That was an awesome video and to know what type of gear to use and what will fail you in a real life and death emergency can make all the difference that's awesome.
Seems like you would MUCH better off with the zippo lighter over the zippo fire starter!!! HA!! Do you have a "best" source for the spark lights? Thanks for the time and effort.
Carry a zippo and a bic. Take a box of wood matches, wrap the wood stem in a 1" wide strip of paper towel (leaving the head exposed) and dip into a tin of old melted candles. Cram as many wrapped matches as you can back into the match box. When needed you can light the match/waxed paper towel with either lighter or if your lighters are non functional you can scrape the wax off the match head with your fingernail and strike it on the box. These wrapped matches will burn for several minutes.
the zippo fire starter is completley waterproof i have one and it works fine after being submerged for even minutes and to me its way better than the spark lite
I have both, Realistically how wet do you think the zippo tinders will get in the case? If I was going to expect to get wet I'd put some electrical tape around the seam also. Having the spark light you get in a bag with 20 or so tinders also, just in another part of gear along with other various methods. The zippo is nice in your pocket, I wouldn't disregard its usefulness and you can make a nice handle for the spark wheel once the plastic hinge on the case breaks. Or maybe incorporate it in another piece of gear.
realistically you never know what may happen in a survival situation. I do not see the point of carrying something that is not a sure fire. I can do what the zippo tinders do with natural material. When I'm wet, cold, and need a fire I don't want to mess around. The zippo requires it to be dry. Mother nature gives no promises.
I bought the zippo a couple of years ago. It worked ok dry, but I picked up better tabs to go in it at my local outdoor shop. Since I gave $6 each for the Zippos, it worked out pretty cheap.
Zippo makes a brass case version for $20 which is waterproof, and can fit an extra flint, and they are meant to be striked in the case. Although the provided fire starters may not be the best, I feel like the tool itself is better...
Thanks for the vid. I think the zippo doesn't advertise it as having water proof tinder. It has a waterproof casing. So in reality the casing should have been submerged. Also looks to me if you want double assurance get the zippo with spark lite tinder.
Glad the beard is back bro, hehe I would miss mine if it went lol. Anyways, Back on point, I have one of those Zippo ones and was surprised it had no seal on it. I got it to throw in the fire kit as another addition, just hope I don't need it when it's raining. I will try and get one of the Strike Force kits, at the end of the day for anything that is not natural tinder you can't beat Tinderquiks. Thanks for the video, great comparison and a huge disappointment on Zippos behalf! All the best, Chris
So when you are cold, wet, and need a fire...you have a fair chance of being out of luck with the Zippo. Talk about defeating the purpose! What were they thinking? Not trying to be dramatic here, but reviews like this could potentially save lives. Just sayin'.
You say the zippo ripped off the sparklite. I say it innovated the concept. Orange would be better, as I'm not going to loose it among debree on the forest floor. Brown was the worst possible color to choose.
Idk what zippo was thinking when they made these?!? A zippo pipe lighter is ideal and my go to fire source when outdoors. Just stick it under your soon to be fire and enjoy.
+BlackScoutSurvival So does that mean if you have a beard when an emergency requiring a gas mask happens, that unless you can find a way to shave, you're screwed?
I appreciate the capacity of the Spark Lite but when you are sucking in the field and your hands are either numb or in pain (or just in gloves, I think the design of the Zippo firestarter could be more helpful. You dont have to fidget inside the case or pull out the striker. Just fluff the tinder a little and strike that bitch. You could always make/ find tinder in extreme cases or carry extra tinder in a fire kit separately. While I understand these are emergency fire starters personally I feel like the best thing to do is to bring an actual Swedish Firesteel and an altoids tin of homemade tinder as long as you are expecting you might have to use it. A fire steel is extremely waterproof and you can make or even buy fantastic tinders.
+Greyman Zink Well apart from the original zippo lighter, I feel like the rest of the zippo line to be full of fancy looking products with questionable reliability and high price..

Good comparison. I have the spark lite and it works every. Thanks. atb

There are links in the description.

Do you have a video proving this. I'm have one that proves your statement wrong.
+BlackScoutSurvival You are just a hater, on the video zippo was smoking much longer then spark lite.
Zippo has always been better than the spark light
Spark light def the clear winner thanks for sharing
Nice test video bro, I got the spark lite and got to say it's an AWSOME piece of kit with the tinder quicks it works flawless every time

Great comparison. I wish I could have heard ya better.
Cotton wool balls with a dollop of Vaseline (petroleum jelly) and a ferro rod every time. It is simpler, cheaper and more efficient.
cannot be used one handed.

how much are the millitary kit in the US? its 30$++ where i live.
How about trying the wet test using the Spark Lite first and dry your hands on that instead of the Zippo?
The problem with the zippo waxed cotton is that its cut on the side leaving it open to water. They should really wax the whole thing.

I agree. I was surprised that would happen. I figured it would give some trouble. But did not think it would be impossible to light. Thanks

Where do i get that aciation survival kit from?
will either of those fit in a DPX hest?
This is cool love my zippo emergency firestarter. And btw FIRST!
Yeah I always was skeptical of the quality of these
Dunks tampon in water
"This is hard to light"
+Randy Magnum no tampon in video. Get mom to refill your Ritalin prescription so you can pay attention bettet
Idk what zippo was thinking when they made these?!?

good video, what kind of watch is that?
Thanks. Suunto core
BlackScoutSurvival thank you
I'm very irritated by the fact your beard has gone.... :D
Haha. Don't worry it's already back. I had to get fitted for a gas mask. Beard doesn't allow it to seal.
I know that feel... :D
+BlackScoutSurvival So does that mean if you have a beard when an emergency requiring a gas mask happens, that unless you can find a way to shave, you're screwed?
+Privacy Lover no. You coat your beard in Vaseline to seal with gas mask. I keep it with my gas mask
yeah buddy
D: the brass one is $22...
Or just spend a buck or two on a clipper lighter and take the sparker out of it.
Just take ur zippo and pull out the wool inside of the zippo+ light it
The Zippo wins every time, especially if used properly.
audio is very unbalanced

A serious fail for Zippo. Thanks.
