The Chernobyl Rest and Recuperation Programme started in Northern Ireland in 94 as a response to an ask from areas surrounding Chernobyl to help the children living those areas.
The Ukrainian kids are not refugees, there are part of a program that gives children from the areas affected by radiations a « radiation break » over the summer, meaning spending time in a radiation-free place for a few months to lessen the effects. There was programs like that all over Europe (and even abroad I think) set up after the disaster and especially in the 90s after the fall of USSR since traveling from those regions became easier. (The show is definitely set in the 90s.)
Adi Roche has done so much to help. I have a standing order for them and sometimes you get sad updates where someone has died but I like that she is continuing her work all these years later.
@@AudsVids also, it should be noted that Ireland has a long history of a variety of charitable activities and is rated today as one of the nations that is highest in charitable contributions. The part in the Derry Girls script, episode 1, about Clare doing a fast for Ethiopia is a realistic addition.
true. if you just watch her in the background everytime she's on screen she's always doing something entertaining or interesting. the actress really commits to the role. i wish there were more interviews with her. most interviews featured the actress for Erin (because she's from Derry and is the main character) and Michelle. and i've seen a bit of sister michael as well.
Louisa Harland (Orla) stars in the recently released Disney plus series Renegade Nell, created/written by Sally Wainright, one of the leading UK TV writers.
@@catherine140864 just watched episode 1 of that show. hard to believe it's disney with the amount of violence in the show. the pacing was a bit odd with a few predictable plot points but the acting from everyone and the fight choreography was superb.
8:32 it’s good Erin got shut down here. Sex work is work and all that but she really insulted her guest. She was under no obligation to just laugh it off.
13:50 hold up. You guys are comparing cosplaying to wearing political slogans that actively advertise wanting certain groups to not exist? It’s weird to those of us who have to actually be afraid for our safety when we see those things. Not the same at all. I’d think about that some more.
Joe's last "piss off, Gerry" has the softest tone Joe has used with Gerry. It's weirdly sweet.
It really was. Joe's hatred of Jerry seems oddly performative; I don't think Joe dislikes Jerry at all.

Thank you! That was confusing to us; I wasn't sure if they were refugees from the area at the time of the tragedy.
Season 3 is the best.

Thanks! We were unaware of that program, so that was throwing us off.
Erin can be very sanctimonious at times and it was good for her to be humbled here.
Definitely. We have finished S1, and Erin definitely has some bad moments of selfishness and self-righteousness.
Erin can be a little intense sometimes, but she's my favourite character. xd
This show is set in the mid-late 1990’s, not in the 80’s. The “Chernobyl Children's Project International” was founded in Ireland in 1991.
Thanks! Yeah, we were pretty sure it was 90's, so the Chernobyl aspect was throwing us off.

@@Dej24601 Yeah I definitely did one for Trócaire when I was in secondary school.
Orla is my favorite; she's living in her own world, lol.
She is SO watchable, even when she isn't speaking.

Please react to Chernobyl!
Um, about the Chernobyl show...it's amazing and short, only 5 episodes. But it is one of the hardest watches I've ever endured.
