Coach Nick got on the court with Jeremy Lin's shooting coach Doc Sheppler, and his protege Ryan Brice (instagram: ryan_br_ice23) to demonstrate some lethal triple threat techniques.
Some of these things might seem radical, but you'll quickly see why they're so explosive and hard to guard. If you want to improve your perimeter game, these techniques will help you.

"Are you the best shooter?"
"Yes sir I am"
*drops ball
Haha
+Cal A That's why he's a shooter not a ball handler.

We got on the court to demonstrate some *CUTTING EDGE SCORING TECHNIQUES* with Jeremy Lin's Shooting Coach.
I have no doubt some of these things will be new to you, and they will help your game get to the next level with an added level of quickness and explosiveness you didn't know you had.

Nice!
A sweep through into and open step attack off the dribble can be difficult. Especially for us Americans. For some reason it gets ignored in American basketball. That's a travel. But hey, they won't call in on American soil! Lol
Yes - you couldn't do this in Europe... perhaps I'll get a European coach on the show to demonstrate how they do it...
It's a rarely used attack move. As you know, euro ball is mostly about getting the defense out of position then swinging the ball to find a good shot. That creates situations where players have to close out pretty much out of control to try and chase the shooter off of the 3 pt line. In that case, if the shooter pulls back and decides to put the ball on the floor, a great percentage of the time, a right-handed shooter will crossover step and go to his left to remain squared to the basket. Avoiding the open step attack. Attacking off of the dribble from a triple threat position, without a ball screen rarely happens.
At least attacking to score.
This guy used to be my shooting coach, and he improved my shot a ton. He coaches the best girl's basketball team in the state. They are ridiculous! All of the girls shoot absurd percentages from 3.
Anyone notice his sound effects? Lol "catch and drive.. Whoo"
Thanks for being in the conversation! Lots more coming up!
Coach Nick, can you make a video on simple plays or strategies that will greatly improve your pick up game level?
Stay tuned- I'm working on lots of interviews/on court demonstrations with different players...
Awesome. Keep us updated on your progress!
We will have a breakdown of the release, so stay tuned.
That said, you don't want it "next to" your head. It should above your right eyebrow, basically. That said, guys like Steve Nash shoot with the ball almost in front of their face...
These are great tips for amateur players wanting to hone their skills since these are basic moves especially for shooters. But I feel its also important to note how to avoid travelling. A lot of players do imitate these simple but effective moves but a lot also end up travelling.
This will really help me in tryouts. Love the videos!
This is really an awesome vid guys, you have no idea how much these simple things are helping me get to a higher level, keep being AWESOME !!
None of this is accurate to Jeremy Lin's game. First off... Jeremy Lin never spends a half a second in "triple threat". If he's got that kind of time, he shoots or finds a drive. Second, Jeremy Lin is a right-handed, left-first threat. Lin's "triple threat is similar to Hardens (in that he starts off with a dribble through the legs to his off-hand and checks what the defense is giving him). Lin's offhand is his left. He dribbles through his legs to his left and if he's given enough space, he takes the shot (mirror image Harden). If the defense closes in, Lin drives left (right foot first). If he's beat to the left, he's got his right foot in position for the spin move and he can get close to the basket where he either finishes or encounters help D (in which case he threatens the hoop and dishes when he picks up the second defender.) Also, you made no mention of what should be considered almost a Lin trademark (but he's better known for his driving). This is when Lin is driving right (second option) and the defense is good, he'll stop on his left, dribble through the legs to his off hand, step back and put up a super fast mid-range jumper. Lin has possibly the quickest full-drive to stepback jumper in the league (but nobody seems to know it).
As a matter of fact, you didn't show Lin doing anything that you demonstrated, but almost all of these things were shown in your footage... I don't get it. Lin has one of the simplest offensive move-packs there is... but you still decided to make one up that isn't even close to what Lin does.
I'm surprised this is Lin's shooting coach. You'd figure he'd know (of all people) that Lin does zero of these things in his game.
Another great vid, coach I utilized the triple threat last night in combination with a slow to fast crossover which tends to put the defender to sleep for a short period of time giving the offensive player the window to either blow by or step back a get space to shoot.
That's awesome. Keep me updated if you use some more of these things...
You can also check videos of Pro Shot Shooting System. It helped me a lot, and I've been playing basketball since I was 5. I'm 22 now, and I've never had such a good stroke.
Thanks!!! Lots more coming up, stay tuned.
Great Video Coach Nick, you should host a camp in the Commonwealth of Dominica, that would be great for our Basketball players including myself
Great idea... we'll get it on the list!!
I love these videos. Please keep them coming!
Interesting that Sheppler suggests keeping the non-pivot foot back. I was taught to have it in front to begin with, closer to a shooting stance. I like how this position gives more explosiveness to the first step, and will give it a go. Another thing I learned from the hop-catch is that it potentially opens up using either foot as a pivot, which could confuse defenders. Thanks Coach!
Another addition to your euro step :)
Let's hope you get an on-court demonstration with Tony Parker too! I love your video breakdowns of TP's game.
I'm pretty happy with this video. I've seen Jeremy's coach in his documentary, and if he's good enough to coach Jeremy Lin, he's good enough to coach me.
Check out rocket's game today jeremy lin went off the three point line
What do you think of Lin coming off the bench for the Rockets? His shooting percentages are better and I think he is more aggressive coming off the bench. With Harden on the floor, Lin becomes a stand up shooter. Lin showed more command of the court when Harden was out. On a side note, I have watched film on Harden and Harden defense is one of the worst I have seen. Harden either has lack of effort or just is not aware the location of players on the court. I was in shock to see how many times he was blown away.
this was great! thanks for these nick!!!
This was a great one! Keep it up.
Great content. Seriously grade A stuff that I will immediately try to implement in my game.
Well, it's a technique you can use. I'm all about the hop, but I did like how he used that non pivot foot to fake the shot
It'd be awesome if you could do a team breakdown of the Celtics seeing as they only seem to have Rondo and their new center now. Such as: where the points will be coming from, and how they will rebuild their team.
Awesome, thanks! You gonna work on this stuff?
YES JEREMY LIN
lol i saw this in my youtube feed and was pretty surprised that it wasnt uploaded by jeremy.. since im subbed to him too
I thought that's what they said at the beginning. Passing can free yourself up to either move without the ball and get open to catch and shoot, or your teammates to score. So even if it included passing it could still be a scoring secret.
That will be Houston's big challenge, is getting Lin and Harden to co-exist together. I think Harden will have to sacrifice about 8% of his pick and rolls to Lin, and McHale should play Lin when Harden is resting even more
This "conversation" deserves more subscribers
i think whoever disliked this video does not look to improve as a basketball player or they dont like to learn different nuances of the game. Just because its jeremy Lins scoring secrets doesnt take away from the effectiveness of them. Hes a pro this is what they do.
Best basketball videos right here!
wow amazing video can't wait to try this out on the court. Thanks for the great info.
I miss the homie Lin in NY..
Claims to be best shooter in the country.
*Misses almost every wide open 3
😂😂😂
good video especially the head placement part
I mean he may have been JLin's coach, but this serves as a nice explanation of Carmelo Anthony's entire game. Best scorer out of the midrange triple threat in the game.
nice vid coach! thanks for sharing it with us
Oh Boy! I can't wait till the season starts!
This was an awesome video :) shame I don't play basketball that much any more. But I'll keep this in mind
Great video! do you guys have any material about shooting of the dribble with the hop?
This is the new triple threat- things have evolved, my man.
Hey, Coach if you like seeing amazing footwork you should check out Dimitris Diamantidis of Panathinaikos Athens. Also can we have a Hakeem footwork breakdown?
Coach Nick can you do a training regime for shooting like 100 jump shoots 50 hooks 50 layups etc and importance of alot of reps and form
Yes - you need to get the ball on the ground before the pivot foot comes off the ground.
hey coach, can you make sure your cameraman actually records the jumpshot go in, because he didn't do it in this video, or in the NBA jump shooting secrets video either
The hop has all kinds of advantages for the catch and shoot. But there is simply no way to get around the fact that when you land on both feet with a hop and and have your weight evenly distributed on both feet, you are in a far less effective position to drive or pass than in the 1-2 where you have your weight primarily on one leg. When any athlete -- a sprinter, football player or basketball player -- is trying to get into a good position to sprint forward, the fact is the best biomechanical position for this is to have your weight primarily on one leg/foot. In sum: With the 1-2 you will be a bit slower to get the shot off; in the hop you will be slower to drive towards the hoop and/or to get an effective pass off. Both types of footwork have drawbacks and strengths, and the best players will find ways to apply the strengths of BOTH in accordance with the specific situation. If you have made up your mind before the catch that you will shoot (i.e. you are in high percentage range and are sure you have the space), then hop. However, if before catching the ball you are not sure and/or you need to CREATE space, then the 1-2 will be a better option. Thought of in this way, I believe the most effective offensive players will use the hop 20%-30% of the time off the catch and use the 1-2 70%-80% of the time. Because the truth is that most of the time you are better off either driving, passing or you are not sure and the 1-2 is going to be best in those situations.
I like coach Nick better on the court than in the studio--seems more relaxed
Stay tuned for this one!!
great stuff coach!!!
Remember, the lay-up is a much higher percentage shot than a jumper. The 1-2 will place you in a far better position to sprint towards the basket than the hop. So, using the hop exclusively may ultimately lower your overall shooting percentage and effectiveness as a scorer. In my view, exclusive use of the hop will make your game more one dimensional (jump-shooter) by subtracting from some aspects of your game such as the drive, the pass and fakes (drive and shot fakes). I think the best coaches are going to get past the either-or mentality and figure out ways to empower players with both options.
***** You make good points, in respect to some situations. I think the use of the hop or 1-2 should be situational. It depends on the angle and speed when you make the catch. Severe angle and slow, hop could be better. Small angle or fast on severe angle, 1-2 better.
You can also hop into a split step when your defender is closing out. Need to drill it a lot though.
Well, I'll be back in the area in November!
Coach Nick actually found JLin's talents during the summer league back in 2010
"I'm the best shooter in the country and I miss 90% of the shots in this video." I hate to be that guy but cmon man.
Felix Hamilton Gotta have that mentality anyway. Swagger and confidence helps.
Vulapa true
10% from the three, I'm guessing he aint a 3 point player lol.
I mean you're the expert, but when Linsanity was going strong he was very entertaining and had around 5 straight 22pts+ games including a 38 pts game and a game winner, all while shooting over 57%. He was a fantastic player, better than Felton in my opinion. One argument that makes me want to coincide with you is the fact that Lin turned the ball over way too much.
i am not following very closely after the season ended...
but from what i've seen last season, i dont see Lin will be a significant threat to the opposing team with Harden ballhogging whole game (if you dislike the word ballhog, you can swap it with "harden playing #24 offense whole game")
I think what's important about Lin's game is that these are moves anybody can master, no matter your athletic ability....
I think he's going to get as good a shot in Houston as anywhere. Harden just needs to take a few less PnRs himself, and then McHale should play Lin a few minutes when Harden is on the bench.
I think they've gotten similar, if not better, production from Felton...
Coach, what is your take on Lin's starting position?
Will the Rockets be better by benching him????????????
Great question - perhaps breakdown worthy... ?
Great content coach
Thanks coach!
coach nick please do a breakdown on how to defend one on one
When demonstrating and slowing it down, I can see why the rip through to drive would look like a travel. But Doc stresses getting the ball down on the ground before the back foot comes up.
Great stuff coach
These vids are great....
great tips, great video
Appreciate it coach
coach nick, that's pinewood high school in los altos hills right? they're in my league for basketball. you should come to our school and do a workout video with my teammates and me.
idont see jeremy lin.
Keep us updated on how it works for you!!! #ImIn
Coach one question.. Where should I release the ball? In front of my body, or next to my head?
hey i've played @ pinewood during my highschool jv season! it's annoying to drive up there haha
Coach, for the triple threat position and when you pull a jumpshot, is your release of the jumpshot have to be high as seen from the video? If I have low release point on a jumpshot, will that be effective when I take a jumper from a triple threat position? My friend is telling me to elevate my release point since he tells me that I become more vulnerable of being blocked. Thanks Coach for the tips. This is a great breakdown for Jeremy Lin, sweet!
Sweet vid, that was pretty funny when he dropped the ball
@2:39 Coach, does this usually result as a travelling depending on how the ball started with the player?
Coch do an informational video on travelling and stuff. I have the feeling the NBA may have the same travelling rulles as FIBA but the refs just don't call it. I never if it's a travel and they just don't call it or if it's by the rules... It'd be great to hear your opinion and your insight on this.
very good video btw
Coach, it would be helpful if you show us how his hands looks like when he release the ball.
Melo's Jab Step - Pull Up is so deadly
Coach Nick,
can we have a video on what makes Curry shoot so well above the arc?
Coach Nick,i'm from Brazil, i have seen all your videos by a least 1 and half year (since How Dwight Howard beat Lebron in every play), I want to congratulate you for all your effort and progress, this channel is already one of the best, I'm IN !!
Don't mind him. Your videos are great!
For anyone that isn't aware, it's called triple-threat position because you can shoot, drive, or pass.
Yes
Hey Coach. I was wondering what school you coach at becuase I play for Agoura and it would be cool to play against you. Thanks!
I loved the on court instruction, but the clips inserted of Jeremy Lin had nothing to do with it.
For instance, Doc and Ryan would demonstrate moving from the ball from a hip pocket to the shot pocket, then the Lin clip would show Jeremy shooting a spot up catch and shoot.
Or the instruction would show a jab step then it would cut to a Jeremy Lin clip where he pulled up from a dribble and didn't use a jab step at all.
The Jeremy Lin highlights are cool, but they kinda don't fit.
I'm not entirely sure it is a travel. So long as the ball hits the floor at or before the time your pivot foot does, it's (I think) not a travel. In this particular video, it is *very* close, especially at full speed, so even (as you mentioned) if it's a travel by the book it should never be called.
What shoes are those? And good video.
hyperdunk 2012's
It's not that he has no market value. It's just that he chose to have lesser salary for a better chance of winning. If you can remember, Cavs offered him the same contract Kobe had per year. But he chose a lesser contract for a better chance at winning the gold. It was a matter of CHOICE. Not market value.
Should you practice this form at the FT line?
Great video
4:35 is classic Harden!
He could of said any other player, but I think he chose Lin because that was one of his early coaches if im not mistaken.
