Hi Tom I walked it from Lands End 2 years ago for my 70th birthday. When I got to John O’Groats I did not want to stop and got the ferry to Orkney and walked on for another day. I never had any problem wild camping. I stopped late and walked early and tucked my tent out of the way. Enjoy your great adventure
Hi Tom. As I said to U last week, you have decided to join the ‘long-distance’ walking fraternity. So welcome. I’m A huge long-distance walker Tom and have been for more years than I wish to admit here. 😆 The issues you so eloquently describe with tiredness, your legs and feet, been honest, I have not experienced those symptoms. Boots and a size bigger is the secret to preserving those feet Tom. Stick with the crusade and it’ll get a lot easier as routine will enter your days. It’ll be worth the effort in the end. We are so proud of what you’ve done to date so, go for it! Jim
Well done Tom! Your videography is superb! Keep the faith. You can do this. We’re all behind you ❤ That sheep fold reminded us of when you lost a drone!
Tom, this was a good episode. Looking forward to watching your adventures over coming months. Missing Izzy a little in this but your a good bloke and I'm going to stick with you. How do we fund a bothy or B&B for you along the way?
Well done to you ! Enjoy each step, for each one leads to the next and another moment to memorise for the rest of your life. Sending strength from Kernow!
One day at a time... Forget the distance. Enjoy the beauty and before you koow it. You will be gutted youve covered só much distance..i once walked Scotland to Cornwall and back. Averaged 25 milea per day and the only thing on my mind was what was i too do after it finoshed. Enjoy the sun the rain the wind the snow etc😢 2012 miles..... 4 pairs of boots 9 resupply points....2 tents
Tom your an absolute legend, Living your best life I’m currently in hospital with a load of broken ribs and collar bone and this is definitely keeping entertained in a hot hospital bed. Keep it up buddy you are awesome. Jay.
Great film Tom its total isolation. I do not think there is anywhere more isolated than parts of Scotland. From horizon to as far as you can see, no one. I am sure you will enjoy your travel, theres so much to see. I hope you manage to keep a reality check on your own health re the mountains. Please remember with isolation goes risk if you fall, no mobile reception in parts. I say this because of the you route you have chosen up there. Take care...good luck
Cheers Alistair. Yeah the isolation up here is something else! Yeah I have been taking it seriously, an accident in some of these sections really would be serious. Thanks for the support
Best of luck Tom we look forward to seeing your amazing journey. Just keep on putting one foot in front of the other. It would be nice to see some of the interactions you have with people you meet along the way there is bound to be more times when the kindness of strangers will play it’s part. All power to you. Hope Issy is well also and it would be interesting to know how you are editing and making your videos while on the road like this. There must be some technical challenges. Can,t wait til the next update, you are going to be a member of a very elite group of people when you complete your journey.
July 24 2023 Maryland, USA: Been watching you with Iz and your travel up the mountains in some very tough country terrain but as a couple. Now we are on this journey as you walk through some beautiful country. Take care and cheering you on.
Tom been following you guys since the start and I look forward to every video. This new challenge is so different and yet still about what makes you guys. Love the last sentence about whilst everything in the “normal” world is going on this stuff still happens everyday…very simple and thought provoking words 👍
Well done Tom, those shoes are not doing you any favours though!! I was looking at them trying to work out what make they are? Getting through all those lochins must have been tricky, your feet must have been soaking. You’ve made a great start, take care, love your adventure👍👍Cheers Mike 🍷
They are trail running shoes, all the youtube hikers love them. It turns out i HATE them, or at least they hate me, haha. My feet have been wet for about three weeks straight
Smashing it Tom! 🥳🥳 you have got this, we take our hats off to you for taking on this challenge, what an incredible story you will have when you finish. Can't wait to keep up! 🫶
Tom, this is a great start - keep it going! Maybe easier said than done if you don’t have your usual editing facilities- but a redline progress on a map would be great for us viewers!
Yeah I will have to make sure I add them in, as you say it’s kinda hard on the road, but I love maps, so understand the desire, consider them added (after next weeks)
So watchable, great mix of info, self awareness, passion all put together with technical capability and natural flair for a good shot. None of it much use though if the 'star' of the show doesn't have the personality to keep you rooting for them, Tom has that is spades
Tom, your video was very impressive and I just wanted to chime in, that it is totally ok to take a zero day, and let your feet and body recover. Looking forward to your upcoming videos.
Good luck Tom what a fantastic journey you are undertaking, I think we forget how diverse and beautiful Country we live in, look forward to next week. Hope your feet harden up ❤
Tom I hope you make it. Looking forward to seeing your UA-cam videos. But can't help but think there's a competition going on .. ( who gets most view's) loving all the videos Thanks for taking the time to do it
We are following you Tom! You're doing great. Keep going -fantastic video work as usual - must be a pain doing the walk-pasts! What an amazing landscape.
I love making the videos so happy to walk a few extra steps for them shots. I think you can tell when my feet hurt by how many walking shots there are 🤣
Hats off to you Tom, looks incredible out there.. Maybe you should wear a florescent jacket as could be difficult to see you at times i'm guessing. Looking forward to your imminent adventures..🤙
This is going to be an epic series of videos. I am really looking forward to them. I regularly go hill walking all over the Highlands and spent many years in Wales. Safe journey
GREAT... I'll be honest Tom I was unsure how this was going to turn out... but we really enjoyed the video. Keep at it and we will all come along the great journey with you. 👍
Your legs will thank you... if you eat lots if leafy greens like spinach and kale, for magnesium and potassium. avocado, banana, etc. are good as well. Coconut water is also excellent for hydration. Enjoy the journey! 🤗
Fair play to you Tom you’re doing just great just go at your own pace. My sister lives in Gourock if you’re passing through I’ll tell her to give a shout out to you. Will be following you along and good luck it should get easier soak your feet in water daily
Great vlog Tom. The scenery up there is mind blowing. We did most of the NC500 and more in our campervan in May, we already miss it, miles away at home in North Devon. We'll have to look out for you when you get down this way. Best of luck.
Cheers mark, excited to share more of the videos, as you say the mountains are just crazy, and has been amazing walking it, you get to experience some EXTREME remoteness
Great job Tom. Brave man! Wouldn't even pass them houses in my car at night never mind camp in their garden 😂 looking forward to next video. One step in front of the other, no further, you can do it 💪
Good afternoon Tom saw your previous message if your new adventure your first days were hard but I think your getting your sea legs now looks beautiful hi to Lizzie (Linda from New Jersey) see you soon 😘🌸🌼
What an amazing place and experience - well done Tom, looking forward to seeing more - if you have any (or when you get chance) put a layer of vaseline on the blister before you put the plaster on it helps heal and protect it from more friction xx
It is subject to change and I haven’t finished plotting the south west section but: www.alltrails.com/explore/map/full-route-plan-75df636?p=-1&sh=z8npud
Oh boy. We’re just outside Thurso. Wish we had known we could have given you a lift to your start x best of luck with your walk x. Crikey Watton you probably could see our house from there lol. I love Watton
Fantastic Tom, Ullapool Outdoors for different shoes if you need them, or it maybe you need some decent insoles. Also, don't forget to check yourself for ticks, it's easy to ignore an itch thinking its a clegg or midge bite. Take care of yourself.
Well done Tom you are really brave. Good luck. Hope you manage it all. But having seen the two of you in the Himalayas I'm sure you will. Pity Izzy isn't with you, wouldn't be so lonely.
Awe Tom don't kill yourself doing too much. Be good to yourself. Hopefully you will meet up with keeley &Phil as you know they are in Scotland. Looking forward to your journey but take care of yourself. The man who made time made plenty of it. 👍Veronica
Take your time and enjoy. Don't overdue. It looks so neat out there in nature where few travel. Ok, I'm betting that dance was for Izzy. That is something she would do. :)
That was a heck of a lot of horse flies. I'm terrified of those things and always react badly when they bite, to the point where I pack some antihistamines when camping as it helps with the itching and inflammation.
I notice you are wearing Saucony shoes. So did I and I did not have one blister. But I had to buy two other pairs on route. I got my pack weight down to 12 lbs without food and water. To walk light makes such a difference. This included my tent and I took a super light Zepak duplex tent which worked well
Best wishes doing it that way. Saw an idiot today running down the A9 on the carriageway doing the same. Miles of traffic behind him endangering himself and others. Nugget.
I have made a map if you would like to follow along my route:
