  • I've spent almost NO time in ANY metal genre, or metal adjacent genre. I had heard the name Nightwish and that's as far as it ever went. Floor has power, control, and CLASS! The storytelling in this band is superb, and its safe to say that I LOVED my introduction to Nightwish!

Hello my friend Veronna!!!....Believe me this: You have to react to this Incredible Singer with the Most Insane Vocal Range of The World!!!..When I recommend Dimash to experts like you, sometimes they laugh and they look at me with that look that says "Have you gone crazy?...Nobody can sing like that"....And I smile and tell them "Do you want to bet your car?"!!!...Of course after they hear him their faces say it all!!...Lol!!...They can't believe what they are seeing and hearing....So well, I want to invite you to make a reaction to this incredible singer, who is leaving all the experts with their jaws literally on the floor...In 2017, a 22-year-old singer from Kazakhstan, named Dimash Kudaibergen, was invited to participate in the famous Chinese program for professional singers called "The Singer"... In his first appearance, Dimash covered one of the most difficult songs in the world, a famous French composition called "S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse"....Since then all this madness began on the internet, UA-cam and social networks worldwide and he is already considered the best singer on the entire planet... It is almost impossible to see a human being, being able to reach vocal ranges of 8 octaves, that is, the 88 keys of a digital piano, which allows him to reach all registers, both masculine and feminine, that is, he can sing as Bass, Baritone, Tenor, Contratenor, Contralto, Mezzosoprano and Soprano...You can see in UA-cam to all kinds of experts (Vocal coaches, analysts, singing teachers, singers, youtubers, reactors, etc.), who have dedicated themselves to watching his videos and verifying for themselves that what is said about him is completely true!!...In addition to all this, Dimash is capable of singing in more than 12 languages...In all his concerts worldwide, tickets are sold in just seconds, via the internet, due to the immense popularity he has worldwide....Anyway, I think you haven't met this impressive singer yet, so here is the link to the first song that Dimash performed in China in that year 2017, the song S.O.S., and if it doesn't bother you, I would like you to mention me as the person who recommended it to you!!...Warning: You have to be prepared for thousands of views, comments and new subscribers!!!...The video It is more recent, so it does not have the millions of views that the first ones, but it is more complete, including an intro, subtitles in several languages and better audio and sound quality...ua-cam.com/video/bDX3FhmyNac/v-deo.html

Hello VERONNA [ from Kardavox Academy ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This music video is the 1st single released in advance from their upcoming studio album Yesterwynde (2024), featuring Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, .and (at the end) Troy Donockley, multi-instrumentalist and singer.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

Floor Jansen has some crazy years behind. She lost her gallbladder. Did higly touring for 1, 5 years. And in between got breast cancer (cancer free after treatment) 3 weeks later back on stage.. And then got pregnant, doing some more touring. Child born and recording the hole album about 6 weeks after giving birth to her 2nd child at the age of 42.
    At still sounding like that❣️
Talking about Mixed voice you must listen to Floor live . No better example.
    Starting with
Ghost love score live at Wacken 2013
For your vocal analyse I would suggest to listen to her solo at Beste Zangers TV show 2019
    - Vilja Lied, Shallow and Phantom of the Opera
A flexible Larynx? Please listen to her previous band Revamp
    Live at Graspop 2010
    - Disdain
Her previous band After Forever live at Progpower US 2007
    - Dreamflight

Floors range = various estimates (A3-D3) to (E6 -F6) possibly plus whistle but I have never heard her use it.
    Floor tweeted this
If I hadn't had passionate music teachers in my high school, I might never have started singing. I was the bullied, insecure kid who dreamt of singing without knowing that I had a voice for it.
"Because of my dedication at school I dared to crawl out of my shell and started to sing! I became more confident of myself and made friends and was forever in love with music.
"Nothing is as wonderful and honest as making music together. Nothing connects as music can. Music education is therefore very important for many reasons.
    Floor's Wiki Bio
Floor Jansen started studying music at the Dutch Rock Academy in 1999, entering the Conservatorium Tilburg three years later. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. After After Forever split up she started teaching performing in her own course called Wanna be a Star?!
She used to play the guitar, piano and flute and has completed several years of music studies.
From the age of 16 all during this period she was fronting the the Band Apocalypse (later known as After Forever) in 1997 until they disbanded in 2009. She then did vocal coaching and formed her own band called Revamp which officially broke up in 2016 because of Floor's commitment to Nightwish.
The Rock Academy in the Netherlands is an actual Bachelors degree, conservatory style, but focusing on the rock/pop industry

Floor can alter the placement from her head voice to chest voice as if flicking a switch. Ghost Love Score live at Wacken, 2013, is an ideal starting point for showing a range of different vocal styles (though not all of them). She’s not the Swiss Army knife of singers because, to accommodate so many tools, the object is compromised. There is no compromise in her voice.

Nightwish has many videos that are live performances, 2013 and forward with Floor as the singer, two other singers prior to 2013. I have noticed over the years that many people's first introduction to the band is with the 2013 Wacken concert, most with Ghost Love Score, where Floor gets to show off many (but not all) of her vocal techniques and mix from head to deep chest all in one song. An even deeper dive is floors first band After forever . She was super talented even age 20. Also special from last album is song Shoemaker . It has an ending beautiful opera performance.

Floor is a vocal coaches dream to react to (which is why EVERY vocal coach channel on YT has at least one Nightwish reaction). Floor only had her first singing lessons at the age of 18, at a rock academy. She later learned the basics of classical music at a conservatory. Then there were metal growls. She attaches great importance to comprehensive training. She is a workaholic and when she has nothing to do she starts singing. She'll probably give a whole concert during the day. She sounds the same live and the bigger the audience, the better she sings. She thrives on the energy of the crowd. She sees herself as a metal singer, but recently released a pop album as a side project:
Floor Jansen - Storm (Official Music Video)
Mastermind Tuomas Holopainen has, among others, Hans Zimmer as a role model. The singer at the end is Troy Donockley and grew up in the Fok scene. He's not a vocal athlete, but fits in such quiet moments. Folk is another integral part of Tuoma's compositions.

@@VeronnaMusic I forgot that Floor is the third singer.
Tarja Turunen wanted to become an opera singer and finished her training with Art song. She established opera singing in metal:
NIGHTWISH - The Phantom Of The Opera (OFFICIAL LIVE)
      The Floor version:
Nightwish - The Phantom Of The Opera (ft. Henk Poort) (LIVE)
The second singer Anette Olzon was a pop singer:
Nightwish - Slow Love Slow live Montreux Jazz Festival 2012 HQ
There is also a Floor version here:
Floor Jansen - Slow, Love, Slow (Live)
The Ghost Love Score version from Wacken no longer corresponds to the original. The ending was too lame for Floor and she gave him a new one:
Nightwish - Ghost Love Score (WACKEN 2013)

Troy does sing one line different at the end there, the line "Last sighs on a deathbed" changes to "Last sighs of a million loves". It's a beautiful way to kind of zoom out even further and offer that different perspective of us coming from this long line of lives all with their own stories and dreams and adventures that we'll never know about. Honestly the theme of this song breaks my brain a bit but it's such an interesting thing to think about. Not many artists write about the stuff that Nightwish do and it's a breath of fresh air.

for me, Floor is the pinnacle of good singing techique. She can do it all with her voice, in a lot of registers, she masters breathing technique, she can do anything she wants and sing in any genre of music. Her full opera voice may not be as good as a full opera singer, because, as she said herself, singing opera was not her thing, so she just picked up some techniques and evolved into more rock singing. Trying to emulate what she does is almost a singing lesson in itself! Listen to anything from nightwish live, she is out of this world. I can't listen to studio versions of some songs anymore, it all sounds so bleh after you hear her vocie for real!

Floor got a bachelors degree at the Rock Academy and then half a masters education in Musical Theater. She focused on the classical singing, but you can also see it the way she moves on stage. I have always been more interested and involved in the instrumental side of music, but have learned to appreciate the infinite variety of voices. What I rarely see in comments is that Floor consider herself foremost as a metal vocalist.
She did a 4 year course at the Rock Academy in the Netherlands.
During or after Rock Academy she did 1 year classical/musical training.
She left because the focus was too much on theory than learning the technique.
Keep that in mind, only 1 year of classical training.
She also admitted that she's a vocal technique nerd.
Yes, there's a lot of effort and practice behind what for us mortals seems so effortless and easy.
What she can do with her voice was not handed to her on a silver plate.
Just my 2 cents why Floor is so good at what she does.

Hello from out west! Very much hope you can do some more Floor! Have to agree a bit with knutruther 4964, jerrybk1, and others that this is not the best introduction to Floor and Nightwish. The thing I notice most often about professional singers in reviews and their reactions, is that they like to see the shape of the singers mouth, jawline and tongue to really analyze their vocal technique. And on the "live" recommendation, another factor to consider is that, some are mic'd properly, and some are not; and some are _produced_ well and some are not. For this reason fans often recommend either the Wacken live concert 2013, or the "Beste Zangers" show 2019. You would LOVE the latter -- a really fun love-in of pro singers each taking turns trying to sing each others songs, from opera to western to rock! On these, Floor's TECHNIQUE (remember she has described herself in some interviews as a bit of a "technique junkie") probably comes through best on "Phantom of the Opera" (notice lower jaw and mouth shape), and her cover of Lady GaGa's "Shallow" (note breath control at very soft volume). The "Ghost Love Score" song recommended here is reported by UA-cam and the band to be the most reacted to of all music videos on the internet, with over 1,300 (as of 2 years ago, probably more now) reaction videos posted online, so it IS a "must watch", but also one almost everyone else has already done as well. Honourable mention for other "live" works goes to the Wembly 2015 Nightwish performance of "The Poet and the Pendulum", which, along with "Shallow", contains some of Floor's best SOFT vocals. Other covers she has done at home, and posted online, if you have a favorite song, are "Alone" by Heart; "Let It Go" from the movie Frozen; "Oblivion" from the movie with Tom Cruise; and probably the MOST IMPORTANT from your perspective as a professional, and A QUEBECER, she did one of the two great recognized covers of Lara Fabian's "ADAGIO" (the other being by Dimash), and of course you know who Lara is as being a fellow Quebecer! (And a great singer in her own right as well!). So. I subscribed, and look forward to more of your reactions!

Floor Jansen is a soprano, with an range of more than three octaves from C3 to F6. Her singing style varies from opera and clean singing to screaming and grunting. She usually sings in English, but she has also sung songs in Dutch, German, Spanish, Finnish, Latin, Italian and Swedish

I don't know how they are going to make it live - yes, we allways keep guessing, and still they surprise us in the end :)

You should react "The poet and the pendulum" live in Wembley 2015 of Nightwish. 😁😘

Loved the reaction (especially the smoothie rambling :) )... I would suggest "how's the heart" accoustic version to analyse next..

I'd recommend listening to Ghost Love Score from the Live at Wacken concert. You'll gain a much better understanding of Floor's substantial vocal range and incredible stage presence in a live setting.

Hi, very good idea to give Nighwish a listen.. but to truly appreciate Floor you need to immediately, quickly, find "Ghost Love Score Wacken Live 2013" All of your questions will then be answered, especially after the last two minutes of that performance. Good luck and Welcome
