You're the "Bob Ross" of concrete, haha! I've watched lots of videos about repairing concrete because our porch needs some patching, and I don't want to pay thousands of dollars to have it jackhammered, which is what most local companies want to do. This was the best, by far! I'm ready to tackle my little porch! I was an art teacher for many years, and have been doing home projects since I was 20. This will be a new one to try.

I've thought that same thought before. Bob Ross of stone masons. It must be true! Great video, proof that we can use the mortar mix on the porch steps even in the thinner spots! Thanks Mike!

Thru the whole video I was thinking what you finally said at the end -“A patch is a patch is a patch..” So true. Patching concrete is a real art. I was never much of a patch man myself, but when I found a good one, I would hang on to him, whatever it took! Sometimes I would have to pay a good patch man as much as I paid lead carpenters. They’re hard to find..

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and experience! We moved into our home three years ago, and our retaining wall and 50 year-old bricks are falling apart. Learning characters of mud, Portland, cement, quickset, cement, sand, gravels, watering concrete first, etc helped me to understand how masonry materials work together. So excited to be able to do some work in my backyard without asking my bank to loan some money!

I love the old-school technique as they do last longer than modern stuff in construction and cost less when you are trying to budge. I agree that cemented on its own is a bonding agent when activated with water but you really do need to keep on top of things when you're doing it yourselves. My late father taught me old-school techniques in construction and I still use them today at my own home. Great video thank you as it is always good to see old school techniques used in DIY it also saves you hundreds of $$$$$/£££££.

Great video Mike. Well, I'm done for the season. I accomplished a lot thanks to you and your knowledge. It was a long 6 months. Worth it though. A few hiccups, some blood, sweat and tears but all and all it worked out well. I'll pick up in March of next year, God willing. This video will come in handy when I strip the large patio deck - next year. The pitting isn't as bad as what you repaired but not great. About 4 layers of old chipping paint too. Hope you're well, and I'll keep on watchin'. Have a safe winter.

Non-shrink grout will outlast the pavement around it, and it's super solid. There's a structural epoxy, and that in combination with the structural grout is very hard to destroy. You just have to keep it wet while it cures with a wet towel over the top. I patched my garage with it, and it's great. Just my additional two cents.

Found the Rapid Set Mortar mix works well for the flatwork repairs we do Mike.
Great video and discussion of the two approaches.
The Mortar mix I've used so far has a fairly gritty sand stone aggregate; bigger and gives better traction than a smaller sand. It works really well on a drive. Customers seem to like that it cures quick and doesn't allow our mason crew to stand around and wait for the older Portland to harden. We're in we're out.

Got some hair cracks on driveway that insurance wants repaired, time constraint too as it has to be done before April 21, I have never done it, now in my case I dont think it has to look pretty, just repaired; I will reckon they will see the difference between the newly patched strips and old concrete but I am hoping as long as they see the hairline is filled they will settle down, the driveway is about 21 years old. Insurances are a pin in the arse to say the least; the cracks are there but does not present any "security" risk as they claim is the reason to want the repairs, if the slab would brake in half and a section lift off that is a different matter but that is not the case now, anyways, glad I watched here, great tips. I am using just quickrate cement patch.

Mike I'm in the UK and working on a wall in my garden and trying to match an existing wall (dressed limestone) my cottage is dated at about 1830 ish, after watching your video's every time I come across a problem I find myself asking what would Mike do ! If you are ever back in the UK look me up, I'd love to take around some of the old stonework in the Cotswolds and some of the Welsh castles. Great video as always.

Quikrete makes a cement in a bucket which is an Anchoring Cement that is runny and designed to expand when it dries so you can pour it around a hand-rail. So I think I will mix a little of that in with the portland and sand so that it will not shrink and crack.
