I ran a gym for about 10 years. There’s a surprising amount of theft at gyms. Unlocked lockers get their bags/wallets taken all the time. Had to deal with it monthly. The solution is cameras at the entrance of the locker room so you see what they walk in and out with. That’s all police need

This is so common it’s disgusting. I was in gymnastics as a little girl and the owner of the gym got arrested for having a camera in the women’s restroom. I was 8 when this happened, I’m 27 now. There was no footage of me in particular, however. I never liked using the bathroom there and I learned why! My mom always made us change at home, thankful for that!

As far as it being weird for a man to run a women's gym, I do have a tidbit. There was a women's gym near my old house, and it was owned and operated by a dude. He was a trans guy, and had started the gym before he transitioned. He got a lot of backlash when he came out because people said he was a predator. I knew him and his family really well (I went to school with his kids), and he was one of the sweetest people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. Obviously this isn't the same situation, and the guy in the video is a scumbag, but I figured I'd throw this wholesome bit out there.

I actually saw the video of the girl finding the camera in the bathroom a week or two ago. It was wrapped in a towel sitting on top of one of those yellow rolling mop buckets. It may have been pointing at the sink area but it was sitting directly across from the toilet and maybe 3 or 4 feet away. I think the video of her finding it went pretty viral, because i've seen it come up more than once.
I worked in a gym for a while. One year during Christmas we had an elf on a shelf that we’d move everyday. Members who reported where they saw it were entered to win prizes like a protein drink or a free month of membership. We had a guy go in the women’s locker room during the middle of the day “to find the elf.” He was not allowed back after that.

Not sure if you saw this but, there is a video from one of the females who found the camera, it is located directly looking at the toilet… it’s not in a locker room. It is in an actual bathroom. What a sick person.
Step 1, don't put anything in the bathroom that you're worried about getting stolen. Step 2, install the camera _outside_ the bathroom. It's pretty hard to get away with stealing if you're caught taking the item into the bathroom with a bag, and then coming back out with just the bag.
You messed up at step 1 already. How was he supposed to have had an excuse that way? He probably thought of all this stuff one day and thought it would be some kind of bulletproof defense. Even if he was dumb enough to risk this... Why not at least put it inside the ''private'' cabinet? It wouldn't have caught anything other than the crime, and they wouldn't be able to see it before opening it up. Idk if he was present a lot, but there's also the option of checking the cabinet occasionally, and looking at the camera feed outside to check who has used it since stuff has gone missing. As a woman, I agree with Charlie. A man operating a womens-only gym is a bit sketchy. I wouldn't go so far to say it's a red flag, but I don't know. I can only speak for myself but I don't understand why a man with pure intentions would open a female only gym when he could make more money as a unisex facility and have women's only areas and/or fitness classes like my gym does.
hi, I am a homeless woman and sometimes those female only 24 hour gyms sound like a dream. However. If I knew this facility was ran by a single man, I would not go there even in our northeastern winter. Red flag for me. If he was married it'd be different in my own opinion.
Funnily enough, the gym I go to has had customers' property being stolen from the locker room (lockers broken open with a crowbar and hammers) and all they did was put up signs saying we left items at our own risk due to the thefts and signs on the broken locker doors until they were fixed (which didn't stop them being broken into again) so most people started using the lockers that are in the main area of the gym where there are cameras and people around.
Can you imagine you've been there for 4 days and you catch the manager trying to record you. Thats one hell of a reason to never want to go back to the gym.

My former gym owner was kicked out by the landlord because he peeked through the keyhole into the women's changing room. The building had been renovated to create changing rooms, this had meant that a hallway had been blocked. A small part of the hallway had been converted into a storage room, but they had not removed the other door that now led into the ladies' changing room. The gym guy had unblocked the keyhole and spent an uncomfortably long time in the storage room. So even if he wasn't caught red-handed, the landlord didn't want him. 🤢🤮
i worked at a gym years ago and we had employees steal money. that was the most common one, food, supplements, a member stole some small plates once, but there is nothing in the bathroom. same thing when i worked at gamestop. what are you going to steal in the bathroom though toilet paper

I actually saw the video of the girl finding the camera in the bathroom a week or two ago. It was wrapped in a towel sitting on top of one of those yellow rolling mop buckets. It may have been pointing at the sink area but it was sitting directly across from the toilet and maybe 3 or 4 feet away. I think the video of her finding it went pretty viral, because i've seen it come up more than once.
I worked in a gym for a while. One year during Christmas we had an elf on a shelf that we’d move everyday. Members who reported where they saw it were entered to win prizes like a protein drink or a free month of membership. We had a guy go in the women’s locker room during the middle of the day “to find the elf.” He was not allowed back after that.

Idk if he was present a lot, but there's also the option of checking the cabinet occasionally, and looking at the camera feed outside to check who has used it since stuff has gone missing.

Funnily enough, the gym I go to has had customers' property being stolen from the locker room (lockers broken open with a crowbar and hammers) and all they did was put up signs saying we left items at our own risk due to the thefts and signs on the broken locker doors until they were fixed (which didn't stop them being broken into again) so most people started using the lockers that are in the main area of the gym where there are cameras and people around.
Watching it on live feed makes it that much creepier to me

My former gym owner was kicked out by the landlord because he peeked through the keyhole into the women's changing room. The building had been renovated to create changing rooms, this had meant that a hallway had been blocked. A small part of the hallway had been converted into a storage room, but they had not removed the other door that now led into the ladies' changing room. The gym guy had unblocked the keyhole and spent an uncomfortably long time in the storage room. So even if he wasn't caught red-handed, the landlord didn't want him. 🤢🤮

I live in the town that this happened. It has caused some waves in the community as this happened in a small city. The gym has absolutely been shut down. Friends of mine who are very active purchased some of their equipment as a result. We all know the perception here, any so-called evidence at this point doesn't matter.

I believe you are totally correct about the camera position because he wanted to. Gyms are members only, and even public gyms fall under members only. The stealing excuse was just an excuse to do wrong. He could have just taken her membership away if it was so bad.

There was also a Lt Col. in the Army who put a camera in the dressing room at the mall in nearby Pismo Beach. He was also head of ROTC at Cal Poly SLO. It was mostly swept under the rug and charges were dropped.
