You know, normal cars(with a manual transmission) do have some straight gears: the reverse gear. Ever heard that weird noise when you're reversing? Thats the straight cut gears.
There is no actual reverse gear, except in manual transmissions. The reverse gear is just the planet gears of the planetary gearset of an automatic transmission, which use helical cut gears. Search up how a planetary gearset works on youtube before you start spurring out bullshit.
It's long gone sadly. Bart left Donut like 4 years ago :( They never made any public mention of it that I remember so I suspect it wasn't on the best of terms but I'm not sure
Bart failed to mention just how badass straight cut gears sound at speed. As a mechanical engineering student I love watching your videos, they are educational as well as entertaining, I think you found the right balance of being educational without getting too bogged down and bored by the theory and math behind the concepts
One of my teacher once told us that in the old days all gearbox were straight cut, even truck's one, he said the sound of it was louder than the engine once you past 50 mph
I was. But I've been trying to figure out what that gearbox whine was anyway. I always thought it was the drivetrain, when you get to higher speeds. I also hear it in some rally cars.
@@willmiskovich359 Its got to be cheaper to manufacture a straight cut gear than a helical. It makes reverse noisy, but how long are you in reverse to even recognize it?

Well there’s only two types of people in the world, left handed and right handed! Kinda makes you wonder what all the fuss was about in the first place 🤔
funny bit, at some catholic schooles etc a while back, being left handed was considered sinful (hole devil left side nonsence?). SO even with lvr handedness we figured out how to hate eachother for that lol.
That whining noise of 1950's cars is probably a good example of straight cut. (BTTF exaggerates it for that iconic "Delorean sound".) And modern electric cars with a single ratio probably get the advantages of helical without the axial thrust by mirroring it into a herringbone. (At least it'd make sense to use it in that application.)

Definitely learned something here! Sounds like overall Straight cuts are the way to go! Why couldn't car manufacturers just add sound deadening around the outsides of those sweet straight cut gear boxes?? Sounds like maybe a better alternative! Maybe not but either way straight cuts make whining noises similar to a supercharger and who DOESN'T enjoy that??
Mann I don’t miss Burt on donut, he’s my least favorite guy on here. No disrespect he’s far better than i could ever be but I just like every one else better
Actually a common engineering solution to the thrust loads caused by helical gears is by running another set in the opposite direction. Essentially it just cancels out the thrust load. Also thrust loads are used to make sure that bears stay in the desired place.
You mean Herringbone-cut helical gears? Funnily enough, that’s where the logo for Citroën came from. Founder, André Citroën, got into the automotive industry by producing herringbone gears, which were even used in the steering gear of the RMS Titanic. Said herringbone gears were also used in the final drives of Citroën vehicles, up until the Traction Avant.
