    Hi Rhys, I stumbled across your channel a couple of days ago and have been loving your no BS approach and thoughts on mixing and mastering. You're putting a lot of other music production content creators to shame. Also bonus points you are a fellow Aussie!
    I've recently jumped back into recording in my home studio and have been a little overwhelmed at how much production and technology has changed in the last ten years. Its been good watching your videos to put some of the confusion aside and focus on the fundamentals.
    In regards to Logics mastering tool, it's been very useful for my recordings as I'm more an enthusiast rather than a pro, and no doubt that's who this is aimed at. Ive found the punch setting the best for my indie-pop-rock style, I aim for -9 loundness and avoid the excite feature, and just a little bit of spread. However mastering is an art form and no matter how good AI can get, you cant beat an experienced mastering engineer

      Hey mate! Thanks very much! Yes maybe I was a little hard on the poor mastering assistant haha it’s definitely a useful for anyone chasing a quick polish, but like you said, can’t beat a proper master from someone who knows what they are doing! Thanks for the comments mate!

    I've been messing the the mastering plugin on a silicon MBP. I've found that I've steered away from using the "Clean" Character setting. The "Punch" setting seems to be the loudest, though I've still found myself additionally using a mastering eq along something like with The Wall from Boz Digital for making a master that's stupid loud. Regardless, it definitely doesn't take the place of a solid mastering chain. However, I do like it just to get something in the ball park.

    Yeah Logic’s mastering isn’t great. But I tried all of the AI style mastering assistants and all of them with the exception of Ozone 11 get that EQ curve pretty wrong. I have bit of a hunch what’s happening in all of them though… because they are matching a pre defined curve for each genre (basically pink noise curve with a genre specific curve) what the digi eq tries to do in make the mix match that curve regardless of what it sounds like. But the problem with this approach is depending on what key the song is in it will have natural peaks and troughs at frequencies based on the fundamentals and harmonics of every key. So what its effectively doing is “trying to push notes/frequencies” that don’t naturally belong in that key. I think that’s why the eq sounds weird because it’s like having the beating effect when two notes are closely out of tune. That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it! 😜

    • @spinlightstudios

      I’m telling you…it’s freaky how similar we think about so many aspects on music…must be cause we’re both drummers first? Even you approach and plugin choices and reasoning…it’s uncanny. It’s like your me on a 10 year 10 year delay?! 😂

    It's a shame you can't try out other Characters. I find the only reasonable way to get a modern today's master is... Shocker alarm! Transparent one! :D That only character that touches least the track, in terms of saturation and you get more transparent, not colorised master. But I agree, that Mastering Assistant is not really magic one :/ Yeah, it can help out new fellas that are new to mastering and don't aim for super loud masters, it's free (well, relatively, if we take in a account Logic PRO X purchase), so I think for getting a free update with new feature is just great, you can't really complain about it, but it's just doing ok job, but not great. Not really reliable for professionals, doing masters for living.
    P.S By the way, that Loudness knob. Just pay attention how it affects the track, it only sounds ok, around 12-14 dB LUFs. With every song if you crank that knob even more, it's get distorted right away. This let me thinking, maybe Apple's intention behind this is to give out the tool that newbies can master at the specific LUFs loudness level that's suitable for streaming platforms, since today majority is putting their music mainly/or only to mainstream music platforms with that -14 dB LUFs normalisation, anyways? I might be wrong, but it's just seems that way.

      @@spinlightstudios I’m hoping to get started this weekend, but thanks to your vids I’ll also be trying out Ozone (Elements at least, maybe the trial of the full version) and building a chain of mostly stock plugins.
      I’ll try to comment back to update what I find - but super helpful to have some educated ears (yours) making a great comparison video as a starting point

    If you create a cycle, the mastering plug in will only analyze the cycle section. Personally, I think it does a pretty good job if you select the loudest part of the mix. It does give a decent "reference" of EQ. Agree, the Excite button SUCKS! I also add some additional processing after the mastering plug in to taste. EQ, Compress, minimal clipper, 2 brick wall limiters. If you like to tinker, master it yourself or pay. 99% of the listeners will not have a clue. That's the part this youtube producer/mix/mastering club doesn't seem to get. If the end user (listener) likes it, who cares how it gets done. :) Mastering, IMHO, is over-rated.
    I try very hard to make the premaster mix that only needs volume. Isn't that the magic of "mixing?" For a beginner/novice this plug in is "OK".
    NO mastering artist would ever use this, but there are plenty of high school kids that will be able to impress with just this. Especially if they are creating EDM/Dance music. If the song is great, someone will come in and re-master. Deadmau5 could care less about mastering. Pink Floyd cares a TON about mastering.
    Your mix video is a classic example of using your ears and relatively simple moves to make something sound good.

    • @spinlightstudios
      @spinlightstudios  6 місяців тому +1

      My goal is always to make the mix sound as finished as possible so there is less to do in mastering - ideally just adding volume and some slight EQ tweaks.
      Yes, useful for beginners and anyone who wants a quick fix - but there is better options IMO for that kinda thing!
      The excite button should be called a “distort” button lol
      Thanks for watching and appreciate your opinion!

    • @TheBrassElephant
      @TheBrassElephant 6 місяців тому +1

      @@mickbuffalo sure, but when mastering a full album or EP or cohesive body of work, it's common practice to pull all mixes into a single session to be able to treat them individually, but also be able to listen to them compared to each other, in order to bring the project closer in sound as a whole

      @@TheBrassElephant yep true, I have been used to using Motu DP and PTools for about 25 years and set up my album mixes like you said, so I’m pretty new to Logic and the mindset of AI in the controls. Not sure I like all the automated stuff but it’s the way tech is going now.

    I’ve been mastering for 10 years. 50% that’s the quality of logics mass assistant. I’m a max logic user. I tested this feature for a couple of months when it came out last year. The most negative review of this plug-in. The transparent setting is the best to me. Of course you can’t check that out. It is free so you can’t expect much I suppose but it’s not as bad as you’re finding. In my opinion.

      Hey Bob, just telling it how I experienced it. IMO it’s just didn’t seem that good. I like logic and have been using it forever - but I’m remaining subjective and not just praising it cause I’m a logic user. Perhaps the other modes are better but they have cut off intel users 😂 when I move up to a new Mac I’ll retest them. If others find it helpful and useful that’s great 😃

    to be honest your starting point with your mix sounded a little bit too finalized and too compressed to my ears, that's why the mastering assistant was probably struggling to keep the dynamics of it.
