Soldier mains explaining how their class is the one that needs the most skill because Rocket jumping is hard, just ignore the whole thing about shooting at the ground
fun fact, due to the way reflects are coded, a reflected direct hit rocket does not inherit the splash radius penalty built into the weapon, so a reflected DH rocket has the same splash radius as stock, making aiming your reflect near the feet a viable strategy.
@@NareasPLNo, it retains it's normal speed + dmg stats. It has something to do with how reflecting with airblast interacts with rockets in the code, returning all rockets from the DH to their stock explosion radius. It's a bunch of complicated source-spaghetti, thats all I know.
It's a weapon ownership issue. Rockets don't have any data on how big their splash should be, it just looks it up from the weapon that fired it. When reflecting it, it gets set to your flamethrower. Similar issues affect pipe self-damage (turns very high because the flamethrower has a very high damage stat, despite not being used for its flame damage calculations), and cow mangler fire damage takes the degreaser's penalty
Reflecting is not about sight. It's about syncronizing the enemy's reaction to your reaction. You need to feel the Soldier's brain pressing the trigger. You also need to feel him NOT pressing the trigger to try to confuse you. 4:04 is super true. Direct Hit is by far the easiest one to reflect and hit. Because with the other rockets, you have to take distance into consideration, DH is mostly just about reaction time.
protecting my medics is one of my top priorities whenever i'm playing pyro. medics are the glue of the team, as long they're alive the team is alive, the circle of life
Another really good tip that I don’t think you mentioned is that when fighting demomen, try getting them into a pattern. What I like to do is that I dodge the first pipe, then they usually fire the second one immediately after and you can use instinct to reflect the second pipe. I’ve recently started using this and it works so well against all types of demomen. Still without the part I mentioned, I did learn some good stuff from you 😊! Thank you! ❤
I do know the benefits of the degreaser, but I just prefer stock tbh. I love the classic look of the stock flamethrower over the degreaser, despite not relying on after burn the 3 extra tick damage still a nice benefit to have, and honestly I’m just too used to stock switch speed where it’s easier for me to hit flare punches with stock compared to the degreaser lol. But regardless of that your well formatted guide had given me some much needed insight that will help me out, so I’m quite thankful for this remake. Glad to see ya finally uploading again!
I definitely understand the part of the looks, I love the Backburner, it looks so sick, and I like to fool soldiers into thinking that I can't reflect shawt, plus flanking is a pretty funny business.
It's been 37 years.... Seriously tho, as a pyro main, this guide is really good for newbies. Pretty much so all of this myself but you managed to put it in a really clear way.
I've talked about this with my other pyro main friends but playing pyro vs soldier is like a fighting game, the way you have to consider spacing, neutral game, pushing advantage, and reading your opponent really makes it play out SO differently from almost any other FPS game fight
I feel like the important thing about learning reflect jumps is that good sollies will decide not to shoot directly at you but to the side of you so that it's harder to reflect into them. So you reflect jump into their face and force them into that fight.
I've been on the edge of consistent airblast-level pyro for a hot minute now. Thank you for this updated guide, this is extremely helpful! Welcome back, by the way :)
This came at such a good time! I've been watching your previous guide again and again recently to add some mental notes for myself to prepare for a project that I want to do next year, and this is even better! Great video with good presentation, keep it up!
The king is back! Couldn't thank you enough for how useful your videos have been to me as a new Pyro main for almost a year now. I would just not be where I am at right now without your videos. Maybe this will motivate me to finish some of my Pyro videos that have been stuck in editing hell these past few months! 😆
I got back into TF2 like three days ago as of writing this, and this video actually helps me to understand why i'm struggling. There's just so much happening, but i'm trying to play it safe. I'm gonna have to learn how to actually go in and engage. The three main classes i'm interested in are Pyro, Demo, and Engie. Pyro largely due to the airblast, so i' hoping this video helps.
A good method I want to share when it comes to reflecting rockets, is to wait until you see the orange/yellow blaze trail the rocket makes. As Sir Andrew Prescott said on the battle of bunker hill: “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes”. But in terms of tf2 it’s “Don’t air blast until you see the orange of their rockets”
i don't like fighting the airstrike because i can barely see it. but other than that, great guide! you touched on all the relevant reflectable weapons that can be tricky to reflect and how to properly counter them (let's not talk about the loose cannon). i also love that you included the dragon's fury, that's *my* favourite projectile to reflect because people just don't expect it keep it up!
YEEEES!! im so glad you're back!! im a huge fan of pyro and their playstyle and your videos have helped me plenty to play them better, so thank you very much!
I haven't played TF2 in years now, but the fun of airblasting projectiles lives on in my username. It's honestly such a satisfying and skillful mechanic. Those are some great tips and clips you have there! Some of those reflects were borderline NASTY. Awesome video!
oh btw, you mentioned using q for switching between weapons, and after trying to use 3 weapons with such strategy it's quite hard, so I've decided to change the control scheme shift - primary space - secondary w - melee q - 4th slot esdf - movement [instead of wasd] caps - crouch mouse4 / mouse5 - jump 2 3 4 5 - engi buildings [binds] and you know, it took like 1 week to relearn, maybe less than a week to completely relearn but after that I could always easely switch between any amount of weapons without ever awkwardly switching to the wrong thing [that happens a lot with q] people should probably try this more, it won't take away the muscle memory, but you will gain a lot of advantages.
Thanks for all the pyro vids! I’ve been going through a bunch of your videos and really enjoy them, helped me try out classes other than medic since I last played in like 2012. Also shout outs to the Ace Attorney OST in the videos, love that series.
It surprises me that sticky's are hard to air blast because I can air blast them in the air just fine and I play on uncle servers with 90hs of game play and only 8 out of the 90 hours I have played pyro. Btw I love watching videos like these they really help me like sense I'm a spy main (who also plays pyro and engi time to time) I watch Mr. Paladin's how a spy thinks series and this helps me so much because I have recently gotten into playing pyro more and more I play so I wanted to express my thanks to content creators like you Pirateer for how much you help inform not just me but the entire internet. Keep up the good work👍.
Man the funnest thing as Soldier is fighting a really good Pyro and consistently beating them, gonna definitely keep these tricks in mind when I fight Pyros :D
I found playing dodgeball helped me with airblasting. Especially when there's people on the other team who love to send direct rockets at me. It helps with learning speed and distance combinations. Plus it's fun and very satisfying when you miss the first reflect of a very fast rocket and have to frantically orb it and reflect it back to the enemy that didn't expect you to handle it.
This is obvious but it's worth noting that reflecting is much harder and less consistent the higher your ping is. My ability to reflect becomes noticeably worse above 80 ping and at 100 ping I often miss reflects I would usually hit.
Agree on Degreaser being a superior option for learning airblast: i always took care of how much ammo i have left so that i can either risk an airblast in order to get ammo from reflect kill or continue with m1. If i fail, i die, i respawn, i repeat until i score one. After learning reflect, i just got back to Stock since it has more ammo, and sometimes switch do combo with Degreaser if i feel lucky
7:50 Incredibly the gass passer fits well when you have a supportive m2 playstyle, you can focus on your around after thowring it for support fire to allies or combo.
I've been playing a lot of Pyro lately trying to get good at reflecting, and watching this feels like hearing someone spell out the fuzzy, half-formed ideas in the back of my mind.
Just got to 300h on pyro, reflecting soldiers is way easier than demos. Demo reflects hare hard so i hope this video helps! Also glad to see youre back :)
It's very hard I personally find it tough to play pyro above around 130 ping Tips: predict reflects, don't react (you'll miss because of the ping), play more at medium range, use shotgun secondary so you have a hitscan weapon (less affected by ping)
I have a lot of respect for Pyro players that can reflect. I really tried to learn and get good at it, but it just never clicked for me, I think the biggest issue is that I can't really get a grip of the hitbox I'm dealing with and trying to do that and aim at the same time is really hard. The few times I did get a kill with it, felt amazing. I hope Valve encourage the reflect play style with Pyro more as I think it dispels a lot of bad stereotypes that comes with Pyro.
I find Stock Flamethrower so comparably strong that I keep it in hand almost exclusively, making weapon swap time feel less relevant. Det jumping doesn't really need extra frames, and Puff + Sting struggles to kill with Degreaser afterburn. Those are my favorite weapons, BUT for shotgun pyro I gotta have degreaser to feel useful.
Hey Pirateer! I have been working on a pyro guide for about the past month or so and I was wondering if I could recommend viewers in check out some of yours? Also glad to see you back! You've been a huge reason my pyro skill ceiling has gone up

It aint that deep (or is it)
As demo main, perhaps the distance helps? It does for me at least, can’t reflect Direct Hit rockets for the life of me
as a Medic, I can't imagine being so fortunate as to have a Pybro to keep demomen off me. I'd be immeasurably grateful.

you need to go to this on game banana pyro punches instead of using his flame thrower to air blast Kylul's Pyro Animation Pack + ULTRAPYRO Airblast

Learning how to consistently reflect arrows and repair claws gave me immense pride as a kid to finally learn something hard as shit on a game
oh btw, you mentioned using q for switching between weapons, and after trying to use 3 weapons with such strategy it's quite hard, so I've decided to change the control scheme
shift - primary
space - secondary
w - melee
q - 4th slot
esdf - movement [instead of wasd]
caps - crouch
mouse4 / mouse5 - jump
2 3 4 5 - engi buildings [binds]
and you know, it took like 1 week to relearn, maybe less than a week to completely relearn
but after that I could always easely switch between any amount of weapons without ever awkwardly switching to the wrong thing [that happens a lot with q]
