This is great advise, and something folks who haven't operated larger cameras might miss out on without realizing it, and spend a lot more money on gimbals instread of learning the craft of operating. I like to explain this to folks questioning the larger camera builds, especially on steadicam builds by talking about inertia. One of the reasons they are so stable is the inertia of the heavier camera setups. Objects with more mass are harder to move from a resting position, they have more inertia. So when steadicam builds using 30lb plus setups they can get extremely fine adjustments because they are just harder to move from a resting state. This really applies well to handheld, even tripod work. Heavier setups provide much more inertia, and that translates to the weighty feel of camera moves in any direction. That's one reason I like the newer Canon cinema cameras, since they are a good balance of mass and size, a lot like the komodo and even the c70 with a heavy lens. But the C300/500 size is a great fit.

Regarding the C70, it was actually too light for me still. Got micro jitters with it when trying to balance it in hand from the top handle. It could Prbly use a cage at least to really get it pass that threshold.
@@cammackey Agreed and thank you! I think the C70 can feel little better with a larger battery, metal handle, lens adapter and larger zoom lens (i use it with the 24-105 f4 a decent amount and it's ok). But it doesn't have the feel the C300 gives me, so I prefer operating with the C300 and using the c70 stripped down for gimbal or motion controlled setups where lighter weight cameras keep the builds a little smaller and easier to rig or setup as a solo operator. I think that's why back in the day I always preferred DSLR's with at least a battery grip and something to press your face against like a z-finder etc etc. Points of contact make a big difference in those setups. I think another really technical thing people forget about to is the character of motion blur. Like when you throw a weighty camera around, the easing on the top and bottom of moves with a massive camera is so much more smooth vs smaller cameras. And IBIS or stabilization can never really approach that intentional motion blur feel. Keep posting man, this stuff is great.

I for a budget issue had to buy a lightweight dslr but I quickly added a cage with top handle, a nice heavy lens, an external monitor and now the system is thinking enough to shoot handheld.Anyway your dog, "woman" if I understand correctly, is very cute and patient!
Yes! I love it! Simple, weighty gear gives you everything you need - great video - thank you! Also, if you don't have weights - use your camera rig (expensive dumbbells) but slow and controlled gets you used to the weight. Just don't go dropping them at the end of a set.

Yep on point....I am using legs as a slider a lot....i also rotate upper body for a parallax to enhance the movement of foreground....combined with ibis is it can get tricky but alway better to have ibis off than not to have it.... but! Is also good to own slider! Not all is run n gun..... very nice videos
100% agree with what you have said in here. Heavier camera is almost always better for stability even on a gimbal. Way too much emphasis has gone to light small cameras being easier to use. Currently struggling between Komodo or C70 your videos have been very informative.

Great advice mate, although you may look bit odd doing it, it gets stellar results! How do you go about pulling focus or setting focus for your run and gun type conditions. I've briefly borrowed the M4 for filming slow motion Wildlife on long lens (which blew my mind with the quality vs my R6, the M4 is definitely on my wishlist). But I'm not so experienced with wide filming, especially people, or walk and talk type shots.

Good job! I have been shooting hand held for 40 years and can affirm your comments, especially on weight. Weight is your friend in a hand held environment. I have never used a gimbal on a production shoot and that includes 30 years on network TV and Documentary work.

I love getting those low high energy shots too during our hikes (also to promote some socks 😁). Any tips on shooting in a similar style but without an extra monitor to look at during low angle shots? I was looking at getting a titlta side handle like yours merely for the strap I think is great and gonna take a lot of pressure off of my wrist. Could you share please the exact model of this side handle and how you rigged it on the Komodo? Does it go with the Smallrig Cage? And do you actually use it as a follow focus too? Thanks a lot man!!

For example a FX3, would you recommend turning stabilization off and lens IBIS?
Depends on what you’re shooting. I keep it on for telephoto shots. For photography I keep it on. If my camera isn’t rigged I keep it on. If my camera is rigged and has some weight, I can turn it off. If it’s bother me, I turn it off. If I need it, I turn it on. There’s no science or rules to it.
I didn't see it in the description but what side handle are you using?
2 Tips comes into my mind tht are maybe helpful. Shoot 60P and use wide angle lenses.
I'm sad my a7iii rig is too light for the external monitor. I need to figure out how to add weight to it. It's great with the top handle and the cage with a heavy lens but if I add the monitor to the top it gets unbalanced again. I totally wasted my money on a gimbal before I got a cage and handles. Should have just gone with that first.

Totally unrelated to R&G and handheld, you prefer the Portkeys monitor over SmallHD with red control?
Haven’t tried the smallhd. Love my portkeys but I’m rocking a 7 inch now and can’t imagine going back to a smaller size. Hopefully portkeys eventually releases a 7 inch. I just need a record button, don’t need anything else
