    This is such an excellent video, that I viewed it again, and there is another point, that came to my mind: I use the external inputs with a Lavalier microphone from RØDE, the ones you can clip to your shirt. With an adapter from 3,5 to 6,3 you could plug it in, but these work with only 4 V of phantom power. Therefore, you need an adapter from TLS to XLR with a voltage reduction from 48 V to 4 V.

    - You can also power the device with reloadable NiMH-batteries. In the menu, there is a setting, where you can switch between alkaline and NiMH.
    - Not all condensor mikes work with 48 V. In the menu, you can switch between 24 V and 48 V.
    - The mikes are not just folded for transportation. They are cardioid, not spherical. Thus, if folded out (the AB configuration) there is a sector right in the middle between them with signficant less sensibility, which in certain recording conditions you do not want. Folded in (the XY configuration), their lobes overlap in the middle. That reduces the segregation of the two channels, but in my opinion yields better results when recording a single source in front of you. Be aware, that the L/R channels are interchanged with each other: The left mike records the R channel and v.v. You can interchange the channels in the menu.

    I just bought DR-40 and it was uber helpful. It's my first time with device like this. I'm just getting into UA-cam :)
    I also have lavalier mic BOYA BY-M1 PRO which does not work through line-in jack and I think it's because I have stereo adapter from 3,5mm to 1/4 jack. I'll buy new adapter and see if it works!
    I bought this tascam specifically to record myself on motorcycle, recorder goes to my backpack and records motorcycle sound and then I have separate channel for lavalier mic to my helmet :)

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  2 роки тому

      They are very nice recorders and I am sure you will like it. Also with or without the correct adapter a recorder with only Line IN cannot record from Mic Level input, you must set the input to MIC level for it to work with your BOYA BY-M1. Line-IN signal is already amplified whereas the MIC level input is not amplified and the signal is extremely weak.

    Just orded one of these and you're video will give me a big head start in learning to use it. I'll mostly be using it to record (very loud) rehearsals and live gigs, any suggestions on good setting and mic setups would be great. Most tutorials and reviews tend to concentrate on the performance with low volumes but not much about recording high levels.

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  2 роки тому

      Make sure to set the recordings at two sound levels. Since we don't know exactly how loud it is going to be you need to experiment between different Negative db settings. These are so good that you can even use them in rock concerts if you set the record level to very low.

    • @Yosser70
      @Yosser70 2 роки тому +1

      @@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 Thanks for that. The safety recording at the lower level is one of the reasons I went for the DR-40x. I’d assume it’s better to record too low and pull up in software rather than risk clipping.

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  2 роки тому +2

      @@Yosser70 @Dave Hughes Good point, so what you do is set the volume at the middle (comfortable zone for your ears) then if the ambient sound is too loud you can hear it crack or distort. Also, the sound level bars on the screen will be stuck at max indicating over bias to the audio pre-amplifier.

    Starting UA-cam channel on botanicals, it’s historic uses for medicinal purposes, etc.. Is a recorder/Tascam necessary? I’m focusing on low budget. New Sony ZV-1 vlogging camera, Sony Bluetooth shooting grip, Mavic drone. Rode Wireless Go Mic’s. Luma Fusion for editing.. How would I benefit from the Tascam?

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  3 роки тому +2

      I don't think this recorder would be useful to you, because botanical plants don't generate sounds. If your channel was about animals or other sounds of nature such as ocean waves, waterfalls etc. then you would definitely need one of these.

      For human voice, specially in a video production stereo will sound uneven between the right and left speakers. It will favor one speaker over the other depending on the angle of audio source reaching the two microphones. So when a person is watching a video on a TV the voice of the person speaking will not feel like it's coming from the center of the TV screen, instead it will be felt to your ears from either right or left side of the TV screen

Although no where in this manual tascam.com/downloads/products/tascam/dr-40x/7l_dr-40x_om_vb.pdf it says that it will charge the batteries though USB, my personal experiment suggests that it will. When I plugged in the USB I got 4.8V DC power on the battery terminals when the unit is ON, and 5.1V when it is OFF. Both of which are enough to charge 3x 1.2V =3.6V Lithium ion or NiMH batteries.

      Chose the option " YES " when it asks you are you sure. The reason it is asking this question is that it will format the SD Card and delete all the existing data. Since your SD Card is new you don't have to worry about data deletion.

    Phantom power is necessary to use condenser mics. NO, phantom power will not destroy a dynamic mic. It will, however, destroy a ribbon mic.

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  Рік тому

      Phantom power is necessary for both Electrolytic mics and condenser Mics because they have a transistor that requires power to operate. Also, the Dynamic Mic is nothing more than a wire coil around a magnet and the end of the coil is attached to a diaphragm. The DC Resistance of this coil usually ranges between 150 to 600 ohms which are too little resistance for 48V DC. This will magnetize the coil and push the diaphragm to one side causing damage to both the coil and the sensitive diaphragm.

      I can't be a good judge on that because I have never used a Zoom H4N. However my friend spoke very highly of it, but he had the Zoom 4HN Pro black edition. For live recording I am pretty happy with my Tascam DR-40X, I love the dual level recording in case the sound source peaks too high, you have a backup copy at lower volume.

    How well does it handle loud sources like concerts?

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  2 роки тому

      Under normal settings in a Rock Concert the recordings will b extremely distorted and noisy. However if you choose the dual level sound bias recording, and chose very low recording levels, then it will be acceptable. It's worth mentioning that in both cases the recording will not be crystal clear, because the concert speakers are so powerful that they generate unwanted vibration sounds from the surrounding objects which will be picked up by this recorder.

      Hi, the internal microphones are great for capturing sounds outside, however you must have wind blockers installed on them or else you will get tons of loud wind noise. For personal talking unless you hold it close to your mount it will capture unwanted background noise. So for that I recommend using a clip on microphone which you can ware, but even that mic must have a good wind blocker on it. For your guitar you can use the a standard XLR cable if your Guitar is Acoustic with no audio port then you can use it's internal mics to record. However you must do it in a quite room because this mic is very sensitive and it will pickup background noise also other than the Guitar sound.

      @@user-gk6bw1xz6y If you are outdoors and need to pickup remote sounds of birds, crickets, and other wildlife you want to set it at high sensitivity. However if you are indoors and in a live music situation then you need low sensitivity or else it will max out and you will get distortion. Also remember that this unit has dual level recording, meaning it can be set to record with two audio level settings in case one maxes out you can use the lower level sound track.

    Hi thanks for this tutorial, i have a microphone Deity D3 Pro can i plug it into this audio recorder?

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  2 роки тому +1

      Hi, the Deity D3 Pro is a Shotgun mic for DSLR cameras, so it doesn't come with the XLR cable. So you need to buy the correct adapter for it first and only then you can plug it to this. Also that is a Condenser Mic which requires power, if you use a battery inside the mic you don't need to turn on the Phantom Power for it. Last but not least Shotgun mics are very sensitive to vibration so make sure to have a vibration proof rubber band mount or a spring mount for it.

    Thank you so much for such an informative video! Now I know that I'd need a windscreen and extra SD cards.
    May I ask if the Tascam dr-40x's internal mic is suitable for recording ambient, nature sounds?
    I'd like to film and record nature like waves washing up the beach, winds blowing through the forest, raindrops hitting the ground and such.
    If yes, would it be better to have the mics spread outwards to record the sound around me?

    Great video, I’m new to using portable recorders. Like you, I want to record my keyboard and piano. This may be a silly question but can I plug the keyboard or piano straight into the tascam if I had the correct leads so that it would record the keyboard into the recorder? If so, I take it I could listen to the sound through headphones? Also, could I upload the sounds I produce onto GarageBand? Thanks again 👍

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  3 роки тому +1

      Indeed that is exactly how you are supposed to do it, it is not recommended to record the keyboard sounds through the Microphones. If you use the microphone you will have to many unwanted noises and the sound quality will not be as good. So you simply need to buy two XLR cables one for right channel and one for left channel, and connect them to the LINE OUT of your keyboard. Every keyboard has a different LINE OUT interface so make sure to get the correct cable for your keyboard.
