    Your videos are always very helpful to me. I have really found truth in the fact that deathcore vocals arent much louder than talking. I have come to terms with the fact that some people such as Alex Terrible have a naturally louder voice, also i know vocalists use compression and other effects. Live Its all down to how the mic is set up too.

      Alex Terrible has a crazy voice but I don't see him being able to do keep that up in his 40s. He strains far too much (yes, I've seen his videos). It's all about longevity in this game. Otherwise, you're just a flash in a pan.

    This is fantastic information, dude. I've been a metal vocalist for 17 years (wow that was weird to type out), and started out as an imitator (with no real technique or training) until watching the Melissa Cross "The Zen of Screaming" instructional DVDs a few years back. Those were a game changer for me, and you're exactly on par with everything that she says. Definitely following and will be watching from here on out.

    • @TerraExcessum

      It's basically the same as speaking. When you first get the falsies, it's hard to do anything, cos you're trying to talk around a bunch of plastic in your mouth. But with patient practice, you will get to the same level that you could achieve before you had the work done.
      Oh yeah, I forgot to say - I really do have a mouth full of plastic, with my 14 false teeth. Took me a while to get used to that!

    Warmups are extremlly overlooked, if i do my warmups in the morning i am literally set for the day, without the warm ups i would tire after 30mins to 1h of band practice but with the warmups that is no longer an issue plus i have way better throat and diaphragm control. And with smoking the sweet spot for me is 30 mins before and after a show or band practice. Also try avoiding sodas before gigs, for me they make my throat "sticky" and i cant get enough projection, if i try to add more power from the diaphragm i usually get a gag reflex if i drink some sort of soda, energy drink etc before a gig or band practice.

    I did not expect the mongolian throat singing.
    Btw, i’ve recently decided to learn how to sing (not necessarily metal).
    I’m fairly sure i overwork my voice, i have a lot of trouble holdingn myself back.
    I always warm up, and then do practice along videos.
    But usually the next day my voice is gonna be down 2-3 semitones, which to my knowledge is sign that my voice is tired. Not necessarily hurt.
    So in that situation, how long should i stop myself from talking/singing in that situation ?

    • @KardavoxAcademy
      @KardavoxAcademy  2 роки тому

      In general, it's recommended that for every hour of talking, you spend 10 minutes resting your voice - on my lesson days I regularly take breaks between lessons to rest my voice, and often spend at least a couple of hours a night in silence. Vocal rest is incredibly important! There may also be underlining issues in your technique - if you'd like to work with me on that, feel free to send me an email at kardavox1010@gmail.com to learn more about my student offerings!

    I know I'm a bit late on this but in the (admittedly very little and sporadic) research I've done which basically consists of reading comments all over the Internet I haven't really found a good answer to this: what's a good time frame for vocal rest? A few hours? A day? A week? A month even? I was going to ask my vocal coach this but a certain bat decided to intervene so instead I'm just gonna ask you, my one-sided online vocal coach (-ish). Do you think there is a set amount of time one should rest, does it depend or is there simply no good answer to the question? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts ^^

    • @KardavoxAcademy
      @KardavoxAcademy  4 роки тому +2

      The amount of vocal rest required can vary dramatically depending on the vocalist, and the level of pain they are in. In general, it's always best to take as much as possible and listen to your body. It's always better to be safe than sorry if you're feeling pain, however we'd have to spend more time with you and your voice to determine what would be appropriate for you specifically. - Alex

      Except for better breathing in general, screaming can also stimulate the Vagus nerve, facilitating a parasympathetic response. Both the vocal cords and the diaphragm stimulate the Vagus nerve. Worth looking into if you are getting dizzy. You can decrease the sensitivity of the Vagus nerve over time through exercises.

    That's funny what you says about alcohol.
    I've been practicing vocals a lot before I had to take a stupid night job and... well... As you say, every person is different, and this just is my own experiment :
    I've been in many 2 hours lessons with a without beer... (And I mean BEER, like a good old litre -- Yeah and sometimes home made hypocras...)
    From what I felt and what my teacher told me every single times : I breath and place my voice waaaaay better when I'm kinda drunk-ish.
    Maybe that's because of disinhibition : I maybe just stop thinking about technique and theory, and just go where I feel good and comfortable while singing, because that's how I like doing things ?
    Otherwise you're right, alcohol or not, drink water ! It's always good (Even between two beers !)
    Anyways...
    I wish I could take some lessons with you, because you clearly are one of the best instructor I've seen out there (Torque Bow's comment is damn right !), but yeah... I'm French and I'm broke ATM... :p

      But yeah... As I said, I'm kinda broke.
      To be honest, the teacher I had was crazy enough (And also I was one of the rare student he has doing screaming vocals and willing to deeply experiment with him) to offer me lessons for free in exchange of help during masterclasses, creating flyers... ect... That's how I could '"afford" vocal lessons.
      And I absolutely don't feel confident enough with my spoken English (Even if writting it is okay... you know, gamer thing...)
      Also I don't have a reliable isolated room at home for visio lessons.
      I'm gonna try to reach my local vocal coach again, hoping for the best.
      And I will keep watching your reaction videos as you share lots of tips and things that really helps to understand how singing works and has to be done.

      I know you want an answer from Mark... But my best advice is DON'T start smoking again! It's rough at first, but it gets easier, I promise! I smoked for 17 years, FINALLY quit about a year ago. No doubt my lungs are damaged (spoke to doctor about it after I was hospitalized for bronchitis, coughing up blood, he said "there's no way you didn't damage your lungs, but the imaging doesn't show cancer, so that's good...but what about a year from now?") I'm sure you know the risks involved with smoking, but we tend to mentally hide from those and do it anyway. It takes DISCIPLINE, but staying smoke-free is not only possible, but makes life so much better man! (For me anyway, I hope for you too!). Anyway, strength to you, and keep practicing! That's how things get better! P.S.- To this day when I do low gutterals, warmed up and everything, my throat still starts to feel like I'm gargling hot gravel... Try not to push it too hard, and focus on all the advice you get from Mark here! His content is legit!

      @@KardavoxAcademy Love your videos their so entertaining and informative. Also the song at the end sounds amazing, the harmony of those vocal tracks got me a little emotional.

      I'm no clinician but my general rule of thumb is that an hour before and after a set or recording, the only things going into your lungs should be air. Smoke is dry and hot regardless of the source, and that's something overall to avoid before a set.

    React to ENDON's "Your Ghost Is Dead"
    A Japanese experimental noisegrind band produced by Kurt Ballou of Converge. I don't really know what to say to convince you to react to them but THE VOCALIST...just...please. You WILL NOT be disappointed.
