Futurama had a little side of beef, a small slice of kobe, with Adventure Time but I think that was more of a "same voice actor dunks on self" shout out.
When it comes to stuff like this, sometimes it’s hard to tell if it’s more “close friends or family members ribbing on each other in a good natured way” or “high school friend groups shitting on each other in close little gossip circles”
I see it as the first option given how the staff behind these shows are so large and rotating that it’s impossible to get a “hive mind” consensus out of them. Collectively it IS overall just a job tho, a job they’re likely passionate for, but still a job nonetheless. A lot of the board artists, actors, writers, sound engineers etc work on multiple and sometimes the same shows so often and generally spend so much time around and with each other that it’s hard to believe they truly got a ‘Spy Vs Spy’ thing goin on As an artist/aspiring animator myself, we literally don’t got the time bruh The older you are and the more serious you take art as a career, the less time you have left to actually spend it on bar fights 😔
I think it’s adult animation creators who understand the process/pitfalls, and pointing it out. It’s not a mark against the show more or less playful ribbing of other shows. They also have a unique perspective when viewing other shows, and knowing that their audience also likes the other show.
He WAS going to charge Peter for "Not having an emmy" dispite the many Emmy's Family guy Has gotten, Such as:Outstanding Voice-Over Performance - 2000, Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program - 2008, Outstanding Comedy Series - 2009, Outstanding Voice-Over Performance - 2009, and Outstanding Voice-Over Performance X2 - 2013.
The crew probably are (or maybe were) big fans of both shows. The Simpsons had been around for over 20 years and Family Guy was around its 10th season when Bob's Burgers premiered. I think they were a younger set of talent, so most of them probably just grew up watching both. They're probably just happy to be referenced and laugh them off.
@@silvertriforce2574 The ‘Family Guy doesn’t have an Emmy” jokes doesn’t make sense and it’s the second time they’ve used that joke. Family guy has won multiple emmies I don’t understand why the writers are rewriting history.
I never understood the beef (or perceived beef) between these adult animated shows. They each have their own inherent value to their respective audiences, and I think that's enough.
I think most of them that don't involve family guy are just jokes, but every adult cartoon legit DESPISES Fanily guy, after South Park did it's Family guy episode they received flowers and a letter from the simpsons and other adult cartoons saying things like "Thank you" or "Finally someone said it" Imo it's pretty deserved tbh, Family Guy is the bottom of the barrel of comedy writing
@@jujutaylor2186 True there are no "truly original ideas" but this argument ignores execution which really is the deciding factor. When it comes to more topical subjects South Park is pretty consistently better at it, Family Guys issue it it needs to focus less on being topical and more on just its "dumb stupid jokes" those are what it does best and if it stuck to that lain more often I don't think people would hate it as much as they do. Like American dad is basically just that, and it's still amazing. Family Guy really should take some notes form it's little brother.
Bro I swear it feels like Bob's Burgers was personally responsible for killing one of the Family Guy writers' dog, and every time they're tasked with an episode their untapped rage unknowingly permeates into their jokes it's so wild to me lmao
My problem is that Family Guy (at least its writers) seems a little bitter about its competition. Let's not forget the "joke" (that was censored off the American broadcast) where Quagmire literally onscreen rapes Marge Simpson, and then proceeds to off screen kill the entire Simpsons family. There's throwing shade at a series, but that was just bitter, angry, and juvenile.
@@mightyfilm Yeah it just feels like a step over the line. Especially when we know that Seth Macfarlane and Matt Groening are very close friends. It's moments like that where it just doesn't feel like anything that coincides with Seth's own values and that's just painful to see y'know? I kinda hate that Family Guy now has a rep for being callous or mean spirited now when the creator is the furthest thing from that, and that's not how the series started out. All because some weirdo in the writing staff seems to just be like a hateful bitter piece of shit idk man.
@@NerdMiGerd Other times they threw shade at the Simpsons were at least clever. I love when Stewie rants about the babysitter's boyfriend watching his favorite downloaded Simpsons episode "Oh, you've memorized the whole Mr. Plow song. So hasn't everyone!!!" And then the episode about O.J. Simpson where Mayor West says "Get out of here Simpson! We don't love you as much as we did in 1994," only to pan over to Homer. Funniest bit of the episode, frankly. Just...that one time was just inexcusable. Luckily it was a one time thing. That said, I liked The Simpsons' jab at Bojack Horseman better. Marge refuses Homer to watch the next episode of a Stranger Things expy, and appears as Bojack on the TV saying Homer can watch that, only for Homer to say "NO! Too depressing!"
My understanding was that Mike Judge was a huge help for Matt and Trey when they were getting started and that's why the staff was portrayed as neutral as it was. I think the KotH crew just kinda stuck to themselves when they were on the air.
I always think back to what Seth said about Matt and Trey which was basically "Make fun me all you want but don't go after the writers you don't know and make way less money than you".
This is why I hate when people talk about “zombie simpsons”. Just because you don’t vibe with new Simpsons doesn’t mean the writers, animators and voice actors didn’t work hard on it, and imo people don’t realize or respect that enough. Same goes for Fmaily Guy.
All I know is that American Dad isn't being mentioned ONCE and every show that takes a shot at it is just "LOL, Family Guy 2.0" when that was NEVER ACCURATE.
Honestly I think they’re scared of the AD crew. They don’t want beef with Roger. Seriously tho AD has the sharpest writers of all these shows and would tear all of them a new one. It would be hilarious too.
American Dad’s season 1 was VERY close to being “Family Guy 2.0”. The first episode even has cutaway gags! It did grew into its own thing and it’s better than Family Guy and whatever they were trying to do with The Cleveland Show. More consistently good as well.
Yeah- it was only Family Guy 2.0 at the start (and those were by far the worst seasons) but American Dad has been more consistently good than any of these other shows since I'd argue it's actually a rare example of a show getting better over time instead of worse. Either way, American Dad is quietly fantastic and deserves way more credit than it gets. American Dad fans are surprisingly chill and good natured in my experience too. 100% Seth McFarlane's best work in my book.
13:47 Matt and Seth weren't always buddy-buddy, there was a scene in one Family Guy episode where Quagmire uh "had relations" with Marge and ended with him killing the whole Simpsons Family. Matt was apparently not happy with that gag and led to some tension between him and Seth from so years until they actually made up.
as a massive South Park fan, and someone who is mostly indifferent towards Family Guy, (not a fan of it post cancellation, but i do like the first 3 seasons) it doesn't make sense that so many people are still so intensely running with either side of the argument. it basically boils down to "the cartoon i like is better than the one you like, you suck!" also i always felt that South Park making Cartman the mouthpiece of the anti Family Guy argument was Matt and Trey's way of acknowledging how petty and childish they were being
Honestly, I think it's a jealousy situation since Bob's Burgers, a show that didn't seem like it was going to last, ended up winning an Emmy before Family Guy and outrated it multiple times
I'm sure it's all in god fun. If not, I don't think that H. Jon Benjamin would still be working with them. It's very similar to like how Peter and Chris go at it over Robot Chicken after all of the Star Wars episodes, but McFarland literally voices Palpatine on Robot Chicken. (Just in case anyone isn't aware, Seth Green created Robot Chicken and voices Chris)
That "rivalry" is giving me Timmy's Dad/Dinkleberg vibes. Bob's Burgers is the most inoffensive adult cartoon show ever made, and yet Family Guy just hated them.
i really like the way you talk about adult cartoons on god. so many discussions of the simpsons/family guy/etc. feel so samey and annoying and it's just refreshing to hear a relaxed perspective like this for once
When it comes to the element that sets members of the cartoon/animation discussion community apart from one another, what I can clearly see from ToonrificTariq is his heart. He has the most respectful, thoughtful takes on whatever he's talking about. Like, he's talking straight from the heart and finds something good in most works he critiques.
I never really believed the beef between adult cartoons were really real, I just sorta assumed it was a way to have all of the adult cartoons promoting each other while on the same network biding for attention. I can definitely get how there would be frustrations with topics being covered that you want to have covered or the constant contest for attention to be renewed but outside of that it's sort of like WWE wrestlers hyping it up for the viewer
I feel like it was a mix of both real beef and fake. I think the bobs burgers one is fake while Simpsons was a "we repaired are relationship" and South Park and Family Guy is a genuine we don't like each other
@@Dham_Pyra No. the South Park and Family Guy beef is 100% one-sided with the aggression coming solely from the South Park camp. Has Family Guy even once mentioned South Park during its 25 years on air? They’ve mentions the Simpson’s, King of the hill, Bob’s Burgers, hell even recent shows like Big Mouth and Bojack Horseman have been mentioned. Never South Park. The beef is 100% one-sided and pathetic.
Family Guy's snark towards Bobs Burgers stems from the fact that Bob's Burgers continues to thrive on the wholesome family aspect that Family Guy had before its revival.
Over the recent years , ive come to love shows like Futurama and Bob Burgers due to the fact that they do stay in their own lane ( im not counting the simpsons nods bc the same creator made both shows ) and they have heart . Not saying that South Park and Family Guy never did or currently have , but its more apparent in the former shows i mentioned than in the ladder . Amazing video as always , Tariq !!
This was like THERAPY for me. Even when the episode came out, I was like, "But the SHOW...IS SAYING...that FAMILY GUY IS FUNNY! WHAT IS THE PROBLEM!?" as people dogpiled Family Guy online.
This whole argument feels like a "burgers and pizza" argument. Both are good in their own ways, but there are both diehard fans that will hate the other for little to nothing
And let's not forget the beef that the producers of Drawn together had with South Park and South Park didn't even bother to tackle it... which is something South Park is not affraid of doing
When South Park was talking shit about Family Guy it kinda came off as a bit pretentious, but when Family Guy made jabs at Bob’s Burgers, it felt more like petty jealousy.
@@GumSkyloard well yeah because like the only character in the episode against family guy was cartman who is probably the most childish and petty character on the show. The likable characters like or are indifferent to family guy
@@IzDubeThe problem with South Park is when they use Cartman as a mouthpiece after years of using him as an anti role model. The commentary (as Tariq showed) has Matt and Trey on Cartman's side.
i understand the point matt and trey are making about the writing being ‘lazy’ but that doesn’t mean they don’t work hard either way. i think they’re so used to working 16 hr days for several weeks that they forget that it isn’t normal for shows to make an episode in 6 days. yeah, it can be done but it shouldn’t be the norm. i hope their animators are paid well for getting an episode done so quickly. shit’s probably exhausting.
I like all the shows in this video for different reasons. South Park is great at commenting on social issues with witty stories. Family Guy has some hilariously absurd situational comedy. Bob's Burgers is heartwarming and focuses on the interpersonal relationships between the family members. Bojack is a fantastic look at the aftermath of Hollywood fame that is both very well written with jokes that absolutely break me with laughter and sad moments that will bring a tear to my eye, often in the same episode. Sure each show could try to be just like South Park, but the other shows aren't South Park and would end up just being worse South Park instead of their own thing that people like for different reasons.
Tariq would be a better black cartoon reviewer UA-camr if he didn't swear and if he used a PNG avatar and if he gave preachy, soapbox speeches and if he used a purple background with yellow text and if he greeted his audience with the same phrase at the beginning of every video and if he said goodbye in a similar manner and if he was sexy... ...but until he gets all that and lives up to his potential, I guess I just prefer other non-specific superior black cartoon reviewer UA-camrs.
I found myself going through phases where I favor one show more than the other. I love Bob's and I'm appreciative of what it's done to the other shows around it. That's what happens though a new style of art comes out is popular and then other shows emulate that in their own way.
Dude… I’m new to being familiar with your channel because of your Talking Simpsons episode and I’ve been working through your episodes ever since. Thank you so much for what your doing. Your voice, tone, humor, sincerity and attitude to the way you approach animation is so refreshing and awesome to hear. Thank you so much! Keep at it.
I'm surprised you didn't bring up The Simpson's "beef" with Ren & Stimpy! They both were a craze at the same time and poked fun at each other (accidental "Simpson's did it first").
It was all because John K. hated that "The Simpsons" was a writer driven show, unlike his which was animator driven. In response, They fired back with how K. was an infamous uberperfectionist who was constantly late with new episodes.
Okay but why does no one ever talk about how great american dad actually is the writers know how to make things hilarious and engaging i juat dont see enough appreciation for american dad in the adult animation world super underrated
Something I noticed is that they only hate on the other Fox Adult Animated Series, but they don't seem to joke about other adult animated series outside of South Park. Aside from that one Bojack Horseman joke (I haven't really seen many Family Guy episodes), I don't remember seeing any F is for Family jokes.
@@AnAverageGoblin No it's not but more importantly Big Mouth is more internationally known: more awards, more views on Netflix and UA-cam, more iconic. That's why Family Guy and the Simpsons are making references to them.
@@DDarkestKnight I don’t know what you’re talking about bro I watch family guy and Simpsons on a daily basis. I’ve seen every family guy and Simpsons episode and not once have I seen them reference that god-awful show big mouth and that Bojack Horseman are 2 shows that I don’t understand why they are so popular. I tried to sit down and watch the shows I couldn’t last more than 10 minutes and yes F is for family is leagues in bounds better than any other animated show I seen on Netflix. There’s like literally no argument when it comes to South Park of family, Guy South Park hasn’t been funny since they released the movie back in 99 anytime I try to watch a new episode it’s fucking insufferable trying to get through.
@@DDarkestKnight being more internationally well known doesn't mean its good lmao. Ant Man movies are well known and they all suck shit. if popularity meant good there would be no such thing as a bad hollywood movie or bad tv show. the fact you think Big Mouth is good proves that paid reviews and recognizable voices gave you your opinion before it could form on its own.
"These sound like normal words to ME like fuck..." I think the original gag is lazy as heck but this defense of it made me die of laughter Tariq 😂 Got me hiccuping, holy crap hahaaa
same lol. I think ppl got mad at that gag bc it was implying the characters in bojack being animals was just smth tacked on to try and differentiate it from other animated sitcoms (implying it's "just another adult cartoon" but w/ animals). but it rlly wasn't a malicious joke so
I had a gf who was quite literally obsessed with family guy like it was all she watched except for impractical jokers it was funny at first but brain numbing the longer it went on
I grew up watching both shows as a kid. I’ve always preferred South Park over the two. Family guy I thought the older episodes were fantastic. One thing Seth macfarlane and trey and Matt have in common is their both very musically talented as seen in both shows. Also stating the obvious both shows have always got a lot of backlash and controversy since they started. Other then that they’re style of comedy is very different. I’ve always respected their fight for freedom of speech both creators are very passionate about that which I always respected. The PTV episode of family which is one of the best episodes ever is basically the equivalent and South Park bigger longer uncut cause they’re both a giant middle finger to censor and make both series what they are. Family guy has definitely gone down hill over the years and that’s because Seth macfarlane hasn’t written the show in ages. He just does the voices. The characters just became very mean spirited and unlikable. That show still has a place in my heart with the older episodes and one of my favorite shows. South Park is still funny and enjoyable after 26 seasons. Some episodes are better then others. In fact after the movie the show got better and better. I still miss chef (Isaac Hayes) and the original voice for Wendy, Kyle’s mom, cartmans mom, other female characters (Mary Kay berg) rip. When I started watching South Park I mostly watched the early pre movie seasons and the movie, even though I was born in 98 and South Park was on for years. Those episodes are very special to me. But as I said South Park got better after the movie. The movie definitely made me fall in love with South Park and is still to this day my all time favorite show.
I never understand why people compare things that you really shouldn't. Things are different and they have their own charms and falls and sometimes things have only falls, but they shouldn't be instantly compared to other cartoons with family members who always get into shenanigans. Or a content creator who talks about the same type of shit. Love then all for different reasons and that will make things easier
I don’t know how this episode was in the original dub, but it was great watching it in German because they actually got the German Family Guy voice actors for this episode to make it more authentic
Anytime Family Guy makes fun of Bob’s Burgers basically feels like the equivalent of some bitter dude in his mid Thirties mocking a child simply out of jealousy that they’ve achieved more and got more recognition than they’ve gotten in the past .
Whenever I think about Family Guy's writing style, I think about how the creators of Venture Bros said they were jealous of how much time Family Guy let their jokes sit. It takes a certain kind of creative to do something like the Conway Twitty gag, because it takes away so much time from a 22-24 minute show, and I think Doc Hammer and Jackson Public both saw that as their own personal weakness (since they're so focused on quick paced, super story heavy work), and something worthy of envy to a degree.
This video was really well thought out. I’ll admit, l’m 100% guilty of ragging on Family Guy in recent years. The characters becoming really mean spirited is a big reason for that. But like you said, it’s just two different styles of getting a laugh out of someone. Despite there being overlap, South Park and Family Guy are courting different audiences, and there’s nothing wrong with that. We can have opinions without being dicks to each other.
Loved this. Especially feel valod on how bobs burgers literally is just existing and yet family guy and others hate on it for a while. Like "we are literally, just doing our jobs"
Id argue that Bob's Burgers set a standard. It doesn't have to depend on shit like racism, homophobia, etc to be funny. Its just a mostly wholesome show w its own personal edge and the Belchers mind their business. Outside of Futurama, Bob's Burgers is truly one of my all time favorite.
Family guy doesn’t go out of their way to make serious decisions (most of the time..) and that appeals to certain people in the same way more serious shows appeal to different people. What’s important is to just respect the way others consume media
I really love what you said in this video and I fully agree, I love all of them so much because there so nostalgic to me, I grew up with Bobs burgers, King of the hill Family guy, South Park and the simpsons I say like what you want and if you don’t agree with someone shut your mouth and just watch your shit, because no one’s gonna give a dam if you do or not there all funny in there own way and touch people in different ways.
Here's why South Park's episode on Family Guy doesn't work. They made Cartman be the "voice of reason" and Kyle the one who's "wrong" despite spending a decade telling us that Cartman is an asshole who isn't to be trusted or listened to.
South Park is a snarky Twitlonger, Family Guy is a Tiktok of someone getting whifflebatted in the groin. Both are funny for wildly different reasons, but as long as you laugh, that's all that fukkin matters
I think they're angry at each other because they're losing customers to each other. When it comes down to it Family Guy, The Simpsons, South Park, and Bob Burgers are all just businesses competing for the most customers and they hate competition and now that Rick and Morty exist it's even worse for the other shows.
That moment when you realize Family Guy beefs with Bob's Burgers... And the shows share a voice actor. (Before people ask: H. Jon Benjamin voices Bob Belcher. He also voices Carl, the gas station guy in Family Guy. Obscure character.)
The thing people forget about South Park’s roast is that they were roasting Family Guy during the show’s fourth season, one of if not the best season of FG.
10:44 always found it so strange this was written in the midst of the simpsons' 13th season yet butters says there are only 132 eps? by that time the simpsons was almost at 300 eps, they passed 132 back in season 7
I think part of the animosity toward Family Guy that it hit its height right out of the gate in its first revival. I remember entering freshman year of HS in 05 and everyone was quoting Family Guy or had a t shirt or something with the logo on It.
I stopped liking Fmaily Guy after 2010-2011. I noticed a huge shift in tone for the show that I didn't like. I felt this way for years. I watched Lydia's video a few months ago about Brian and how he changed. She mentioned Seth hadn't written for the show since 2010. I never knew that for 13 years. Pure coincidence
I don’t keep up with family guy and I am shocked they go after Bobs burgers like that. At least South Park had a real criticism of family guy they wanted to express. “Bobs burgers looks bad” is just slander and lies, it makes the writers appear so jealous of Bob and his smoothly animated burgers.
5:45 Family guy's gag style writing extends within the main episode plots (not just the cutaways) and they can often derailed and undercut the story. Like the transgender Peter episode has a moment of plot based character driven moment when Quagmire's Dad (as the show usually refers to them) tells Peter that "faking being trans is wrong" in a sincere moment - for the scene to end with Meg coming into the bar post committing murder. There's an episode specific ongoing gag of Meg being a serial killer, and having her show up at a specifically LGBT bar of all places, uncomfortably places the two topics next to other; leaving room for misinterpretation that the writer is saying the two groups have a connection (connections that are bigoted to make). Also: In Family Guy A plots and B plots rarely come together and the "inciting incident hijinks" are more of a micro episode, establishing the main conflict and rarely coming back to play for a "full circle" moment. Curb Your Enthusiasm is a good example of a show that does both those things well in most episodes.
@@nickrustyson8124 re-occuring bits can be funny, but has proven to muddle the message/intent. as far as cross episode canon for family guy, you can't put too much stock in "everything is canon" cause in that case the show falls apart. Quagmire's dad should never be a representative for sincere views of LGBT issues if you see Family Guy having a constant cohesive continuity, given there's a one off shock gag where her bangs her. See other characters as vehicles to tell jokes however, you can overlook viel things and just go with the moment (as long as the moment doesn't immediately get undercut or contradicted). Family Guy works great as "funny moments" better than really any other adult animated comedy - but as something you gets truely personally invested in; the show betrays itself and characters so much it's nearly impossible. It's diffrent than SouthPark's "nothing is sacrade" approach mind you, given the later never shys away from character's horrific actions and it went in with the approach - character's never got "ruined" cause they always were off the perc from day one. Cartman vs Scott Ternermin is perfect example, it was in the show's nature, it was on brand for the characters and it never brushed the moment under the rug and is like "that definitely happened." End of day, two widely diffrent styles - but my core point is the styles are even more diffrent than OG vid claims lol.
9:57 Honestly, the joke that _really_ stuck with me from that reboot pitch episode was the self-burn: "Yeah... I don't really *get* _Family Guy."_ "What's not to get? You just need to have been _born_ in the '80s, but still be a _teenager."_
Matt and Treys criticisms I feel are valid, I don’t think they care it’s popular it just isn’t clever and feels like a censor overload passed off as entertainment. I only really started watching southpark during covid and thought this way about family guy beforehand.
I wonder if the constant jabs at Bob's Burgers is just Family Guy's way of including it as "one of the guys" so-to-speak. Of course it comes off pretty mean-spirited since Bob's would never fight back on it, but I do think the "Emmy winners' discount" joke gives off the more playful vibe much better.
Idk, I like both shows a lot, but I do think South Park is more well put together overall. I do generally agree with Matt and Trey's points, they definitely know what they're talking about in that regard, but I feel it moreso applies to the later seasons of the show where it became way more gag-focused. They're right in that having a show just be a laugh machine and nothing more, while very fun, just isn't sustainable for a long-running series, and I think they've more than proven that point in how their other show managed to keep itself just as fresh and entertaining as it was 20 years in because they put more focus into the character writing.
"but I feel it moreso applies to the later seasons of the show where it became way more gag-focused. ", and right here we can tell you have NOT been watching current seasons where the gags have been reduced substantially. Also, "They're right in that having a show just be a laugh machine and nothing more, while very fun, just isn't sustainable for a long-running series", What show are you talking about because, While not always hitting well, Family guy HAS made Deeper episodes, Just a shame you're too Shallow and Pretentious to understand them. Just because those episode contain jokes doesn't erase Deeper messages within them. "and I think they've more than proven that point in how their other show managed to keep itself just as fresh and entertaining as it was 20 years in because they put more focus into the character writing." What other show? As far as I'm aware, they only made southpark, and as the Simpsons has shown, Once you've been around long enough and gotten big enough It's really hard for big companies to throw-away a brand recognized show that rakes in money hand over fist so them being around 20 years means Jack-All. Your points are faulty and you've said nothing of substance.
@@silvertriforce2574 Okay really don't appreciate the sass here, and first off holy shit have you approached everything I've said in completely bad faith. First off just because a show is still on doesn't mean it's operating in its peak form, like... at all. Like the Simpsons have been running for over 30 years, but its respect and general reputation is a far, far cry from what it was in the 90's. Like if you want proof just think of how many people give a fuck about any other season of the show outside of 1-10. It's not just me or anyone saying it ain't good anymore, just look at the reputation on a broader scope. It went from a cornerstone of our culture to something that only comes up in passing mention. Also yes I have seen the good episodes from the later seasons of Family Guy, yes they are decent episodes, but they are often outliers from what the show is generally like at that point. Flanderization exists primarily in status quo shows for a reason. When you refuse to evolve your characters or setting in any meaningful way as a sitcom writer you often have to keep topping yourself on putting your characters in increasingly outlandish situations and lean harder into their pre-established comedic quirks. It's something that very much happened with Family Guy around seasons 6-10 (not speaking for recent seasons, haven't seen much of em so I just can't speak on what their quality's like), where because it's reliant on gag humor and often forgoes character writing for the sake of getting a bigger laugh it had to keep making its stories and characters more and more outlandish to keep itself surprising, but when you aren't grounding your story and just keep ramping up the antics of your characters things stop being shocking. Comedy is only as effective or transgressive when it's grounded in some base of character conflict or narrative, otherwise it's just noise. It's what Matt and Trey are expressing when venting about their frustrations working with "gag writers". And as Tariq said, both styles can be enjoyed, and have an equal right to exist. However, Matt and Trey *do* have a point in what they're saying. I know that as a screenwriter myself, regardless of how you feel about South Park they know what they're talking about, and I think if you'd stop whining about them being "pretentious" and actually listened to what they have to say about comedic story structure you'd really get something great out of it. Their "but/therefore" method is truly instrumental for novice writers of any medium, and what first got me to start improving my craft as a writer.
@@silvertriforce2574 Also not just me stroking the ego of Matt and Trey, Seth himself also has some enriching things to say about writing a comedy. I'll always remember his response to South Park showing Muhammed, and I think points out a flaw in their "anything and everything should be mocked" mindset. I really liked his more mature and nuanced take on the subject, effectively saying that you have to weigh if a joke is genuinely funny enough to be worth causing potential harm to yourself and others, and I think you see that a lot in how he ran the earlier seasons of Family Guy before drifting away from the series to work on other projects.
@@silvertriforce2574 Found the butthurt family guy fan that wants everything to be a competition. sorry your parents never said they were proud of you lmao.
I just want to say I agree with you. I also like both. I think both shows have had their ups and downs, and while I prefer South Park it really comes down to what I enjoyed watching more when I was growing up. I was watching both of these shows when I was way to young to be watching either of them, so most of it boils down to what little me thought was more funny back in the day, and South Park won the battle with my sense of humor. Though that being said, looking back on it over the years as an adult I think South Park had the most consistency with its quality. Family guy dipped in quality hard after 7-8 seasons, and it hasn't even started picking back up until the most recent 2-3 seasons. Like I fully admit, allot of seasons 10-16 I have barely watched, Family guy just didn't hold me. Meanwhile, South Park really didn't start to stuble till around season 18-19. And while admittedly when South Park fell it fell far and hard, but I honestly think its bounced back of it really quickly. Like theres no doubt season 20 was the year South Park "died." the whole Garrison/Trump story just kinda fell flat. And like personally I think season 21 is even worse. I almost stopped watching the show that season. Its like they tried to go back to basics after the serialized stories failed, but like Matt and Trey just didn't have their heart in it and every episode was so bland. But like immediately after that in season 22-23 there are quite a few episodes I like, and like I honestly think the Covid specials are some of my favorite south park content ever created. They are great! But regardless, I'm very happy that here in 2023 I can finally say that I really enjoyed both the new Season of South Park AND The new Season of Family Guy. Both shows did a good job this year!
The only reason I’m not too harsh on Matt and trey with the garrison/trump storyline is because they had to rewrite it last minute which affected the rest of the season. But I agree season 19-23 are probably the weakest seasons I only liked about 4 episodes in those 5 seasons and had to force myself to pay attention to the rest. I think the fact they tried serialized storylines and focused more on the adults is why those seasons were the weakest but I’m glad after the Covid special they seem get better in quality
I don't listen to what Seth says outside his shows much, but when I was listening to some South Park commentaries it struck me how little it seemed Matt and Trey *actually watched* other adult animated cartoons. Which is kind of fair, those guys keep themselves busy making stuff, but it's both a strength and weakness of theirs that they'll be really opinionated based off little information. It's a strength because it allows them to find an angle that can form the basis of an episode quick enough to allow the 6 days to air production cycle. But it's a weakness because it kind of puts a hard cap on how serious anyone should take them
I stopped watching Family Guy and never watched an episode since because I hate Seth for getting King of the Hill canceled to replace with another one of Seth's shows.
I’m glad to see someone finally defend family guy tbh, there’s valid criticism to be made on family guys part but it’s not what Matt and trey make it out to be. I probably prefer South Park but family guy is a genuinely hilarious show and nothing can change my mind
Tbqf, the folks who do hate family guy are still family guy fans but then we're kinda embarrassed we don't have any other counterarguments towards the "best parts are just the gags over story" bit. since, quite literally, Peter and his friends changes personalities every episode or so. ANNNNND we mostly watch family guy for quick clips on the internet, hence the comeback.
I thought Parker and Stone were such hypocrites and snobs for having a problem with Family Guy’s cutaway gags because they saw as lazy or something yet for the first few seasons of South Park they kill Kenny in every episode, like how easy or lazy is that, how is that not a gag
Kinda not the same. They didnt make fun of gags in general. Just cutaways that skipped away from the plot. Plus they stopped killing off Kenny a long time ago.
They did my boy Tariq wrong with that HelloFresh code 😭. Everyone else's code is their channel name or something similar, then they gave Tariq a damn code that they give niggas to first connect their internet 💀

When it comes to stuff like this, sometimes it’s hard to tell if it’s more “close friends or family members ribbing on each other in a good natured way” or “high school friend groups shitting on each other in close little gossip circles”
"You're both right." - Homer Simpson
For Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers, it’s the former. For Family Guy and South Park, it’s the latter.
I see it as the first option given how the staff behind these shows are so large and rotating that it’s impossible to get a
“hive mind” consensus out of them.
Collectively it IS overall just a job tho, a job they’re likely passionate for, but still a job nonetheless.
A lot of the board artists, actors, writers, sound engineers etc work on multiple and sometimes the same shows so often and generally spend so much time around and with each other that it’s hard to believe they truly got a ‘Spy Vs Spy’ thing goin on
As an artist/aspiring animator myself, we literally don’t got the time bruh
The older you are and the more serious you take art as a career, the less time you have left to actually spend it on bar fights 😔
I think it’s adult animation creators who understand the process/pitfalls, and pointing it out. It’s not a mark against the show more or less playful ribbing of other shows. They also have a unique perspective when viewing other shows, and knowing that their audience also likes the other show.
It's pair of high schoolers making fun of a newspaper comic
I assume bobs burgers is the only one that doesn't hate the other shows since both peter and homer were in his restaurant in a cutaway

I never understood the beef (or perceived beef) between these adult animated shows. They each have their own inherent value to their respective audiences, and I think that's enough.
Exactly it’s really petty
I think it's just a form of promotion. It gets people talking more about your site when there's a rivalry--real or manufactured
I think most of them that don't involve family guy are just jokes, but every adult cartoon legit DESPISES Fanily guy, after South Park did it's Family guy episode they received flowers and a letter from the simpsons and other adult cartoons saying things like "Thank you" or "Finally someone said it"
Imo it's pretty deserved tbh, Family Guy is the bottom of the barrel of comedy writing
Exactly. There's nothing new under the sun so do it your way. If it hits, it hits. If it don't. Next episode
Bob’s Burgers and Futurama rock
@@mightyfilm What the actual fuck
My understanding was that Mike Judge was a huge help for Matt and Trey when they were getting started and that's why the staff was portrayed as neutral as it was. I think the KotH crew just kinda stuck to themselves when they were on the air.
Mike Judge was the voice of Kenny in the South Park movie because they liked him.

It's fair to know since Beavis and Butthead was one of South Park's biggest inspirations as well
I always think back to what Seth said about Matt and Trey which was basically "Make fun me all you want but don't go after the writers you don't know and make way less money than you".
That is a true fact, Seth doesn't write Family Guy, he's only the voice actor
@@estebangutierrez160 Yep and it’s don’t write anymore

This is why I hate when people talk about “zombie simpsons”. Just because you don’t vibe with new Simpsons doesn’t mean the writers, animators and voice actors didn’t work hard on it, and imo people don’t realize or respect that enough. Same goes for Fmaily Guy.
All I know is that American Dad isn't being mentioned ONCE and every show that takes a shot at it is just "LOL, Family Guy 2.0" when that was NEVER ACCURATE.
Shit even calling The Cleveland Show a Family Guy 2.0 isn't accurate
Honestly I think they’re scared of the AD crew. They don’t want beef with Roger. Seriously tho AD has the sharpest writers of all these shows and would tear all of them a new one. It would be hilarious too.
It was at first
American Dad’s season 1 was VERY close to being “Family Guy 2.0”.
Matt was apparently not happy with that gag and led to some tension between him and Seth from so years until they actually made up.
yeah but that gag came out after the cartoon wars relased

Family guy critiquing anyone else's art style is insane 😭😭😭
as a massive South Park fan, and someone who is mostly indifferent towards Family Guy, (not a fan of it post cancellation, but i do like the first 3 seasons) it doesn't make sense that so many people are still so intensely running with either side of the argument. it basically boils down to "the cartoon i like is better than the one you like, you suck!"
also i always felt that South Park making Cartman the mouthpiece of the anti Family Guy argument was Matt and Trey's way of acknowledging how petty and childish they were being

Yep
South park: loved child
The simpsons:forgotten child
Family guy: hated child
Bobs burgers: the youngest child
Anytime Family Guy makes fun of Bob’s Burgers basically feels like the equivalent of some bitter dude in his mid Thirties mocking a child simply out of jealousy that they’ve achieved more and got more recognition than they’ve gotten in the past .
Yep
Loved this.

Okay
It’s true
This is a really great point, I wish I thought of this lowkey lol.
South Park is a snarky Twitlonger, Family Guy is a Tiktok of someone getting whifflebatted in the groin. Both are funny for wildly different reasons, but as long as you laugh, that's all that fukkin matters
One of the most fair comments I’ve gotten on this video lol.

I could honestly imagine it being written that way just to annoy the people who know. Though just some very rough maths told me it was too low.
I think part of the animosity toward Family Guy that it hit its height right out of the gate in its first revival. I remember entering freshman year of HS in 05 and everyone was quoting Family Guy or had a t shirt or something with the logo on It.

I watched Lydia's video a few months ago about Brian and how he changed. She mentioned Seth hadn't written for the show since 2010. I never knew that for 13 years. Pure coincidence
Family guy, bobs burgers, South Park I love all three
I don’t keep up with family guy and I am shocked they go after Bobs burgers like that.
Yeah
Honestly I like those lore cutaways, always hit harder once you realize, "Wait that wasn't a one off joke"
Cartman vs Scott Ternermin is perfect example, it was in the show's nature, it was on brand for the characters and it never brushed the moment under the rug and is like "that definitely happened."
End of day, two widely diffrent styles - but my core point is the styles are even more diffrent than OG vid claims lol.
Love your analysis and commentary Tariq! Keep up the great work ❤
Bob’s Burgers is wholesome content, the polar opposite of Family Guy.
9:57 Honestly, the joke that _really_ stuck with me from that reboot pitch episode was the self-burn:
"Yeah... I don't really *get* _Family Guy."_
"What's not to get? You just need to have been _born_ in the '80s, but still be a _teenager."_
I know it's not that serious but I be ready to fight when they knock on Bob's Burgers
no bc same it's the most intense hyperfixation I've had in a while and I will defend it till my last breath. it's too good to be disrespected.
Tariq the way you edit your videos, and the JOKES are so good. I've just been binging since I ran out of cartoons that curse futurama episodes
Suffice to say, I'll be eating good on Tariq content for a WHILE lol
Matt and Treys criticisms I feel are valid, I don’t think they care it’s popular it just isn’t clever and feels like a censor overload passed off as entertainment. I only really started watching southpark during covid and thought this way about family guy beforehand.
I wonder if the constant jabs at Bob's Burgers is just Family Guy's way of including it as "one of the guys" so-to-speak. Of course it comes off pretty mean-spirited since Bob's would never fight back on it, but I do think the "Emmy winners' discount" joke gives off the more playful vibe much better.
"Here's what I hate about Family Guy **literally recites the entirety of that South Park episode front to back**"
Yep scanalous
South Park doesn’t do random gags though lol
Didn't know Family guy disrespected BB so much, damn that's sad.
@@NerdMiGerd Yup
Yeah !
Very Matt and Trey to be like "the Simpsons should step aside and give more opportunities to us, 2 very successful edgy white guys"
You know shit's good when there's 2 drops a few days apart.
Always have mad respect Tariq for sticking up for Family Guy
Even though I’m not a Family Guy fan, you do make some good points.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Ok
Amazing video like always my dude !! I always get so excited to see new uploads ^-^
What happens in The remaining 14 minutes? Nothing interesting lol
