In this video, we take an older Essential Phone PH1 that I picked up on eBay for
$67 and set it up with a USB type c to HDMI adapter and a Bluetooth controller to create an Android-powered emulation/Gaming home console!
the essential phone is powered by a snapdragon 835 and backed by 4GB of ram so it can handle most Android games plus it's still a great CPU for emulation.

"Old Android phone" and "USB type C" do not belong in the same sentence in my world.
Yes, I'm getting old miself.
Idk the last 3 phones I had were all type c
Yup lmao. My phone is a first gen Samsung Galaxy A5 and in my books that's where I draw the line for old phones.
LG phones had USB C like 5 or 6 years ago
So mySony X0eria M2 is too old I guess. That was 2014 and I thought it has still purpose.
My HTC U11 is also from 2017. And four years are like "ages" for many users.
this phone went for +$700 on launch
now it's called old and costs 67$ used, man that sad and fascinating at the same time
Thats what happens when phones are constantly released every year or 2 year tops

You're about to emulate the whole world.

Only if launchbox adds support for that emulator

This is so easy to setup that I'll consider it to a "Turn your phone into a emulation device" video.
Anyway this is a great idea. Carry all your games with you all around
Ruin you battery life in the process.
If you use your phone to pay for bills and as a credit card you increase the chances of getting hacked.
Any 10y old pc can be used similarly, if you run windows 10 and Ryzen, you can install the AMD Suit.
With it you can set your pc to realy low Wat consumptions, my Ryzen 3600x with RTX2060 consumes 50watts when emulating PS2 games.
@@lordrefrigeratorintercoole288 It's not for everyone. But the PH1 has official Lineage support and therefore will have security updates as long as the maintainers keep it up.
@@lordrefrigeratorintercoole288 If you pick one up used then you don't have to care about the battery and use it solely as a general Android and gaming device. It still uses less energy and has a far smaller footprint than an old PC.
There are smartphones where batteries are easily replaceable, you know...
Ive seen so many people waste money on all these new retro consoles but your old phone is most likely 10 times more powerful and better at emulation.
Also, if this phone has android 10 (any phone with 10), go to developer settings and look for GPU watch.
You can see frame rates, rendering resolution, and hardware usage stats
One of the things people need to be aware of with some phone types, is compatibility for the Docking/Adapter device. I ended up picking a wrong one some time back.
use "screen rotaion" , and in developer settings, "force resizable " and force freeform,
i use the rotation app for temple run and othe portrait mode,
This is awesome! I've done basically the same thing with my old Galaxy S8 so its great to see how you set it up in comparison. I definitely got some ideas to tweak my setup now.

@@senthilkannasuntharalingam4888 you can use keyboard and mouse for any app that supports them, I don't think fortnite mobile does but I've never played it
Got an s10e for $60 on ebay with a shattered back glass. Got a perfect opportunity to practice replacing back glass for the first time and now the phone had a clear back glass and is an emulation beast. Pretty much with my HDMI dongle I can play games reliably from GameCube and earlier on the TV no hitches and with 128 base storage and 256 SD card inside, can't be happier. Tbh use it more than my actual phone.
I got an old OnePlus 7 Pro with a screen burn I got for free because someone was throwing it away. The screen looks pretty shot and has ghosting bad but it works fine if you plug it into a monitor. I'm about to set it up to be a PS2 with an old Xbox controller that refuses to connect to an xbox. I got a little 1080p 10" security monitor I picked from the trash after a remodel. I'll have a free PS2 for the top of my dresser shortly. Can't beat that price.
What to do about battery? It will expand/puff with use.
@@johnchristian7788 every battery experiences loss of charge over time. Usually the primary culprit of expanded batteries is heat. Plus it's easy to swap a battery on these phones since they're much easier to get into

The Essential Phone is still my favorite phone I ever owned, amazing design and feel in the hand.
Dude, hard SAME. When it came time to upgrade, it was the first time in twenty years I didn't really want to, there was nothing on the market that came close to the quality and elegance of my PH-1. The specs were strong, the build quality and materials exquisite, and holy shit, it got Android updates BEFORE ANDROID'S OWN PHONE DID. And it STILL works really well years later, unlike my other cell phones that were running like absolute crap shortly after I upgraded away. I really loved the complete lack of branding on the body and the phone info hidden on a tag in the SIM slot, too. I could kick Andy Rubin's ass for acting the fool and dooming the company, I was really looking forward to the next iteration.
Waiting on a screen 4 mine. That phone is a legit tank!
Great Video! I just ordered the Oneplus 9pro so I will be turning my LG V40 into another emulator. It has the snapdragon 845 so should be fine for most. Thanks again!

KOF Allstar - I’ve been playing this for 4 months solid! It’s so awesome!!!
It is a good option for people who owns one or a similar phone only you have to invest for at least the cables adapters. The usb stand looks awesome, but a bit pricey. Great video thanks.
I turned my LG Stylo 4 into a Nintendo DS emulator. It's perfect for it, has a styllus. The specs aren't too impressive. It has a snapdragon 450 chipset and only 32 gb worth of space, the operating system takes up a small chunk. But honestly most older retro games don't take up much space at all. I was able to put all the top DS games 🎮 on that device, the emulator I used is Drastic which in my opinion is the absolute best DS 👌 emulator. It runs smoothly with just the snapdragon 450 chipset. I also added my favorite Sega Genesis , Mame, Snes and Nes emulators. Not the entire collection like I have on my other devices but my top favorite games for each emulator. It honestly didn't take much to run these older retro games so the LG Stylo 4 can handle them easily. You can even add filters and run them at 60 fps. The resolution is 1080 x 2160 pixels so everything looks awesome. I also use a arcade front-end called Arc Browser, I have the details, box art , video game trailer of every emulator displayed like a old school arcade setup . I just touch the icon of what ever game I want to play. It's amazing how you can pimp out your old phones 📱. My main phone S21 plus can run every fucking thing 👀👌 I have entire libraries of different retro consoles on 256 gb memory with 888 snapdragon chipset. It runs dreamcast via redream emulator smoothly and upscale to max settings, dolphin emulator and even a freaking ps2 emulator ( you'd be surprised ) the only reason why I'm using my LG Stylo 4 is because the stylus is perfect for DS games.

Wow found the best way to stream my games to my downstairs tv cool!
excellent concept and video too.... : )
Ahh... that Ratchet and Clank takes me back... can't even count how many times I replayed the shit out of it. Anyone remember the OP gun Ryno?
It's amazing how hard it actually is to find a phone that supports hdmi. Tried to see what can be found locally for cheap and man, whatever I find for a decent price is devoid of TV out other than streaming.
But what is the minimum spec fone to turn into a retro handheld? I don't know how well those little add on controllers work so your fone is kind of like a switch? Would be good when you get an upgrade some of those retro handhelds are expensive and probably not as powerful as a 3 year old fone.
@@jimmynich4791 really depends what you want to emulate. I recently upgraded from a Kirin 710f powered phone, it was hopeless when it came to GC (Wind Waker was playable with some serious tweaking), but could run some PS2 (dmc, kh, ffx, anything more demanding is too much for it). However, when it comes to PSP or Dreamcast, it could upscale. If you want older, less demanding consoles though, I could emulate plenty even on the HTC Sensation back in the day. Emulators are more demanding today (progress leads to more powerful hardware providing more accurate emulation), but you can easily emulate PS1, even some N64, even on an old quad core. You do want a Snapdragon if you can get it though, e.g. a Snapdragon 636 is weaker than a Kirin 710f, yet it will emulate better quite often.
@@youzernejm I dont think I want to go upto game cube I have gc emulation on my mini pc downstairs. Maybe n64, ps1, snes, dc, psp, gba, etc. I'm due an upgrade from my s9 soon but the screen is cracked so thought I'd use my old s7 if I can find it. My girlfriend has an old Google pixel lying around somewhere just needs a new battery but they're cheap. Any fone controllers that are good?
@@jimmynich4791 N64 is actually relatively difficult to emulate considering the power of the device, at least on arm. That said, more powerful dedicated emulation devices than either Pixel or S7 are just coming out. You still have plenty of power in those devices. Install Muoen64 plus fz and you will be able to upscale and install high res textures if you wish.
I would also expect you will be able to do both DC and PSP, maybe God of War will hit the wall at 2x upscale, for
example, but these are still capable devices.
As for the controller, you can get a clip and combine it with an xbox one s controller for example. It can also be done with PlayStation controllers, albeit with a bit more complication. There are also some new Xbox compatible controllers with a clip built in, I think by Razor, can't rember as I really don't like those. Or an 8bitdo with a clip. Still, can't stand them personally.
As for the telescopic ones, Razer Kishi is good usb-c model, or Gamesir X3 (usb-c or Bluetooth depending on the phone), then there is Saitake 7007x or similar, those are nice. Ipega has some cheaper models, if you're strapped for cash.

Excellent video! I think many viewers should have some older smartphone at home ... and this is a very good use for that instead of buying a FireTV Stick or something similar!
But I do have some questions, +ETA PRIME :
How can I detect, if my smartphone supports HDMI over USB-C, especially since that feature is often not mentioned in the spec sheets. I do have an 2017 HTC U11 with 4Gigs of RAM and also this SD835, but I'm not sure. Also with LG phones like the G6 or G7 ... Should there be a hint in some settings that do come with that feature embedded?
And: Is there a way to use this combo with the smartphone screen off, so that it does not shimmer all the time? My U11 has a broken screen and a battery that does not hold that good anymore, but I really would like to use this like you showed in the video.
Maybe an App can turn off the screen without turning off the device? Have you heard of anything like it?
And I'm currently looking for a small remote for such a setup/ SBC/ Tiny PC or even an XBox Series S. I have one for my older XBox One S that cost 10 bucks. But the One S has an IR port. How can I have the same comfort on such a setup?
This is like a Raspi with androidTV and a fluent UA-cam playback. And for that: thumb up!
And with something like Game Pass Ultimate on the android device and a fast internet connection ... it could be worth a try to play games without even having a console. The smartphone should be way more efficient than any mini PC or console even can be.
Funnily; I've read that the LG V30, G7, V35, and possibly the V40 didn't ship with HDMI over USB-C activated. They had the hardware installed, just not the software to run it, which allowed LG to add it later in an OTA update, so any of them you'd find on Swappa or eBay will have it. However, none of the reviews or marketing materials from when they were new will call it out.
just occurred to me, but how many bluetooth controllers could one actually connect to an android phone? or even connect via USB through a USB-C dock? might be great for some multiplayer mario kart or power stone.
