    Even as a Sony shooter, everything that you said about Canon is true. The menu system is sublime and takes no time to get used to. I love the way the R5 and R6 feels in your hands. The ergonomics, where the subcommander dial is great, but for me Sony's are far more programable, you can change any button to do anything else. Canon and Nikon are limited in this regard. Sony is like a small computer in that regard. Image quality is about the same for the brands and Sony has now caught up, but Canon and Nikon use to beat them. Canon has to get this lens situation figured out, include full size HDMI inputs on. Nikon lately is killing it with some of the best lenses on the market. Nikon has come a long way, and they are competing with Canon and Sony on almost every level. Regardless of what camera you get, you can take great photos and have a great experience.

      I really appreciate your comments! It used to be all about Nikon and Canon, then Sony came along and really shook things up with their mirrorless cameras. They were the innovators and I think they drove the industry to a better place. That’s the way competition works I guess. And your last statement is a great one, at the end of the day just get out there and enjoy what you have - they all allow you to do great stuff!

      Sony forced everyone else to go mirrorless thanks to the autofocus they were killing it with before theothers joined in. Canon's R was a little rough, RP good for cheap and adapted lenses, and Nikon was also a little rough until the Zf and Z8/9. But Nikon and Canon with the Eos 1 and F5 and then 1Ds and D3 were killing it. Sony however, killed Canon for ages with sensor performance. And Nikon hopped on to Sony sensors to also put Canon in the dust for dynamic range. The 2019 Canon RP has the exact dynamic range as the 2008 5D mk2. 5D4 and R were much better. The R6/R5 is when Canon finally got on par with everyone else.
      I do love Nikon for huge used lens choice, Sony has huge third part lens support, and cheap used prices for really good sensors, and good video features. So it's a toss up really, every camera is a good one and has its pros and cons.

    I'm not a pro photographer and more into APSC. My late dad bought a Canon 600D (T3i) back in 2012. He then passed away a year later. I then took over the camera for my personal use since none of my siblings were interested in using a bulky camera. My main usage was for personal, travel and family photos. In 2020, I then purchased a Sony A6600. Until then, whenever I took landscape (beach and sky) and family photos, I always compared them with my old photos captured with 600D. I can see that the color science of Canon is true to real life. I've decided that the new Canon R5 II will be my future camera.

    2 of my reasons are because of ergonomics and color science. Color science means less processing time for me as a wedding photographer to get to the true to life colors I look for in the pictures. Ergonomics is because i have big hands and it doesn't cramp after a 8 hour wedding day. I used another brand once and my hands were cramping the rest if the night. Great video!!!

    Reasons I love Canon: Easy buttons and menus. jpegs looks great. Amazing lenses for Real Estate photos like the 14-35 f/4 unparalleled on any system with that huge focal range for tiny bathroom to filming realtors talking to camera with the same lens... also flat front element for a screw on CPL. My first canon was a Canon Ftbn film camera bought in 1974. I painted houses all summer long to buy the camera. I bought it because I read an article about how a canon survived a fall down the side of a mountain. I knew I'd be rough on my cameras so went with the brand. I've bought several different brands over the years - but I seem to always come back to Canon. Mainly because I understand how they work (the user interface). Right now I'm trying to decide if I need to upgrade to the new mirrorless line. But, I've already spent so much on the lenses and not sure I want to spend the money while I'm still happy with my old 6Dm2. Yes! sensor cleaning is one of my favorite parts of my canon. I hate cleaning sensor dust both on the camera and in post. I'm in agreement with all your reasons! Thanks for the link I'll have to check it out.

      All those lenses you're using with your 6DMkII will still work with the new R series mirrorless cameras when you do finally decide to get one of those in the future. The adapter that Canon has for EF lenses works flawlessly - I'm still using several of my old lenses and have no complaints. But I don't think you need to be in any hurry to upgrade. If the 6DMkII does the job for you then stick with it until you wear it out!

    I am an amateur entusiast photographer and have been shooting with Canon since I went digital over fifteen years ago .
    My first Canon was a 350D , followed by a 600D , 7D , 6D , 7Dmkii , and a 5 Dmkiii . I recently scored a mint 70D , case and 3 lenses in a thrift shop for $10 , score !
    I love Canon ergonomics , image quality , and the bulletproof build quality of the 5D and 7D series . You could be excused for calling me a bit of a Canon fanboy .
    I am about to move to mirrorless to take advantage of the improved autofocus capabilities and smaller form factor . The R6 or R6mkii tick all the boxes for me and would suit me down to the ground . Sadly , I am in the process of selling my Canon kit and moving to Sony.
    One of the major reasons I went with Canon in the first place was the large volume of third party lenses available for the brand . I currently have lenses from Sigma , Tamron , Canon EF-S , Canon EF (standard and "L") in my colection .
    As much as I would love to get an R6ii , Canon's policy on 3rd party glass means that as a system, Canon is simply unaffordable for me. For the the shooting I do , weather sealed lenses are a must . In the Canon ecosystem that means L glass . By all accounts the RF L lenses are some of the finest ever built , it but would require the sale of a kidney for me to afford some .
    I will have to settle for a Sony body , some very good , as opposed to excellent Sigma or Tamron lenses , and a used Sony 600 zoom (to take advantage of Sony's maximum frame rates).
    I would love to stick with Canon , but economically , that is no longer an option.

    • @RobHuntOutside
      @RobHuntOutside  2 місяці тому

      Thanks for sharing! Canon is still a bit early in their RF lens development so it is certainly true that you will have a more broad cost offering from someone like Sony. I believe they started with their mirrorless mount lenses in 2011 so there has been quite a lot of time to let things develop there and thus you have more options and some lower cost opportunities. With Canon, this just takes some time and they started on the RF mount much later so they are still early in the process. So I agree with you, there are going to be better cost options with the Sony lens mount for a while so your thinking makes sense. One other thing I would mention, Canon has a big professional community so they have to put priority on the L glass development first to make sure they are giving their professional community good lens options for their mirrorless cameras.

    • @mikafoxx2717

      @@RobHuntOutsideYeah, you're not wrong. You can always adapt to RF though, all that L glass or Tamron SP weather sealing. But a good weather proofed R mount camera is pricey. The 35 and 50 are somewhat affordable, but not much else. I still rock my little 40 2.8 on the adapter instead of either, most of the time.

    All very good points. I haven't been with Canon nearly as long as you, but it has been over 20 years for me.
    I started out with a Sears brand SLR with a Pentax K mount that I bought from my brother, and followed that with a couple other Pentax SLRs. When I was ready to make the move to auto-focus sometime in 2002, I looked at Pentax, and there was nothing that met what I wanted without going top end for top price. It came down to the Canon Elan 7 and the Nikon N80. I was working at a camera store at the time, and Canon's employee purchase program really tipped the scales. The Elan 7 was definitely the better bang for the buck. After being reluctant to switch to digital, I sold a 1D something for $8K (that really was the price back then) to a customer and he sold me his old 10D. A few years later I managed to upgrade to a 40D, and another 10 years later, I got the R5 that I've been using for that last 2 years. The thing I always go back to is how it feels in my hand and the other brands just don't have that same feel. I always urge people to hold the camera before they choose because they'll use it more if it feels good.

Even after I sold my gear during the lockdowns and had reason to go with another brand (had looked at Sony but didn't really like the bodies) I still came back to Canon as the R6 II was the best bang for buck pro cam available and the ability to adapt EF lenses to the R system with no loss in quality (and essentially native AF performance) was key.

    Same here. I’m a Canon user for the last 16 years and didn’t think about picking up any other brand despite knowing Nikon and Pentax are also great brands.
    I started out with a Canon point & shoot camera in 2008 and that was what convinced me to stick with this brand. Then bought a DSLR few months later. Till now I’ve bought several DSLRs and finally settled with some pro bodies like 1D Mark IV, 5D Mark II & III and 7D. Yes, agree again these are highly reliable cameras. I also use native lenses and own quite a few L versions. Being a pure hobbyist; shoot landscape, nightscape, street photos, lifestyle and wildlife.
    Didn't switch to mirrorless because I don't see any compelling reasons for doing so.
    My other reasons for using Canon are; these cameras are easy to operate, produce decent images with lovely colors. Troubleshooting is also easy by seasoned technicians if it’s of small nature.
    Canon suffers from one shortcoming i.e., dynamic range. Nikon has it better. However, to me it’s not a big headache as a lot can be fixed in post.

    Not all Canon cameras were so reliable. The 5D line and 7D line were indestructible and will endure anything. But lesser range cameras had problems like the 60D sudden death, or T3 sudden death, both due poor quality components on the power motherboard.
    I'm still waiting to change to mirrorless. I'll wait up to the next year (2025) to decide which brand. It could be Sony or Canon. Less probably Nikon or Fuji.
    If Canon do three things I'll stick with Canon until the apocalypse:
    - Fully open the RF mount (most probably it won't happen)
    - Allow to use APSC lenses in full frame mode (most probably it won't happen)
    - Make a simpler way to use custom white balance like any other brand (maybe Canon did it in new cameras, I don't even know)
    The Canon R6 / R5 ergonomics are unsurpassed. But the lenses situation make me doubt.

    • @RobHuntOutside
      @RobHuntOutside  17 днів тому

      @@KatieF307 I’m curious what brand you were using previously and for how long? It may be that you were really comfortable with that brand and are having trouble shifting gears to Canon. I have no doubt that sometimes certain brands just don’t work for us, especially with something so ‘hands on’ like photography. So it may just be that Canon doesn’t work for you. When I think about myself, what I really want is for the camera to kind of just be out of the way and let me see the image and let me smoothly get to the settings I want to capture the image the way I’m envisioning. For me this only comes with repetition and just getting comfortable with the camera and the nuances that they all have. Interestingly, when I switched from my old Canon 5Dmk4 to the mirrorless R5 it honestly took me a while to adapt and I was already a Canon user. I will admit I had some moments of frustration with the change, but all good now and the more I use the R5, the more I like it. So, my only thought would be maybe give it a bit more time. After all, changing brands is an expensive proposition. But extracting joy is very personal and maybe your old brand just really resonated with you - this stuff can’t be measured.

    I'm a Nikon guy and while I haven't owned a Canon in a long time, I've used many of their cameras over the years and would agree with most of this. While I prefer the layout of my Nikons, their cameras have a great interface. I picked up a set of r5s I was tasked to shoot with, and figured out the controls immediately. I used both of them for 10 hours straight without once being confused where any function was. Every Sony I've touched, is a learning curve for controls. Canon still has the best skintones (ala Kodak) of any brand and unlike Nikon their customer service & marketing is good.
    Also they have a great lens lineup and the quality of their current glass is among the best in class. I found their DSLR glass to somewhat be lacking when shot wide open but that hasn't been the case for the last 10 years. I do prefer the overall color science of the Nikon and I have found their gear to be slightly more durable.
    My biggest gripe with Canon is not their product, but their users. Many canon shooters act like their gear is far better than Nikon, Sony, Fuji etc. I find myself being oversold on the function of the gear and then upon using it, it is on par or sometimes under what I am used to by other camera brands. The 5dmk2 was one such camera, as was the r5, both which I have used multiple times and multiple bodies. I still would recommend any new shooter to try their gear as it is a great system.
    On an unrelated note they make the best printers on the market.

    I’m not sure where you get the idea that Sony cameras draw more dust than canon cameras. Do you think they have like some kind of special magnet inside the sensor that pulls the dust in? There are cameras from both Sony and Canon that have a shutter that comes down over the sensor when you switch lenses. I have both.

    • @RobHuntOutside
      @RobHuntOutside  3 місяці тому +1

      Just observation and I was definitely tuned in to discussions regarding this on earlier A7r’s since those were cameras I was interested in. The Sony’s didn’t always have the anti-dust shutter and this was certainly part of it earlier on. I would love to talk with Sony’s engineering team to understand trade-offs they may have made - I find this very interesting. But my focus here is mainly on Canon and as I stated, I find their anti-dust technology “pretty darn good” - that’s it.

    I heard the R5 wasn't as reliable as the pro cameras from the past. (5DMK4 etc) I see people complaining that it overheats, freezes sometimes and requires the batteries to be popped out and put back on to make it work again. Have you had any of those issues?

    • @RobHuntOutside
      @RobHuntOutside  3 місяці тому +3

      I have certainly heard some of the things you mention with the R5, but I personally haven't had any issues with mine. I think some of the overheating issues were related to recording 8k video for extended periods so there is some thermal limit there. This is the reason Canon came out with the R5C to better handle the 8k video demands for long time periods that hard-core film makers need.

    I bought a 1000d in May, only cost me £40 with the 18-55mm kit lens and that was it! Hooked, I was able to learn some basics of photography with this and I used it for 3 weeks before upgrading up to a 60D and a Tamron 70-300mm lens, just bought a 5d Mark III and a nifty 50 and wow! I wish I had done this so long ago. I will end up with mirrorless at some point, but I recall these DSLR's coming out and I could not afford them. I'm happy picking up these older cameras for peanuts and the quality they deliver is pretty damn fine at the price point!

    I too have stay with Canon since the days of film. I liked the way the camera felt in my hands so when it was time to change to digital I stayed with Canon. That fact I was able to continue to use my lenses was a big plus. Even when the RF mount came out, $69 from the Canon refurbished store, allowed me to buy an adapter to use my EF lenses on my R bodies, R5 and R7. I have slowly migrated to RF lenses but my EF 70-200 III will stick around for a while.
    The only cameras that made me think about changing were the Z9 and Z8. Essentially eliminating rolling shutter is huge. The cost of changing brands, having to learning to rotate the lens the opposite direction to remove and attach, and getting used to a new button layout and menu system made my realize the gains I may get weren't enough to justify it for me. The Sony A1 feels too small to me. I know it produces great images, they all do, but if I am going to be holding the camera for hours, I want to be comfortable. I would actually like my R5 to be a little taller. On my R7 I 3D printed a grip extender that makes it about as perfect for my hands as you can get.

      @@jeffolson4731 Thanks so much for sharing that - great comments! Agree about the size of the R5 and mirrorless cameras in general - they all seem a tad small to me. Thanks for watching!

    I used Canon cameras & lens for nearly 40years, everything from a F1 film camera to the 5DRS digital camera & numerous EF “L” lenses. The new RF lenses offer excellent image quality albeit at a premium price point. The EF to RF lens adapter provided a way to use your existing EF lenses on a Canon R body. Ultimately, Canon has discontinued lens support for EF lenses & no third party lens mount support for R cameras allowing alternative lens to be used factored into my decision to abandon the Canon ecosystem. The RF 70-200mm lens does NOT have the quality construction of the EF models & is an external zoom as opposed to an internal zoom. The RF 70-200mm also is NOT compatible with 1.4 or 2.0 telextenders. The Canon products that I did use served me well for many years. Cost became a significant factor for me in my decision to leave Canon.

    I had been a Nikon film shooter for close to 40 years when I changed to digital and tried Nikon and Canon equivalent models, the Canon just felt better in the hand, been with them ever since . 20D, 50D, 5Dii, 5Div, R5 and R7. My reasons for staying with the brand are exactly the same as yours. You could go from the 20D to the R5 without having a meltdown and the menu system although hugely bigger on the R5 would feel familiar. I agree on the dust it’s a pain especially in video so appreciate the lack of it , maybe the Canon shutters cover the sensor better than Sony. Apart from some of those RF small cheap(er) primes 16mm, 24mm, 50mm I’ve only ever got L glass (EF and RF) & I was very surprised how well my EF glass had held its value when I moved fully to RF.

    Funny that you mention the lens selection as a pro argument for Canon. If you are looking for good primes but don’t want the extremely big, heavy and expensive L options you are much better off with Sony or Nikon. That kept me from switching to Canon in the recent past. Good to hear about the other reasons because there is one single lens - the stereoscopic fisheye - that no other brand offers and that will finally make me a Canon shooter 😀

      Doch seit kurzem gibt es Fremdobjektive für APS-C, nutzbar für R7/R10/R100. Im übrigen würde fast niemand ein Glasscherbe von Sigma oder Tamron an eine R3/R5 montieren. Das wäre wie Perlen vor die Säue geworfen. Eine Kamera für mehr als 4000€ und ein billiges Objektiv von Sigma das schwer ist wie ein Ziegelstein und absolut unhandlich da zu groß! Das ist Quatsch!

    I agree about camera realibility and the cleanliness of the sensor, but some of the lenses from the 00s and 90s are pretty awful. Also the RF line is worse not only compared to Sony, but also compared to Nikon at the moment.
    I like canon for many things, but now they are turning into this greedy miser, now they are ready to do anything against their users, just to squeeze out a little profit:
    - They can remove the central contact so that if someone is looking for a small cheap camera for product shooting or studio work - they will look for it in the more expensive segment.
    - They don't allow third party manufacturers into RF bayonet mount in order to "keep all the profits in-house" as they put it.
    - at the same time, they have virtually no mid-range in their lens line. Either the 50 1.2 for $2000 or the 50 1.8 for $200. Their non-L line is pretty lousy, and even optically excellent lenses like the 85 2 are marred by poor construction or focus. Now almost all lenses from other manufacturers have moisture protection - but not from Canon, for Canon it is still an exclusive thing for the L-series
    - RF line is a mess. Canon is barely capable of making just a good lens anymore. Now it's some kind of field for experiments, and at the same time standards have gone south. They try to make wide wider, small smaller and can let the distortion go down to 10% in pursuit of this. Hell, they recently released the first ever uncorrected 35mm - it's pure underdesign, I don't know how to justify it. 35mm was never burdened with weight and didn't need miniaturization. Making such a lens with corrected distortion has never been a hard task.
    It's kinda hard to stay rational and being a canon user these days. Only the EF legacy saves us, for now. But it can't compete forever with everything that's happening on Nikon Z and Sony.

    • @RobHuntOutside
      @RobHuntOutside  2 місяці тому

      Thanks for the comments!
      As for the "greedy miser - doing anything against their users to squeeze out a little profit" - I honestly don't think this is the case. All of these camera makers have the same profit motives and they all have to make hard decisions on how they can remain profitable while they spend big money on R&D. The competitive landscape is really tough in this photography game so you can't screw over your users. Canon is early in their RF development so they are in a difficult position. It will take quite some time to get their new lens lineup to the level of their EF lenses, but they will get there. But for now, there are certainly holes in the lineup and shortcomings.
      One other thing I would say regarding the RF lenses and 3rd party manufacturers - these new lenses are much more complex than the old lenses. The body and lens are now operating in a much more integrated, and thus complex, way than they were in the past and for this reason I think Canon has concerns about user experience being negative if something isn't working right. In other words, if a third party lens is causing problems because they have a design flaw, Canon does not want this to reflect on them negatively and thus they are going to be really careful on this. I think they are right to go slow in this area.
      I have a few RF lenses and they are all great - I'm very impressed actually. All that being said, I'm very impressed with everything that's going on with Nikon and Sony (and others too) - I think anyone choosing to go those directions will most certainly be happy. We live in a time of ultimately good choices all around us in this field!

    • @dima1353
      @dima1353 2 місяці тому

      @@RobHuntOutside What you said about Canon being concerned about everything working well sounds exactly like what a Canon representative might say, although in one of their last interviews they were more honest than that and said outright that it was about profit. And it never affected the camera manufacturer's reputation. How long did we live with Sigmas, which almost always had problems with focus? We never said that it is a 6d or 5D3 were to blame. It's always been a sigma problem.
      Besides, these same sigmas on the RF mount have now received a second life. You can take the most problematic 35 1.4 ART copy and put it on the RP and it will hit the eye perfectly. So I do not believe in this thesis twice.
      About "Canon is early in their RF development" - RF mount is already 6 years old. For Sony FE mount it is a distance between introduction of original A7/A7r and A7R IV. In 6 years they have managed to reconsider their approach to high-end lenses, getting rid of those terrible Zeiss lenses in favor of the G-Master. They also managed to make many great mid-range lenses, like the 85 1.8 and 35 1.8 with protection and good focus, but they also did not prevent other manufacturers from filling this segment. In 6 years, Sony FE-mount has become close to abundance. So I can't see any excuses for canon here.

      Well they’ve all got the same profit motives I think. Canon certainly isn’t the cheapest, so there is that. Nikon is great too so I don’t think you’ll be unhappy with the move. I don’t really see the greed thing though - competition is really tough so I think all the big brands are putting out the most they can afford at a given price point. They have to make a lot of decisions behind the scenes to put a good product out there that the users they are targeting will like.

    Big CON of owning Canon cameras is that they are not loyal to any mount from the FD to EF to EF-M which are all dead and now to RF. How long will RF last before they force blind loyalists to buy the latest and greatest new mount?

      Canon used their EF lens mount for 33 years, from its introduction in 1987 until 2020. And you can still use all of your EF lenses on their mirrorless RF mount with a simple adapter which I use myself and am quite happy with - it works perfectly. These lens mounts have to change eventually as technology evolves. Nikon also had to change their classic F mount to the new mirrorless Z mount for the same reason. The Canon RF mount will be in play for many years to come.

      @@RobHuntOutsideon a bigger note, I do agree with your reasons having used Canon starting with the A1. However, Canon is now like Toyota. They are living on their reputation and brand loyalists. Toyota was once know for their reliability and quality and now they are a train wreck in that regard. I don't think Canon is nearly as good as Sony/Nikon in 2024. Their last two releases seem like they are playing catch up and have a love affair with 24 mpx cameras. I think they make 7 of them now. Only one high resolution camera and it's not even in an integrated body with with a proper battery. That's unacceptable. I can't continue to give them more of my money if they don't offer products that compete. We as consumers need to hold these companies to the fire. Too many of us are blind loyalists who just buy the newest offering even when we know it's disappointing. It's tough to move on but sometimes we are left with no options.
