- Mike Haduck shows his style of taking out and replacing a small piece of sidewalk slab. Alll my videos are my ways and ideas, I always suggest anyone doing any type of work to consult professional help.
Best stuff I have seen all day....I have been on a dirty ol tractor and planting corn in the wind. I really like Mikes work...
Thanks Dave, Mike
...."Not a big deal".........In Mike Haduck....WE TRUST !..........he makes it simple, encouraging us to "try" a project we never would consider before........your the Man!
Thanks Mark, I appreciate the kind words, mike
I just want to say how much I rely on your videos. We renovate for resale and you have taught me how to make small repairs myself...and I think they kook great. I kind of have a love affair with concrete now. Also, I have hired a pro to put in a 50ft. Walkway at my own residence, and you give me the means to make sure he is doing it properly...and he is. Thank you so much.
Thanks Susan, I appreciate it, Mike
I can't stop watching your videos. It's better than Breaking Bad. Amazing how generous you are with your knowledge and time. Thank you.
thanks wdcort, I enjoy making them, I appreciate it. mike
Mike, thank you for your prompt responses to all my and other people's questions, I really appreciate your time, your invaluable information and experience and a true gentleman. I would still love to buy a t-shirt with your saying "Ain't no big deal, just get it done" Thank you.
Hi V , I am working on that, just haven’t had the time to get it done, but I will, thanks mike
Simple, clear and extremely helpful. Thank you so much for saving me (and my wife) tons of time, money and aggravation.
I hope it helped, thanks mike
I enjoy your videos very much.
Thanks for taken the time and showed us all your techniques.
Thanks Gabriel, Mike
Thanks for this video. I did my first concrete job yesterday and it went perfectly. It was a side walk slab about twice as large as the one you did here. Knowing nothing about concrete I was kinda worried about how things would go but seeing how you worked eased my mind a bit.
Thanks Sean, I appreciate it. mike
Hello Mike,
I hope you're reading these comments because I want to pay you a compliment.
I know nothing about working with cement, but studying your videos gave me enough confidence to tackle a small job in my basement and save myself the cost of hiring someone.
Thanks for generously sharing your know-how.
John
Hi John, I appreciate it. I am glad for that, thanks mike
Great video. My dad and I poured a LOT of concrete when I was a kid for a business he started and built from the ground up - but it has been a lot of years. I needed to pour a few small slabs around my house to accommodate a new shed and to move my A/C unit, so this was a very helpful and thorough refresher course...and it brought back some fond memories as well. Thanks for sharing it!
You are an excellent teacher! Thank you for sharing you skills.
Thanks , Mike
I don't comment much, but you are my "Go to Guy" when it comes to my concrete projects.....Thanks !
thanks Capt. I appreciate it. mike
Mike, thank you for posting this video. This is the second time I used it. I am a weekend DIY and having a clear and concise video, based on time learn experience and usable tricks of the trade (busting up old side walk without giving yourself a hernia and using plastic to keep the area clean) is of immense value. Thanks again
Very well done Mike. Without trying to sound condescending, you did everything perfect. I like the added support to the existing sidewalk and very good job forming and finishing the concrete... Love seeing concrete done the right way versus some of the guys that are absolutely clueless.. Great video Mike..
I appreciate the comment, thanks mike
Thanks Dodger, it means a lot coming from you, mike
Thanks, Mike. Pouring 2 of these today, and watching this reminded me of a couple of things which will make my day easier. UA-cam is a great thing. Just in the last couple of months I have watched how to light a stubborn pilot light in a wall heater, repair the tub in my washer (saved $200), and now a rerfresher on the sidewalk. Heading into the day with confidence! Thanks for taking the time to make the vid =0)
+sparkymoo thanks, I appreciate it. mike
Thanks for this video, Mike. I do patch work like this and it never hurts to watch other guys do it their way. You can always learn a new thing. I liked how you use the plastic sheet at the end. I'm going to start doing that myself.
thanks chris, I be watching other guys and getting ideas myself, good to hear from the pros. thanks mike
You make it look so easy. I have mixed some bags of concrete in a wheelbarrow and thought it was hard work.
Thanks Pete, I guess I am use to it, thanks Mike
Thanks Mike! Got to pour 4 square on sidewalk tomorrow and now i know how to do it. I am an interior guy not exterior but it's good to know it all.
thanks Andres, I hope the video helped. Mike
Great Videos Mike. Really helps to see someone do a project, then I know how to set up my own stuff to complete around the house. Will be starting an exposed aggregate walkway so I'm taking notes.
thanks. everything helps. mike
Great video Mike. I've been looking for someone to do my sidewalk, but watching your videos have inspired me to try and do it myself. This winter has made a mess of my sidewalk and brick steps. I patched up my stucco wall using your method and it turned out fine.
Great, I saved someone some money and you probably had fun, keep it up. thanks mike
Mike thanks for sharing your skill and knowledge. It is appreciated.
Thanks Bill, mike
Great Job! The city is quoting us 1000 dollars to replace a sidewalk. We're gonna try to see if we can save a bit of money and do it ourselves. Thanks so much for your video, Mike.
thanks, I hope it helps, ask the local pros and concrete company for their recommendation for the mix, especially if the city inspects it. mike
Great job sir! Glad I found your channel. 👍
Thanks J,
Another very informative video. Thank's Mike. You channel is the first I go to when I'm eating my breakfast. Keep them coming! /John
Excellent, Mike! Thanks. I intend to use your simple, easy-to-follow instructions to lay a concrete sidewalk sometime this summer.
thanks, I hope it all works out. thanks mike
Great job Mike! 👍
thanks J. mike
I need to do a partial walk way. Thank you! Your Demonstration was much easier to understand...A+
thanks Meet up, I appreciate it. mike
7:14 , I love it when the professionals use the technical terms. ;)
that's what happens when yer 60, can't remember dem proper names. lol. mike
James Zawacki n
Love the comment of not throwing it way over your head. Use the tool properly. Small stuff like that i would automatically know your a professional
Thanks again jacob,, Mike
Love how you do stuff very impressive old school but very good school thanks mike
Thanks Mike, Mike
Hi Mike. Good video. Trying to pick up some finishing techniques for concrete because I work for a company that installs catch basins and does 8x8 drain pads, sidewalk repair, steps, ect. Trying to find some new techniques and keep customers happy. But just thought I'd let you know that the "cracks" you were talking about at 7:35 are actually called expansion joints and they help prevent the concrete from cracking during the changes in temperature throughout the seasons making them last longer. And the tool you use to make them is nicknamed a "jointer" Great video though man appreciate it.
Ryan Hansen thanks Ryan, everybody got different names for everything for sure, I will be putting on part 2 within the next couple days, a whole different way of doing it. thanks mike
Thanks for the video, Mike, beautiful work.
I appreciate it , thanks mike
Great video. Very informative. Thanks.
WOW, you make it look so easy....dang! nice job
thanks anthony, I appreciate it. mike
Great videos Mike! Thanks for the education.
thanks Fuzz, I appreciate it. mike
Nice work, getting ready to do a small add on.
Thanks Phil, I hope it works out, Mike
Thank you for sharing this awesome video
Thanks Tony, Mike
Good job thanks for the video
Thanks Ever, mike
Portland and Sand is a Cement mixture. Adding rock aggregate makes it Concrete mixture.
Correct, thanks Mike
Good helpful video great work Mike, I’ve just subscribed to your channel. Can’t understand the dislikes, they must be experts lol. Like you said everyone has there own way of doing things...I like yours...simple & cheap that’s me lol
thanks Dave, I appreciate it. mike
Mike you're awesome
Just passing along what the old times taught me, I appreciate it. mike
Mike could you do a video how how you operate your business? How you get work, if you advertise, what kind of truck you work out of. I think that would be really interesting. Thanks, Ryan
Hi Ryan, check out my video, "How I bid a mason job" Mike Haduck, , I think I do a lot of it there, thanks mike
Nice work, Mike. Too bad the customer didn't have you resurface the rest of the walkway with cement-all or Portland to make it more uniform.
I had the opposite issue with a raised slab because of roots from a bush. Had to remove the bush, undermine the slab, get the roots out, and let the slab settle down to its original position. Where the bush was I put in concrete brick pavers. Big improvement for little cost.
that's it. most folks can do lot of things for little or no cost, and just got to see how someone else did it. thanks for the comment. mike
The addative heavy aggregate as gravel changes the molecular binding agents with sand and Rock makes a lot stronger slab. And as far as rebar as cheapest rebar is it can hold concrete slab together if it settles our gets a crack and keep it from separating. for its cheapest it is I recommend using it always.
Hi Pete, experience usually dictates my decisions, but it is always good to get perspectives, thanks mike
This video is great. Thanks!
thanks Cesar, I appreciate it.. mike
Technically the bull float you use is best for it you can also use a large rectangle plaster trowel if your pro. But for side walks screed is important to create higher quality finished crete. Plus edge with a bit of vibration the bull float the final edge unless you wanna finish the small line as someone mentioned.
that's good advice, and whatever works is fine, check out my other videos on concrete finishing, God bless. mike
Thanks Mike... gave me new ideas . :-)
That is some fine work! One question. Around my way, I often see the masons leave the little "flat" left by the edger and joint tool but I saw you float it smooth. Is that just personal preference? I think I like your way better, btw.
sure it all depends on preference. I did it that way to match the rest. The swiming pools guys don't leave any lines, so I kind of do it that way. Its all preference I think thanks. mike
Mr. Haduck, first and foremost, I love your videos. As I've commented before, your videos have taught me so much about concrete ( I am new to masonry ). Next, I plan on doing a small sidewalk/path in my backyard in the near future. But I live in North Carolina where we have tough, hard clay "soil" which makes drainage an issue. I know I have to lay a bed of gravel before I pour the cement, but approximately how many inches of gravel do you think I should lay? I have seen/been told the standard is 4 inches, but with me having clay, do I need to add a few inches?
Hi Mike, around here we use about 4 inches of modified or gravel depending, down there I wouldn't think you get as much freezing weather, whatever you think as long as the water dosent go toward the house, I would ask some local masons to make sure, thanks mike
I have to do this at my sons house this spring. Just wanna make sure that I prepare the ground before I pour the concrete. What gravel do you use.
Hi Scott, a lot depends on your weather and which way you want the water to go, thanks mike
Hi Mike. Sometimes I notice voids on the slab edge after the forms are removed. Aren't you suppose to pack the concrete somehow to make sure these voids are filled. I thought you would use the butt end of a 2x4 to pack the concrete down, especially in the corners, before screeding. I think in big industrial jobs they use vibrators.
+Nicholas Hoffenpiper sometimes I use them but not for a small job. voids are usually a normal thing no matter what you do. and I usually fill them before I leave. thanks mike
Great videos and great advice.
When the concrete apron meets the garage floor what do you recommend to use for a gap-filling sealer/polyurethane? Tremco Dymonic FC. What do you use or recommend? Thank you.
Keep up the great work!!😎
Hi Steven. I usually use a sill seal when I pour the concrete and never have to seal it afterwards. Sometimes just plastic. But every job is different, and every madon thinks different, I hope it helps , mike
Love your videos. Love the one about sidewalks in China and Denmark. You show replacing a slab or two, do you have any on a full sidewalk? Each block in front of my house has some sort of damaged.
I was wondering about when you put dividers in between the blocks and use those felt separators. Or do you just pour the whole walk way and score the concrete into "blocks?"
Thanks for sharing!
Hi DJ, I would say it all depends on who you’re working for,Whos job it is, And what you’re trying to accomplish in a short period of time, you could always take your time and do one piece at a time, there’s no right or wrong way to do it, as long as it works, I hope it helps thanks Mike
Mike Haduck Masonry thanks! I'll take it all into consideration.
Thanks again for sharing your talent!
Thanks for your videos. Really enjoy them and handy for an old place like we have. Any need to add re bar for a sidewalk?
Hi Jeff, every situation is different but unless trucks are driving over it, I will seldom even use wire, I hope it helps thanks mike
Great video! Mike I am doing a large concrete slab - 15 by 15 and I will put pavers on top. Can I do the slab in sections? Connect them with rebar maybe?
Fuzzle
Hi Fuzzle, I did some videos on "paver patios" Mike Haduck, check them out , they might answer your questions, thanks mike
Mike what kind of pre-mix cement do you prefer to do sidewalks in Pennsylvania? Would you use the same for a small patio? What part of Pa are you in, I’m in Valley Forge.
Thanks,
Adam
Hi Adam, scranton area, if it is more than 5 or 6 wheelbarrows I usually call a truck, I learned with quikrete to add a little extra Portland, my opinion, mike
Mike Haduck Masonry thanks! Is it just the standard Quickrete “concrete mix” that you like to use mostly?
You’re only 2 hours away, though I wish you were closer because I am constantly getting concrete repair jobs out here and have no one to refer the work to, that is why I have started to learn concrete work and do the jobs myself (though my back can’t handle much work that is bent over.)
Adam
Great job, thanks.
thanks J, I appreciate it. mike
Thanks mike, found his number.
Great video series! If the section you plan to replace is still "connected" to the neighboring section, is there any way to separate it without using a large heavy duty circular saw? Perhaps with a chisel?
Hi Michael, if its a small section I will use a 15 dollar 7 inch diamond blade and put it in myr regular circular saw, or grinder and then it should break easy,
all situations are a bit different, I hope it helps, thanks mike.
GREAT VIDEO!
I appreciate it , thanks mike
Thanks for the video
thank you, mike
Hi Mike,
The last slab I poured I covered it with new burlap. The burlap stained the concrete. I read that you should wash the burlap first to prevent this. Have you ever had this happen? Is there a way to get the staining out? Acid wash? or just paint it with portland?
Thanks,
John
John Woolfrey Hi john, I never used burlap, I personally would just wait for more than a month or more before I do anything, painting with Portland would be a last resort. and acid might do more harm than good, my opinion, mike
thanks again for taking time to make these. here in MN was watching the neighbors sidewalk get poured and the didnt pack any gravel at all underneath and curious to see how it lasts. i thought it was standard practice to pack stones into the earth before a pour. do you accept donations somehow?
Hi Thor, I would say it all depends on the, job, I am not after any Money, but you could buy a tee shirt or tool from amazon , I get a little commission, thanks Mike
Maybe your weather isn't cold enough to need gravel base. I was in MN (Duluth) and the temperature was all the way up to 70 (July). Is that about the same as in winter in your area?
Hi Mike .... your videos are great. Gave me the courage to pour a small slab...5’ by 3’ . But I think my mix could’ve used more water. I think I can fix it ... maybe rubbing with a stone or grinder or putting a skim coat... but I poured it 2 days ago .... should I wait until it cures first ? Or can I attempt to fix it now? Any thought will be great ..... Thank You!!!
hi mark , when trying to fix a slab I usually do it as soon as possible while the cement is not fully cured, how you want to do it is your decision, and 3 by 5 I might even try again, , I hope it helps, thanks mike
Thanks Mike .... I’m going to try to fix it first .... if it doesn’t work I’ll start over. Thank you for reply and your videos.... they really do inspire...
What is the science behind using gravel? What would have happened if the walkway was made with portland and sand only?
Hi Luis, I would say you could and I have in some cases, it's a filler, and a lot more inexpensive, my opinion, Mike
Master
WOW! didnt know you didnt need a mixer...i may just try that...old school
***** I got a couple mixers but rarely use them, it is many times easier mixing b hand, thank mike
Question for you Mike: Do you have any advice for troweling Thin Set to 1/4 inch, so it will be consistently 1/4". Is there a special Trowel, or anything you can think of, so I dont wind up with a moon-scape of lumps!
Hi, I usually use a straight edge and go from point to point, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck Thanks , you always answer!. I tried 1/4" Notched trowel, then flipped it to smooth it out.
You have launched me on a concrete journey!
Hey mike thanks so much for your videos. Is rebar not a necessity in sidewalks. Would it be helpful in making sure they don’t crack
Hi Jeff, if you are going to be driving big trucks over them then yes , but if you are just walking on them and cutting grass no, rebar eventually expands and breaks the concrete up as years go by, around here I usually separate each pad or saw them and rarely have a problem, my opinion, thanks, mike
I watch your videos everyday, but after watching so many videos, I believe, that I'm yet to see you use concrete expansion joints, is this true? Do you not like them? I've seen you use plastic instead both indoor and outdoor so I'm wondering if expansion joints aren't really needed. Thank you for sharing.
Hi V. Concrete sprinks before it expands and a lot of those expansion joints leave too big a gap, every situation is different, thanks, mike
Mike, thank you for your prompt responses to all my and other people's questions, I really appreciate your time, your invaluable information and experience and a true gentleman. I would still love to buy a t-shirt with your saying "Ain't no big deal, just get it done" Thank you.
I dont understand the purpose of putting down a plastic layer. Why would it be bad for the concrete to stick to the gravel? Seems like that would be a good thing and keep it more stable over time. Also why do you add so much gravel to your mix? Thanks.
Hi ,I did not put plastic under the slab just on the sides so it does not dirty the older concrete, I used less gravel than most ans added extra Portland which I always do in my area, thanks Mike
Mike, I need to pour my new garage floor with a drain, do you have any upcoming or previous projects I can reference ?.............Mark in Dunstable, MA
Hi mark, maybe my smooth finish concrete videos have a couple, thanks mike
Hi Mike. I need to pour a 10 cm thick concrete slab that surrounded by concrete blocks already on all sides. It's going to support a System bath unit. I have a lot of old concrete chunks that are broken up in good shape. Can I mix these with the new concrete as a filler? If so how?
hey mike how are you? when using the bagged cement do you add a shovel of portland?
Hi, I add at least a trowel full to a 50 lb bag, but that's me
Mike, 2 questions
First, I'm planning on pouring a cement pad for a shed. What size gravel do I use?
Second question,
I'm looking to hire someone to dig out an old rotted tree stump where I want to put a shed. I was wondering if you'd be interested in the job of digging out the stump. I live in moosic two blocks from your bandmate. Thanks for the video.
Howdy, I would call Robin Dommermuth, for the digging and he would tell you what to do about the gravel. I can't tell folks what to use or how to do it over the internet, . Mike knows robins number. I appreciate the comment and offer, thanks mike
Michael., BraVo!
Lots of PropS! for the Trade & Respect for your dedication & Swift flow in ur work. Thank you
yU' R the M@n!/
Thanks Joseph, I appreciate it, Mike
Hi mike, a customer of mine needs a small 5f by 5f 8 inch thick slab built to hold a 300lb toolshed, vertically it's about 8f. Could i just use just Quikrete concrete mix? If you have a second I would appreciate it thank you.
Hi Nathan, I have done it that way before, thank, mike
@@MikeHaduck Thanks mike!!👍
Hi Mike,
at time 2:30 you put down plastic to isolate the new slab from the old one. I'm putting a 2nd sidewalk slab down next to one I poured last year (6ft wide) and I don't want to put a foam board between them that will create a gap. Is it ok to use the plastic like you did?
Thanks,
John
John Woolfrey I can't tell anyone what to do, but if I did a slab one by one I would just keep using the plastic, my opinion thanks mike.
two questions . do u use a release agent on the wood so the concrete don't stick ? Is it better to add to much water then not enough ? I had a problem where the rocks in cement started making there way up when I was smoothing top out .
I never use a release agent unless I am forming something like stone caps, I would say too much water weakens the cement, I just make sure it is screeted or tamped enough for the cream to come to the top, maybe you used a little too much gravel, I am sure you will get it down after a few time, concrete will teach as you do it more, I hope it helps , thanks mike
+Mike Haduck thanks for the help .love the channel
thanks, mike
Thanks!
I hope it helps, thanks mike
Why didn't you want the concrete to stick to the old slab? I guess the plastic creates another control joint for controlling cracking.
+Nicholas Hoffenpiper yep, I use it as a control joint. everybody got their own way. thanks mike
+Mike Haduck why do you put gravel to the cement?
+Nerf Masters It is basically a filler, common to pouring concrete, saves in material, lot of reasons I guess, but my best opinion, thanks mike
+Mike Haduck well thanks the answer my question
Great video Mike. How can we do this with a pitch toward the long side?♡
Hi Susan, the first thing to ask is “ where is the water going to go”, that’s the question, thanks mik
@@MikeHaduck yes. The small narrow walkway on the West side of the home...is abutting the house. When we arrived it had been cracked s ok me how and allowing water that rain off it to drop through the cracked cement in turn seeping through the granite foundation.....the question is what can should i put under the cement pieces so i can patch it together? Or should I pull out and do new??♡ thank you♡
Mike, What is coolest temp you can safely replace a single sidewalk section with premixed store bought concrete?
+trepan my rule of thumb is as long as it does not freeze for at least 3 full days, but then it depends on how cold it gets,,,,and some cover it with heat blankets, everybody got their own opinion, if I could use a fast drying cement like I did on part 2 , I think it would make a big difference, again my opinion, thanks mike
Do you need to use the stones? Can I just mix with sand only?
+MrXinsizionx I have done it that way, lot more mixing and cement, check out part 2 when I used the store bought concrete, thanks, I hope it helps, mike
+MrXinsizionx __ The purpose of the stones is to provide for a durable, stone-like finished product which is referred to as concrete. Sand and cement only is essentially a mortar mix which is less durable (weaker) than concrete.
👍
Thanks Ray, mike
So just curious (I don't know anything about concrete) why add sand and gravel to the mix? Is the concrete itself not enough?
misselissalk you could go and buy a (ready mix - pre mix) and use that where there is no adding sand or gravel, but old school you bought the cement and then added the sand and gravel just like doing a recipe for cooking, everything matters. I want to do another video with the pre-mix but haven't come across one yet, thanks mike
misselissalk Per Wikipedia: "The presence of aggregate greatly increases the durability of concrete above that of cement, which is a brittle material in its pure state. Thus concrete is a true composite material."[35
GSMSfromFV a better explanation than mine, thanks mike
How many inches of gravel and what kind do you use as a base for freezing climates?
HI EstPaul, I would say it all depends on the area, sometimes modified sometimes gravel, around here I usually use about 4 inches of gravel, or If I do not want water running under it, Modified,, I hope it helps, thanks mike
Hi Moon, like railroad tracks, area weather determines the needed base, different in the southern states then up here, I have seen frost go 6 feet deep, thanks mike
Did you guy brush traction lines? My first one I poured I never did and when it rained the owner and dogs were slipping🤤
Hi Jay, traction lines or as we call it is a broom finish or a float finish with give the same results, that is the norm for outside concrete, a smooth finish is usually for inside, I don;t know what else to say, everybody says different, thanks mike
Mike Haduck yes I realized that after watching the video again..thanks..been learning alot from ya.
thanks Jay, I appreciate it. mike
Thank you! Nice helpful video.
thanks, I hope it helped, mike
Hey mike! What did you charge for this small job?
Hi Rick, a days pay, mike
I need to make a footer 12 inches thick could i use a 2x12 even though its a 11 and a half inches?
Hi William, with footers the inspector always tell the inspector what I am using before I do it, that way no problems, I hope it helps, thanks mike
Why you didnt put any re-bars on this?
+jared verse It is just a walk way, if cars were driving over it or heavy machines it would be a different story. thanks mike
Mike I live in NE PA. Is it too cold to do cement work outside?
I Lenny, It all depends, If I do not get freezing temps for 3 days I am confident with concrete, other say different, thanks mike
Mike, thank you for getting back to me. Appreciate it.
Thanks, mike
Do you mix lime in ever
Hi Farmer, I never use lime when it’s laying flat on the ground, like sidewalks or stone patios etc. etc. I only use Portland, now before portland it was all paver and stone sidewalks, Because line does not hold up on the ground, my opinion, thanks Mike
Do you ever provide consultation???
Not really, I just use that in case some govt guy is trying to stop me from working , I just say I am consulting, If you know what I mean, thanks mike
man thats an easier way to mix diy concrete in a wheelbarrow, i did this today instinctively ahh i mean cos im lazy and mixing sand and portland first is so much easier on the arms.
Thanks, Mike
Mike where do you buy the screed key?
Hi Matt, usually a masonry supply company, some areas of the country don't carry it, thanks mike
@@MikeHaduck I’m up in the WB/Scranton Pa area, know anyone up this way?
@@l3isquick Lehigh construction supply exeter
how much water ratio did you use?
mot nguyen just enough to get it to where I wanted it. sometimes the sand and gravel is wet so, again, it all depends. thanks mike
Great. Thanks for an informative video. I was thinking of hiring people to do this but now I know how to do it myself.
what do you do with leftover mixed concrete?
Hi Luv, 95% of the time we have the driver take it back, thanks mike
scrape it onto plastic let it dry and find a dumpster the next day
Eat it
I think if he used a trowel he would of had a better finish....
Hi Mike, float finishes were the standard in the day, broom finish was considered cheap, thanks Mike
