      +davidthmovies True, but if you have very little room to spare, it is not easy for a beginner to do it safely. You wouldn't let a learner driver do the M25, would you?

    holy shit. that boat was OBVIOUSLY not going to fit. They strolled right in to it like there was never a doubt. And 0:53 is she seriously trying to PULL the boat back while standing ON the boat. That explains this whole incident.

    There is a big notice on hire boats which states"Under NO circumstances should you attempt to take this boat under Potter Heigham Bridge, you must use the bridge pilot" many people ignore it and most come to grief. lol

    My wife and I lived near here, that is the bridge at Potter Higham, we used to go there with a picnic and watch the fools crash into the bridge,, made a nice day out for us!! You are not allowed to take any rented or hire boats under the bridge now ,, you HAVE to let the local pilot take it through!

    • @G1NZOU
      @G1NZOU 4 роки тому

      I think you can technically go through without a pilot, but you're responsible for any damage if you mess up. Smaller boats like day cruisers and sailing cabin yachts can usually go through just fine without needing a pilot since it's obvious they'll fit, but taller and wider boats have more issues with clearance so a pilot is advised.

      Miss Betty - if this is true, then you, or someone, should see to it that a bar with hanging tubes if fitted in front of the bridge. They would make a terrible clatter when a boat hit them, but cause no damage, and save untold tens of thousands of pounds over the years. But wait ... that's intelligent thinking. Far better just to let people go on making mistakes and laughing at them .... What good 'ol people you Nofolk folk are.

    • @g0fvt
      @g0fvt 6 років тому +1

      I believe in this case they were warned, there is only so much you can do to save people from themselves. This bridge is only a few minutes from where I live and is well known for the lack of clearance yet year after year people crash boats into it. All the more money for the local economy....

      Toy Toy - If it’s their own boat they should have hired a pilot to get them under, and if it’s a hire boat you’re not allowed to take it under without a pilot.

  • @G1NZOU

    Only time I've ever had a mishap with that bridge is once when we were sailing a yacht with no engine, we had to quant up to the bridge and of course there's not enough room for the quant pole while you're directly under the arch, so you have to get enough momentum, unfortunately the tide was moving upriver quite strongly and we only got halfway through before the tide slowed us down and forced us back again.
    Had to wait for the tide to start turning before we attempted again but everything went smoothly.

    I have been through there with a friends boat, it is a scary experience even when you know the dimensions of the craft. Fortunately I did not have a mishap, and even more fortunately it did not get recorded and uploaded to UA-cam. When I have hired larger boats I stick to the rules and leave it to the bridge pilot. Going through the bridges where there are often strange currents you need to go through at high power in order to retain control, the boat will also sit lower as the prop pushes water from under the boat. I am not an experienced boat pilot but am learning all the time, this family probably ruined their holiday with just one bad decision..

    • @G1NZOU
      @G1NZOU 3 роки тому

      Maybe, although I recognise what side of the bridge that is, on the other side there's only a relatively short stretch of river, Hickling Broad, Martham Broad, Horsey Mere and a single boatyard, everyone that lives or has a boat mooring the other side of this bridge knows exactly how low Potter Heigham bridge is.
      It's far more likely they're from this side of the bridge and hadn't gone through it before alone, and didn't want to pay the pilot's fee to take them through.

    I love the way the woman stands on the bathing platform & tries to pull the boat backwards, then jumps up & down! Bet she was fit by the end of the holiday. As usual, it was some know-it all bloke at the helm & some poor woman (who would probably have preferred a beach holiday) tasked with getting them out of the fix. To be fair, that is a notorious bridge: which is why they have pilot station beside it.

    Can't fix stupid. Ignored advice. No life jackets. Jumping up and down may have given them some exercise, but wouldn't work on a row boat, let alone that one. The only way that boat is going under the bridge is to wait for the tide to go out or to take on balist to lower the boat (like letting the air out of the tires.) Outside of that it is eather a hax saw or the jaws of life.
