Hi Teoh, Thanks for the wonderful review! I am a bit confused between ipad 9 vs ipad air for notes taking. Do you think ipad 9 can be used for efficient notes taking or I should buy ipad air because of the laminated display and a slightly bigger display ?
For note taking, both have the same performance. So it comes down to your budget. Generally speaking, the cheaper model offers more value for money simply because it’s much cheaper. Check out refurbished units from Apple website for deals.
Hi Teoh, i want to ask about iPad 9. I'm an illustrator, usually I do work on a laptop using Photoshop and I want to have an ipad to do commission work or freelance work when I'm outside / in the mood drawing in iad. But my budget can only buy an ipad 9, the rest is for daily needs. Can I draw serious work on ipad 9 with 3 gb ram storage 64 gb? and also I'm new to this iPad so I don't have any experience drawing in iPad 8 / iPad pro / iPad air. Thank you
What is the usual size of your illustrations? How many layers do you usually use? These questions are key. If you need a large canvas with 300 DPI, and many layers, I would not recommend it. If your usual size is A4 in 300DPI , then you would get 26 layers, is that enough for you?
@@maurorenard82 it depend..... usually i use 3840 x 2160 or 3000 x 3000 more or less. For layer, when i do some game illustration it takes 100 layers minimum i need 70 layers. But i think ipad its really limited for that. So i was think that i use ipad for sketching and grayscaling its enough using 10-20 layers and for the render and color, i think i will continue to the pc. The procreate can save the file as psd or not?
@@maurorenard82 I usually draw at 300 DPI and don't use more than 20 layers. As to how many layers you need, just look at your current workflow or the art you've created. My artworks don't require that many layers. Just line, colour, texture, shadow, clouds. If it's a complex scene with many subjects maybe 2-4 times more layers which is still under 20 layers.

Hi Teoh. Great review. I'm an aspiring digital artist and I'm very determined to pursue career as an artist. But I'm having trouble choosing which device I have to buy. Im not concerned bout the processing power since all are very much capable. My main concern is the RAM size. I'm choosing between the ipad 9 (3gb), air (4 gb) or pro 11 inch (8 gb). I have the budget to get the Pro but it surely is good if I can still save some money. Can I do serious art work and take freelance illustration jobs with either 3 or 4 GB of RAM? or the safest choice is to go for the Pro? Thanks Teoh!🙂
Perhaps the iPad Air 4. Check out the refurbished section on Apple website where the prices are 15% off. iPad Air has been our for a while so there may be refurbished units. Or just get the refurbished 2018 or 2020 iPad Pro instead which are all better than the iPad 2021 and iPad Air 2020.
Hi Teoh, ive done a ton of research on ipads, macs, and other tablets lately so i have a really good idea of the specs on the whole line as well as older ipads. Ive also been looking into getting something to help with my digital art and something to compliment a MacBook for school. Looking to start graphic design courses soon. I was thinking about just starting with the ipad 9 because i think that buying the air this year will be a mistake abd next years will come with a significant upgrade. Anyways the reason why I’m commenting here is to ask shy you think that the 2018,2020 ipad pros are better than the new m1’s and the a14 air? Thanks
@@joshuagiles7883 The iPad Air will be following behind iPad Pros. Possible upgrades would to from 4GB to 6GB RAM. Anyway, I don't recommend the iPad Air 4 as long as you can get the refurbished 11-inch iPad Pro (2020) from Apple's website because pricing is quite close to iPad Air 4. Even if the iPad Air 5 comes with 6GB RAM, it's like you're buying iPad Pro 2020.
Hello. Very important question.. Is there any noticeable difference between iPad 8th + iPad 9th + iPad Air 3rd gen in terms of the writing experience, from latency to the natural feel of writing? I need a detailed answers because I've watching many many reviews on UA-cam for weeks but I just can't seem to find a clear answer. My use is strictly for note taking during lecture + edit my notes after classes to make them look more appealing for studying
There's no significant difference. Between normal iPad and iPad Air, it's just the laminated display on the latter. Actually if you're not buying the iPad for drawing, just go with Samsung tablets with S Pen or the Xiaomi Pad 5 (my recommendation). Both have good handwriting performance and tablets have way more features compared to the entry level iPads.
@@teohontech7141 Thank you for your reply. Would you kindly explain to me what are those features that are not available on iPads but available on Android devices? As far as I know, most of the popular apps are only available on apple devices for example, such as Notability and GoodNotes 5. Also, I haven't tried writing on any devices but I have a strong feeling that because the S pen have a very short nib, it will cover my writing somehow and won't make my writing visible compared to the long nib of Apple pencil or other alternatives. Please do comment on that. Thank you

Awesome review, thank you! If you’ll choose between a new iPad 9 and a used iPad Air 3 for exactly the same price, which one would you pick for drawing and digital art and why?
Hello, thank you so much for the detailed artist review! I am an illustrator that primarily works on a PC but I'm looking to buy a tablet so I can still work on the go. I am currently torn between ipad 9 and (a used) samsung tab s7+. I'm very concerned about the ram and performance. Would drawing a multi-page comic (more than A4 300dpi) on CSP still run smoothly? I have had no experience with any apple product yet but I'm looking towards ipad9 because of the price.. Would this be recommended for a budget comic artist like me?
Thank you for your informative video. I would like to know which would be better as my first iPad. Is iPad 9th gen or iPad air 4 better for their price range and procreate layers and so on? I'm considering getting it mainly for art (as a hobby but hopefully in the future I hope to do some commission stuff). Also I'm more of an android / Windows user. Would it be difficult to transfer artworks and so on directly instead of cloud? Thank you :)
Hello, did you happen to get one? I am practically in the exact same situation as you, word for word! Would love to know your answer to your own question if you happened to get an ipad!🤭
Hi i know the concepts drawing app from your video and i have tried to download it and use for drawing (i am a beginner), hiwever is it you need to purchase the plan in order to fully utilise the tools and functions of the app?
It's free to use but they have some tools and features (e.g. unlimited layers) locked behind paywall. Just get the Essentials set which is a good deal which unlocks many additional tools. It's a one time payment.
I usually do sketching and have drawn few coloured digital arts. And in sketching, I love our traditional pencil and paper. But when it comes to coloured drawing, digital art has much more features and is more diverse compared to normal drawing. And it is also quite fun and extremely convenient when I just want to mess around. So, is it (9th gen) good for that? I mean, a sketch would take much less layers but a drawing would take a lot of layers? And about I pad air or mini. Is it more worth it than this one? Because I can straight up say, I am student and I honestly can't buy I pad pro.
Thanks so much for the review. I have a question. While there are currently alternatives such as Samsung Tab S9 Fe or S9, do you think iPad 9 is preferred due to its iOS applications? It is also necessary to consider long-term use. iPad 9 was released in 2021, Samsung's this year. I'm confused about this,
iPad 9 is an ancient tablet. It's already an old tablet when it came out in 2021. I recommend Samsung easily unless you want to go with iPad 10 which is more expensive, and adding storage is also expensive, and Apple Pencil is not included.
Really great review. Very informative. Would love to see a review of Samsung Galaxy S6 Lite. Which would you choose for an art tablet... Apple 9th gen or S6 Lite? Thank you!
Maybe S6 Lite 2022 since pen is included and there's microSD card slot. I have reviewed that tablet here www.parkablogs.com/content/artist-review-samsung-tab-s6-lite-2022 and on UA-cam
Seems like there are plenty of good products for budget artists now. Examples of tablets under 400: iPad 9 (even with pen included), Galaxy Tab S6 Lite, Galaxy Tabs S9 FE. Really depends on your preference. iPad 9 isn't laminated but you'll probably get used to it
Hello Teoh! Thanks for the review. It's super in depth. I'm a student who loves drawing and planning to do commissions occasionally using the ipad and apple pencil Would u recommend this? I'm on a budget and my only issues is I'm afraid the procreate on this iPad is not as updated as the newer ipad 10th etc. Thanks a lot!
iPad 9. Because the variety of drawing apps from the Huawei AppGallery is extremely limited currently. If you want to upgrade storage to 256GB, consider the Samsung Tab S7 FE instead.
@@filmsandmemories Yeah, then the iPad would be good. But wait for my review of the Xiaomi Pad 5 first because I just received the Xiaomi tablet and it's better than the iPad in every way, and is cheaper. I don't have the Xiaomi pen so I can't talk about drawing performance yet. If you're not into drawing, I recommend Xiaomi without hesitation. I bought mine at US $300. That's with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. 4 way speakers. 120Hz display.
Hello Teoh, thanks again for replying a while back to some questions I had about the old 9.7 iPad Pro, I forgot to ask something I didn’t consider at the time, I am attracted to the size and low cost and willing to accept compromises like the 4 layer limit, however, it would be a deal breaker if I could not use it at all for the only reason I would want it and needed to ask you another question. It’s regarding the “obsolete after 7 years,” policy, does it render procreate completely useless or could I still sketch with it but it would be stuck with an old version? My apologies for not grasping this fully, I love the price and simply needed a more portable and affordable procreate sketching tool, but I didn’t consider how it being on its 6th year (I think) would affect even my limited use case?
I recommend upgrading only if you can't do something on your current iPad. E.g. Your iPad is lagging, storage is running out, can't create the number of layers that you want. If so probably the iPad 9 simply because it's cheaper. Or the refurbished iPad Air 3 if you can find it at a good price on Apple's website.
@@teohontech7141 agree with this. I ended up going for air 5. The pro cost more for things I don't use. But to be honest, I prefer the 1st gen apple pencil though. Don't like the tactile qualities on the 2nd gen apple pencil. And if I have not missed anything, the 2nd gen pencil doesn't give extra nibs. Yet it costs so much more just for the extra few short cuts.
iPad 8 is kinda old. Even iPad 9 and 10 are old. For almost the same amount of money, I recommend you get Samsung Tab S7 FE (64gb) instead which comes with the pen. If you need more storage, you can by microSD card for that tablet.
Hi Thanks for wonderful content. Have you noticed any shade of blue on the edges of your ipad’s screen mine has those especially on top and bottom. I think its called backlight bleeding and its the nature of LCDdisplays but its super annoying for me since I bought an ipad for I was thinking its display would by better than a samsungs.
For serious student note-taking, iPads with all distractions like movies, music, etc. you can put in it is the worst device for academics. Students are better off with devices like reMarkable, Wacom Smartpad, etc.
Could you please advice whether to buy ipad 9, matepad 11, s6 lite or surface go 2? I’m a programmer and i want to do handwriting instead of keyboard so my main concern is handwriting to text conversion, thank you
I do not know if it's intentional but you omitted the other way to charge the 1st gen Apple pencil. Instead you emphasized the crude way to charge the 1st gen Apple pencil that practically no one is using to charge it. Pressure sensitivity feature of the Apple pencil separates it from China's cheap knock offs. Comparing it to iPad mini 2021 is like comparing a Hyundai to BMW.
Hi Teoh.. You're the best reviewer for ipad.. I mean because you tell what i want to know.. Can you give me some advice, what the best choice between ipad 9 vs ipad mini 5.. For drawing.. I want to buy the 256gb.. Thank you...
That iPad Pro 2017 is quite old. If you are buying secondhand, the battery life would be much shorter now. So I recommend the iPad 2021 instead. Or check out the refurbished section on Apple's website for deals.
Overall drawing experience is still better than Samsung tabs (idk about s7+). Everything else I've tested out. The Spen has a rubbery tip which allows better friction. Also I've touched on XP Pen & Wacom One on the same budget. Ipad 9 was still better. The Apple Pencil has no equal, it has the lowest initial activation meaning you'll be able to do hatching like on a Cintiq 16. Also Procreate is the best for drawing, although I use Clip Studio all the time but thats mainly because I had it on my PC for many years. If 400 is your budget then chose Ipad 9 if you're targeting S7+ then chose Ipad pros. & this is from someone who's used Android since ever & I have no interest in ever using Iphones in the future. If your main focus is drawing then battery backup & Apple pencil charging is top notch, dont bother giving it a thought.
Hey, just a little help Just a little while ago I was planning on to get ipad 8th gen 128 gb but now I am planning to get 9th gen as its latest. I would only be using it for 3 years. As a med student I'd be mainly taking notes, save docs & PDFs, also bit of graphic designing and animations, Netflix and youtube. Is 64 gb enough?

Yes. Just note that those apps don't have all the features compared to the desktop version, and they are subscription based apps. I recommend using Affinity Graphic design apps instead since can do much of what Adobe apps can do for a one time purchase.

They have the same drawing performance, but slightly different experience. So ultimately it comes down to how much you want to spend. If you want to go with iPad Air, I recommend getting the refurbished iPad Pro 11 (2019) direct from Apple instead.
My budget is limited so I'm torn between getting a new ipad 9 or a second hand ipad air 3 for drawing, they both are around the same price in my country, my main concern about the 9gen is the air gap because its non laminated screen and about the air 3 I'm not really sure if it's worth buying a device from three years ago, any suggestions please?
Is it secondhand Air 3? If so the battery life will be quite bad after so many years. iPad 9 may not have a laminated display but the gap is no big deal.
If it's just note taking, go with Samsung. iPad advantage is it has a huge variety of drawing and graphic design apps which you don't need if you're just taking notes.

Hello, did you happen to get one? I am practically in the exact same situation as you, word for word! Would love to know your answer to your own question if you happened to get an ipad!🤭
Very thorough! Thanks
Because I can straight up say, I am student and I honestly can't buy I pad pro.
hi my question is if its really no difference for the drawing performance bc of the display without lamination
No difference
Thanks so much for the review. I have a question. While there are currently alternatives such as Samsung Tab S9 Fe or S9, do you think iPad 9 is preferred due to its iOS applications? It is also necessary to consider long-term use. iPad 9 was released in 2021, Samsung's this year. I'm confused about this,
iPad 9 is an ancient tablet. It's already an old tablet when it came out in 2021. I recommend Samsung easily unless you want to go with iPad 10 which is more expensive, and adding storage is also expensive, and Apple Pencil is not included.

Hi Sir Teo !!! Nice review !!!

Maybe S6 Lite 2022 since pen is included and there's microSD card slot. I have reviewed that tablet here www.parkablogs.com/content/artist-review-samsung-tab-s6-lite-2022

Hi Teoh, can you suggest which one to get between the Huawei mate 11 and ipad 9? if I'm gonna get my first tablet. Thanks!

Great video it has really helped me with my decision

Hi Teoh.. may u recommend me i’m a ipad 6th gen user, i want to upgrade, better choosing ipad 9 or ipad air 3? For drawing on procreate

@@cacatamicin3631 iPad 6 to iPad 9 is just 2 to 3GB of RAM. Not really a compelling reason to upgrade.

Hi I noticed you dont have review for ipad 8, do you think it's still worth getting? I just want to use it for casual drawing and social media.
iPad 8 is kinda old. Even iPad 9 and 10 are old. For almost the same amount of money, I recommend you get Samsung Tab S7 FE (64gb) instead which comes with the pen. If you need more storage, you can by microSD card for that tablet.

Thanks for wonderful content. Have you noticed any shade of blue on the edges of your ipad’s screen mine has those especially on top and bottom. I think its called backlight bleeding and its the nature of LCDdisplays but its super annoying for me since I bought an ipad for I was thinking its display would by better than a samsungs.
There is some but I don't really think about it. Samsung tablets with OLED displays don't have the problem but those tablets are more expensive.

Hi Teoh. In your opinion as artist, better ipad 9 or ipad mini 5 for illustration ? And why ?
Thank you 😊
Large display provides a more comfortable drawing experience. Go cut a piece of paper to the size of the tablets to compare for yourself
What drugs are you on? The majority of people charge the pencil using the iPad, because it’s way more convenient.

How does this compare to the Samsung Galaxy S6/s7 Lite/SE? Which not only comes free with a Spen, but also uses Wacom technology.
