No matter how much you and a family member are fighting, as soon as the topic goes to someone outside the family that neither of you like, it brings you together again.
I feel bad for smirking at this because it's true. My sister and I do not get along but when we don't like another person-it's kind of bonding to crack jokes
I love the fact that Queen Mary cannot supress a smirk at the Duke of Windsor's bitchy remarks about the Queen Mother and Prince Phillip.
I will indeed be referring to several as cookie where it is appropriate now knowing the true definition lol
Listening to him speak was just like being in a gay bar! 😂🤣
@@nylotus absolutely! I howled watching this...
@@nylotus The "cookie" nickname is even crueler than he describes it here. It comes from the rumor the Elizabeth's actual mother was a cook at the Glamis estate who had an affair with Elizabeth's father.
It’s such a good touch lol
According to the Bank of England inflation calculator, £10,000 in 1952 would be equivalent to about £240,000 today.
Tax free of course, for a man who betrayed his country and was a Nazi sympathiser.
Which, at current exchange rates, comes to around €280,00 or $315,000. What destitution!
Madness. With such a small sum of money, how could he afford to have dodo's eggs and unicorn milk for breakfast? What a poor guy.
@@ReptilianLepton…maybe in Europe that’s a lot but in America, but that’s not really a whole lot of money. Sure, you could live on it but you’re not living extravagant the way you’re thinking, you wouldn’t have mansions and super cars and taking private jets or anything of the sort. In fact, in places like Los Angeles, that’d barely afford a normal middle class lifestyle with not a whole lot of extras. Maybe with some frugality you could pay for some of your child’s college but likely not. Maybe you could afford a few nice vacations but sparingly.
I’m just saying it’s important in context.
@@ReptilianLeptonsorry I struggle to see how that is a struggle for someone like the royals. Yes they are never going to be mega rich but that is still rich. I barely made $20,000 last year and most of it went to bills and rent and I find it kind of insulting when someone as rich as them has a plea of poverty when they really don't know what being poor is.
I think it's pretty clear where Andrew got his whininess and sense of entitlement from.
I love that the writers made this guy an insufferable jerk. 😅
And in season 3, they made him more sympathetic.
I was curious, so I looked it up on an online inflation calculator. £10,000 in 1952 is equivalent in purchasing power to about £360,594.47 in 2024. I live in Canada, and this is the equivalent of CAD $620,076.45 - that's a huge pension!
Depends on what Edward would’ve spent that money on.
@Yogg_Saron Meh, he gave up that right.
@Yogg_Saronhe was only sovereign for a short while. He didn't even have a coronation before he quit!
Thanks for looking this up. Yes, that's a huge income!
@@carlbirtles4518 Nazi uniforms?
So sharp and yet all it achieved was that he cut himself. What a great deliverance from evil that was.
If he had been king we would now all be speaking German ( assuming the SS hadn't gassed us all ). An absolute traitor.
@@artful1967 That or we would never have been born as the Nazi German plan was to punish the British by enslaving or killing all the men and having Germans sire a new generation of “Britons” on the Indigenous women of the British Isles.
@@uptoncriddington6939 Is this true? I thought Hitler considered Britons to be Aryan?
@@cherylhulting1301 Yes, that was the plan because Britain chose to fight rather than not oppose Hitler. He did consider the British to be Aryan, but infused with the wrong outlook. As punishment, the men were all to be killed, save those who were outright fascists like Mosley, and a new race of British fathered on British women by German men was to replace them to create “Britons” loyal to the Reich.
@@artful1967the germans didn’t have plans to colonise britain. at worst a fascist government allied to germany was the end goal. as a pole however, i and my kind would have less luck.
0:48 and 1:42 Queen Mary found it funny 🤣🤣🤣 her smirks
Specially with his remark about Phillip. In later episodes she expresses disdain towards his family, calling them "carpetbaggers and parvenus"
I with there had been a scene in which Edward was told he didn't have a snide nickname because no one gave him enough thought to come up with one.
Oh I'm sure there was a few nicknames along the lines of parasite
Well he certainly had enough names. Seven Christian names ! 😊
They are both national treasures!! I ❤ Eileen!!
I’m basing this more on history than the TV show, but my God Edward was such a spoiled brat.
It was always “me me me” with him. His grandfather Bertie loved women and living the playboy lifestyle too, but even he knew when it was time to get down to business and do responsible, royal stuff.
And he did for a homely recycled bride that was infatuated with that German madman.
Edward was smart for leaving that royal nonsense behind.
@@ThunderTheBlackShadowKitty He didn't "leave it behind." Parliamentary members wanted him gone. He was a security risk.
@@cherylhulting1301 Any Parliament made up of Tories are irrelevant, because their ideology simply doesn't work
Someone might want to remind Queen Mary, that she married up too and was probably less royal than Phillip. Phillip was the male line grandson and Great-Grandson of ruling monarchs ,and his mother had been born at Windsor Castle. Mary's mother was the female line granddaughter of the 10th child of George III and her father was the product of a Morganatic marriage between the second son of minor German duke and a Hungarian courtier.
Württemberg was a kingdom, and thus ruled by a king, and not a "minor German duke".
@@thomasrinschler6783 Her grandfather was never King but the second son and therefore a Duke, and her father had to take the minor honor of Teck, since he couldn't be of Wurttemberg after his fathers marriage... and even as a kingdom, it was relatively minor compared to Greece or Denmark
Facts! I needed someone to say that.
Mary was also very cost conscious. Running around the castles marking down all the antiques & such. Interesting set of pearls though 😂
But still, “the Foundling” is too good to pass up! 😜
Calling the queen mum cookie is such a top tier read.
Frugal in every department 😆 🤣 😂
Boom!
Well... He didn't hold back.
When the writing, and acting, was sharp, and witty. Characters, not caricatures.
New newer seasons remind me more of daytime soap opera. But to each their own, I guess :)
Seasons 1-2 are easily the best. Captured history in a beautiful way. I gave up mid way season 4 during the Charles and Diana stuff.
@@Blueeey Agreed. For me, it's because Charles/Diana have been done ad nauseam; movies, books, tv, streaming specials, news reports, magazines, social media...
The Crown seasons on that felt, to me, like a re-hashing of a re-hash. I wanted something new...
But, I suppose, TC had to touch on it - as important as it is to the Royal Family saga.
It didn't shed light on anything new.
@@WoodlandDanceI have already remarked about it on a different comment thread, but it baffles me how in season 5 John Major was reduced to a mediator between the Waleses. Like that's the prime minister who presided over the Good Friday agreement and the beginnings of euro integration. With all the previous prime ministers, we were shown the actual historic moments during their terms, the fact that we only got Windsor family drama with John Major really demonstrates how much more of a family melodrama the show had become, compared to earlier seasons where it was a beautiful historical snapshot.
The actor also played Prince Charles in The Queen
The Queen Mother may not have been royal but she understood duty far better then he ever could. Also the Queen Mother looked much better then Wallis who looked hard, mean & manly.
What a rude pos to refer to the queen mother the way he did.
His wife was a gold digger.
She was. Her biography by Anne Sebba really dives deep into her backstory though and you can kind of see why she was the way that she was. Please understand that I’m not excusing her behavior, just stating that there were several events in her (death of her father, family issues, abusive husband etc) that made her into that person.
Not only that but a Nazi gold digger
There are many accounts that claim Wallis Simpson didn't actually want to marry him. She was smart enough to realise she could never be Queen, so she wanted to remain as his mistress and reap the rewards. The abdication probably was as much a shock to her as it was to everyone else.
He loved her though. The jewelry collection she left to auction was stunning
He was a nazi sympathiser
It's the entitlement I find difficult to reconcile. He deserted his position and thought everything should be the same. (Ring any bells?).
Considering his visit to Hitler ect he did more then leveing his duty and station
That's not really the point here, though. That is the point that could be argued *when* the agreement between Bertie and David was made, like is it reasonable to give him that? But now that the agreement is fact, it's not about the terms, it's about honoring it. Imagine if your get a new boss and he says "I just realized the guy before me was paying you too much, I'm cutting your pay".
@@chingizzhylkybayev8575 He had hidden money ect and considering what he had done it yes they possebly could have given him money and keept the deal however Edward broke that deal in the late 30’s and during WW2 with his behavior and frankly it would been not only PR sucide for the royal family to do this but also politicly as even thoe they were not politicly involved the royal family relied on the politicians and the pepol and Edward had pissed the pepol and the politicians off
@@chingizzhylkybayev8575 The main point is that King George was deceived by his brother as to his assets at the time. He had squirreled away whilst he was Prince of Wales nearly £1M which equates to £20M in todays money.
Thank heavens prince Harry is nothing like this. He married a millionaire used to making a living. So he is a multimillionaire now from working hard. Unfortunately he is being dragged back to the UK for family engagements
Yes a lot of money but
David wanted to make Wallis
Queen so he spent as much as possible on her and she didn't care about David at all
That was a NYC salary back then!
When you see / look at the jewellery Wallis had he was not exactly skint.
To think the current King of England found this guy relatable.
I m not surprised, they share some similarities they are both disgraceful people.
Edward was a nazi
Charles is an adultery committing king that ruined a woman’s life.
He WAS the current King's uncle.
Great uncle.
@@robertbendix4814 Well, yes, technically you are correct. Great Uncle. Still someone to look up to and be respected though. Especially since the King was so young when he lost his grandfather the old King.
@@dariuswong9764That woman herself ruined her life. Her adultery, her wrong choice of men and her paranoia were the reasons her life became so miserable. It was Charles who had to bear her madness without any complaining in public.
He did nothing for the tax payers and the family he decided to stepped down, so why he asked for anything from this family again.
He didn’t give everything up. They had to BUY Sandringham and Balmoral off of him amongst other things. He should’ve been cut off!
He inherited Balmoral and Sandringham from his father. Those are privately owned by the RF, so he owned them fair and square until he sold them to whichever family member ended up owning them (probably George VI).
"Don't call him that, don't call her that" what is he 10?
She said that cuz she agreed. You forget the queen Mary had been hand picc’d to be a queen consort by queen victoria. From true nobility, and birthed 2 kings. David was just saying her underlying thoughts.
UNTIL EILEEN ATKINS COMES IN❤
Well, all I have to say is boohoo to Edward VIII! You chose to give up everything for your money hungry of a gold digging wife she was!
Bye, Felicia!!😅
What a nasty creature he was. He appears to have slogged through life angry at everyone for his lot in life, when he was responsible for the life he chose.
He was frugal she said in a room made of gold and priceless paintings
She means in his day to day spending, not the inherited house that came with inherited old furniture.
Those furnitures and paintings were century old inherited stuffs, not something they purchased at that time.

There was Edward
[P Margaret did cause some pains]
Then was Andrew
Then was Harry
Monarchy must be beware of spares, i guess they had been doing it since the beginning of royal times!
The crown was better in the early seasons. They lost their way after the 90s
This is fiction. A nonsense.
Hard to like anyone in this family.
What about Anne and Edward. They just try to live their lives and don’t care about the crown or moving up the line
Edward Annie Sophie prince philip
He fails to mention, but his mother knew, he lied about his finances and extorted money from his brother in the settlement.
George VI went deeply in debt to buy back the royal properties Edward had been left by his parents. Balmoral and Sandringham.
Queen Mother had much to blame him for.
Hard not to, for me.
Good to know Harry left all that nonsense.
That will be Ginge von Gringe in a few years.
Most of this tacky series is ham-fisted, clunking exposition.
I see Harry's future, lol
Just brilliant work by actors and writers. Much as I adore Atkins, I also admit to being a huge Alex Jennings fan. He's great in everything he takes on, but really brought it home with this portrayal -- though the real duke, from what I've read and seen, was utterly vacant, with nothing of the caustic wit and personality seen here. Thanks for posting!
That title makes him sound 10 years old I love it
Well, he was a Nazi sympathizer, so I suppose it would be awkward if he didn’t suffer from some sort of a superiority complex.
“We barely make ends meet…every day is a struggle “. Nobody in this family will ever have to worry about money.
£10,000 a year is about £230,000 in today's money. That's not huge all things considered.
I can see why he can’t make ends meet. I would love to “struggle “ with that six figure pittance.

Eileen really was amazing. She could play a downstairs servant in GOSFORD PARK. And here she plays a Dowager Queen....cold but dry humored and wise. Im told its a pretty fair interpretation of Mary.
She is divine!
Not only is it an accurate portrayal of who she was purported to be, but Eileen is the double of Mary of Teck, which makes it even better.
not just “a” downstairs servant but THE cook - she shared senority with Helen Mirren’s character of the housekeeper 🤫😉

Not trying to be rude but you write this under every Crown clip lol. The videos will keep coming, don't worry.
I love it too 😮
ITS NICE WHEN A MOTHER AND HER SON CAN STILL BE SNOBBY TOGETHER CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG EDWARD IS REFERRING TO PHILLIP WHEN HE SAYS FOUNDLING IS HE NOT
Yeah, he's referring to Philip.
Yes
Yes Prince Philip of Greece of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Gluecksburg. His father Prince Andrew basically abandoned his mother Princess Alice of Battenberg. His mother did not like Mountbatten name. Prince Philip sisters all married German princes. Prince Philip spoke fluent German himself.Prince Philip's German nephews were at his funeral.
In 1952, £10,000 was roughly equivalent to £360,000. He also received a house from the French government, royalties from his book, and cash from illegal currency trading.
And George VI had to buy Balmoral off since that is not part of the crown estate and does not automatically pass onto the next monarch.
Seriously, Edward has big nerves to talk and ask for his allowance only a few days after his brother's decease and after he willingly abdicated the crown.
Honestly, I thought when I first watched this scene that he would AT LEAST have the decency to wait until right before returning with his wife. But I was wrong. I mean, how dares he to ask to his mother, whom he has not seen in many years, about his allowance. He said he was a king, he didn't even received the coronation ceremony
He was actually worth millions of dollars.
I'm seriously puzzled that anybody sees Edward as sympathetic when the man is just as pretentious and just as much of a spoiled brat as the rest of them! Not only that, they revealed in the show how he gave information to the nazis, visited hitler, and actively engaged in a plot to try to overthrow the British government so he could be king and force Britain to surrender. And somehow we're supposed to feel sorry for him??? No, when he died in the show I thought good riddance.
Why do people think this is real ? It's a tv drama.
Traitor.
The Crown predicted Prince Harry lol
How?
Does anyone know which episode this was?
This show really makes me despise the royal family and all it stands for.
It's fairly sympathetic to the late Queen Elizabeth II though.
