    The reason why those antennas are magnetic and their base is made of alumnium foil is for you to place them into a metallic surface for having a proper ground-plane, which is important on almost any kind of antennas. Make sure to have it looking upward and prerably in the center, with a clear (virtually) path of vision.

    Is there anyway a factory satillite antenna could be wired to a after market unit like this one? I don't have factory nav but have a sirius antenna just wandered if that would work in anyway possible.
    Thanks

    Most don't fit with aftermarket equipment, you would have to compare the connections and find out. You could cut the end and put on the correct one, but that may not be appropriate.

    If they want you to put the GPS antenna on the outside of the vehicle, they should include a shark-fin antenna, rather than a grey plastic box.

    Mounting the gps antenna in the dash can cause interference with other systems. Did it in my truck and my remote keyless entry would only work if I pressed the remote against the window. Plus the antenna was not as sensitive as being on the dash causing google maps to get confused.

    Quick question...I've done what your video suggests with a GPS antenna and it works fine...but why can't I do the same thing with a Sirius antenna? They are both satellite signals, aren't they? Why would a Sirius antenna have to be outside or on the dash versus in the dash like a GPS antenna?

    • @marknasia5293
      @marknasia5293 3 роки тому +3

      the GPS signal is actually a small signal, Sirius is transmitting larger amounts of data, plus the GPS antennae is receive only. The gps normally can work from even a weak signal. The audio being transmitted thru Sirius requires seamless data transfer or else the broadcast you’re listening to will stop/cut off. if the GPS antennae gets interference and goes on and off, it is not as noticeable depending on the refresh rate of the GPS tracking system. In most cases when the GPS signal goes in and out, you don’t notice it.

    That's the easy part. For Beginners, there are two key things missing from this video: 1) How to open up the dash to access the radio ( I know this bit), and 2) How to get the GPS antenna wire from the windscreen mounted GPS antenna through the roof column and down and across to the radio.

    I'm working with your rep Cody, and I am ready to purchase a Kenwood system for my 2014 Tundra. The truck doesn't have GPS and that is the main reason to replace the factory oem radio. In the video you mentioned that the GPS antenna needs to have a clear unobstructed view to the sky. Are you saying that by mounting the GPS antenna to the metal cross bar the antenna is now the entire metal surface? Or did I miss something and need to mount outside. Do you have any tips for mounting a GPS antenna on a Tundra? Thank you so much for answering.

    Hey guys, I just got an RNS510 GPS unit for my 2012 VW Polo TSI. As far as I know, the antenna on my roof is just a radio antenna, so the installer will be putting the GPS antenna in the A-pillar of my car.
    Just wondering if there would be any problems with this, or would it be worth me shelling out a bit more cash to buy a shark fin GPS antenna to go with it? (would also like to know if they need to tear out my roof lining to install the shark fin?)
    Any advice would be much appreciated!

    I've got myself a Toyota gt86/Subaru BRZ/Scion FRS. I recently installed the Sony Xav-712Navx and I put my navigation antenna on the cross bar exactly like you did, but I find the signal is terrible. It takes some time to pick up signal and then drops it occasionally. The navigation system is by TomTom. But I really like it being on that cross bar out of sight... Any suggestions?

      Some Japanese cars come with metal tint windows then the gps signal doesn't pass through your windows,
      So, you have to test your antenna performance before install the antenna inside the car.

    I'm looking at getting the Jensen VX7020 from you and putting it into a 2012 Chrysler 200 Convertible. Two questions for you:
    1) You mention that lower end units do not work with the in-dash mount method - is the Jensen VX7020 considered one of these lower end units, or does it work with this method?
    2) Have you done this in a 2012 Chrysler 200 Convertible? If so, where did you mount the antenna?
    The only reason I haven't ordered is because of the visible antenna mount!

    I'm not sure if this is a stupid question, but is there a front and back to the antenna piece; can the sat-nav think think the car is facing north if you're actually facing south?

    • @FCAutos
      @FCAutos 8 років тому +5

      That's not a stupid question, actually, it's a genuine question. When the car is not moving, the nav system will point the car north (normally) or if you have a decen nav software, it'll point towards the way the street is pointing. If the car is moving, it'll automatically update its location point. Hope that helps. Saludos!

    • @1998gst4611
      @1998gst4611 5 років тому +1

      If you heard in the video he mounted the gps antenna hidden under the dash and facing up towards the sky and reason he did that because he didn't want any obstructions on top of the dash. Sure you can mount it up on the dash and stick it there drill a thru hole for the antenna to feed thru to connect to the radio but if it works just as well mounted under the dash why mount an antenna on the dash? To me it looks tacky for one thing, two its in plain view sight and annoying to look at also invites would be thieves when they see that. You don't see factory equipped nav radios with the gps mounted on the dash, their mounted on outside of the roof or elsewhere hidden in the car.

    If the metal of the car makes for a stronger antenna connection shouldn't it work under the hood connected to some metal since now its using all the metal on the car. Instead of mounting it in the open. Making the car a giant antenna no need for direct sight of the box the entire car is in direct sight

    • @SimonLeBonbonbon
      @SimonLeBonbonbon 7 років тому +1

      Nope, that would be too much metal. The cars chassis is already part of the antenna (mass). The difference between the car and the antenna is the signal.

    • @willbarnz6960
      @willbarnz6960 6 років тому

      Under the hood, where the engine is on most cars, also subject the antenna to higher heat levels than even a closed up car in the middle of summer.
      GPS antenna UNDER the hood is also the wrong side of the hood for the antenna to see any signal. It's totally shielded from the GPS signal.
