  • Do you really need the expensive Apple Pencil 1 or 2 or would a cheaper ipad stylus do everything you would need? Here I test review and compare a variety of cheaper ipad stylus alternatives to see whether they offer value for money compared to the official branded apple pencil.

One thing to keep in mind, Procreate developers have already announced that they are removing pressure sensitivity support for non-Apple Pencil styluses. So the the other brands won’t be able to be used to full potential very soon.

Thanks for this review which is helpful since I will be doing a presentation concerning digital art in a class where most of the participants have mild cognitive impairment which includes me as well. Art is proven to help those with MCI. Since I use Procreate I will be recommending your drawing videos and reviews such as what you have done concerning using different pencils. I pIan on doing a simple drawing where I will have differed participants doing aspects of it on different layers so they can see how simple it can be to do a drawing. I so appreciate your in-structural encouragement as you suggest not to get to bogged down with doing it at your proficiency but to do it the best you can. You are such a good ambassador for Procreate and iPads which have encouraged my purchases in these areas.

Thanks James, great review! I use a UOGIC and am very happy with it. I used to have an Apple Pencil but it didn’t last very long before it stopped working and at that price, I wasn’t going to replace it. However, I had forgotten that my stylus isn’t actually an Apple Pencil when I got it back out a couple of weeks ago, so it just goes to show that the other styluses are great alternatives 😊

I have the KXT and for what I need it for, I would say it’s really good! As said in the video, it’s accurate and smooth, but there are a few things to consider. One is that for me, I keep accidentally clicking on the power button and switching it off. I might just be clumsy but it’s quite annoying. The battery life is excellent, it lasts a long time and I don’t feel like I have to constantly charge it. The final thing for me personally, is since the tip isn’t the absolute finest, it’s sometimes not as accurate as it could be. It is still accurate, but if you’re an artist I honestly think you’d be better off with an Apple Pencil. I am in no way an artist, but I do like to do sketches and research using it, mainly for fun. I think this review was really good and helpful, but this is my opinion on the KXT.

I’m personally very happy with the Apple Pencil 2, it offers so much more to me pairing with my iPad Pro magnetically charging as you said, and the features it affords me like pressure, drawing with angles it’s just perfect.
If you can afford an ipad, then I’d definitely suggest going with apples own proprietary pencils for ease of use.

This is perfect!! I’m looking for an alternative for my daughter! She’s almost 6 (in April), loves drawing, and is very good at it, so I want her to have a stylus to use on her iPad. She has 6th Gen iPad, and even tho it would be the 1st Gen pencil, idk if I wanna spend the money. She’s 5, and may lose it 🤷🏽‍♀️. This gives me some good alternatives to check out!! Thanks so much!! Oh, I didn’t hear it mentioned, but is scratching the screen ever a concern? She’s not particularly heavy-handed, but anything is possible. 😅

    • @JamesJulier-Artist

If you are an artist, there is no replacement for an Apple Pencil. I have an Apple Pencil one I bought in 2017 along with my 12.9 iPad Pro and they both work perfectly to this day, although I am kind of ready to buy a new iPad with an updated pencil. I have dropped my pencil several times but it still works perfectly and holds its charge well. I used Wacom tablets for several years and hundreds of dollars! They can’t hold a candle to the Apple Pencil! So for me the Apple Pencil is cheap by comparison. I’m not saying other Styluses don’t work because they do but they just don’t do everything most Artists would need (most importantly Pressure Sensitivity). However, I do also have alternative styluses such as the mesh one and it works perfectly fine (when I’m NOT doing calligraphy, sketching or detailed artwork). So, if you’re looking for something like that, this video is very helpful. Thank you for your informative video!

I’m a beginner using Procreate to learn how to draw. I have one of the £20 stylus’s and the only problem I have is that a lot of the tutorials out there are of course done with an IPencil. Because of that fact some of them can’t be followed closely, even the beginner ones as a lot use the fact that the IPencil tapers or they use a lighter or heavier pressure. Now for beginners I guess we shouldn’t worry about that but I find it stresses me out as I have to keep stopping the tutorial to alter the width or opacity of the line. Is there an alternative between a compatible stylus at around £20 and the IPencil at £100+ that has a version of the pressure sensitivity?

Apparently majority of third party styluses are for new iPads. So far for my 1st gen air I’ve only found two proper ones on AliExpress (unfortunately one got destroyed by domestic accident) so I get my iPad is especially old and I’ll be looking up my next iPad with Apple Pencil support (I’d love 2nd gen but if not then this video has given me loads of alternatives)
I’ve been eyeing the Logitech one for a long while now (also I’d love to find something I can use on my iPhone too as the one I have now is slightly laggy and not always most precise but if I’m on the go or somewhere not home I’m on my phone)
Also I’ve never been able to use the ones with the squishy silicone top. For some reason I just tear those apart (or maybe it’s because of the screen protector which isn’t the paper type but regular one)

I’m tickled that in 2023 there’s still a question of whether there are legitimate alternatives to the Apple Pencil 😅 (yet, here I am, watching another video on the topic😂)
I’d probably have at least two spare Pencil 2’s if I’d saved the money wasted from all the 3rd-party styli I have bought since my first iPad Pro in 2015. In fact, I ended up ‘gifting’ the several I still had left laying around to my sis, who recently bought an iPad model that doesn’t have Pencil support, so she could decide which type she preferred.
Also, considering that popular apps like Procreate are discontinuing support for 3rd-party styli*, I’d stress buying the Apple Pencil even more, particularly for artists (who I imagine comprise the majority of your YTube audience). If you’re going to spend hundreds (at least) on the iPad _Pro,_ do yourself the favor and just add that $130 into the cost of the device and get the Pencil.
I’ve had my Pencil 2 since late 2020 when I got the 4th Gen Pro, and haven’t lost nor broken it, but I don’t have kids or pets, and rarely transport the iPad/Pencil outside anymore, so I may just be an optimal-environment usage case. One thing I’m certain of is I’ll never use anything other than the Apple Pencil as long as I own an iPad ☺️
_(*) The Crayon was built w/Apple Pencil technology, according to Procreate’s FAQs, so that one should still be supported in the app._

I'm looking for a stylus for my daughter's iPad... she is going on 8 years old and is interested in video editing and just being creative with digital media. We've gone through a couple of cheaper pens (around $10 USD, no name brand worth mentioning...) that broke very easily when dropped.
I was wondering which of these would hold up to a kid's usage at a budget price... is the Penyear fairly durable, for example, because the price is right and seems to offer lots of utility, but if it breaks upon first drop, it's kind of useless.

I bought the IPenbox from Amazon for $29 shipping and handling and it has palm rejection, charges on the iPad, came with extra points, and it comes in different colors. I chose yellow to help me keep track of it. My Apple Pencil died after not being used regularly and that PO’ed me… how can that be fair?

Those pencil alternatives are great, but I’ve experienced a one problem
while using one of those. When you take notes or draw something I always hear how the pencil “knocks the screen” ( I hope it makes sense to you), which is quite annoying for me as I can’t take a pencil with me to school… So, is there the same problem while using an Apple pencil or not?

It also pairs and charges via the magnet, but essentially yes. For most artists pressure sensitivity is highly important though, for me it’s worth every extra dollar for that feature I use daily.

I would suggest that if you have the option to buy an Apple original product, you should go for it. Most people who use Apple products are quite discerning, and some even have a bit of OCD. The price and quality are directly proportional, and once you discover something that isn't quite up to par with Apple's original product, you'll become hyper-aware of the issue and it will be magnified infinitely. You may even curse every time you use it... So, it's best to buy the original Apple product. Although it may be more expensive, Apple's quality is second to none.🤣😂

If I were you, I would use the Apple Pencil is not the other pencils because it’s super smooth at the inside and the outside it’s kind of like you’re holding a real pencil

I bought the clone Pencil. The only difference thatI have noted is the battery widget on my iPad 10 will not show the charge percentage of my clone Pencil. I will buy an Apple Pencil when funds permit. I did buy a clone magnetic charger for my Pencil and it works fine.
