Ahhhh.. memories. That was my first Tesla. Sadly, at my weight and age I could no longer get in and out of it easily. I had to go to a Model X due to body mobility issues. You certainly started out with the best ride for a Tesla. It is so sporty and grippy on the road. Geez, it was such a great feeling to drive it! I also miss the portrait control screen. The early Model S had a notoriously bad MMC module that Tesla should replace, so make sure to research that through the VIN. For battery longevity, leave it plugged in every night and set your daily charge max to 60% or maybe 70%. There are many, many videos with varying opinions, but Lithium Ion should not be charged to max too often. Enjoy!
Since he has Theater Mode, that *should* mean he has the MCU2, so the MMC module should have been replaced as part of that. upgrade Nice score getting an older tesla that already has the MCU2 upgrade.

So I bought a 2015 model S with 162,000 miles on it last September and I’ve put maybe 15 max 20,000 miles on it. It is the best car I’ve ever driven. It has free unlimited supercharging and I paid about $20,000 cash for it. Did I overspend on it, maybe but honestly it has been one of the best and most reliable cars that I’ve ever had. I don’t necessarily worry about the battery going bad. I personally think that the batteries on Tesla’s last somewhere between 300 and 400,000 miles on it and I can see myself driving that car for at least another five years if not another 10. Do I recommend people to go and buy an almost decade, old electric, no not for most people. For me, it has been one of the best purchases of my entire life and the flexibility of being able to just hop in the car and have it go is fantastic. I supercharge it 100% of the time because I live in an apartment and I charge it once a week Welcome to the family of owning a car from the worst human on the planet. F him. But the cars are great.
Congrats! I also got a used Model S two years ago. A few things: The value of software is often not recognized in used car prices. If a used Tesla has FSD (full self drive), that's a $15K option that might not be in the used car price! If you have native Apple Music and Podcast, your Tesla probably has had a computer upgrade. Very important to check what rev the computer hardware is in a used Tesla. My used Tesla needed a computer upgrade ($2500) to be able to get a lot of the newer software features. (Ended up upgrading it because the entire computer when dead after a few months). For mounting an iPhone, I went with a suction cup and long flexible arm that holds the iPhone higher-up so it doesn't cover the air vents at all. You do have to route the wire around the steering wheel, but I found a mount where I could replace the cheap friction clamp holder with the "head" of a Belkin Qi charger car mount. Lastly, for those that want a warranty, there is one third party warranty company that will issue used-car warranty for Tesla's, most standard used-card warranty companies won't touch it. Broken door handle, which Tesla S is notorious for, will cost like $800 or more otherwise and they cover battery pack replacement if it degrades more than the Tesla stated specs. that's $12K alone to replace the battery system. Tesla navigation is actually nice, once you get used to it. Best tip - figure out how to "share" an address from your iPhone directly to the Tesla. When you don't have to manually enter destinations into Tesla nav, it takes most of the pain of not having CarPlay away.
@@Trust_but_Verify Every car company can do auto lane change and other driver-assist features (or at least they should be able to). FSD is what Elon has promoted as the secret sauce magic of Tesla, I don't think they are there yet and IDK if they can get there. don't get me wrong, still a great car - but nobody should buy for FSD alone or pay a lot for it unless they know what they are getting.
That’s awesome!! I love my 2018 Model 3. It never once gave me any issues! Also no maintenance cost besides the basics like tires. You’re gonna love it! Enjoy your new ride 😊
Welcome to the fam. I use the battery percentage. Got to love not going to the gas station to fill up. You just plug up when you get home and a full battery everyday.
Congrats on the Tesla! I actually got a 2014 model S recently and love it. One thing for the center console you could do is try to find a second gen insert online like the TAPTES insert. My car had the tesla version of this already but there are plenty of aftermarket ones that mimic the official one although they are more expensive than the rubber inserts you were looking at. There also might be similar ones for the rear where the newer model s’s got the cup holders in the back of the center console area.
It might be better to do miles for a bit till you have good feel for the range and how it can fluctuate, then switch to battery percentage. Keep those tires in tip top shape. Know that each person in the car can weigh it down and reduce some range a bit. If you have heated seats, lean on that for your heating instead of blasting heat in the winter. It’s good that you got a 220 outlet, it’ll charge up quick. You don’t always have to charge though, if you have good enough range for an emergency run, let the battery have a break if you’re not going anywhere tomorrow. Like an iPhone, the battery needs to be between 80-20%. Overnight charging on a 220 will definitely get 100% all of the time.
Former Tesla Tech. It's advised to use battery percentage rather than miles because miles is highly dependent on driving habits, commute, temperature, terrain, ect. Percent Tage will give you a more accurate reading to go off of. Also charging to 100% is fine on like road trips but for day to day use its advised to charge only to 85%. Enjoy your new ride.
As a former Tesla Tech you should know, that the range ist just the capacity converted to a distance by a given Consumption Number. So it is actually NOT based on driving habits or temperature.
100% do the percentage on the dashboard. Trust me I did mileage for a couple months and all it did was give me anxiety when I drove about my mileage going down now I charge it when it hits about 20% up to about 80% and just kinda keep it within that range.
Aye I had that very same model! You’re going to really enjoy it! But due to its age I would advise you get a aftermarket warranty, Car shield who I use and they actually do cover Tesla’s, trust me repair cost can be very expensive but other than that great car and again welcome to the Tesla club!
The great thing about an 11 year old model S is that it looks just like a brand new model S mini the front bumper. Hardly anyone would know it was 11 years old.
I always keep mine on Percentage instead of Miles. For years now all our devices have used percentage to show battery level, so for me it just seems to make more sense. Also in terms of the car, miles can differ based on driving conditions, so percentage to me gives a more realistic representation of how much power/range you have left.
My 2013 Model S has 188,000 miles on the original battery. We just got back from an over 2000 mile road trip using the free supercharger network. Things are starting to go like the door hinges and control arms but that’s to be expected given it’s 11 years old. Here’s a video of our trip. About to roll 140,000 in our ‘14 MS. It’s still great. Has had some small repairs like wipers, handles, tires. Picked it up right after 2nd battery at 108,000. Should last us a long time to come. We’re in central FL. Would be cool to connect up, our two cars would look identical next to each other. Haha
Well, you've got a lot of good advice here. I will add that if you want to prolong your battery to the max, figure out what your average daily drive is and a lot of short charges, like from 40% to 60% for instance, keeps the varying voltage to a minimum and your battery will love you for it. If you don't drive a lot of miles each day, I would keep that max at close to 75% and that's it. Also, if you know you're going to take a road trip the next day and want to charge to 100%, try to time it so that it reaches 100% near the time you leave. You really don't want the batteries to hold 100% too long as that probably what degrads the batteries the most. I would also not let it go below about 20% or 25% on a regular basis, again trying to keep the voltage from varying too much. This kind of care can result in a battery lasting a very VERY long time. 5% to 100% is fine on road trips since they're not everyday. It's a great buy. I hope it lasts you years. Oh, and I come from a technology background and have owned multiple EVs including two Teslas. Lastly, tire pressure! Keep those tires inflated. Something like this rechargeable one is awesome. Doesn't have to be this brand, but this type: amzn.to/3TO4yeF
Please don’t charge to 100% daily, keep between 80-10 for battery longevity. Also don’t plug and unplug the charger too often. It’s better to get a hardwired wall charger.
I just got a 3m double arm MagSafe holder instead of the vent clip so I’m curious how it holds up in Florida too so I connected it lower to not have wires. One benefit of no CarPlay is you can have standby mode
I’m so tempted to get a used model X under 30k but I heard about some suspension issues and it’s a costly repair and also curious on the falcon door repairs if they ever go out. A model s would be nice as well but might to the safer route and get a model Y
Cool purchase man. I bought my first one last summer (2023) a new Model 3 and I'm so hooked on it. This car turned me into a Tesla enthusiast instantly. Accessorizing Teslas is a lot of fun. They are like iPhones with how many different types of accessories are made specifically for these cars. Before owning mine I would have never considered "modding" a car I owned before--but with this one you get inspired by what you see on UA-cam and online--so personalizing your car will become a thing. Watching this video is crazy to me seeing how the interiors used to look in these cars. The center screen is so much different now. I'm going to bet that since you are a "tech guy" and now own a "tech car" that you too will fall down the rabbit hole. I'll even bet you look into buying a new one within the next year.
Model s batteries are easy to repair any ev shop can do that if you ever need. Look into getting the drive unit oil changed it's good to change that at 100k or so
you'll want to make sure you've performed (or already has been done) - what's called a "coolant delete". It turns out motor doesn't require cooling with liquid, and the seals that hold in the liquid WILL fail. When that happens it will destroy your motor. Look it up!
Congrats! I could be wrong, but wasn’t Tesla offering free charging for life with the 2013 models at their charging stations? If so, that would be transferable to you.
I loved it! I’m curious about the 12 yo battery. How long does it take to go from 0%-100%? Does the battery life still steadily maintain while on a long road trip?
Maybe a newer Model S center console can be retrofitted into this first Gen? Model Y owner here (wife's daily), love my gas cars but Teslas are just so good overall. I've been considering getting one of these older Model S to commute to work so I am definitely subscribing to see how life is with them being this old.
I would update the look, they have aftermarket front bumper and headlights to match 2024 look. U can do it yourself even. The bumper is extremely easy to do.
I just subscribed to your channel and I'm excited to follow your experiences with your used Tesla Model S, as I'm likely to purchase a pre-owned Tesla myself and your journey will undoubtedly inform my decision.
Early Tesla models manufactured in the US only used highest-grade Panasonic batteries, which is why it lasts a very long time. The BEVs that had battery problems like the Chevy Bolt are using Korean and Chinese batteries.
I like miles. I don’t know how much longer I can go with 15% left as an example. The car always update the estimate depending on your driving style and how fast you are driving. I tried percentage and went back to miles. I guess people have different preferences.
I bought this same car about 6 months ago and it’s been great I had to replace a head light but that’s been all. The price was similar to what you paid. I also bought the middle insert from Amazon with cup holders lol. There’s a more expensive one that gives you a middle console but it’s like 500 I believe.
These cars are famous with several issues such as motor seals and battery seals. Check them because if the give up you'll have to replace a battery and a motor/s. I think that you check if yours having that issue right now by looking for moisture around the speed sensor.
@@beardfm Just look out for them and check because it can get pretty expensive, pretty quickly unfortunately. I don’t have first hand experience with these Model S but that’s what I heard.
The early version Model S were great for local driving and running errands, however, you will find the slow charging speeds on the early models make for a LONG road trip. Great price though. Should go another 100k without any problems to the battery.
Personally I use percentage over miles for range, miles is a bit inaccurate and tends to jump around a lot. Once you get used to using percentage you can gestimate how much you need.
80/30 - what Elon said for the optimal battery life extender charging percentages charge up to 80% use down to 30% before recharging. If you have a longer trip, it’s fine to charge 100% or have an anxiety, but the 80/30 rule extends the life of the battery cells, 3x or more. Since it’s been exposed that Tesla lies about battery range, I would go with the battery capacity versus mileage estimates. Track yourself for a while of actual mileage and different scenarios and you’ll get a good idea.
@@beardfm I’ve done a lot of research preparing to buy used EV (will be a used Bolt, prices really dropping now) but came across this quote many times. I’ve applied it to my Lectric e-bike charging routine also … and soon my new tri-fold Brompton c-line electric bike (a dream!) Hard to get bikes to 30% though since range much shorter … but 80% always doable w/Home Assistant and a smart plug!
My tip is to always enter the supercharger into the navigation, so that the car will preheat the battery if it needs to so you get the maximum kW. Also, check out ABRP, a Better Route Planner. It can more accurately help you plan out your route based on your car’s battery degradation.
Always use percentages and treat it the same as your phone. Also if you wanted more oomph, you should have gone with a dual motor starting from 2016+. The older ones have 'limited' horse power.
Welcome to the EV club. I drove a Mitsubishi Lancer for 10 years and got a Hyundai Ioniq 6 six months ago. Very different experience. Free DC charging for 2yrs. That’s been great too. Hyundai displays range & percentage at the same time
Definitely stick to battery percentage. There is too much variation in range of an electric car compared to a gas powered vehicle. The trip planner takes into account temperature, wind direction and speed, elevation, real-time traffic, battery temperature and more, and the battery you should have at your destination is displayed in percentage. Keep it consistent, don't let the car lie to you with the distance you can travel, stick to battery percentage and let the car tell you where to charge and for how long on longer journeys. It's best when you mentally frame it like the other devices in your life like your phone or laptop. Edit: If you don't know where to put your phone, you should probably keep it in your pocket and do everything on the infotainment system. It's good enough for the vast majority of people.
A good accessory to your 11yr old Model S could be a 2022 Model 'anything'. Although coming from a Kia soul even an 11-year-old Tesla will seem as an upgrade. Hope you enjoy the car…
Any tesla over a Kia is an upgrade! When dealing with an older model you will have to deal with less …cup holders & charger connections .etc.. it’s not NEW!!! But it’s a tesla and you will continually be upgrading … no more oil changes, gas, noises etc….you will save money! I waited a long while till i got my LRMY!!! And i bought it at the high!! I’m not happy about that…..but i will always be happy with my car!… you will learn about the haters who have no clue! They keep thinking we are forcing these cars on them….!! Just enjoy it…. Only charge to 100% when taking road trips….. I’m in south florida……so i hope you have a garage…..that is my one regret>>>. I have a villa with no garage…. When there is a heat warning….i have to pull out my car umbrella… they really don’t know how long the batteries will last…..you may want to take it to tesla to have them look at the condition….& they could tell you! My coworker bought a 2014 model s and he is very happy! The only thing he had to buy was some kind of module..i think he paid about $1200….and the car is fine……yours looks like it was well cared for……so good choice!! Have fun & enjoy your savings!
Good luck. Unlike a gas car, which you can possibly own for several decades and never need to replace the engine. A Tesla is 100% going to need a new battery at some point. I feel its better to buy a newer Tesla and sell it before you need a new battery than to buy an old one and be stuck replacing it for around $20,000
A reburb from Tesls costs 20k$ without a core, 12-15k$ with a core. You can get used ones for half the price of that. Personally I am waiting for someone to do a aftermarket LFP battery. 😅
At 4:50 I notice there was a supercharging fee. It was to my understanding that the free supercharging stayed with the car, therefore other owners will get them for free as well. So curious as to why there was a fee.
Yea but some people are exploiting that. There's a UA-camr who bought 3 model S and took out the super charging/transferred it to his 3 Tesla's. He dumped the old model S back into the market.... An average buyer doesn't know anything so he makes his money back, atop of the free chargering. Overall the car ends up being free since they'll use 50k worth of super charging (another UA-camr said that, he said the car paid for itself. He used up 50k worth of super charging since 2013)
Nah I don't recommend it, get a newer Tesla.... My coworker got a 2014 model S with 70k miles. The battery needed a replacement after 8 months which cost $16k. He did that. 1 weeks later the powertrain/power train didn't work/car didn't turn on. They told him it'll be $9k to fix.... He might sue Tesla. It was working when he dropped it off. The repair guy admitted sometimes when you fix 1 thing it will trigger other things to break since it's an older car. The new battery replacement triggered something in the engine to break/not turn on.
Thank you for telling me that I never see one where I live now I see a Tesla model Y but not a Tesla model S the older one I was thinking for getting the Tesla model S or the Chevy bolt ev thank you
After taxes and dealer fees it would have been closer to $8,000 more, and my father-in-law has had a 2014 Model S for 5+ years and it's still going strong. If anything happens will keep you posted!
Well that depends if your going to use $16k worth of super charging... My coworker bought a 2014 because it came with free super charging but the battery died on him. So it cost $16k to replace it. 1 week after that the power train went out. They told him it'll be $9k to fix. So all that headache becuz he wanted free supercharging lol... All together that car has cost him $52k

Is there self driving on this version of the tesla or does it just have lane keep assistance?
i’ve got a model 3 (2023) and def recommend battery percentage.
I’m so tempted to get a used model X under 30k but I heard about some suspension issues and it’s a costly repair and also curious on the falcon door repairs if they ever go out.
A model s would be nice as well but might to the safer route and get a model Y
How have I not known about Carupride?!?! I’m getting one for my 2008 Jeep Wrangler.
Oh, love your new(old) Tesla!
I loved that car when I had it all those years ago, I then got a model 3 in 2017 and recently purchased a 2024 model x! Great car.
Which one do you like the most, I kinda don't like the model X roof. I like the model y/3 all seamless roof/clear glass roof.
I loved it! I’m curious about the 12 yo battery. How long does it take to go from 0%-100%? Does the battery life still steadily maintain while on a long road trip?
Will be taking it on a longer trip soon. Charges fully in about 9-10 hours
Maybe a newer Model S center console can be retrofitted into this first Gen?
Model Y owner here (wife's daily), love my gas cars but Teslas are just so good overall. I've been considering getting one of these older Model S to commute to work so I am definitely subscribing to see how life is with them being this old.
Been looking at the Y for my wife as well! Getting something that can hack CarPlay onto these Model S's and will follow up...
@@beardfm you can't go wrong with a Y, really good daily
I would update the look, they have aftermarket front bumper and headlights to match 2024 look. U can do it yourself even. The bumper is extremely easy to do.
Good luck bro
Nice to see you and your “new to you,” Tesla
I bought this same car about 6 months ago and it’s been great I had to replace a head light but that’s been all. The price was similar to what you paid. I also bought the middle insert from Amazon with cup holders lol. There’s a more expensive one that gives you a middle console but it’s like 500 I believe.
These cars are famous with several issues such as motor seals and battery seals. Check them because if the give up you'll have to replace a battery and a motor/s. I think that you check if yours having that issue right now by looking for moisture around the speed sensor.
Haven't seen any of those issues just yet, but if anything happens will be updating here on the channel for sure.
When will you be doing an update video on this Tesla?
Soon! Just hacked CarPlay into it
Damn that’s an awesome price you got it for 👌🏼
80/30 - what Elon said for the optimal battery life extender charging percentages charge up to 80% use down to 30% before recharging.
Interesting, was charging to 85% but will bump it down to 80!
Great video! How much is the insurance cost as compared to your Kia?
Pretty similar actually. State Farm in Florida is about $203
Congrats on the car! Set it to percentage and then calculate range based on your consumption.
Ah gotcha, definitely using percentage.
Welcome to the EV club. I drove a Mitsubishi Lancer for 10 years and got a Hyundai Ioniq 6 six months ago. Very different experience. Free DC charging for 2yrs. That’s been great too. Hyundai displays range & percentage at the same time
Love the car Stephen. Very happy for you. Enjoy!
Appreciate that! I'm enjoying it!
Yes! Keep it at percentage. Your miles will fluctuate as you drive. I personally think going off of miles is inaccurate. Go off of percentage.
They make devices built for tesla to bring a auto and carplay to main screen... there usual little boxes that you just plug in usb
what was the price in2013 new?
Enjoy your new car.
appreciate it!
Congratulations, you will enjoy driving an electric car, the model S is the luxury model. I really like your presentation talent.
Appreciate that a lot. And I'm enjoying it for sure!
Unlimited charging ?
Are any self driving or driving assistance features present in a 2013 Tesla?
This is my question also. Funny Stephen didn’t mention that.
Not in this one.
AP1 came in 2014
Always % ;) i only change to km/miles when i'm charging to 100% and want to see if it has degraded.
Lucky it already has MCU2. I’m looking at buying a salvage 2015 S 90D with 270K miles.
I really prefer the screen layout of the older teslas, the model 3 having no screen directly behind the wheel just feels so wrong.
A good accessory to your 11yr old Model S could be a 2022 Model 'anything'. Although coming from a Kia soul even an 11-year-old Tesla will seem as an upgrade. Hope you enjoy the car…
Enjoying it so far!
⭐ I hacked CarPlay to work in this Tesla...but there's a catch. See the video here: ua-cam.com/video/Tdxa0JF9b6w/v-deo.htmlsi=nQ0nt1uOuXTR4TbV
Can't wait to see the updates on this one
May try to hack CarPlay into it!
Nice buying. We are on the 2016 S and loving it. Did yours came with free supercharges lifetime?
Thanks! No free lifetime unfortunately but charging at home mostly.
@@beardfm make sure to have some check to see if needs the coolant delete on the LDU to avoid a failure.
RIP servicing cost
How many miles does it have? You might have mentioned it, but I missed that 😅
Great condition!
Great video!!!
Thanks Mom 🙂
Asking out of curiosity how did you manage with three kids in a kia soul?
“driving with 1 foot”? you used to left foot brake before???
Regenerative brakes you need less press on the brakes
“One pedal” more accurately
I use miles, but it’s easy to switch to percentage.
Good luck. Unlike a gas car, which you can possibly own for several decades and never need to replace the engine. A Tesla is 100% going to need a new battery at some point. I feel its better to buy a newer Tesla and sell it before you need a new battery than to buy an old one and be stuck replacing it for around $20,000
Source: trust me bro
A reburb from Tesls costs 20k$ without a core, 12-15k$ with a core. You can get used ones for half the price of that.
Personally I am waiting for someone to do a aftermarket LFP battery. 😅
Happy for you. But I would never ever buy electric car voluntarily.
Search hidden features for your S. I just learned you can share your gps to your tesla so you wont have to retype the location
At 4:50 I notice there was a supercharging fee. It was to my understanding that the free supercharging stayed with the car, therefore other owners will get them for free as well. So curious as to why there was a fee.
I love my 2015 model s!
Free Tesla Supercharging for the life of the car, right?
From any Kia Soul to any used Tesla, is like upgrading an iPhone 1 to iPhone 16...
Bought 2014 model s also under 100k miles for 22k.
11 years ago seems like ages ago.. Time goes by quick in a Tesla!
Hopefully it'll last another 10 years 😅
Didn't they give free supercharger access to these for life on this car?
Yea but some people are exploiting that. There's a UA-camr who bought 3 model S and took out the super charging/transferred it to his 3 Tesla's. He dumped the old model S back into the market.... An average buyer doesn't know anything so he makes his money back, atop of the free chargering. Overall the car ends up being free since they'll use 50k worth of super charging (another UA-camr said that, he said the car paid for itself. He used up 50k worth of super charging since 2013)
Ha do you like the Tesla model s the 2013 do you recommend one for first Tesla I don’t know what to get first I hope you love it I will love my Tesla
I've been enjoying it! If you can afford newer, I do really like the Model 3 and there are decent deals on used ones.
Thank you for telling me that I never see one where I live now I see a Tesla model Y but not a Tesla model S the older one I was thinking for getting the Tesla model S or the Chevy bolt ev thank you
I keep mine in percentage.
Do you miss CarPlay?
Absolutely. BUT may have found a hack…video on that soon!
That’s when they looked the best ❤😊
You should have spent the extra $4500 and got the model 3, the used evs have a 4k tax credit too Those old model s have a lot of problems
After taxes and dealer fees it would have been closer to $8,000 more, and my father-in-law has had a 2014 Model S for 5+ years and it's still going strong. If anything happens will keep you posted!
Battery percentage
New Tesla owner of the M3 LR in March. I love this car.
I purchased the refreshed '24 model
Nice! Love those Model 3's
I’d only buy an old Tesla if it still had free supercharging.
