UA-cam's Automated system wanted to put 5 midroll ads in this 12 minute video by the way. Absolutely incredible.
And that's why I use an ad blocker all the time
It’s becoming more and more money oriented unfortunately, many UA-camrs are going that way too so they don’t do anything
Machines don't speak irony
Dude this was the most based fucking video about ads I've ever seen. Thanks for peeling back the curtain a bit I didn't even know about adblock and google in 2023, gonna have to use firefox I guess.
When I watch youtube on my TV and can't have an adblocker running the ads I see are really random as well. Absolutely no relation to my interests. It makes me wonder whether online advertising is one big charade and a lot of tech companies are doomed the moment it gets revealed it doesn't work anywhere near as well as thought.
I was totally against using adblocker. Then, one day, i was forced to watch a 20 seconds unskippable ad for a 6 second clip. It was my breaking point
I went to ad blocker after getting a 3 minute unksippable ad. That was back in 2017 and when my ad blocker got booted off the site last week I was shocked at the amount of ads being constantly shoved in my face vs the very few ads I would get back in 2017.
Seriously! Videos under a minute can’t have ads, make this an official rule UA-cam!
I too experienced that where a funny, dumb 12-second video had an ad. 😑
I started using ad blocker when youtube started demonitizing creators for no reason. I never looked back. Now, I would assert that it isn't safe to browse the internet in general without an ad blocker.
I was never against adblock because I always found it annoying to use the internet in general while being heckled by ten thousand ads per square inch. UA-cam used to be largely hobbyists sharing something they're passionate about. Now the focus is on making money. It's not necessarily bad to want to try and make some income from a thing you enjoy, but most of youtube these days just feels so soulless (just like the million ads YT wants to force upon everyone).
Also, I just angry when I see most ads, so avoiding all of them is just better for my well-being.
My moment was when the ads started to get minutes long and became straight up scams and snake oil products.
One thing I hate recently is that there's a specific ad for an online casino that I've told YT to stop showing me and tagging it as inappropriate. I've done this over 100 times, and I'm still being shown that same ad constantly. If I were someone who has a gambling addiction or something, that could be a really bad advert to show me. UA-cam doesn't care. Google is scum.
Oh yeah, that has never worked and likely never will.
Gambling, fake medical advice, finance scams, adult games, youtube ads are becoming the same dreck you see at the bottom of clickbait news blogs
yeah, that feature also doesn't work with some UA-cam channels, if they rake in enough money UA-cam will ignore your "don't recommend this channel" and they will pop up in your recommended
I dont like reeses cups. Just something about them, even looking at them, makes my teeth feel weird. No matter how many times i told youtube to stop showing me their ads theyd persist. Not only that it was one of the ads theyd show repeatedly (think several times in an hour). Thats genuinely a big reason as to why i ad block
I’m tired of getting porn ads on youtube (i’m not joking, they show up under videos and it’s horrifying)
Disabled adblocker for a few days when the three video strike thing rolled in. I was shocked by how aggressive YT ads have got. Not to mention how low quality most of these ads are, some are outright scams. Having UA-cam on in the background, I realised I was 5 minutes in on an unskippable ad, so I could revisit a 30 second segment on a tutorial video. Which I had to watch another ad for for skipping through the video. Mental!
if you use brave and ignore the crypto BS, it actually has a really good adblocker, even going up to skipping ads on Spotify. I would recommend it if you only use yt or Spotify for that background music
Having to watch two 15 second unskippable ads for a 3 second clip
There is a modded app client that is add free can t name it due to shadowbanning comments, so try to find it on google you won t regret.
U block ori
AdBlock plus on your desktop.
This is what happens when a an app doesnt have competition
They will simply do wharever they want, without filters and low consequences
YT doesn't have competition because there is no money to be made off hosting tons of amateur videos. The only way it makes revenue at all is by enshittification
@@MCArt25 Nothing will ever compete with youtube. Twitter, reddit and twitch...What do they all have in common? They make no money. You cant compete with google or facebook cause they take 95% of add money. To big to fail.
@@MCArt25 i'm not sure about that any more. UA-cam gets trillions of views, advertisers need to be here, plus there's the personal data to sell. If UA-cam really tries to be cable TV then someone else will spring up. Already Twitter is looking to move content creators over.
@@MCArt25if that was the case youtube wouldnt have been around as long as it has, since the aggressive monetization isnt even close to nearly as old as the site is
The worst part is getting punished with random mid-roll ads for skipping around the video - even if you're just rewinding it by 60 seconds because you got distracted and didn't pay that much attention.
Yea I went full Adblock cuz of it.
Tough on IOS but there’s ways to do it.
I don’t even feel bad for content creators anymore anyways, 90% stretch their videos out on purpose for extra time for extra ads. Find I usually watch less than half of a video these days. UA-cam has gone downhill since the adpocolypse a decade ago.
@@carsonhunt4642 Adpocolypse lol, that's gonna be my catchphrase, I don't know what for but it will.
Yup, that is bloody annoying.
It hurts me emotionally
I just couldn't stand the ads anymore, I enjoy using the app on my phone and my tablet, had to go premium :/
I love it when an ad , for something I'm never going to buy, interrupts a music video I'm watching. Really enhances the experience.
adblock
Firefox with adblock ultimate. Works a charm. No youtube ads for years!
I think my breaking point was listening to a playlist while driving wondering ”Just how long IS this add?” pulling over and discovering I was 5 minutes in to an add that was 2 hours 41 minutes long. I could not believe what I was seeing there.
I found a way not to have any ads..... If I say what it is, UA-cam will know so do some research for yourself.....

@@kharikhy-ree2242 I hate tv because of the ads. I have my own channel and I don't care about the money. Just want people to enjoy there lives. Have a good day. UA-cam even blocked me using adblock for a bit and then they gave up. Have a good day.
Regrettably, that's how the business goes. Back in the day, they invented cable TV as an ad-free alternative (just like YT premium): you pay extra, no ads for you.
They're actually becoming worse. At least when we watch tv, the commercial breaks are very intentional and don't just cut off the show in the middle of a sentence. Plus we can just change the channel during commercial breaks. Or even fast forward through them if you recorded or paused it
The worst is when you listen to a wonderful meditation music, eyes closed, relaxed and BAM, a stupid loud ad starts......
There is a hint of evil in youtube
I know right! How else are we supposed to listen to meditative or background music without ads interrupting it?? It’s not fair we can’t listen to it in peace

What's worse is that they just select the same five ads to show you over and over again, and it's rarely ever for something you actually want. You just get sick of hearing the same ads over and over again. Now you can't actually watch a video for more than 2 minutes without an ad interrupting it, and it's a nightmare during long videos. Even worse is the fact you can get ads longer than the video you want to watch, e.g. a 40 second ad for a 3 second video. I tried an ad blocker in the hopes that it would improve the situation, but then youtube got petty and told me I just flat out couldn't watch any videos whatsoever until is disabled the blocker.
Literally. The same 5 ads get repeated every 5 minutes its insanity
The removal of the yellow tick indicating mid roll ads was the most infuriating change to me. Being jumped by ads with 0 warning is the absolute worst.

Idk if it’s still there but they added a 3 second countdown until ads at one point, so useless and it looked like the skip ad button so confusing as well.

how about the fact that UA-cam will demonetize some channels for not being ad-friendly, and yet they’ll still show ads on there 😵💫
And the ads themselves don't abide by the ad-friendly rules.
@@fragglegoth Ah YT being hypocritical.
I hate using UA-cam. I don’t want to support them at all but that’s there’s no other good option for long form content.
They also don’t screen their own ads properly... like UA-cam will play straight up scam ads or things that should not be on UA-cam... I feel like UA-cam probably doesn’t pay creators properly for google ads either as UA-cam is a part of google, so I feel like they just through their own ads in when advertisers aren’t buying up as much

I remember when Saberspark did a whole video essay on this, focusing on mobile game ads. I'm still infuriated at the thought
One's paying.
Becouse, one is paying, and the other is getting payed
Its because many youtubers let themselves get stepped on when stuff like this happens, so many times I've seen a youtuber make a video or tweet that youtube is screwing them over, but their actions to deal with it are to just sit there and hope youtube "sees the error or their ways", because most youtubers can't afford to sue the platform or don't want the trouble even if they could afford the effort. The only way youtube will improve is if a proper exodus happened where the big youtubers like markiplier, mr beast, ninja, Marques Brownlee, penguinz0, etc. move to another platform which would encourage the smaller youtubers to move as well.
You know what grinds my gears? The hour long ads. I'd like to be able to set my phone down and work without walking over to it and skipping an ad every 3 mins.

I can literally detect when a youtuber is about to speak about their sponsor and skip forward. However I keep noticing these sponsors getting longer and longer. Like 5 years ago maybe it'd be a 20 second shoutout but now these sponsorships are regularly taking up not only 90 seconds of the video, but they're also placed in the video specifically to take over the preview you get while hovering over a video. I know because skipping 30 seconds used to be enough. Then they made these ads longer, so I skip forward another 30 seconds. They keep getting longer
What i think is nuts is when they have a 2:30 ad in a 10 minute video like holy fuck dude what are you doing 😂
I don't see why companies think forcing us to watch their crap would convince us to buy their product. More often then not, the people I'm around agree that if they get a harassing ad, they'll purposely NOT consume that company's stuff.
Ah, but you HAVE heard of us....
Repetition was proven effective a long time ago for influencing silly human minds. If you are bored and want to try a new game, you may go browse the app store for a long time filtering past all the stuff you already tried or doesn't look appealing.. but eventually you will be lazy and search for a thing you have seen and looked passably interesting.
Or you will see ads for easy cooking so often you will eventually decide you are unreasonable to just assume it is a scam, and that introductory pricing is reasonable, isn't it?
Or a friend will mention they are looking for X thing you have never used... but you do know ONE name of such a product, and you do want to help your friend, right? Surely if they advertise that much, they must be good enough to be popular and profitable, so it is a decent option?
Right...?
Because you're all so selfish and f'd up that your conscience and morals are not enough to make you pay for something you use and enjoy and that requires the dedicated and sustained effort of a huge collective of hard-working humans to deliver to you. A single mid roll ad that's 10x louder than any actual YT video is infinitely worse than a sponsored 1minute segment that I can easily skip just going a minute ahead.

There's no alternative so they don't risk anything.
Don't worry, they are fully aware that they are killing UA-cam off. If the service you are offering has many consumers but few growth opportunities, it is best to just get as much money out of it as possible and invest it somewhere else.

@Sonic Mobian the removal of the dislike button means that scams / terrible how-to's / etc can no longer be quickly avoided and the user's time gets wasted. the only reason they took it away is because it prevents the big companies supporting them from getting negative responses on their videos. you might not have been affected by it but it was definitely a bad change

This comment brought to you by CAPTAIN INSANE-O butt chafe powder. "Don't let swamp ass drive YOU Insane!"
the single dumbest thing is that youtube heavily restricts what kind of content creators can make before they get demonetized, but dont hold ads to the same standards... youtubers cant show something mildly spicy, meanwhile in a video where the person is trying to be wholesome, you get an ad for hentai... or worse
"You are demonetized because our advertisers don't want their violent addictive poisonous swear-word-laden medical-pseudoscience porn to be associated with your far-right political ideology of being historically accurate in historical documentaries. What do you mean that's not even far-right? Shut up or your entire channel will be demonetized forever."
That's just power dynamics. Content creators depend on youtube. UA-cam needs content creators, yes, but youtube is a singularly organized entity, while content creators are basically a vast mob of individuals. Even if some of the content creators won't abide by UA-cam's monolithic standards, they ultimately can't effect any serious change, especially since they are individually weak.
The top 10 most-viewed UA-cam channels have a combined view count of just over 1.1 Trillion views. UA-cam gets that many views in total every year, nearly. All of those channels could vanish with their viewers never deciding to replace them, and UA-cam probably wouldn't even notice the metric difference for years.
Furthermore, only the top 9 channels actually have more TOTAL VIEWS than UA-cam's MONTHLY view count. There's literally nine channels out of tens of thousands of active, partnered, actually-relevant channels that could even put a visible dent in UA-cams metrics on their own. And of course, none of these channels ever would get involved in stuff like this.
To even further elaborate the difference, Pewdiepie only has a total view count of 28 billion. UA-cam gets nearly 3x his total views per *month*. Three separate pewdiepies would have to leave youtube entirely to set them back just a month in views.
For the vast majority of channels, it's even worse. Grant's channel only has a total of 33 Million views. He would need to find over 200 youtubers of a similar size to get a total view count equivalent to a month of youtube's views. And if he wanted to actually leave the platform and lower youtube's monthly views, he would need to find nearly 1000 other channels of a similar size to cause any measurable impact on UA-cam's metrics.
And this is all heavily skewed information, because in reality, if Grant's channel disappeared tomorrow, most of his viewers wouldn't stop viewing videos, they'd just turn their attention to other videos or channels. UA-cam has *all* the power in this relationship, and the only ones they really need to appease are advertisers and sponsors. Content creators and even viewers are just too small and too divisive to be a threat to them.

That's an honestly admirable stance coming from a UA-camr. Glad you're willing to respect our time and happy to support you on patreon because of that.
I can't remember who said it, but few months back I was watching a video where a guy was talking about how much ad revenue is generated by a single viewer. His conclusion was, if you donate $1 over the period of 5 years or so, you have already given the creator much more money, than what the creator would have earned by you watching and interacting with every single ad, on every single video over those 5 years.
So if you feel guilty of using ad blocker, as you are taking away money from your favorite youtubers, just give a $1 donation every year or so, and that would be much much more beneficial to that creator than watching ads to support him. The worst example of UA-cam ads was a video uploaded today by ‘Kazoneart’.
It was a video of a manager mourning the loss of his friend and colleague. The video was roughly 14min long and it was just a man, with a camera talking about how the death of Kim Jung Gi; How it happened, the funeral arrangements because Gi died abroad, how the company will commemorate Gi.
During the video, Hyun Jin Kim the manager of ‘Kazone’ breaks down while talking about Gi. UA-cam thought the best thing to do was to put an ad break of unskippable ads after Kim breaks down crying and turns the camera off before he resumes. When I shut the video down to watch it again there were THREE UNSKIPPABLE AD BREAKS in the video.
So, here’s my non-ad blocker way of getting rid of the ads when they show up but it works 95% of the time. When an ad plays there’s a small ‘i’ in the bottom left corner of the video, click that then ‘Stop seeing this ad’. It’ll cancel the ad block even if you don’t give a reason.
This is me giving you the finger UA-cam. Putting ads on a broken man grieving for his friend.
I was genuinely just thinking of this when I clicked the video. The fact that youtube has an entire algorithm for divvying up ads and their content and somehow slapping it onto someone being honest and open about a really tragic (and lets be honest, traumatic in regards to how Kim jung gi passed suddenly abroad) event. There is NO Reason there should be ads on that at all, let alone unskippable. Not only is it a pain in the ass to viewers, but it makes it impossible to talk about anything of value without (in this case) a grieving man being interrupted by idk, a cheery youtube shorts or hobby lobby christmas ad
I actually did that trick of pressing the i button and after about 6 months they literally took away the ability to stop seeing ads from me, which is why I now use an ad blocker.
So sorry, was looking through comments and accidentally pressed dislike on your comment.
