  • I had a crazy idea to plant some trees now and when I get older, cut them down, mill them, and build stuff out of the lumber! I want to measure the height and trunk diameter every year so I needed a good way to do it.
I measured the height using proportions of shadows of the tree and me. I calculated the diameter of the trunk with a flexible tape measure and then checked my work with averaging some measurements on my calipers. I can use the calipers now while the trunk is small, but I won't be able to later when the trunk becomes too big.
As always, I am welcome to and appreciate feedback! Enjoy!

Great videos! Really helping me in general carpentry right now. I am curious about the best time of day to measure that shadow though. At the end of the video you mentioned a long evening or morning shadow. Is the longest shadow as opposed to a noon shadow best for this?
