel

I like you, Son. I like your channel. You're doing a pretty good job. I want to give you just a little bit of advice, because I want to see your channel grow. You need a little less talk and a little more shooting. Also, perk it up a little. I'm not sure how, but you need to be a little more lively. And you need a catch line for opening and closing. You're off to a good start. Work at it and you will prosper.
