P0456 Explained - Small EVAP Leak (Gas Cap)

- The FIXD wireless OBD2 scanner and free app for iPhone and Android translates your check engine light into plain English so you can rest easy. In this video, we explain what OBD2 code P0456 means and possible causes.
P0456 means a small leak in your evaporative system. This is often a super simple fix (hint: it's your gas cap), we do offer some more complex issue breakdowns.
The evaporative emission control (EVAP) system prevents fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. The fuel vapors from the fuel tank are absorbed and stored by charcoal pellets in the charcoal canister. The vent control valve is controlled by the engine control module (ECM) and allows air to flow into the charcoal canister to purge the gas vapors into the engine air intake to be burned. The flow of the gas vapors from the charcoal canister to the engine air intake is controlled by a purge volume control valve. The vent control valve is usually open when the engine is at normal operating temperature, and the purge volume control valve is commanded on when the ECM is ready to burn the built-up fuel vapors.
However, when the vehicle is turned off the ECM performs a leak test to ensure the evaporative emission control system is working properly. During the leak test, the ECM closes the vent control valve and purge valve to seal the evaporative system. If the EVAP system does not maintain the pressure, the ECM recognizes an evaporative emission control leak. In the case of P0456, it is a small-sized leak, smaller than .020” in diameter.

Another example of FIXD proving its value! Great video, thanks a ton for clarifying.
I just got gas so I'm hoping that's the problem. Getting this email was surprising and joyful.
Awesome video! loved the humor additives! 🤣
▫
Love seeing the process to know what all is involved. You know, I learned something today.
▫
🔧 I cleaned gas cap, no joy; man it was gunky! So I bought a new cap, no dice. Back to O'Reilly to see what's next but I fear the other solutions aren't $10 and 5min fixes!! 🧨
I bought one of these Fixd OBD readers in 2021 and thought it was pretty darn good. In fact, I was so impressed that I told all my friends about them and a few of them bought one. Now I've got to apologize to them for the mistake. 2.5 years later all it will tell me is that I have a code PO456 that I already knew that I had. But it will not read wheel speed sensors that create TPMS codes and lights on the dash. And the worst part is now when trying to diagnose my car, all I can get is that one PO456 code and a BUNCH of ads/warnings that a PREMIUM service is needed at the ANNUAL COST OF $99.99. You get what you pay for, or in this case, you don't get what you pay for and expect. If you're looking for a good OBD2 code reader....KEEP LOOKING.
Great video. Very educational.
Any cars without gas cap have a black rubber gasket on the fuel door. In case of fords clean the gasket or if ripped replace it. Also clean around filler neck and push a plastic funnel in neck to open snd close flapper valve . Do this about 5 times in and out .hope this helps
Thank you very informative and also entertaining.
Keep up the good work
Thank you!
I just fixed the problem. Thanks, fixd team ❤❤
Awesome to hear, Gizem! Happy to help :)
Nice video, I enjoyed the funness of it
Dunno if anyone gives a shit but if you are bored like me during the covid times you can stream pretty much all of the new movies on Instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my brother for the last few days xD
@Caiden Zaiden yup, have been using InstaFlixxer for since november myself :D
Be careful. Sometimes when you replace a part and that was not the problem it takes a long time for the code to come back especially when its a small leak at the fuel pump , until it's worse. That is actually the most common cause 2007-2009 Sonatas. When my mechanic replaced mine he insisted on using OEM because he had too many comebacks on aftermarkets with altered design.
I have a 2002 sonata that just got this code 🥲
that was the best damn video ive seen. thanks
Thank you! Happy driving :-)

i need replace the ESIM sensor for erase this code
I, too, have no cap. Ford fusion 2012
check for rotted filler neck , found on 03 sliverado
I had this code about two months ago. Bought a new gas cap and reset the code with my FIXD app. The check engine light came on yesterday and the same code came up. I reset the gas cap but the FIXD app can't seem to reset the check engine light. Up popped the message, "VIN Scan Not Supported, Select or Add Vehicle". What's up with that?
The black rubber gasket only keeps dirt from getting into the filler neck. While that gasket is needed, the actual evap seal is below the trap door. Having a bad rubber gasket in the door contributes to excess dirt and grime being forced into the filler neck during a fill up, so cleaning of that area is essential for proper operation of fhe system. I wish there was a gas cap there.
My mother got the fix obd tool. I love any code scanner. What I absolutly loathe is the FIX commercials claiming mechanics are scamming people and the FIX is the solution. Knowing what a code is doesn't mean you know what the problem is and what it takes to fix it. Each code could have many causes and to think a layperson is going to tell their mechanic how to do his job is ridiculous. Those commercials really turned me off to FIXD. Pretty much all FIXD does is allow people to determine how important a code is.
FIXD makes it sound like your mechanic would be wrong to replace your fuel tank if you got this code. The code doesn't say anything about the fuel tank and yet we know if the top rusted a hole through it this code could be the result. Almost every other code is exactly the same as well. Oxygen sensor codes are also a big one that might not have anything to do with replacing an oxygen sensor. I can see an irate customer right now yelling at her mechanic for replacing a fuel injector when FIXD said the problem was an oxygen sensor. However, mechanics know that a bad injector can cause an improper reading from an oxygen sensor as can a bad sensor and an exhaust air leak etc.
FIXD needs to come up with a better commercial that doesn't mislead consumers.
Replaced the cap and lights still on 2 weeks later.
My gas cap is loose, is there particular cap they sell. If you could give me a tip for Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 2013!
Buy a new one
buy a new one, they're probably like $4 from rockauto.com
Go to a junkyard, take one off a car. Basically free... Or just flip around the O ring on your worn cap.
I bought a new one. It didn't correct the problem.
Pollution caused by vehicle. Nice plug homie.....
I got the same code yesterday. I got a new gas cap today, how long does it take for the engine light to disappear if it was the cap? Im bringing it tomorrow to the mechanic but i just want to make sure im not jumping into mechanic when the code will eventually disappear if the driving cycle is not yet completed.
Update
@@taylorjalicia20 it stayed up. There's a leak in the canister itself. So saving up money to get that fuxed
Changed the gas cap & code still came up
That is because there is a whole list of things that can cause this code and not just one single thing. For instance, the solenoid valve might be bad or the vacuum line to the purge solenoid might have a small hole rubbed in it. Not uncommon for vacuum lines to rub on stuff till a hole develops. I could tell stores about missing or broken clamps on vacuum lines and road debri from dirt, sticks to forks stuck under cars rubbing holes in stuff. Not super common but it happens just the same.
CHECK YOUR NEW GAS CAP FOR A RUBBER O RING,IF IT HAS ONE ,TAKE OLD CAP AND REMOVE O RING CAREFULLY.AND USE OLD O RING ON YOUR NEW GAS CAP.DO NOT REMOVE OTHER O RING.USE IT AS A DOUBLE O RING ON THE NEW ONE.
Never got it looked at codes still comes on vehicle still runs good but my guess says it the leak detection pump
Get some uv die to make sure it's not a leak under the hood. put it in your solenoid tank run the car for about 15 minutes grab a UV flashlight check it in the dark unless you have some special glasses you can check during the day.
I got the same code only to find out that I didn't twist the gas cap tightly. I made it tight and now the code is gone
how long did it take for the code to disappear?
Austin Scarbel yeah
How long dissappear?
@@robotsanddogs666I replaced my gas cap and my light went away in 10 minutes, I have a 2015 Altima sv
❤❤❤❤
Would the check engine light go off if I replace the fuel cap?
I bought a locking gas cap,PO456 CAME UP AGAIN.ANYWAY,THE PROBLEM WAS THAT NEW GAS CAP HAD NO ORING WITH IT?SO I TRANSFERED THE OLD GAS CAP O RING AND PROBLEM SOLVED.THE GAS CAP I BOUGHT WITH NO O RING WAS A STANT.
I've added a new gas cap that didn't work I put a new purge valve in that didn't work I will now put a new ECM in if that doesn't work I guess the next option will be a smoke test
Update
Still have a P0456 code
What if you don't have a had cap?

Buy one.

New gas cap on RS5. Still getting the error and techs can’t find the leak
Yikes
Your "techs" don't know what the hell they're doing.
@@xerxes7989 🤣😂🤣 exactly
P0456 could be a lot of things go get a smoke test end of video
get the microphone closer to the source (mouth) so there is a clearer vocal sound with less room tone please
OMG YOU ARE SO CUTE THO!!
The video is useless it is not solved you need to change your headline.
After installing the purge valve and the gas cap I decided to get a smoke test which I should have done to begin with.... In my case it ended up being the fuel filler neck
Thank you for the feedback, D C!
This video is a LIE, which is NOT FUNNY. The title of the video is P0456 (Fixed) EVAP Small Leak (Gas Cap). The title says they fixed P0456, but they did not FIX anything. The girl LIED.
FIXED is the name of the company
let me tell you that she know nothing about car.....
What a waste of my time!!!
Invest in a mic.
Informative and clear. Invest in books learning how to speak.
I don't trust car repair advice from chicks 👤
female mechanics exist right? you get that right. both men and women are capable of giving shit advice and vice versa
Lmao like gender has anything to do with knowledge in today’s world a good mechanic is knowledgeable, goes to technical school ect...
It's your problem lol. Nothing wrong with women and men can do anything to fix their cars.
u should me more concerned if LGBT will give advice lmao
You’re very likely to get ripped off by a male mechanic and go back to them for the same unresolved issue but ok lol
