I have one of these recorders, and I use it to record thunderstorms, foley, impulse responses, and ambience. I have not been disappointed with it since I got it.
Wow... You really know your stuff. I had to keep backing up so I could remember how to do certain functions. I think this is one of the best values I have found. If you break it all down, the number of features for the dollars spent is incredible.
A wonderful no-nonsense video, the good, the bad etc, so yeah a worthwhile option for those of us on the hunt for a decent hands-on review. Thank you kindly.
I like mine a lot but be aware of one thing--the preamps are noisy, so if you want to use dynamic or even less sensitive condenser mics you really need a FetHead or some sort of clean preamplification before the signal goes into the device. (Lately I have been using a small Behringer mixer for this.) Check out Julian Krause's review of this device--he does measurements. That said, the built-in mics are awesome though very sensitive to plosives. The overdubbing and mixing capabilities are fun to play with, though frankly I prefer to work with a more traditionally laid-out multitrack unit like the DP008EX.
Not very familiar with all connections etc is the XLR connected directly from mic to Tascam DR40X ? No other devises meaning. Thanks for your very clear descriptive video. PS i bpoght this Tascam this morning 9th May 2024
Some people were saying that there was "White Noise" that comes from the xlr output, but I did not hear any even with noise cancelling headphones on while watching this video. GREAT JOB! Awesome video!
I've seen and read that, using the DR-40X and placing a studio mic it will turn off you have to contact Tascam about the issue(s) it's a build issue which is now fixed.. Test you Tascam DR-40X to find out if you have this issue and return it.. and get the one that's fixed don't wait..
Can anyone help....? I've set up Record mode as INT STEREO / DUAL RECORD. Hit 'record' - flashes - set levels - hit record again - solid red. Then....it records for 5 seconds and stops recording and flashes red again. It then counts this 5 sec recording as a ''track'' in the Music Files. It's like there is a setting somewhere which is allowing only for 5 seconds of recording. Same thing happens if I use Ext Line In. PS... I've had this for 2 yrs but only learning to use it the last few days. I wonder if it is a software update issue. Any help much appreciated. Wanted to use it tonight....
I was wondering about the headphone output jack on the Teac DR-40. I'm recording directly into the Teac and would like to connect the headphone jack to a camera's mic jack. My question is what quality can I expect coming out of the headphone jack on the Teac? I'm planning to use the audio stored on the Teac because I'm sure it would be better than the output. thank you
I want to be able to record direct from a mixing desk, live bands. Is this achievable by connecting the XLR leads (left and right) to jack leads (left and right), coming from the mixing desk?
@@Tech_HD1 Yeah, I watched many videos, trying to decide to buy it or not. I'm just worried that a couple videos have shown it's plagued by electrical interference from other electrical objects, even just walking down the street.
@@Tech_HD1 ok cool, that gives me more confidence in it, thanks. At least it comes with 3 year warranty here so I should be able to take it back if I find it does it.
You must have excellent sound treatment. in that room I'm listening with my Audio Technica headset that seems to pick up everything since it removes the lows (It's a recording headphone) and I don't hear much ambient noise at all (especially if you didn't use a noise reduction and that's raw audio. I just got mine today and everything I record (even in that 50-55% range) has a considerable amoun of ambient and input noise from the amps. Are you doing anything specific that makes your audio that clean? Are you no normalizing your audio?
Sadly no. It can only be set as a X/Y or a A/B Pattern and internally the device recognizes that it’s been switch but there no setting or a way for it to stay in the middle
This is great video for me, as I will probably buy one of these. I was wondering if I would be able to attach an xlr cable from my keyboard to it? And if I can plug in a 1/4 inch cable from by bass guitar directly for multi-track recording, overdubbing and saving files? Thank you.
You can plug an XLR Cable into it, not sure from the keyboard though. Never tried it. And you should be able to connect a 1/4 inch cable into it as well
Thank You and Most likely. The USB Connection will most likely not give off enough power to power the Recorder and a Condenser Mic since that requires 48v Phantom Power
I bought one of these a few weeks ago to improve the sound quality of my videos and while that's worked I knew this thing could do a LOT more than I was using it for... and I really didn't know what some of the settings meant. Thanks! Now my only real complaint about the thing is that it was made in China...
So the DR-40X is similar to the D100. But the D100 provides 192kHz/24 Bit and has 32 GB of internal storage. But then there that BIG price difference ($170 vs $998)
Hi, please may you help me. I do asmr video and I will buy 3dio binaural microphone and B1-E dummy head later. OK. Do you think that I can use or tascam DR 40X or zoom H 4n with both ? Thanks
So at the moment I do have other videos scheduled and planned. After all that done, I will start to do more How To Videos. Are you looking on how to make a stream overlay or how to add it into OBS Studio?
I like the way you positioned the unit so I could follow your tutorial. You don't act like a know-it-all even though it's obvious you have the mojo goin' on this gear. You say stuff like "you won't need most of this stuff if you use it mainly for recording" which encourages idiots like myself to get at least a basic understanding of the DR-40X because I am a musician and if I don't record my bits and pieces I use to build a song, those puppies are GONE forever!! All musicians can relate to that. So, anyway, as I follow you over and over, I am slowly makin progress. Thanks for the groovy tutorial because this device is complex but by breaking it down, you help me to learn. Cheers O' Mighty Snap-back! ;{)
Yea that's usually how it is with all my videos, they really fluctuate😂 I got a video with like 20K and like only 25+ likes. I just mainly prefer more likes then dislikes, that's what I mainly focus on
I wonder if that's because a lot of people will start watching the video and realize that it's got nothing to do with what they are interested in. It's an excellent video for those of us who either have one of these gadgets or are shopping for one, but a random UA-cam viewer has no idea what these are and doesn't care.
Yea I try not to make so in depth but a good amount of the things need to be said and sound test, etc. That's why for all my videos now I have a timeline so people can skip through a bit to the point that they mainly care about

16:15 actually there is a mounting bracket for that part on the inside of the battery cover for those times when you're not using it.

At 15:55 I thought the little rubber piece can be stored in the battery compartment on the back of the cover. :-)
It can actually. I found that out later on from another comment and tried it myself and IT WORKS 😂🤣
