- Hey I'm Justin Mitchell. I'm a professional photographer specializing in on-water foiling action. I'm available for work worldwide. I speak English and Spanish.
Here's my portfolio: justinmitchell.co.nz/
Filming the AC boats is just a hobby I picked up during the last cup.
-
Location: Auckland, NZ
Wind at time of filming: Passage Rock 15-25kts SW / Browns Island 18-28kts (away from camera POV)
_
The boat was in the "back paddock" somewhere between Passage Rock and Browns Island, so the wind must have been somewhere around or between the readings above... pretty windy either way... and it was gusting even higher... and then there's the chop... I imagine the team were happy to test the boat out in these conditions.
The video quality's not great on this one but I needed to zoom right in there to see what was happening.

She looks powerful. I would be afraid to stand in her way. (OK, float) A magnificent boat, the one to beat!
Thanks for documenting these ETNZ sessions, the more the better! And I appreciate no commentary and/or music also.
Cool, good to know... cheers 👍
Whowee that girl is "SMOKIN"
Thank you for the footage. Great to see Taihoro deal with the conditions as well as they did, and none of us would be as well informed without you effort. Appreciated.
Thanks Desmond, I'm also glad we can watch a bit of the new here before it heads away to Spain...cheers 👍
Kiwi's will be very HARD to beat! Beautiful handling of the chop and smooth maneuvers. Great video, thanks!
Thanks!
So much valuable new moves , the other 5 teams are going to play back this on a 80 inch screen
Good work Justin. impressive how they can de-power the main so quickly. And create twist. cheers Phile
Hey mate... cheers...I don't usually see so it so eased off like that... I always think of those mains as being so tight... another perspecitve...and extreme conditions
Looking real good beautiful. Great boat handling great shore team . Go boys.
Looks fascinating in these conditions, great footage as always. But looks kind of scary, too! A split second of the sail- and foil-trim not being coordinated perfectly and WHOOOOOW things could go flying in a total different direction than they want to 😳😅!
Yeah I'm glad I managed to get something while they were there in those conditions... you can how in a lot of the bear aways they kept it on double foils before lifting one...still pretty amazing given its only been on the water few times... we've come a long way since the early days ac36
The twist in that sail looks incredible
insane how it eases off and its just looks so big and flappy...trying to trim it all on the go must be tricky
Today's sea state is similar to that of Barcelona's
Gee thats fast! If they travel one boat length every second thats around 80-85km/h. They looked at times to be faster than that 😮 Hate to know how much faster the new foils will be.
They may be using the new foils already
yeah I wonder how fast they were going... they're still on the old foils and foil arms here
As always it’s great to read your detailed description, that accompanies your video.
Thanks! 🙌
No lacking in apparent wind. Thanks for the videos
cool Mike, cheers, incredible with the bear aways how much the main gets eased
Carving through the chop in the Motuihe Channel is a test and a half. It reminds me of barrelling north through that in Superflyte one dark and stormy night, which had some passengers thinkingseriously about the paper bags. But Taihoro doesn't get seasick. It just rises up and revels in it.
Great footage - thanks Justin!
Thanks Geoff!! 👍
Great footage. First time I have seen her in fresh winds.
I'm pretty sure this is the "freshest" she's been in so far
Thanks for great pictures...
Sail twist and looking good in turbulent sea.
amazing how much it twists in the bear away right...how much they have to ease it off
Awesome sending it already
Just wow
No worries Justin, you are a Guru..Thanks👍
Thanks mate!
Looks more chop than waves to me..... thanks for the footage
yep...especially further out...the big test will be in the Barcelona swell...
That looks terrifying!
Amazing footage Justin, they looked very cautious to me, that would be a bit scary in those conditions.
yep, they were definitely being a bit cautious with those first bear aways... double foil down etc... hardcore conditions
Still dialling this baby in but Kiwis are good at what they do and always on the money. Gonna be an awesome comp
totally... imagine this with a match race...can't wait!
ICEBERG! 4 O'clock 4:13
Hehe
I know it's too early to say, but this time too TNZ is the boat to beat...
Low flying….awesome the height that these guys are constantly operating at…one or two inches it appears !
Boat to beat AC37. Tough task.
Nothing to see here, it's only rock & roll & we like it
I have email'd this link to Mozzy Sails. Those Pommy gits would love to see this!
How kind of you
No need for ad hominem the Mozzy sails team are excellent and the English are way stronger across the board
Than NZ in the olympics
My adrenalin is pinging just sitying in an armchair!
Ciao Justin,video bellissimo,N.Z.molto veloce
grazie Giuseppe!
Se non sbaglio New Zealand riesce a volare con 7 nodi di vento reale?
They might need a faster chase boat
Roughly what was the windspeed Justin? Looks pretty fresh out there. Guessing by the white caps somewhere around 15-20 knots breeze?
Hey mate, anywhere between 15-28kts were recorded at the two closest measured spots... and these guys were in between those two spots... the recon report may have more specific figures... gusts were at least 30 so it was pretty heavy at times...
@@JustinMitchellTV Sounds like challenging conditions especially if gusting that high. Thanks! 👍
Any idea on when they ship her to Barcelona?
I've heard in around a fortnight they'll ship her off
Thanks. I just heard the 10 of May
Is Glen Ashby still closely involved with ETNZ?
Not sure... last I heard he was mentoring/assisting the French team
....unfortunately... that's a big loss to NZ!
Not sure eh, he's probably exhausted his ability to remain innovative by now.
@@Badmansband why would you say that???
@@jonathanseal5155 he's been 20 years with ETNZ. Smartest guy on the planet Tom Schnack was let go after the 2003 disaster. It may have been time to move on. And it's not like France are serious threats.
So early in the game and already catch-up for the other teams.
Even the way they put the boat in the water with a crane is so far ahead of all the others.
There's a long way to go. it will be a super tight comp
stll old foils right?
I don't think you will see new ones until Barcelona
I recon Taihoro will stay on old foils until new foils throughly tested on Te Rehutai when Taihoro is in Barcelona.
Yeah you'd think they will hold off as long as they can before revealing the foils... and the boats only going to be here for a another week or so before being shipped off to barcelona
In the segments where we see her sailing head on towards us, it's very apparent how twitchy she is with regard to wind changes/gusts. To be fair it does look to be a gusty day and the crew and equipment seem to stay on top of it!
It reminds me of how stupidly sensitive 2024 F1 cars are to wind direction and strength.
they're always making fine adjustments anyway... but you're right, its more noticeable when we get these front on shots... and especially in these sort of conditions!...hi precision sailing!...
That main sail looks a bit loose floping around a bit 😮
Gingerly going thru those initial bear aways for sure
I am still thinking she will be a wet boat in bigger seas.
Is it me or does she look fast n stable
Chur, now show us what you got Alinghi and Luna Rossa 😅
As usual it could potentially end up being very fast but I can see a lot of clumsiness so far is it's normal when getting to know a new boat. Especially with those wind conditions I expect teams to be way more agile than this.
It's called testing. Loads, systems, angles... It's not clumsiness mate. The best sailors on the planet right now are on this boat. I see clumsiness from the other teams, 100% yes!
@@THIS_IS_SPARTA666 they are good we all know it, but I can't stand comments on how far behind the other teams allegedely are based on what we can see from this video where they clearly are still not handling the boat perfectly yet. I'm not saying they are clumsy, I am saying that the boat still looks clumsy and THAT'S NORMAL since it's a brand new boat and months of practice are needed
Just the NZ fanboyz.. 😂
Interesting, but would have been better with some sound/commentary
Yep 👍
@@JustinMitchellTV I really enjoyed watching with no commentary - just hearing the elements
Thanks for sharing but your video would be much better if it was half the length with the long distance footage removed.
Noted!
I think that they had full pants in some moments....😂 Fascinanting to see her going +60kn
Crazy, they got some!.
That wind looks like 40
Knots and they just
Launched it.that takes
Conference .i know who
My money is on.
