    En route to Dover, a lorry driver complains about the mounting political chaos, while in Portsmouth a Brexit debate in a Wetherspoons pub gets rowdy. From warehouse employees to tech workers, everyone has their own take on Brexit. But one big question cries out for an answer: which way will get us out of this mess?

It's difficult to understand how when people are so disengaged with normal politics, local and national that suddenly they are chapter and verse experts. Brexit is about feelings, people felt fed up with being ignored, newspapers made them think that the EU was telling them what to do and Farage and others made people feel that it was valid. Spinler Muckflitt Ill throw in some verifiable economic and trade facts in your mix:
      UK imports 53% from Europe. The remaining 47% comes from other Nations UNDER EU trade deals. In case of a hard Brexit, UK will have to negotiate new deals under WTO with dozens of countries individually. But: When UK tries to make deals that will undermine EU trade, EU as a block will put pressure on the Nation or country that tries to do so by threatening a boycott on their products.
      So who will that nation choose? UK with 67million inhabitants, or a market of 550million inhabitants?
      Think big or go home. EU = Big. You = home.

After 4 years of work and very good promising results, my British supervisor robbed me from all this and effectively destroyed my scientific career by telling 3 weeks before the end of my contract that there will be no other contract available and that I can still work in his lab but ... without being paid... ??? Yet, for the for the entire time of my stay he was always repeating that I should not worry because it is his priority for my project to go on... You can imagine that in a highly specialised scientific field finding a new job in 3 weeks is impossible. This had also a devastating impact on my family which has fallen apart but the university did of course say that all is fine ... Decent and responsible people do not do things like this. They do not deceive others in their trust and willingness to cooperate but my story and the current Brexit issues show it clearly what the true nature of British people is and always was throughout history... Andrew Foster Andrew....I voted in 75 to leave, and I still remember why. Firstly I saw the EEC as a "club" and felt that no other country would do the UK any favours. I was wrong in that after a lifetime of hard work, and a career change accelerated by the Thatcher years of Tory dogma, "lame duck" industry, "on yer bike" advice from Tebbit, the U.K. has really benefited from much simplified trade within the EU, common standards, and improved workers rights. We have the European Court of Justice which is available as a last resort because in the UK we have the best Justice THAT MONEY CAN BUY, and very little if you're broke. Well I see this Brexit nonsense as hogwash , to benefit the extreme right of the Tory Party , at the expense of everyone else. We are allies with our EU partners, not ruled by them, but the likes of Redwood, Rees Mogg etc... don't like that ....they want to impose their ideas on the UK by hook or by crook. We've gone from nearly bankrupt to the 5th richest country in the world. However UK manufacturing has fallen from about 23% of our economy, to about 12%.....so how on earth going onto WTO trade deals with 95 countries on 29th March will benefit us is ludicrous....through the EU we already have free trade agreements fully or partly in force with 68 countries, and of course free trade with our EU partners. No wonder the rest of the world are looking on in shock and amusement, because they are outside our bubble and see the stupidity.
      I also voted to leave the EEC in 75 because we had abandoned Australia and New Zealand which I felt was wrong. Having no choice, today they trademore with Japan for example, and I doubt very much there will be much substance in the deals Liam Fox claims to have agreed.
      You have taken this Brexit nonsense on board, hook line and sinker, threatening my and my families future....and your future too, you just can't see if yet....but you will.

People worldwide should have equal opportunities to come here not just Europeans.

But of course, if you think thar you have to many europeans and much less of other nationalities I understand Brexit can help. In fact is very likely that a lot of the worst policies the EU has against the working classes are very likely proposed by the UK collaboration in the European construction. Nowhere in Europe the working class is as despised by its gobernments as I think it is in the UK. The UK joined the European Communities (EC) in 1973 under the Conservative government of Edward Heath, with continued membership endorsed by a referendum in 1975. In the 1970s and 1980s, withdrawal from the European Communities was advocated mainly by the political left, with the Labour Party's 1983 election manifesto advocating complete withdrawal.[2] In the late 1980s, opposition to the development of the EC into an increasingly political union grew on the right, with Margaret Thatcher - despite being a key proponent of the European single market - becoming increasingly ambivalent towards Europe.[2] From the 1990s, opposition to further European integration came mainly from the right, and divisions within the Conservative Party led to rebellion over the Maastricht Treaty in 1992. ;-/

    I'm British and have been living in The Netherlands for eighteen years. BREXIT IS A SHAME REALLY. Not so much for myself as I will shortly have the best of both worlds! I feel sorrow for England. Divided on so many fronts, yet now hoping to go it alone. Unfortunately a United Kingdom is merely a distant memory. Leaving the EU will not regain the Great Britain of old, maybe theoretically but unfortunately not in practice. Trying to achieve unity after such diversification and dilution of self, is not even worth contemplating. The energy, resolve and positivity necessary to attain such a result, unfortunately will not be found in the majority of the British population. Broken promises, forlorn and a complete lack of trust across the spectrum. Good luck with that one!

      @Grow Junkie Agree on so many points, especially unity after such diversity. 'Great' Britain though is and was only a geographical term, as opposed to 'Lesser Britain' (Brittany.) As to whether we will be 'great' again or ever were 'great' for much of the population past the elite is questionable. I love this country but even re-reading Bill Bryson's 'Notes on a Small Island', almost 30 years after its publication, much of what was good (more fairness, community etc) has already gone and much of the remainder seems fast disappearing.

    I voted remain (just) and am left wing, but I'd vote leave now because the more I've had time to reflect on the purpose of the EU and the way it functions, the more I'm recognising it as a neoliberal organisation that cares little for the rights of its citizens. That said, the tories care less but they are on our doorstep and easier to change.
    Given where our food comes from and the amount of Brits in the EU/EU citizens living here, I think its best to stay in the single market and have free movement of people.
    We just need to get tougher on big companies who want to exploit immigrants for cheap labour, which would benefit everyone. Also we need government policies to create full employment in jobs with a clear benefit to society, not cold calling, pyramid schemes, pestering people in the street and low paid warehouse work like this government keep boasting about.
    The tories have only prosecuted one person for paying below the minimum wage in this office- I have heard through the grapevine of more employers paying below the minimum wage to asylum seekers than they've convicted and honestly, I don't know what the best thing to do is given the governments negligent deportation policies.
    I sometimes think its better to leave this sinking ship. Surely the majority of right wingers want the same things as me- decent employment, healthcare, safety, good schools and well maintained cities with low poverty and homelessness. Oh and an end to the climate crisis. Why wouldn't you?

      The thing is some media outlets have it wrong brexit is not s left or right wing issue.
      What I find humourous is that while people claim your racist for not liking uncontrollable migration it's actually far more complex.
      By having more supply the demand goes down and so does wages so the natives get paid less and the migrants while earning a good wage compared to there own nation they are also then leaving there own country to fall behind in its own development.
      I don't want to steal the best migrants from other countries as I'd like them to help there own people first. All migration does is cause harm to the poorer less skilled workers and harm the country that the skilled worker came from

    • @sibience
      @sibience 5 років тому +22

      I think it will be hard to get employees because a lot of companies have built themselves on employing cheap migrant labour with zero hour contracts. They just request workers from agencies when they need them and then drop them when they don't. A lot of these companies couldn't function paying a decent wage with normal working contracts. You can blame the UK government for that situation. I think most of these kind of companies will shut down or relocate to within the EU after Brexit.

      Higher labour wages in a country which already has the strongest currency will make manufacturing goods non competitive on the open market as it just costs too much to make something you can make for a fraction of the cost in country with cheaper labour. Ultimately, it can play a role in causing a massive recession.

    • @glyntutt1586
      @glyntutt1586 5 років тому +1

      So the prevailing logic in the comments is that companies will move to the EU, either to places such as France or Germany (much higher costs of employment) or out in the outback where money goes further but there is a huge compromise on living standards........? I think not. Whatever happens, the FX rate may falter further, but the GBP will be more attractive compared to the politically underpinned Euro. Remember that services are WTO exempt, all tariffs are on manufactured goods.
      Think about it. The U.K. has the 5th or 6th largest economy, and only 15%of U.K. exports goes to the EU. The EU needs our purchases, if a spanner goes into the works there are hundreds of thousands of livelihoods in the EU on the line......

    On the basis that you don't know the background, this video is produced by a left wing newspaper run from London. A city that mostly voted remain. In the north of England many more Labour supporters voted leave, but the Guardian ignores them and puts out one-sided videos like this one.
    The Labour Party, and its leader in particular, refused to discuss a compromise and criticise everything the government do, instead of putting the country first and coming up with an agreement that will benefit us all.
    When criticism is all you can provide - like this newspaper, like this party - you have no recourse when things don't go your way. It's time to stop your playground chants and start helping the country.
