    It's great to see a company like Ineos keeping the dream alive, but in all honesty, Grenadier pricing is what convinced me to put the money into refreshing my 80 series. Lockers, gears, re-spray, etc. and the old beast is like new again.

      Yup that is its achilles heel. Cool vehicle. Sure it has its issues but most probably can be solved with aftermarket mods once they become available. But it is just way too expensive compared to its competition. I have a fully mod’d Gladiator for less than that and that includes the canopy and RTT and you’d have to drop another 15K at least into that Grenadier to make it as capable as my Gladiator. And any rural mech in the US can fix my Gladiator, I’d be worried about repair ability of the Grenadier here in the US.

      I do find it very odd that a brand new truck in that price bracket needs weird tips to do something basic like lock/unlocking diffs. The Gren comes off a bit halfbaked off-road (really, no skid plates for most anything and so-so ground clearance?) despite billing itself as a hardcore offroader.

    Surprising to see you guys aren’t comparing new with new: a JLUR vs Granadier. An 80 series that hasn’t been in production in 30 years isn’t a great comparison, but a new JLUR is. JLUR is the standard for off road engineering currently. Every other rig has wimpy IFS.

    The BMW B58 engine used in the Ineos Grenadier is the same version that is used in the 2020 Toyota Supra. The Ineos application is detuned from 335hp to 282hp, which means it is less stressed also. After 2020, Toyota went with another version of the B58 that makes 382hp in markets that don't conform to the EU emissions requirements.

    • @damilolaakanni
      @damilolaakanni 6 місяців тому +3

      What was said by most people was that BMW (because they designed and built that engine) underrated the power numbers, and they're fond of doing that a lot. They said it made more than 335hp from the beginning. I don't know how true that is though.

    • @The_Opinion_of_Matt
      @The_Opinion_of_Matt 6 місяців тому +3

      @@damilolaakanni It is something manufacturers have done for a long time. Supposedly the 302 c.i.(5.0L) V8 in the 69 Z28 Camero made more HP than the 396c.i. V8 in the Camero SS. The Z28's engine was a homologation race engine for the 5.0L and under Can-Am Racing class.
      When I looked it up I found two different sources for the BMW B58 numbers. The wikipedia page on the B58 lists two different engine codes, one for 2020 and one for 2021+ and stipulates for non-EU engine emissions countries. So I assume the EU Supra still has the 335HP engine.
      Another example is the ND Miata. There is a Alfa Romeo model that uses the same chassis as the ND Miata. Biggest difference is the Alfa model uses a smaller displacement turbo engine, whereas the Miata uses a NA 2.0L engine. The first year or two the ND Miata made 150hp and the Alfa made 170 something HP. After the first two years Mazda increased the redline on the NA 2.0L and it has made 180hp ever since (you can still get lower hp versions in Japan because if taxes based on engine size and power). It has been speculated that the contract between Mazda and Alfa stipulated that the Mazda version had to make "x" horsepower less than the Alfa version for 2 years so that the Alfa would have time to get a return on their investment in the project.

    When I saw first Grenadier, I thought it was awesome that a company is creating such a vehicle because I like the older Land Rover Defenders not the luxury Land Rovers we have now. I love the layout of the front and center console, but IMHO they should have had a traditional gauge cluster or driver infotainment screen along with at minimum a 12in center screen angled to the driver. Also, they should have did air lockers instead of electric, or have the option to do air lockers.
    To be honest, I would 100% buy one if I can option it to have a more common Dana 60/60 1ton axles.

Kind of a head scratcher why they didn't go to more of a mechanical set up for that too. Great video, great comparison. I was determined to hate the grenadier after they didn’t build a basic utility vehicle as originally intended and shafted us on the price but after being invited to see the prototype a few years ago I had to admit that I was thoroughly impressed.
    The steering damper is in a ridiculous location, the radiators and coolers are vulnerable and the rear sand scoop will get caught up in all kinds of scenarios but it’s got the basis for one of the best utility vehicles ever made if they would build a dumbed down version for the developing world and NGO’s.
    If I was Ineos, I would immediately put sway bar disconnects in. Without them, the rubicon will eat it for breakfast in most circumstances. The wheel wells are also surprisingly small, a lift is a horrible way to fit larger tyres. Aftermarket portals are probably the only way to avoid major cutting and they’re already available.

    I think Ineos really nailed it here. The design just great. The round headlights with the modern LEDs are just so good. Solid axles, lockers, body on frame, a powerful 6 cylinder. It won't appeal to the masses, but it will appeal to many. Especially in the off-road community.

The Grenadier will be my first truck that will not be a Toyota. People seem to have the missed conception that without lockers or any traction aids the vehicle its just useless. when I first went into off roading my trucks were driven open diffs with no traction aids relying on tire placement, choosing the right line and momentum. And yes, traction aids will take you further and go over obstacles with ease but nothing can replace driving skills (if you have both, more power to you) and this is something you can not buy.

      The BMW B58 engine used in the Grenadier is the same version used in the 2020 Toyota Supra. The Ineos version is detuned from 335hp to 282hp though. This means the engine is likely running less turbo boost making is less stressed. I would expect Ineos used a slightly smaller turbo to get more low end power. This would also mean a redline that is lower than the Supra to keep the turbo from spinning so fast the compressor and exhaust vanes break the sound barrier resulting in a shock wave being sent through the intake and exhaust potentially destroying parts along the way.
      In 2021 the Supra went to a different version of the B58 that makes 382 horsepower.

In order to stand close with the 80 series, it must pass the trial of time, it must prove itself over the years. And something tells me, the BMW engine is not quite up that level of reliability. And we know nothing of the axles yet, how will they take punishment and wear especially when carrying oversized tires. PS: steering damper being the lowest point of the front axle is an awkward engineering on the grenadier. PPS: Grenadier's tie rod looks a bit thicker, yes, but the 80 series has got 2 tie rods sharing the job.

      If Toyota sold the Australian LC 70-Series in the U.S. I would have bought one years ago. V8 Turbo Diesel, manual transmission, f/r solid axles with lockers, 2200 pound payload, 7700 pound towing capacity and the size of a Jeep Gladiator.

    The secret behind serious overlanding is RANGE. The 2024 Land Cruiser has 670 miles of range and is a hybrid with solid mpg. Unless you want to carry cans of gas or stop every few hours. Toyota is 20 years ahead, the old LC shows how they always get it right

    It feels that comparing Grenadier with 2024 Land Cruiser (Prado) would be more realistic and relevant.
    Different price group, but similar size and capabilities.
    Grenadier is out of many people’s price range, while new TLC is a more realistic option.

    I drove the Grenadier, great car, really feels like something special. I’m not sure about the powertrain though, it felt good for sure but i’m not sure about the reliability of a BMW powertrain for offroading. I guess if you’re overlanding or bit of rock crawling it’ll be fine, but i’m a dune basher, so there’s an unknown element there. Anyways time will tell. if you have the money definitely consider it.

      I understand your concerns. Earlier tonight I looked up the B58 BMW engine used in the Grenadier.

    The most common generation of the Land Cruiser where I live is the 200 series, strangely. I say "strangely" because of the last three previous generations, that's the most expensive and least fuel efficient one. You almost won't even find a 100 series for sale anywhere here. You may find a few 70 series here and there, but most of them are used by the military.

    This thing is cool, and pretty much a rich guy toy, so the price seems reasonable taking that into consideration. I'm disappointed by the lack of skid plating though, and the steering looks like it hangs a little low. I also wish they had sourced GM V8 engines rather than the BMW, but that's just me. Really curious to see one of these lifted with a 33 on it, I think the small tires are also a negative.

    I've owned a couple 80 series landcruisers - both had front/rear diff lockers. One was lifted like yours with 35" tires. It was a beast for sure, very capable. It's cool to see how beefy the Ineos is built underneath, it seems to be built to similar standards as the 80 series, however I would worry about long term reliability with the engine/transmission knowing they're BMW sourced. I have a feeling that LC may still outlast it lol

      You are completely right. BMW components are the last thing I would want on Australian roads, not to mention off-road. I had a test drive of this car. To be honest, in comparison with the Toyota LC 70 series, the Grenadier looks, feels, and actually is quite shitty. Logically, for people who have spent $100k on this vehicle, my words might be hard to swallow. However, I had my eye on this vehicle myself, and after testing, examining it closely, and careful consideration, I returned to the Toyota LC 70 series.

      I haven't finished the video yet, but I can tell you I've seen the 80 on their trenches course and they recently had a Honda Pilot Trailsport that did much better than the open diff 80 in that course. Case's Disco 2 with traction control on small street tires also outperformed the 80 on 35's. Open diff vehicles are relatively helpless, solid axle or not.

    The Land Cruiser has been legendary since 1951. It has proven durability, proven reliability and proven build quality. The Ineos is wholly unproven with BMW engine and electronics.
    Whilst the B58 engine is good for a BMW engine and is used in the Supra (because it's a Z4), it still has common BMW issues. Namely, Coolant Consumption/Loss, Valve Cover Gasket issues, PCV Valve Failure, Oil Filter “Disintegrating” issues and VANOS Solenoids failure. How do I know this? We own a M340i. Whilst a very fun car to drive, the oil pump already needed to be replaced after 2 years.

    Old new school works quit well. Underbody protection should be standard, considering the price, and what it is build for. One downside is that BMW engine. Its way to expensive to repair, and was never specificly made for real tough offroading. Just adapted. As proven in the old LR Defender.

      The B58 has been proven quite reliable actually. If there is anything BMW knows how to make well in this day it is straight six petrol and diesel engines. Their more complicated V8:s and V10:s have been problematic but their new engines are actually very good. Gearbox is solid too (ZF).
