I use a belt as a fourth point of support along with bracing my elbows against my torso, and it gives me incredible control. It's strange that no one talks about this or uses it.
@@BeyondTheGame_E This is difficult to explain. I suggest you try it yourself. For example take a lens with an 85mm focal length and try to shoot an object while only using your elbows pressed against your stomach for support. Then, add a belt as an additional point of support and try to shoot the same object again. You will be very surprised. I have a BMPCC 4K camera and fully manual lenses, so I know what I'm talking about since I don't have any stabilization assistance at all. :)) Part of the load will be distributed to the strap, another part to your elbows and stomach, and your camera will feel even more stable. With an 85mm lens, I can shoot almost as steadily as with a 16mm lens.

I'm just trying to film my twin boys basketball games. I have a Canon R 6 mark II with the 70 to 200 L lens. I have been experiencing all the shaking problems you mentioned. Maybe I need a different lens. This video is super helpful. Thank you.
Happy to help! But I don't think you necessarily need a new lens un less you think the 70-200mm focal length is overkill. It is nice to be able to get close-up shots. I would say, start by staying closer to 70mm and practice the tricks mentioned in the video. The more comfortable you get, the more you can start zooming in as you get better at it. Or you can also get a tripod.
@@BeyondTheGame_E The only reason I say a different lens is when I'm court side 70mm is so close that all I get is their head and shoulders. I watch another person filming with a 24mm right under the basket. His videos were really good.
Ah yeah well that’s the dilemma of sports videography. You can rarely cover everything in high quality with one single lens. Different situations call for different lenses. But the 35-150mm I used in this video is a good all-rounder for basketball.
Would love to see wide frame original shots vs what they look like after edits (assuming the edits include zoom). I'm struggling to understand if I'm too narrow while shooting, or just not good at it and get the shakes you described.
They were a couple zoom ins in the basketball edit in the middle but everything else was the original frame size. The more you zoom in, the more difficult it gets so start wider and gradually zoom in as you get better.
Well i thought this is basic knowledge, i use my face as the third point of contact since my camera has an nice big eyepiece. I find it too that videokameras work better for sports filming than dslr cameras plus i would say that a shoulder mount is the best way to get steady shots of sports, like sometimes one needs to pan super quickly and the there is nothing that works as well as a shoulder mount. I film mostly extreme sports like skating, bmx, rollerblading and car racing/drifting and close shots can be a split of a second and the fact that my face and the upper body is main point of contact i can manoeuvre much faster whit less respons time. But this is all preference and muscle memory one can do great work whit almost any tools if done right!
Thanks for the video. Not sure why youtube put it in my feed, but I am glad it did. I am a bit surprised / amazed at how you follow the ball (or the player with the ball) when using autofocus. I would have assumed that one would either track one player (and then focus would be off when following a pass or shot because it would still be tracking the player who HAD the ball), or if not using tracking, then the autofocus would just jump to whichever player is closest. Am I missing something here? Are you secretly using manual focus???
Secretly?? Is shooting manual something to be ashamed of? 😂 jokes aside, I do film manual sometimes but very rarely. When moving away from a player as fast as we do when we follow a pass or a shot, the camera doesn’t have time to focus on players that might be in the background during the camera movement. So since I film at F4, as long as the ball is roughly as far from me as the player was, it should stay in focus.
I have a sony FDR-AX700 and I'm trying to record ice hockey! The boards mean I have to hold it up higher. Unfortunately my eyesight isn't great, so using the built-in LCD means I lose the puck all the time. I end up using the eyepiece and trying to hold the camera steady with both hands, but my left elbow (some tennis elbow there) gets sore. I'm thinking maybe if I got some video goggles and used the HDMI port maybe I can keep it lower - and maybe get up a bit higher on a bench or stands. Please let me know if you have any other ideas!
Thank you for this video!! I'm just getting into videography, so this helped a ton! I picked up a FX30 and I'm getting into football videography, any suggestions on a lens? I was suggested the Sony 70-200, but with it being crop sensor, it's 105-300 I think!
awesome video! you mentioned you dont shoot with any in camera stabalization or lens stabalisation, so how come your last tip was to get a lens/camera with IBIS? If that was a benefit, wouldnt you use it?
Thank you! But that’s not exactly what I said. I simply mentioned that I was not using stabilization tools in this video specifically. I did that to show that my tips can work even if you don’t have any stabilization in the lens or camera.
@@BeyondTheGame_E oh I misinterpreted! Thanks for the clarification, I’m really impressed by your shots even without IBIS, your non ibis is better than me using IBIS!
When filming basketball and after the ball has when through the hoop, how long do you keep filming the shooter for? I have tried filming basketball but seem to cut short the length of filming after the scoring of the points.
Depends on what I'm going for. If I'm on the baseline and I have a great view of the player's face while he's shooting, I might just stick on him after the release and not go to the basket at all. But otherwise I try to follow the ball as soon as it is released so that it is always in frame.
When zooming with your right hand are you using full time auto AF? I find that it often picks the wrong player especially with a lot of traffic. But maybe my AF point is too big.
The purpose of this video is to demonstrate how you can shoot stable footage with any camera and no help from stabilization in the lens, camera or computer. That’s why I turned it off, to prove that it was possible.
The technique is the same for any focal length. But at some point you will need some type of support to stay stable. 400mm is extreme and filming handheld at that focal length for more than a few seconds without shakes is almost impossible.
@@BeyondTheGame_E Thanks for the reply. Yes even with a fluid head tripod I try to keep the action I am shooting within few seconds. I will be experimenting with your method it is very helpful thanks
I don't have a favorite focal length per say. Variety is the key for me. But I always use a full frame camera and make the most of the full frame sensor. Although there is a bit of a crop when I film in 4K/120p.
@@BeyondTheGame_E my shooting style is just like yours mostly handheld. What your opinion about the Smallrig rotating left handle? I probably don't need but I just can't help wondering? Thx!
Thanks for the tips. I got my ZV-E1 two weeks ago and my footage seems jittery, and annoying of course. I noticed that you shot at 1/320 sec. Do you often use this shutter speed? I mean, I'd like to shoot something sharp with less motion blur.
I feel like most sports shooting these days relies on a heavy use of motion tracking in post. How much do you use that in your work? Isn't that also a big factor in smoothing out footage?
The main reason for that is the popularity of vertical videos. You kind of have to do some sort of tracking to keep your subject in frame if you filmed horizontally. That's what I use tracking for anyway. I also use it if I zoom in real tight on a basketball going through the hoop for example.
nice tips, i almost do the same on another field not sports but i always have the ibis on, i see why you do it but on 150 isn't it hard without it? may i ask how you attach the mic on the top handle? it snot visible in the video... keep those videos up
Hey there, I only took ibis off to show how easy it is to be stable with the proper technique. But I usually leave it on standard. Also, the FX3 top handle comes with an XLR audio unit and an attachment for a shotgun mic. You can see it in this video I made about my kit ua-cam.com/video/J6Q4Fkia0OE/v-deo.htmlsi=s18LXSAZy5P-gN60
@@BeyondTheGame_E sorry for this but after i messaged i watched most of your videos and found out about the mic :P, my bad... about ibis it just seemed really strange that you turned it off , thanks for the reply, good day and cheers from Greece mate :)
I only turned it off for the purpose of the video. But if you intend to stabilize your footage afterwards in Catalyst Browse, it is recommended to turn off all stabilization in camera.
@@BeyondTheGame_E I shoot outside at night a lot, and I have to set my shutter speed manually, and I like to also set my aperture manually, so I have to keep ISO on auto due to changing light conditions. I wish I could set ISO manually at native, but I haven't figured out the best settings yet.
I heard you said that you film at 120 fps to slow down the footage in post to fix shakes. What fps do you mostly film sports at? 30 fps? I know the cinematic standard is 24 fps. Also, what frame rate do you set your talking head UA-cam shots at?
@@BeyondTheGame_E Thank you! Your videos are super helpful. Keep up the great work! I have one last question, do you keep your editing project timeline at 120fps or do you reduce it to 24 or 30 fps?
@@ThatMartinezGuy If you want to slow down your footage in post, you timeline' frame rate always has to be lower than the frame rate of your footage. I personally edit in 24fps but you could use 30 as well. Here's a video that explains all of this a little better ua-cam.com/video/Da-bS7a35zM/v-deo.htmlsi=67r192nrpiznJki3
For the purpose of this video I didn’t use any stabilization in camera or in the lens to prove that the method works without it. But if you have access to any type of stabilization, it will definitely help to use it as well.
@@BeyondTheGame_E gotcha. I’m filming horizontal and still trying to make short from vertical videos so I’m trying to learn how to shoot horizontal and still be able to make it look good whenever I crop it to fit a vertical vid for like UA-cam shorts or Instagram reels
@@Grayson_Lewis It's rarely perfect straight from the camera. You usually need to use keyframes in post-production to keep the focus of the action in the middle of your vertical frame.
Why is 4K so important to you? Personally I would shoot in 1080/120 or 1080/60 if I was you. But this technique works at 24 or 30 as well. I would use a higher frame rate mainly for the ability to do slowmo in post.
@@BeyondTheGame_E I believe that 4k in 24fpse brings a better quality....sometimes I use tracker in transitions, and the crop in 4k helps me a lot! But I'll try at 60fps, because lately I can't stand being limited to ronin s anymore lol! Thanks for tips Bro! Crazy channel!

Merci à toi pour le feedback! 👊🏽
what about focus? how you keep everything in focus?
Here's a video I made a while back that explains how to keep everything in focus ua-cam.com/video/4I39Xd6aIt0/v-deo.html
nice tips, i almost do the same on another field not sports but i always have the ibis on, i see why you do it but on 150 isn't it hard without it? may i ask how you attach the mic on the top handle? it snot visible in the video... keep those videos up
Hey there, I only took ibis off to show how easy it is to be stable with the proper technique.
All good 😊 I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos!
@@BeyondTheGame_E you got a new sub for sure :)
Good points
Thank you!
Are there any benefits to shutting off the “steadyshot” or was it just for the purpose of the video?
I only turned it off for the purpose of the video. But if you intend to stabilize your footage afterwards in Catalyst Browse, it is recommended to turn off all stabilization in camera.
Can you do a video for people that are trying to film sports games with a cell phone
iPhone or Samsung
Trying to film basketball games
I have made one already. Here it is ua-cam.com/video/wsy1Lglw5Rs/v-deo.html
So if you have ISO and shutter speed set manually, do you let aperture auto change, or fully manual?
Fully manual.
Excellent advice. Thank you!
Have you ever used a Cine Saddle?
No I never have.
looks like you've been in the gym since you gone back to Canada...think those muscles are help too. 💪
Haha thanks for noticing but still not quite in the shape I once was!
Hi E,
How heavy is your camera setup?
Greetings from Germany
No idea 🤷🏽♂️ but just the lens itself is pretty heavy. Definitely the heaviest lens I’ve ever used.
Thank you so much
You're welcome!
What monitor do you use? I’m looking to get one right now.
I use this one:

Saya pakai hp untuk rekam. Apakah ada saran untuk rekam bagusnya bang?
Just watch this video I made about phone videography. All my advice on the topic is in there: ua-cam.com/video/wsy1Lglw5Rs/v-deo.html
@@BeyondTheGame_E terima kasih banyak bang 🙏🏻
I heard you said that you film at 120 fps to slow down the footage in post to fix shakes. What fps do you mostly film sports at? 30 fps? I know the cinematic standard is 24 fps. Also, what frame rate do you set your talking head UA-cam shots at?
I film all my sport action at 120fps and all my talking head at 24fps.
Wondering how to put that rig and camera together with the vmount battery? Sorry - videography noob here LOL
No worries at all, here's a video about my rig and everything on it ua-cam.com/video/J6Q4Fkia0OE/v-deo.htmlsi=PrfGBqSTrSAQwHFU
@@BeyondTheGame_E 🐐🐐Thank you sir
What ND Filter and which monitor do you use in this?
I use a Polar Pro (Peter McKinnon) mist edition 2-5 VND and a Portkeys LH7P monitor.
Can you do a video like this but for smartphone users instead?
I actually made one already. Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/wsy1Lglw5Rs/v-deo.htmlsi=QQe_re7eWSO1elEK
@@BeyondTheGame_E you're the realest G! ♥
can i do this with no ibis as well ?? iam new to cameras ..
Like I mentioned in the video, I turned IBIS off completely before the game so everything you see is done with no stabilization at all.
@@BeyondTheGame_E great thank you !!
what’s the monitor you’re using on the camera
The same monitor I reviewed in this video ua-cam.com/video/LZ1nhE8N1b4/v-deo.html
Do you pair this with lens stabilization?
For the purpose of this video I didn’t use any stabilization in camera or in the lens to prove that the method works without it. But if you have access to any type of stabilization, it will definitely help to use it as well.
how do you do the slow mo then fast video?
Here’s a tutorial I made that shows exactly how to do it: ua-cam.com/video/tkecgiBoasU/v-deo.htmlsi=Y-Yr-nbERX2yhN3o
2:05 you used stabilization in post. change my mind.
I did not. But are you sure you got the timing right? That's not even part of the game footage.
Is the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 good enough?
It depends what you are filming. It's good enough quality but it's not a big zoom.
@@BeyondTheGame_E I’m filming basketball
@@Grayson_Lewis Well yeah, it's good when the action is close but you'll struggle if it's far away from you.
Thank nice video
Welcome!
Mantab, thnx coach..
Anytips on how you have everyone in focus on the court
I actually just made a video about this topic. You should check it out: ua-cam.com/video/vgBpc2t9Sq8/v-deo.htmlsi=KhgVt34THj_7Ozl1
@@BeyondTheGame_E thank you so much
nice to 60 fps....but in my case, i have the sony a7iii and the 4k work just in 24 or 30fps....lol....yep...its a little be hard...
Are shooting Continues Auto-Focus all the time?
Most of the time. But I do switch to manual focus when it makes sense.
That helps! Thanks for the reply 👍🏻
