I was expecting a dismasting. I remember an America's Cup interview from the builder talking about weight vs. strength. He said if everything was perfectly matched, in theory, the boat would disintegrate and sink at the finish line.
Yeah, it might have had a bit to do with the boat under them being on the edge of a broach. They had to sail too high to keep some distance. There is no where safe to go it the guy under you loses it, you are toast. Not so easy to manage in the heat of the moment.
Lots of keyboard racers saying the main was too tight…maybe so but I’m sure it wasn’t the mainsail trimmer’s first day out on a racing boat. Boat was on the limit but under control (just!) until he had to luff. Cool how the guy who decided not to hoist the kite was overtaking broached boats (and apparently going just as fast before they broached)
In my opinion, it was not an intentional maneuver. Their main sail is too tight. A squall came, ripped the rudder out of the water and the yacht faced the wind. Look at the third boat, in the front... had the same problems
Racing is by definition about pushing the boat at the limit. And sometimes, you lose control, and then it's all about how good / trained you are at recovery. But yeah, whoever was in charge of tactics on the boat either wasn't paying attention, or decided to chance it and pass everyone else, while being the only boat that could take the gust without issue. In which case, he did not know his crew well enough to know they could not handle it.
@@zedthehun Could have gone downwind, or right away ease the sails and drop the spinnaker. But the entire crew has to be very responsive and know what to do in seconds.
A bit too greedy. Seeing the other boats I just thought to myself. Take the kite down now 20 seconds before it happened and get a nice clean manouvre in to gybe round the mark and let everybody else go too far. I would have liked to see how the boat with the black spinnaker dealt with this. Speed isn't everything.
Brilliant racing on the edge nothing more happens the best of sailors great conditions

They were just doing what it takes to win, no major harm done as far as I can tell
Things like this happen while sailing / regatta but they take time to ease the Spi and reajust the course. Great sailing though
Was nobody watching boats in front?? The wind gust was easy to predict. Crew was not prepared
sails in the way
@@epicgamer785 disagree. the foot of the chute is high enough that someone could have been looking forward under it
Boats in the rear get that gust before boats in the lead, wind is in quarter beam
@@MrKevingreggclearly you haven't raced on a sports racer at these speeds, everyone is hiking, not on bow watching other boats

Classic outcome when trying to sail high under kite.
A puff and a shift, and no gear shift. No wonder they rounded up.

Agreed. The main was way over strapped!

Mate, the boat under him was on the edge of losing it. He had to stay too high to keep some clearance, there was no where safe to go.

I don't understand what happened....not a sailor !
Could have been a lot worse-head up /luff up…

Speed isn't everything.
and then cut it of before we now how it ends. Lousy filming
Poor racing....The boats in the back seen the wild gust up ahead an did nothing about it ,they where too busy sight seeing.
They are sailing downwind so the gusts comes from behind. The boats up broaching are different boats with symmetrical kites
Ну видно ж было за минуту ,что шквал был впереди,почему не убрали генакеры?😊
