Yeap. Beacouse of Henning 😂. Dude! Some comparisons reveal things so counterintuitive as far as sounds go. Nevertheless.... This is a great effort... Will revisit!
Thanks! I don’t think any of it is counterintuitive, it just goes against the common myths that we’re told by friends who were told by other friends and so on.... this should help settle a few arguments I’m sure
@@adamsteelproducer Amazing systematic work, really enlightening. The clean strat sound in my head has always been that alnico blue... oh the chime... So absolutely unforgiving. The fusion example with backing track is really transversal, because the overtones of the lead guitar can be dissonant and harsh, blend irrelevantly with the mix or make him sound like a guitar God. The next step is mix and match speakers in a 2x12, right? 26 times 26... 6hours... adds up roughly to a 169 day video. Just an idea....
I'm a speaker nerd and so happy I found this video. 6 hours, even if my wife and daughter do not agree, I will try my very best to do not miss a minute.
Properly done demo! How the speaker translates your guitar and amp into the complete mix is the most important aspect. Some speakers sound weird by themselves, but somehow sit in the mix perfectly.
This is awesome! I really think a lot of players under appreciate the role of the speaker as a determinant of their sound. I hope you get enough success from this video to justify the amount of work to do a shootout like this for other brands like WGS.

Great work!! They make/made a few for Hughes & Kettner. The Rockdriver Classic 60 and the Rockdriver jr. Do you happen to know what the equivalent of those speakers are?
Really love that you included the room mics in this shootout. It's amazing how consistently loud the 30w anniversary and the K-100s are across all ranges of gain, definitely would choose those to play live. Also, it's groundbreaking to finally HEAR the differences between 8ohm and 16ohm speakers, instead of just taking words for granted from specialists.
I purchased the Anniversary years ago after hearing it perform consistently well in shootouts. It sounds incredible in person. It just lets whatever amp you're running do its thing.
A little over 2 hours in...this is an incredible gold mine for tone chasers! Absolutely loving this video. Can't wait to finish it. Thanks for all the work you put into this. Would definitely watch a speaker "brand comparison" video in the future (hint hint lol) Keep up this incredible content. You gained another subscriber 🤘
That 10" VT JUNIOR is the Star of the show. Great full tone without being too boomy and leaves a ton of room for all the other instruments. Thanks for that amazing demo my man.
I love the copperback sound. It has a slightly higher frequency response than the others (goes up to 5500Hz instead of just 5000Hz), and doesn’t get muddy as quickly as other speakers when I use loads of effects with it. Not to mention I can throw absolutely any amp at it and it will never be overwhelmed.
Remarkable video man big props! The only thing I would have wished for is to have a Alnico Silver Bell speaker in here for comparison. Otherwise perfectly done!!
This is nuts, in the best possible way. Henning sent me as well. And I am actually going to use it (tiny bits of it anyway). Thank you, you crazy person you. Overwhelming.
Great video and a lot of effort to make it scientifically correct in comparisons. I do have to say that the heat explanation is much different than what I have seen and been taught when it comes to speakers First off, there is no friction in the voice coil. No parts rub together. LOL. There is an air gap. When rubbing does occur, the speaker is toast. The heat does not come from friction. It comes from too much power going through too small of gauge wire. When more voltage is used, thicker wire is required. You can get more voltage through a thinner wire with cooling, hence the screen that lets air go through the voice coil. What happens when a wire gets hot is the insulation material on the wire melts off and the winding is shorted. The voltage no longer has to travel all the way through the entire length of wire that is wrapped on the coil. It just found a short cut to the end of the wire via the short circuit. Not only does this put an uneven magnetic field in the voice coil, it changes the impedance. depending on how much wire is taken out of the short cut this can vary. It always lowers the impedance. !6 ohm speakers have more wire and therefore more wraps. Lowering the impedance causes all kinds of issues. If your amp has an 8 ohm speaker output and you hook up a 4 ohm speaker, it draws more power from the amp. This can and will damage the amp with prolong usage this way. If you hook up a 2 ohm speaker, the load on the amp is increased even more and it will fail even sooner. Shorts in the voice coil do this. They reduce the impedance and the amp sees a much lower ohm speaker and sends even more voltage through the already under rated wire gauge and the heat is multiplied with it. The under rated wire in the voice coil gets very hot. Think light bulb filament. And that is not even mentioning what is going on in the amp, I believe mainly in the output transformer, having to try and push more voltage than it is rated for, hence the same phenomena going on in the windings there. Heat is a bad thing. In speakers and amps.
Jesus, this is insane. Even through iPad speakers, differences are pretty obvious. Absolutely incredible work putting this together. So much to learn, which is what Adam and Hop Pole as a channel have become known for. Just an outstanding resource and excellently delivered.
Amazing video.Been spending time in Impulse Responses and this has helped me think about other speaker options outside of my favorites m creamback, m greenbacks and v30s for my modelr. Will eventually pull the trigger on a zilla 2x12 creamback + greenback combo which I feel would compliment each other (unless you recommend other combo for classic/alt rock). Thanks for making the time investment on this video.
There are quite a few standouts here. the T75 is both full and piercing trebley and combines so well with the Marshalls, but also with the Twin. Disappointed with how it sounds with the Revv. the H30 Anniversary is both so well rounded and just so in your face! If I had to pick only one speaker it would be that. All the Creambacks including the Alnico sounded great in all the clips. the Alnico Gold, V Type, Redback and the 35XC combined so well with the Twin Reverb but not with the rest of the amps. the Century Vintage and Neo Copperback didn't sound good with the Marshalls but I liked how it sounds with the rest of the amps. the Hempback sounds great in the Twin and would be perfect for blending in the rest of the amps! V30 sounds interesting in the Twin Reverb! Prefered the 16ohm on the Twin but the 8ohm with the Marshalls and the Revv All the 10" speakers but especially the G10 Vintage were my least favorites, followed up by the A Type, Classic Lead 80, K100 and Fullback from my IRL experience and in the room the T75 is my favorite and the A Type is my least favorite to work with
After listening to this, I still have to say my favourite speakers are the Alnico Blue, and the G12H30. Love them both. Thanks for what looks like months of work, mate!
Awesome video! I was very surprised at some of the sounds. I use vintage 30's and g12h creambacks. I really really like the hemp back! never heard of that speaker before. Think it will pair really well with my creamback or lynchback. Killer killer work by you and all the guitarists you brought together.
It seems to always come back to the clarity of the greenbacks no matter what they are up against… I guess EQing for exact tone is still where it’s at… appreciate the insane amount of work this took guys
I don't know if I will listen to the whole video, But I think we should appreciate what he has done. Great job Adam, what a massive undertaking. Congrats on putting together the recording, editing, mixing, and bringing the talent together to take this challenge on. Keep up the great work.
57:30 ish, Jimi Hendrix changed from 25w celestions to 30w celestion (G12H30 55hz "Bass cone" speakers) speakers for that reason (power handling). He kept blowing the others up. Thanks for a great video, I'm going to have to watch this one in 1hr instalments over the next couple of days I believe!
@@adamsteelproducer 30w GBs were out when Hendrix was alive, also having a 100w cab doesn't necessarily prevent your speakers from crapping out when the amp is 100w RMS, it puts out more wattage than that when it's dimed (or close to).
I believe you’re confusing the timeline a little though, the “100” on the cabinet and the 25W heavy greens were at the time Hendrix was using the H magnets to stop them blowing, and later they were upgraded to 30W. Hendrix was indeed still alive, but his reasoning for using the heavy magnets had already occurred years previously. And whilst it’s possible to put more than 100W rms out of a 60s plexi, the multimeters will show that’s rarer than you think. Also Hendrix was using full stacks and chaining amps together and still blowing the older 20W greenbacks!

Hi. Brilliant video. Thanks for making it. A-type, V-type and V30 were my favourites. Questions: 1. What about showing a 8ohm tap to 16 ohm speaker result? eg: this happens to Mesa head owners sometimes having to run through a 16ohm cab. 2. Do 2x 8ohm speakers in serial in a cab produce the same result as a 16 ohm speaker, eg: the additional brightness? 3. Why no 70/80 tested? 4. and curious what Celestion is the Mesa branded speaker closest to in Celestion range? Regards and thanks again for the herculean effort.
Hi there! I really appreciate your effort on this. SO, I have an old Carvin cab that came with these speakers that aren't made anymore. Celestion G12s 50w. From the 90s. I think they sound a lot like Twisted Sister's "Stay Hungry" album. But of course JJ French denied that, and talked about the speakers they used live on the tour, but never what they used in studio. I took two of them out and paired them with some G12h 70th anniversary. Let me know if you're interested in hearing them. I'll send you a FB video or something.

Greetz from the Silvermine Studio ❤ I knew that effect from 16 to 8 ohms well, but really thanks to all the comparison. Here my favs: 1. Alnico gold 10" wich are very close to my beloved Marshall Gold Back 12" 2. G12H75 cream back, what is the ultimate classic rock thing 3. G10V jr. is stunning me in clearness, I have to set them to my Fender 4. Alnico blue 10" comes very unique and is rich to an experiment 5. Greenback 12" as a classic set up in use already, aside to regular 70/80 settings, or older Rolas G12H that being used here. But honestly this is all a matter of taste in combination to the amplifier and not at least to the music what it's on. Thanks a lot for your great work.
I'm pleasantly surprised, I've been looking at the Creambacks for a while... but the Alnico Blue was my favorite across the board. Sizzly at times but not unpleasantly so.
This is sick! I;m looking into a new 4x12 Marshall cab, well, new to me... and one is a 1960BX loaded with Greenbacks G12M and the other 1960BHW with Creambacks G12M and I an torn between the two...
Best video comparison out there...thanks again. If you have a little time to add the new Celestion 100 Alnico in next to the others, that would be amazing and much appreciated.
Hey Adam, just consulting this for the millionth time, and thought you might like to know a bit of trivia I've discovered: the "Vintage 30" name comes from the fact that those speakers were released in 1987, the 30th anniversary of Celestion "proper" going into full production. And they were trying to capture the Alnico Blue "thing" because 1987 also happened to be Marshall's 25th birthday (Silver Jubilee and all that), and Marshall wanted Celestion to create a speaker which would sound reasonably accurate in a 25th anniversary Bluesbreaker reissue combo, but which wouldn't blow up if you dimed the amp, as the Alnico Blues in the original JTM45 combos often did. So "Vintage" for the reissues Marshall was doing in 1987 (the amp and standalone cabs as welll), and "30" for commemorating Celestion's 30th birthday with what they intended as a modernized version of the speaker that put them on the map.
One problem with larger speakers is poor high frequency dispersion. 1x12 combos sound more dull the further you move from the center. The Supro Thunderbolt has a 15" speaker, but it has a wooden cross to diffuse the highs across the room. People use beam blockers and the Mitchell Foam Donut to alleviate the issue. However, it's not really a problem if you play alone in your home.
Great job guys👍👍 You do not have Sidewinder and G12M 70. First is fairy rare speaker with cast frame and 150 Watts. 145 mm magnet. Sounds flat compared to V30. G12M70 is bright and thin sounding, good for clean chords when brightness is in demand..
I am in love with the darn Alnico Blues and oddly, the G10 Vintage. I am especially surprised how much John Browne's bit rings good to my ears with the Alnico Blue. Happy to have this reference! A great complement to Johan Segeborn's insatiable classic speaker playthroughs.
Adam, you, sir, are a monster. The sad thing is... thanks to this video, I now know that I need to buy a few speakers I think might be up my alley and try them in my own cabs with my own set-up... I love you and I hate you at the same time, lol. But in all seriousness, what an amazing job and what a monumental task you have achieved.
what really gets me is pricing of speakers nowadays... you mentioned greenbacks were cheaper to make , and now they are one of the most expensive speakers to be had.....love the video by the way Great Job !
Wow what a ton of work this was and you did great! The Twin: Celestion Creamback 65, Celestion A Type, Neo Cream 10, V Type, and Greenback were my favorites in that order. Marshall JCM800: hands down the G12H-150 is killer (a bit thin on the leads), Alnico Cream (good all around), V-Typr, G12H-75 Cream (rhythm peaky midrange cuts well), G15V-100 (mids darker but sound great), Century Vintage (if you want bright), and A Type (if you want darker and less tight). JMP: Alnico Cream, G12H-30, Lead 80, Fullback (big dominant), V-Type (Good all around), Greenback, G10 Creamback, G10 Greenback, and Redback (brighter). Revv Generator 120 MK3: Alnico Creamback, G12H-30, G12h-75 Cream, and Century Vintage.
This video has helped me so much. I was on a fence between the Creamback 65 and the Creamback 75… I use a completely hot rodded Gibson LP Junior with a Fralin Noiseless and the I feel like the best one to balance out my tone, after hearing this, will be the Alnico Cream… I use a P90 and love that vintage tone and vibe… Thanks Adam! 💪🏼
Adam this video should be the ultimate Celestion comparison as of 2021. This video must need a lot of effort to make and the amount of information is enormous. Thank you for this. I listen to this not because I want to buy celestion speaker, but for giving me a rough idea on how each celestion speaker sounds like. I use that knowledge to select impulse response that is suitable for amp sim that use.
Wow!!! Huge RESPECT for this level of in depth demo on the topic! THANK YOU!!! Helps to make the right choice without buying all of there and trying them out.
106:45 The Marshall Mode 4 head I got years ago was 350 watts. I owned it about 1 month before the head blew, and they took it back under warranty. I never got a chance to get used to it and got another head instead.
5:02:40 For my own reference. The anniversaries are definitely my favourite. Century Vintage at 04:59:07 are also awesome, but Celestion discontinued them. Thanks for the stellar video!
@@jsullivan2112 My local guitar store had the Century Vintage on clearance for $75 when they got discontinued. I picked one up for the hell of it. I believe the main reason they got discontinued was due to the neodymium magnets not performing well at volume. They don't push the same as ferrite and alnicos do and it ends up a bit flubby when you crank them. Not too many guitar players are sold on Neodymiums in general. Ultimately, the Century Vintage is a bit bright for my taste but, it has its uses in a low volume clean setting. But to each is own.
Neodymium is 10 times stronger than ceramic, so it’s not to do with “not handling” or being “flubby”. I think it’s just that a lot of players were expecting one thing (a vintage 30 sound) and got something else.
@@adamsteelproducer That makes a lot of sense, I like the fact that it doesn’t sound like a V30. There are guys who put these in their Mark IV combo and absolutely love it, and i can hear why. They’re not exactly quiet amps either.

The best speaker comparison I’ve seen. There are lots of good ones. But this is about as good as it gets. Thank you
A little over 2 hours in...this is an incredible gold mine for tone chasers!
Final section on 16ohm vs 8ohm speaker is super valuable, thank you.
Adam, I don't need to tell you how insane this is, you know it! The amount of work... no words. Absolutely awesome!
Thanks Max. Yeah this one took a lot of work. I’m not doing this again any time soon!
Very cool of you to do this
Remarkable video man big props! The only thing I would have wished for is to have a Alnico Silver Bell speaker in here for comparison. Otherwise perfectly done!!
A monumental achievement, Adam and crew. Congratulations. This will be a great reference video for many years to come!!!
Thanks Chad. I really hope so!
This is nuts, in the best possible way. Henning sent me as well. And I am actually going to use it (tiny bits of it anyway). Thank you, you crazy person you. Overwhelming.
Great video and a lot of effort to make it scientifically correct in comparisons.
I do have to say that the heat explanation is much different than what I have seen and been taught when it comes to speakers
First off, there is no friction in the voice coil.

You’re awesome man! Thanks for taking all the time
There are quite a few standouts here.
the T75 is both full and piercing trebley and combines so well with the Marshalls, but also with the Twin.
Prefered the 16ohm on the Twin but the 8ohm with the Marshalls and the Revv
All the 10" speakers but especially the G10 Vintage were my least favorites, followed up by the A Type, Classic Lead 80, K100 and Fullback
from my IRL experience and in the room the T75 is my favorite and the A Type is my least favorite to work with

Awesome video! I was very surprised at some of the sounds. I use vintage 30's and g12h creambacks. I really really like the hemp back! never heard of that speaker before. Think it will pair really well with my creamback or lynchback. Killer killer work by you and all the guitarists you brought together.

Actually medium greenbacks were 20W and heavy were 25W at the time, hence the “100” on the cabinet. 30W heavy greenbacks came later
They didn’t include the 55 Hz Heritage, either-sadly. Great effort anyway!
I didn’t include any heritage at all, as described near the start of the video, they’re a whole other rabbit hole to go down
century vintage and vintage 30s for metal is what i like most from this video. thank you much

Henning sent me. I have to watch this. You are clearly slightly insane, but I like that.

Here my favs:
1. Alnico gold 10" wich are very close to my beloved Marshall Gold Back 12"
2. G12H75 cream back, what is the ultimate classic rock thing
3. G10V jr. is stunning me in clearness, I have to set them to my Fender
4. Alnico blue 10" comes very unique and is rich to an experiment
5. Greenback 12" as a classic set up in use already, aside to regular 70/80 settings, or older Rolas G12H that being used here.
But honestly this is all a matter of taste in combination to the amplifier and not at least to the music what it's on. Thanks a lot for your great work.
Dude! this is ridiculous! ..
How could you up the speaker video game even more?!
Thanks a LOT for your hard work :)

WOW ... Well done. Thank you for the effort it took to do this video. This is a valuable resource. Thank you !

I love the Blues too. Was going to build a Greenback 2x12 but will now use Blues instead!
This is an incredible comparison. Thank you.
+1 Celestion Blue for transparency and definition
You guys are awesome for doing this.

5:02:40 For my own reference. The anniversaries are definitely my favourite. Century Vintage at 04:59:07 are also awesome, but Celestion discontinued them. Thanks for the stellar video!
Century Vintage is my favorite by far… Not sure why they would discontinue their best speaker!
@@nsc217 The sales probably weren’t there, or supply issues, or both.
