By the time of this video, 7 years prior, she had already won both the Geneva and Busoni competitions (3 weeks apart), 1st prize in both at the age of 16! (they don't allow pianists to compete at that age now) Then after failing to study with Horowitz, she took a 3-year hiatus from the piano and decided to not pursue a piano career! The wife of her old piano teacher, Askensae persuaded her to prepare and enter this most prestigious competition. In which she won, again, 1st prize. No kidding, here is the pianist of all pianists and she still rules at the top of her profession at age 81! Having survived cancer twice, the second time was nothing short of a miracle. We are in the presence of a goddess!

I used to have a friend who used to fancy her like mad. Looking at her in this I can see why. I have heard it said (by learned persons) that she is the greatest living pianist. She certainly has a wonderful technique.
She was immensely attractive. I saw her play the Grieg piano concerto at the Brangwyn Hall, Swansea in the sixties. A young raven haired beauty at the piano. On a radio broadcast over fifty years ago, I heard another great pianist, Julius Katchen, describe his young colleague as "A kind of sexy angel".
6:15 onwards and I’m dying. So good! I never heard this scherzo being played so effortlessly while each note and phrase keeps its meaning to the fullest.
It's a very rare video. The video of Archerich participating in the Chopin Competition. I can't help but be surprised. Even now, her performance, which is still sophisticated and colorful, is probably ahead of its time. The way she plays the piano is so beautiful.

The end of this piece especially is such a majestic work of music, one of Chopin’s best, though currently I love his Opus 44 Polonaise, the mazurka part in the middle is just enchanting. Such a genius. If he had lived more than 39 years who knows what he would have brought to this world. Our loss.

Aside from being one of the very greatest pianists of our time, she us very intelligent and has led an interesting life. Fortunately, there are a few extended interviews with her on Yourtube.
It's laughable to think that there were judges sitting there when she could play immeasurably better than each one of them! Does it really get better than this?! Her technique,in particular the octaves,was just perfect then.A great example for young pianists(and not-so-young!)to try and emulate. Zimerman is another one who does everything absolutely correctly.It's a pity there are no visual recordings of Lipatti.😊

Prior to this, Martha Argerich had not played piano for three years and had only returned to the piano for 6 months. Also, a year prior to this, she got pregnant by her friend Robert Chen; married him and shortly divorced him; then returned to her domineering mother in Geneva, where she gave birth to her first daughter. And yet, she still found the time to win the Chopin competition at age 24… again, all within one year. If that’s not talent, I don’t know what is. She truly is the queen of the piano!

Martha and Yuga are just generational pianists. I think I have been given a great gift/blessing just watching and hearing them perform. At least in Arthur Rubinsteins view this is the hardest Chopin piece. The maestro admitted he had to practise a lot for it. Young Martha is still in her comfort zone here. Guess she just could play anything at that age and still have reserves.

In the chorale section and the right hand playing not obvious notes but like a light rain.

At least in Arthur Rubinsteins view this is the hardest Chopin piece. The maestro admitted he had to practise a lot for it. Young Martha is still in her comfort zone here. Guess she just could play anything at that age and still have reserves.
Rachmaninov got more "dislikes" for this piece, but I strongly recommend to listen to him.
