I love the Simpsons movie, and Marge's "Goodbye" is a major reason why. When she talks about overlooking Homer's many selfish flaws and then gets to the part about why she stays with him...only to admit that not even she really knows why at this point, it just stomps on my heart. And the kicker is, in that moment she's not wrong. Nobody can make a reasoned argument for why Marge should stay with Homer; not even Homer himself. And his sudden realization of this is heartbreaking because we know he can do better than this and we root so strongly for him to sort his mess out and do the right thing.
In a way, the movie is where the Simpsons ended for me. That isn't to say I think modern Simpsons bad or anything. I haven't watched it in years so I have no idea. But it was right around where the movie came out that I felt the Simpsons had reached its personal highs and had given me the best I could ask for, and the movie felt like the perfect cap to all of that. Some day I may go back and catch up on a lot of the stuff I missed, but if I never do, I'll consider the movie my perfect goodbye to Springfield.

Julie Kavner's vocal performance in the VHS scene is truly spectacular. It's rare to see a voice actor be given that much time and respect to be able to do something that authentic. I don't have a problem with celebrity voice acting in movies, for the most part, but it's scenes like this that make me sad that professional va's aren't given more opportunities to stretch their legs as performers in large scale projects.

The wedding video is simultaneously a big ol' love letter to continuity and a big ol' hand wave to continuity. The wedding was Vegas style, done as quickly and cheaply as possible. The extent of the reception was the two of them eating cake on a bench, so no friends and family in the background. Visually, Marge was further along in her pregnancy at that point, and Homer's suit was a totally different shade of blue. I have never seen a scene that moved me so much yet makes so little sense, and I kinda love it for that.

There, with just a couple lines, the audience would’ve known everything they needed to about him.

I know for a fact that song meant a lot to Marge as well. Weirdly I heard "Close To You" for the first time from The Simpsons as well, but in a different episode. Not sure what the overarching plot was, but I remember Marge getting a fancy doorbell that played the first few notes of the chorus in a piano tune. She was obsessed with the bell at first, but iirc I think she got super tired of it towards the end, sadly.
I don't know what their release order was, but that was the first time for me. The song was so sweet, and Marge seemed to love it. I didn't realize why until later when I saw their high school episode (maybe as a rerun or something).

The emotion that The Simpsons used to have (or at least primarily had) makes it all the more painful when you look back at older episodes or specials or stuff and know what it becomes in the future. You can even here it in the voices, but not because of a lack of trying. They're just getting old, and they can't do the voices as well as they did 25 years ago

I think one of my favourite things about The Simpsons (and it's highlighted in this scene really nicely) is that it is incredibly easy to see the show as a story of a bumbling husband with a loyal wife-and this scene shows that it is how HOMER sees it too (in this scene anyways), but in actuality, the love that Marge and Homer have for each other is so palpable and transcends the antics of the show that you see this scene and it fits in nicely with not just the plot of the movie but with so many episodes of the main series that's it's like....OF COURSE Marge feels this way. The scene doesn't feel out of place for the series as a whole or one that has just been manufactured for the movie; it fits in with the grand scheme of the show, too.

I never watched The Simpsons but I watched this movie when I was younger and loved it. I probably watched the DVD 20 times in the first year I owned it. Definitely friendly to new viewers.

Oh heck, I haven’t seen that Tracey Ullman short at the start in probably 20 years! Memory unlocked dude. Seeing the dark blue bathroom and Marge climbing in was like “wait a minute, I know this…”
The show the shorts were from wasn’t a thing in the UK, but some major retrospective on UK TV around the turn of the millennium used them for interstitial moments between their interviews, clips, and their top-10 (or whatever it was) countdown. It was the first time I saw any of those shorts, and it was so interesting and different to me to have sketches with punchlines for these characters rather than drawn-out scenarios.
I remember not really knowing what they were, and when the first DVDs came out I remember wondering if they’d have them, but of course they didn’t! And naturally hardly anyone else over here knew what they were, though it’s probably better-known now with the internet and everything.
So I’ve been living with the vague memory of that bathtub scene in the back of my brain, and no way of scratching that itch! Thanks very much!
The rest of this analysis was great too, but I just wanted to focus on the intro haha

It’s interesting cause I haven’t seen this movie in years but this is actually the one scene I do remember. I remember being so shocked and sad when Marge mentioned taping her message over their wedding video and desperately wanting her and Homer to make amends. Great video! I’m liking these new segments like “Loosies” and “In Real Life”. Your videos have been so consistent and packed with such good quality. I wish they were getting the views they deserved but your grind is not going unnoticed Tariq. You’re doing an amazing job. Keep your head up!

I remember not really remembering the gravity of this scene the first time when I watched it as a kid. But after rewatching it so many times then, and being reminded of it now with your video, it really does go to show how great this scene is and how good the simpsons is.
Keep up the great work man

Although not the cinema where I did most of my under-20 moviegoing, The Simpsons Movie was the 2nd-to-last film I saw at the Dreamland Cinema in Margate before it closed down in November that year!
The VERY last film I saw there was Surf’s Up!
At the time, I was a college student, but even though I live in the South East of England, my learning disability meant the “only” college I could go to was all the way in Swindon, Wiltshire!
I REALLY wanted to drop out, and although I did make attempt to drop out a few times, for some reason, NONE of those attempts were successful!
September 2007 was ESPECIALLY bad, in addition to the typical post-summer break syndrome, I was further expressing my disdain for boarding (sadly, I didn’t think to give a proper explanation of WHY I didn’t like boarding or that I felt I was being given the “Why me?” treatment) and not only did I want to drop out, but having seen The Simpsons Movie less than 2 months ago, I would’ve, if I had the money, bought a full-size-VHS video camera and shot a goodbye message, inspired by the one in this movie, and even taped over my class’s act in the school production my first full year at the school I was going to at the time!
One student at the college I was going to in 2007 got at me for hating boarding, which he really liked! He even ORDERED me to EMBRACE boarding life, adding that if I did, he’d buy me The Simpsons Movie on DVD when released! I told him he can keep the DVD as I was planning to get The Simpsons Movie on Blu Ray!
As sad as it was that my attempts to drop out of that awful college didn’t work, I can happily say that for Christmas 2007, I got The Simpsons Movie on Blu Ray and Surf’s Up on UMD, both of which I still have today!

I love family guy, american dad and Simpsons but I’ve always loved Simpsons more because they're so good at making the viewers feel, especially the way Marge + Homer are in love
I think you should review the latest season ( 33 ), it kinda has a lot of maturity in terms of emotion + personality for example where Lisa has the octopus and fluidly expresses the way she feels or when Bart has a crush on the teacher and struggles to express the way he feels because he does it through misbehaviour and ignorance

I mean, shit- when I saw that scene I fully believed it was the end, and it hurted SO BAD! HomerxMarge is sacred to me. Nothing should keep them apart, bc even with all of their flaws (Marge's too, she is no saint), they still support one another. They still try to make it work.
Maybe it is because I have divorced parents, and Homer and Marge were my confort ship as a kid, and I wished my parents had tried just a little like those two do in each episodes, but nobody wants a psychological analysis here.
Which is why the new era Simpsons upsets me so much. Is like they are constantly putting Homer as a sociopathic bum, and Marge as this poor unfortunate soul that settled.
    And I don't like it

This is the video that finally got my dumb 90s baby ass to watch the show that I've only seen in passing since the very first airing of Who Shot Mr. Burns - evidently one of my earliest memories, because the second I heard the "it's like taking candy from a baby" line, I had a fuckin Marty McFly "hey, I've seen this one" moment, it gave me the Worst whiplash. Anyway I'm balls deep in the show and I've spent like $90 on merch and this movie is a masterpiece, don't look at me.

I've heard a few things online lately, and talked to a couple of friends about The Simpsons Movie where I've heard mixed opinions on it, but I feel like a lot of them haven't seen it in a long time. Although it might not be groundbreaking in anyway, it's far and away a fantastic adaptation of the series. It has the comedy and the heart. I still can't watch that scene of Marge telling Homer that this is goodbye without tearing up, even though I've seen the movie 50 times. It's so heart breaking and it feels real.
You hit the nail on the head with this video, even though I just tried to, I couldn't explain it better myself lmao
