  • Does UA-cam feel different lately? Are you getting slammed with ads on the content you watch? Maybe even this video? Are you irritated by ads and maybe even frustrated with UA-cam’s monetization system?
Well, you are not alone, and I have the answer and explanation to all of these concerns and questions. I'm dead serious. There's an explainable answer to all these issues, so let's get started.
Here are the chapters for this video. Feel free to jump around accordingly:
    0:00 Introduction
    1:05 Ad Issue 1
    1:48 Ad Issue 2
2:03 The Major Issue With UA-cam Ads (The Facts)
4:22 How Creators Fit Into This
    5:38 Creator Example
6:50 How This Is Harming Small Creators
8:14 What UA-cam Needs To Do
    Note:
I deliberately leave the channel icons and video titles on each video for reference in case anyone wants to see the full videos featured in these documentaries. If anything is unclear, or for additional references, please reach out, and I will happily provide a link to any of the following content discussed, featured, or used as a b-roll in the video.

    Creators note:
Hello, my name is Zackary Smigel. I've been creating UA-cam videos since I was a kid. I started UA-cam full-time about five years ago. You might have seen me from Real Estate License Wizard, where I obtained 60,000 subscribers and over 5 million channel views. I have since left that channel for creative pursuits, and this is my first crack at starting something new. I'd appreciate a like and subscribe if this content interests you and I captured your attention for even just a few moments.
On a secondary note, this video is a follow-up to my last, although it can stand on its own. This is my 11th video essay using this style and format. Last week, I was happy to have 1,000 subscribers. Now, I have over 50,000. This is still unbelievable to me. I am so grateful for the support. Technical-wise, I figured out the sound effect issue, which is great. I'm happy with how this one came out. I hope all enjoy!
    Thanks so much for watching,

For the sake of science and the fact I don't have a sponsor on this video. I'm going to put one midroll on this video JUST ONE for the whole video. And please let me know in the comments if you got an ad or not. I'm generally curious what percentage of you do. If I had to guess, I'd say 70% but again. I don't have that data and no one except UA-cam does.

Sorry, but youtube sucks. Nothing but censorship, shadow banning, ads, and now they are deleting inactive channels starting in December. I have a lot of playlists full of important videos whose creators are done. They made the videos, did their job, and now they are done. I have to go and hunt down their content. My own videos won't live on after I've perished either, now on his God Forsaken platform. It only ever gets worse, never better.

I feel that this is one possibility that UA-cam does apply brakes to beginner channels. Logically it does not make sense that I got to 500 subscribers fairly easy and quickly in 5 months with bad quality videos as I had no idea what I was doing. Now, after the 500 mark I get 1 subscriber a week if I am lucky. This makes no logic sense to me. My subscriber speed should have picked up. But slowing me down means a lot longer period for UA-cam to take 100% of the ad revenue off of my content.
Also keep in mind with our complete broken down postal system in South Africa I can wait up to 6 months before I get the code UA-cam sends to your physical postal address plus then there is the chance that it can get lost in the post completely.

A 45% increase on pre rolls is an understatement in my experience. The yt app on my tv set will always throw me a pair of them over and over until I've backed out of the video enough to where they stop. Often, I'll get a pair of pre rolls that end and immediately get a second pair. Rewinding or fast forwarding gets a pair. Pausing the video for a few minutes gets a pair. The literal end of the video after the timer is up gets a pair before autoplay can begin counting down. Of course the next video gets a pair too. And this is all ignoring the sheer density of ads. every 4 minutes or so for me, and I tend to prefer having long videos on in the background. It's just too much work to babysit the mute button to not get blasted with the same dumb BK jingles, square space, invisiline and whey noise every four minutes.

One thing I'd like to add to the quality of ads. Recently I've gotten thousands of erotically implied ads whether it be for a dating site to "meet older women" or some furry asmr mobile game. The problem I have with these kinds of ads is 1. that they are scams just like the other ads and 2. UA-cam is still largely a kids' platform. Are these sexually hinting ads being served to 10-year-old kids? If I had a kid, I wouldn't want them to see a full cleavage on a scam dating site ad on UA-cam.

While watching DJ mix-sets, we used to be able to at least watch the whole video (about an hour or slightly over) with only an add at the beginning and at the end, but a few years ago the ad frequency and length both increased drastically. Now there is an ad about every 10 minutes, which basically defeats the whole point of watching the set. We've had to resort to adblockers on our pc and having to download the whole thing on USB and play it from there on our smart-tv.
Imagine how bad this is for short form content. Having a 5 minute video with two 14-second ads in front of it, I've seen that already a few years ago. Its just not worth your time anymore, so I cannot understand people put up with it and google trying to force it.

True, any ad is a take away but these are especially bad since you can't even look at the original video description or comments
It makes me not even want to watch short content. Why bother watching a 5 minute video if I get 2 or 3 ad rolls. It gets so bad sometimes with the ads and repetitive content that sometimes I just turn off UA-cam and find something else entertaining. It's like the old feeling of watching TV, nothing is really on and you keep seeing ads for stuff you don't want. Eventually you just turn it off and find something else

Bloody gory and very scary. But my favourite UA-camr Girl with the dogs gets her video taken down because a cat scratched her and she bled ever so slightly. Double standard much? There is really no excuse for them not to monitor what they themselves are advertising on their platform- they collect money from the advertisers to show their stuff after all.

You're right, get them views, make money while the smaller channel can't get monetized, and once they're big enough to be monetized but not large enough to be self sufficient on UA-cam you stop pushing their content.
A large majority, and I mean an overwhelming majority of UA-cam users barely have any subs. And number of subs doesn't necessarily correlate with video quality, sometimes I find smaller channels with great content, that go a long while without "blowing up"
Its a bit sad, but I guess that may be the price to pay for any average joe to be able to upload a video. I just wish that no matter how small you are, you'd get a cut of a revenue, cuz that would incentive some smaller youtubers to get more serious about it than just treat it as a hobby.

Putting ads on videos without the permission of the creator was actually the thing that made me stop making UA-cam videos. The only solution to these issues is for the big UA-camrs to start organising and forming content creator unions. UA-cam won't listen to you unless you can get organised. UA-cam is like any other business or institution in our society; if you're not costing them money, they don't care. It's up to you, though. I no longer have any skin in that game (live like you're free already).

" if you're not costing them money, they don't care"
You mean the TB of data that get's uploaded to UA-cam every hour for free? in that sense you're wrong on all levels.
Creators and Consumers cost UA-cam a ton of money every single second of watch time, that's why Google is trying to limit the money burning party that is UA-cam.
I get that ads suck, but honestly I'm amazed that UA-cam has survived this long, the product that they deliver free unlimited upload at 1080p, 2160, 4k@60fps no matter how big or small you are.. Unlimited "download" speeds (with a 1Gbps line I get basically 600-700Mbps down from UA-cam even when I'm not logged in) That's insane, the cost is that the consumers have to watch ads ever half second...
Other then the ad problem that I solve by just using adblockers, UA-cam is an insanely good product that is doing everything it can to give the "users" the best experience compared to the shit show of "free but limited" options out there, the tools that they give ANYBODY for free is why we have practically 0 competing product out there.
"odysee, vevo, daylymotion"... nah brah consumers are all at UA-cam, and frankly they don't even force the consumer to "upgrade or make a free acount" to enjoy UA-cam.
We are all out here complaining that UA-cam should be free? more expensive to Google? what exactly are we complaining about "They put ads on a free product? that I can enjoy without any other limitations"?
Basically we sound like spoiled brats... I mean You guys sound like spoiled brats because every time I mention that I just use adblock people try to bitch about "huurr durrr your leeching of others". but "I just want one add no two because I don't really like ads... I don't care how expensive your servers are I just want one add" that sounds even worst to me.

Not to mention the intrusive ‘next video’ popup at the end of videos that blocks the screen so you can’t see.

When you're at the store and you have to pick between 2 items you are much more likely to buy said item from a brand that's familiar(you heard their name in ads) than from a brand you never heard of.
Although I feel like this trick is used a lot more in TV since you can't have personalized ads there.

I once thought the same but now I’ve come to the realisation that even if you hate a certain brand or product, you *will* think about it if you’re ever in need of something related to that brand or product and that is what’s advertising is all about. Don’t underestimate the power of repetition and how it affects the population at large. We are all trained from a young age to prefer certain things and brands. If you want to know more about how this came about and how it works, read Edward Bernay’s book “Propaganda”.

I get advertisements for mobile games, and while I am a mobile game researcher since 2015, heck, even I pay Microtransactions for sake of "research", I don't need to see Royal Match a thousand times when I already investigated it and found out "it is the same game as candy crush, but prettier graphically!". I already investigated 50 mobile games out of... 10,000 and let me tell you that Lords Mobile, and Evony: The King's Return are just ... The most predatory Money Farms I have ever seen, pretty, but predatory 😮‍💨

Remember when they added or had the yellow bar to show when an ad was coming up so you could skip over it and go back to miss the ad. They removed that nice quality of life feature a while ago along with basically adding two ads to every time ad plays. I miss when UA-cam had one ad at beginning and one at the end that was nice.
Also I love the audacity of UA-cam to play an ad on me while I had a video PAUSED for like 5 minutes. That only happened once but the audacity of it is mindboggling.
It is also incredibly scummy to update TOS, again fucking over smaller creators that likely don't have the platform or influence to speak up about it or contacting bigger creators to speak out for them. They are basically saying you aren't big enough for us to worry about but we will take all of your money anyway.
I hate that UA-cam has become cable with ad frequency, ad disrupting content, and the sameyness of them. If showing me ad for x product that I had no intention of buying didn't work, what do you think showing 10 to 20 of them every day will do? And yes the scam ads and general low quality ads are a big problem. UA-cam will basically let anyone advertise on their site in pursuit of profit.

There is actually an easy work around to avoid ads on YT. Simply scroll over the video you want to watch and press the volume unmute button in the top right corner. The video should start playing on its own. Don’t click into the video otherwise you’ll be forced to watch ads. It only sucks a little bit because you can’t enjoy the full screen. But definitely it sucks when you try to listen to an album on the road, ad after ad after ad… It really ruins/ diminishes the whole experience. I just talked about this yesterday. I get inundated with a specific ad from a political pac that wants to see a certain former president exit the race and that if he runs, current president wins and America loses.
I do not care where you stand on this. I see this video 7-10 times an hour and I don’t watch political videos, I watch wrestling rumor and action figure collector videos and I constantly get these awful political ads.

I’ve been watching YT since 2007: UA-cam has always been quietly ramping up the ads from my perspective.
From the small banners at the bottom of the video, to the one skippable ad, to the sometimes unskippable ad, to the added midrolls, to putting ads on videos from creators who aren’t monetized, to the two ads in a row, and, in the last month, having to manually skip both ads. It has felt especially different since the adpocalypse and since the rise of AI (and, as a result, scam ads) in 2023.
Honestly though, this is good for me. I want to cut back on my YT usage (as a consumer, not as a content creator) and this is the perfect catalyst for that.

I come back to UA-cam at the beginning/ end of every month since that's when most of my favourite creators post, but otherwise I don't use UA-cam.

UA-cam has a horrible ad experience. It completely ignores all of my sensitive topic categories. Ads are tossed in the most random categories. Weight loss ads are hidden as "fun tests and silly surveys." I've had mail order bride ads from Cyprus, lots of religious ads, lots of politics, and the worst offender of all; Temu. Mobile Game ads can be really gross as well, with Mafia style games where the first seconds of the ad is a "hottie in jail", or a tower defense game with a little guy pooping on a toilet (???? Most confusing ad ever) I report and block so many ads. Sometimes I have to block an ad several times before I stop seeing it, so I am pretty sure they are paying to upload identical ads multiple times. The ads are often offensive and completely out of control.
EDIT: OMG, I commented before I watched the video and sure enough, there is that tower defense game that I was talking about at 1:52. At least the one you showed wasn't the little blue haired fighter guy taking a dump.

Consider watching youtube on a machine that allows an adblocker, instead of only on a phone. At least you get to enjoy all the content instead of it being a highly frustrating experience. Let the content creators use their own product placement and ads in the video and let google make money of their data instead. (which they are already doing and is way more profitable than any ad revenue will ever be)
